Developer JavaScript Insights PretextAfter building out my first ever vanilla JS Rails API application I thought back on the experience and skimmed through my code to gather ideas on what I could blog about The truth is there were many bits and pieces that I learned but I didn t feel like I knew nearly enough about each topic to solely dedicate an entire blog post Not to mention I also suffer from chronic indecisiveness So I apologize in advance but I decided to just list them all Here are things I learned attempted or simply found interesting about JavaScript One To function or not to function that is the question In JavaScript and particularly vanilla JS you re most likely going to declare and use these so called node getters where you grab elements from the DOM using a method such as but not limited to querySelector in combination with one or more valid CSS selector strings like classes or ids And when you find yourself querying for the same node multiple times at difference places in your code it makes sense to assign it to a variable and extract it to a more global scope right Now I know that when we first start learning to code this notion of declaring variables in the global scope is a big no no and it gets reiterated over and over as we re often told that it can lead to some unexpected behaviors down the road and should therefore when possible be avoided But for now let s just assume that our application is extremely small and there is very little to no reason to sound the alarm The question then is whether to wrap these node getters into a function or to just have it point directly to the node For instance you might ve seen someone do something likeconst mainContainer gt document querySelector div main versus something likeconst header document querySelector header So which way is better The answer I ve found is that it really depends There s this subtle yet sweet balance between what you are trying to accomplish with the node and whether the node exists or doesn t exist inside a particular execution context The benefit of using a function to grab your node is that you can always ensure you are selecting the most recent version of it since you are calling the query at the exact moment you need it This is particularly useful when perhaps you need to grab a node that doesn t exist immediately on initial load but is something that gets created later in your code as a result of a callback for instance I d say times out of this is probably going to be your preferred method However the opposite can also be true I ran into an occasion where it made more sense to point directly to the node and it was something as simple as wanting to remove a header from the page and later re attach that same exact node back on the DOM In this case if we were to use a function we would not be able to find the node since it would no longer exist on the document and we would instead have to re create the element But luckily for us JavaScript has garbage collection meaning it will store it in memory and give us access to it even after it s been removed from the DOM as long as we point it to a variable It then goes without saying that this would probably merit some thought in all future applications in order to ensure that we are always effectively preventing unnecessary memory leaks Two Two is always better than one or is it The thing I m talking about here is none other than the DRY principle of programming and my humble attempt to combine two functions into one I ve learned by now that refactoring code is just a regular part of any programmer s life and should become second nature sooner rather than later So as I examined for areas to abstract I noticed that my fetch functions were carrying a lot of code and particularly noticed similarities between my POST and PATCH requests The data being sent was identical the fetch url was identical except for the presence of an id thanks to RESTful routing and the init object was identical except for the HTTP method It seemed to check everything off the list for a potential refactor First I should start by mentioning that I ve built my application in an object oriented pattern using ES class syntax and therefore have a separate Adapter class that handles all fetches Sticking to conventions of CRUD I ve got a static createRecord and updateRecord method within the Adapter class each responsible for sending the appropriate fetch request I also have one other static property baseURL and two other static methods defined setDataObj and setInitObj baseURL as the name suggests simply stores the base URL to which we will be sending our fetch requests while setDataObj is responsible for constructing the object that we will be sending off to the backend and contains all of the input values from a form It looks something like this static setDataObj gt const name form querySelector name value const description form querySelector description value const data name description return data Notice that it returns the data object as this will be useful to us in the next step Then in my setInitObj method I take in a string argument for the type of request POST PATCH or PUT then use it to build out an options object static setInitObj method gt const options method method headers Content Type application json Accept application json body JSON stringify Adapter setDataObj return options Notice that I am now able to simply pass in Adapter setDataObj to JSON stringify since we made it return the object we need setInitObj then returns yet another object which we can use in our fetch method both in createRecord or updateRecord passing in the proper HTTP verb with it static createRecord gt fetch Adapter baseURL Adapter setInitObj POST static updateRecord id gt fetch Adapter baseURL id Adapter setInitObj PATCH Now in my event handlers or anywhere in my code where I need to send off the form data I can simply call Adapter createRecord or Adapter updateRecord id Three Being conscious of how often we fetch Personally this was more of a food for thought than anything else because I m guilty of not following my own advice but I did realize the importance of code design particularly how I wish to maintain the data on the front end after a fetch Because this was my first experience with JavaScript and especially because I was using functional vanilla JS instead of object oriented JS or some other library I chose the easy way out and saved myself a few headaches by re fetching at times Not ALL the time but in certain situations At least now I definitely see how I could have done things and it will come in handy as I think about incorporating more features on my app like sorting and filtering Note This was something I wanted to share at the time of originally writing this post but have since rebuilt my entire project into object oriented JavaScript and am now dealing with my front end data in a much different manner Four Default behavior of an HTML button is submit Last but not least I was enlightened during one of my debugging sessions that apparently the default behavior of a button is submit unless specified otherwise Maybe this was just me but for some reason I always thought lt button gt tags did not have a default behavior as opposed to lt input type submit gt This would matter less if the button isn t enclosed in a lt form gt but if you re ever trying to use buttons inside a form for something other than submitting the form you have to either specify the button s type attribute as type button or alternatively use preventDefault in its event handler Again this might ve been obvious to most but I hope someone else out there might find it useful to know If you ve made it this far thank you for population Companies using AWS services have the opportunity to do so but with a number of limitations to consider when planning to move your services to China Things to consider when using AWS services in China Signing up for AWS China RegionsThere are currently two AWS regions in China Beijing and Ningxia Global AWS accounts are not suitable for accessing services in China and vice versa You have to create a separate account to access AWS services in China But first we have to prove our identity to be able to use AWS services in China For this we have to provide our business license issued by the Bureau of Industry and Commerce of People s Republic of China PRC or a valid government agency To do this Amazon offers us the AWS China Gateway Portal which will guide us through the process of creating an account in this region ICP Filing for Internet Information Services in Mainland ChinaIn accordance with Chinese regulations We have to fill in the Internet Content Provider ICP permit and there are two types The “ICP Recordal is the process for hosting a website providing non commercial internet information services and “ICP License is to host a website providing commercial internet information services Network Connections for AWS China RegionsThe AWS China and AWS global regions are not directly connected To overcome packet loss and latency between the Chinese and global AWS regions AWS works with local internet service providers such as China Mobile The DirectConnect service is used to establish this solution by signing a contract with the provider as well as following Chinese regulations regarding the transfer and localization of information Relevant Compliance and Regulatory Requirements in Mainland ChinaIt is important that if we plan to move our services to China we have to be aware of the legislation AWS can facilitate this process by contacting their helpdesk Apart from the ICP and depending on the type of business the following regulations must be taken into account Security obligations under China Cybersecurity Law Multi level Protection Scheme MLPS Certification Cryptographic related regulations Our particular use caseIn our particular use case we had to deploy a fairly simple web page where users would have to fill in a series of forms to enter a competition Their personal data would be stored in a database for further processing As a fundamental requirement the application had to be highly scalable as we expected to receive high traffic peaks at certain times after running promotional campaigns on social media These projects usually have very short development times between month and weeks so the developments tend to be quite hectic and results oriented rather than maintainable All the projects we do for this client have very similar requirements so we always use a very similar architecture and technology stack to optimize the development process Front end app using React and NextJS framework API REST using NodeJS and Express It connects our front end app and our database PostgreSQL as a database to store user data We deployed these projects on a Kubernetes cluster using the AWS EKS service We use the same template to create the necessary resources in the cluster so the deployment and configuration of a new project is quite straightforward However in the case of this application we encounter a big problem by Chinese regulations no personal data of a Chinese citizen can leave China Neither our Kubernetes cluster nor any of our resources are located in China but in the Frankfurt region Therefore due to Chinese regulatory restrictions it was not going to be possible to reuse the infrastructure we already had in place for this project Fortunately AWS has a couple of special regions within China Ningxia and Beijing These regions which make up AWS China are segregated from the rest of the regions AWS Global have a much more limited number of services than the other regions and their interconnectivity with the rest of the AWS regions is practically non existent We decided to simplify our infrastructure as much as possible Instead of using EKS we decided to use Elastic Beanstalk an AWS service that we had not used so far but that seemed to fit perfectly with our use case Elastic Beanstalk allows you to deploy scalable web applications in a very simple way taking care of creating all the necessary AWS resources for its proper implementation ec auto scaling group load balancer etc Therefore it made deployment and configuration very easy for us Once we managed to get it up and running setting up infrastructure continuous integration etc we ran into another problem related to the Chinese regulations As discussed in the previous section any website needs to have an ICP license This license among other things links our website to an IP Our client right from the start of the project provided us with an Elastic IP fixed IP for which he had already requested and obtained this license At this point we realized one basic thing how are we going to build a highly scalable application only accessible with a single Elastic IP If we want the application to be highly scalable we will have to be able to scale the application horizontally i e increase the number of servers that host the application However the Elastic IP can only be associated to a single EC machine which does not work for us No problem let s just use a very large server The big problem with this is that it is not elastic at all the capacity does not increase decrease depending on the processing load at any given time which leads to higher unnecessary costs Well Beanstalk can provide us with a load balancer ELB allowing us to have several servers hosting the application but only one entry point Why not associate the IP with the ELB It turns out however that assigning an Elastic IP to an ELB is not possible Internally an ELB uses a pool of IPs that allows it to elastically scale its processing capacity so assigning a single IP to it is not possible Therefore we had to improvise an alternative solution which would not be optimal but could help us to solve the problem Rapid Solution Configuring an EC instance as a reverse proxyIf you are in a hurry to move your services in China as a temporary solution you can set up an EC instance as a reverse proxy The first thing to do is to create an EC instance from the AWS China console which you have to create beforehand Here is a link that shows you how to do it Remember to configure the security groups to be able to access the instance via SSH and to be able to access port and from anywhere We have installed certbot to get the SSL certificates for free with Let s Encrypt Once you have created the EC instance in our case we selected Amazon Linux and you can access it via SSH you have to install the Nginx web server and certbot Let s do it First we need to update the OS Amazon Linux and install the Nginx web server sudo yum updatesudo amazon linux extras install y nginxsudo yum install certbot python certbot nginxCertbot is able to automatically configure SSL for Nginx but needs to find the server name directive that matches the domain you are requesting the certificate for This directive is found inside the server block Let s modify the nginx conf file sudo vi etc nginx nginx confserver name example com www example com We save our changes and verify that we have respected the nginx syntax sudo nginx tIf no error has occurred we must restart our server for the changes to take effect sudo systemctl reload nginxNow we are able to automatically configure our server to use HTTPs Now we have to run the following command to make Certbot update our configuration file sudo certbot nginx d example com d www example comThen Certbot will communicate with the Let s Encrypt server and check that you control the domain for which you are requesting the certificate If everything is successful Certbot will give you two options for configuring the https settings Easy Allow both HTTP and HTTPS access to these sitesSecure Make all requests redirect to secure HTTPS accessOnce you have chosen one of these options Certbot will modify the Nginx configuration and restart it It will also give you a message saying that the process was successful and where the certificates are stored Now you just need to make sure that the certificates are renewed automatically as let s encrypt certificates expire after months To do this we are going to configure a cron job with the Certbot command that allows us to renew the certificates sudo crontab eOur editor will open the default cron task tab and we will write the following task usr bin certbot renew quietThis task will be executed at am everyday The renew command for Cerbot will check if installed certificates are set to expire in less than one month and update them And the quiet option tells Certbot not to wait for user acceptance on certificate renewal Let s create the configuration file for our Nginx to act as a reverse proxy Now we are going to create a file in the following path etc nginx default d proxy conf The proxy pass directive indicates where the traffic has to be redirected in our case it will be the url of our load balancer Once this is done we will load our main configuration file The file will look like this location proxy pass http your load balancer url proxy pass header Server proxy hide header X Powered By Then we restart our server and check that the syntax is correct as we have done in the previous steps and we would have our Nginx server ready with https traffic enabled and acting as a reverse proxy The stable solutionOnce the problem was solved in time and the day of the launch of the application arrived we had the feeling that there should be a better way to solve this problem We thought the situation was too common It should have happened to someone before After searching and searching in Google we found a document from SINNET the company that manages the Beijing region in AWS China link This document redirected to another document with information on how to manage ICP licenses when using ELBs link Summarizing the content of the document it seems that when applying for an ICP license it is possible to request several IPs not just one On the other hand there is the possibility to request AWS China to only assign IPs to an ELB from a fixed set of IPs the ones requested in the ICP license However starting to use this approach at this stage is no longer possible A new ICP request can take between and weeks to be accepted so the current system will have to remain in place for at least a month We decided to write this article mainly to save the lives of those who in the future will encounter this problem and will be able to solve it in time But we would also like to make some conclusions from this Rushing is never good leading to improvising in case of any problem The client should tell you what he wants to do not how especially if he lacks technical knowledge of the domain I m not saying that they cannot contribute to it but not to impose it without a occasional dollhouse adventure HBO MaxHacksA once legendary comedian Jean Smart is forced to team up with a young semi cancelled writer Hannah Einbinder to whip her act into shape Hilarity ensues Hacks takes this simple sitcom premise and elevates it with Smart s ferocious performance On the face of it it s a story about two creative generations learning to coexist But really it s the story of lost people finding direction in each other It s the sort of genius comedy and drama we d expect from the folks behind Broad City StarstruckA lost twenty something Rose Matafeo accidentally has a one night stand with a movie star Nikesh Patel Again hilarity ensues HBO Max really has a knack for collecting great show premises Starstruck nbsp is the rare season of TV that you can easily binge all at onceーit s just six twenty two minute episodes But I d recommend taking your time Matafeo is uproariously funny but there s also a romantic undercurrent that makes you root for these crazy kids Also on HBO The White Lotus Rich resort goers vs the people who are forced to cater to them It s great to see another funny yet deeply human show from Mike White Search Party This former TBS show now an HBO Max original is the best hipster murder mystery you ll ever see Succession There are plenty of shows about rich blowhards these days but Succession stands out as a sharply written dark comedy filled with characters you love to hate HuluReservation DogsStories about the everyday lives of Native Americans are far too rare so it s refreshing to see a dramedy like Reservation Dogs Set in a rural Oklahoma reservation it follows a group of teenagers as they get into trouble help their community and pursue their dream of moving to the promised land of California It s the first TV series to feature an entirely Indigenous crew of writers and directors it was co created by the ever delightful Taiki Waititi and it s a reminder of how the push for better on screen representation can lead to fresh storytelling Also on Hulu Top of the Lake If you re looking for a smart crime thriller don t sleep on this Jane Campion series It stars Elisabeth Moss as an Australian detective who across two seasons investigates cases focusing on missing and murdered women Y The Last Man The rare adaptation that manages to improve on its source material Y is a compelling portrait of a world where almost every person with a Y chromosome dies leaving women in charge Apple TV For All MankindOne of the first Apple TV series has evolved from being a mildly intriguing alternative history tale ーwhat if the Soviet Union landed on the Moon first ーto one of the best dramas ever made about space travel My advice Get past the rocky first two episodes to find the show s true genius NASA s push to get more women and eventually people of color into space If it miraculously lasts several seasons I wouldn t be surprised if For All Mankind nbsp shows us how something like Star Trek s space faring society could be formed Also on Apple TV Dr Brain Apple s first Korean series from visionary director Kim Jee woon explores the possibility of downloading and reliving someone else s memories Strap in it s a lot Disney HawkeyeEven if you re tired of the Marvel Cinematic Universe Hawkeye is worth a watch simply because it s fun Clint Barton has never been the most interesting Avenger but he s fantastic as the foil to Kate Bishop a plucky arrow slinging protege It may not reach the heights of Loki or Wandavision but it s miles ahead of the supremely disappointing Falcon v Winter Soldier Also on Disney The Beatles Get Back An astounding fly on the wall documentary featuring some previously unseen Beatles footage Star Wars Visions The anime spin on Star Wars I ve always dreamed of Bluey Hands down the best kids show on TV Other things to watchYellowjackets nbsp Showtime An elite girls soccer team gets stranded in the woods after a plane crash How did they manage to stay alive for over a year Yellowjackets follows the surviving adults as they try to figure out who s digging into their traumatic past Star Trek Prodigy nbsp Paramount What happens when a group of alien kids get their hands on 海外TECH	Engadget	AWS had another outage, this time affecting apps like Slack and Hulu	https://www.engadget.com/amazon-web-services-outgage-slack-hulu-asana-grindr-150029082.html?src=rss	AWS had another outage this time affecting apps like Slack and HuluIf you find that some apps websites and games are having trouble loading this morning or seem more sluggish than usual there might be an explanation Amazon Web Services on which many apps and websites run experienced more difficulties today impacting a number of services for at least the third time in the last few weeks AWS said on its service health dashboard that there was a power outage at a data center in the US EAST region It first reported issues at AM ET By AM ET power had been restored to quot all instances and network devices within the affected data center quot and AWS noted services that use the data center for hosting and were impacted by the outage were starting to recover Around minutes later it said the majority of AWS services had recovered but noted it was still trying to remedy issues with some Elastic Block Store volumes a type of AWS storage due to quot degraded IO performance quot Among the affected services were Epic Games Store ーwhich said internet service outages were impacting logins library purchases and more ーand Slack which noted it was having trouble with uploading files editing messages and other features Imgur Asana family location sharing app Life Udemy and Honeywell and Fall Guys are among the services that reported issues while the likes of Hulu Rocket League Grindr and the McDonalds app also suffered difficulties according to user submitted reports on Down Detector At the time of writing some of those issues are ongoing An AWS outage on December th impacted the likes of the Associated Press Disney and Vice AWS later said an issue with an automated capacity scaling feature was the cause A brief outage on December th affected Twitch Slack and online gaming services	2021-12-22 15:00:29
