previous article we looked at the fundamentals of session management We also looked at two types of access tokens and how both of them are inadequate when it comes to providing strong security along with a good user experience In this article we will look at an open source library Supertokens and the improvements it brings to strengthen the authorization process Before that let s define what an ideal system would look like An Ideal Session Management SystemAs discussed in the previous article we are going to base our recommendation on the basis of scalability security and user experience User experienceAs a user I do not want to log in every time I visit a page In fact I do not want to log in for long periods of time Imagine logging in to Netflix after every episode That is not a good experience For this to be possible the user should hold access tokens for a long time generally days or weeks Access tokens need long expiry ScalabilityThe server should be able to scale as needed without being hindered by the authorization process The guideline we get from our analysis of reference tokens is that as much as possible avoid interaction with server side storage This means value tokens are great for scalability SecuritySecurity is the most important so while we try to provide good user experience and scalability we cannot compromise on security Keeping in mind the target of providing long expiry and using value tokens like JWT let s look at the security considerations of such a setup Security problems with long lived JWTsWe keep the JWT on the client side This means that we have no control over its safety and theft This is also true for reference tokens Therefore we need to be prepared for situations of token theft If the token has a long expiry time the attacker can use it to access the resource for a long time Long expiry Long attackIt is hard for the application to detect if the request is coming from the attacker or the victim Algorithms like IP location tracking can be used but they are not efficient and can lead to a lot of false positives and false negatives leading to less security and deteriorated user experience respectively It is hard for the application to invalidate JWTs if by any chance detection is made possible The JWT contains its own validation information the application will always find it valid One possible way is to store forcibly invalidated JWTs in storage until they naturally expire and check each coming request for validity A performance mess Rise of refresh tokensThis led to the concept of refresh tokens Refresh tokens are used to extend users sessions when their access token has expired or is about to expire In the Supertokens implementation refresh tokens are long lived reference tokens which refer to a record stored on the server side This allows the application to track the number of active sessions and devices per user At the same time it is easy to invalidate the refresh token if the user logs out or we need to make the user s session expire for some reason Refresh tokens allow us to use short lived access tokens Thus the problems associated with access token theft and subsequent long attacks are mitigated However refresh tokens are themselves not immune to theft But unlike access tokens we have them stored in the backend We can tie them down to a single session and invalidate them whenever needed Let s see how Supertokens implements this Tightening the Security with Rotating Refresh TokensSince refresh tokens can be stolen what if we rotate refresh tokens upon every refresh request This means that whenever a refresh token is used a new refresh token takes its place on the client side Authentication and AuthorizationThe user authenticates with the server The server returns an access token expires in minutes and a refresh token lets say expires in days The client can keep using the access token for minutes in its requests Session RefreshIf the access token has expired the client makes a request to the server for another access token with the existing refresh token The server returns a new access token and a new refresh token The client can keep using the new access token for minutes in its request And so on How does this help during token theft We saw two problems with a single access token we cannot detect theft and we cannot invalidate the token Let s see how Supertokens achieves this using rotating refresh tokens Detection of theft and InvalidationThe refresh token RT is stolen and the access token AT is stolen along with it The attacker uses the access token for a while and then makes a request to the server for a new access token The server returns a new access token AT and a new refresh token RT which when used will invalidate the older token RT In the meanwhile or after this the victim also makes a request to the server for a new access token using the old refresh token RT This is when the server can detect that the refresh token is stolen The server will invalidate all refresh tokens corresponding to that session This means that both the victim and the attacker will have to re authenticate Forcing a refreshIn the above flow the attacker can still use the access token for a while before refreshing To solve this let s force the attacker to refresh the access token as soon as it is stolen To do this we can use the old IP tracking method While creating the token we can store the IP address of the user s device in it Whenever we receive a request from the user we can check if the IP address of the request is the same as the IP address in the token If the IP is different as in the case of the attacker we can ask the client to refresh the access token This will force the attacker to refresh the access token as soon as it is stolen and further minimize the time window for the attacker to use the stolen access token Wait a minute Didn t we say IP tracking is inefficient Yes But we can still use it Let s talk about the inefficiencies that were stopping us before False positives were leading to less security If the application cannot detect the change in IP address or somehow the attacker is able to send the same IP as the victim it is still a problem but this is less likely and even if it is missed we have already made the problem smaller by reducing the expiry time of the access token by times for mathematicians False negatives were making the user log in again If the application detects a change in IP of the user s machine itself e g my IP changes when I switch to a VPN it will ask the client to refresh the access token This is not a problem for the user anymore because this can happen automatically now How does this improve the process Let s compare how the Supertokens implementation compares to the ideal process we defined above UX improvesSession time remains the same If earlier we had a day valid access token we will change it to a min valid access token and a day valid refresh token This means that the user still does not need to log in for days Now it is also possible to assist the user to review their log in activity when they log in from a new device The library does not directly provide this functionality but contains APIs to help you do so It also makes it possible to implement on demand session revoke Imagine if the user suspected a password theft they can be provided functionality to log out of all active sessions and change their passwords This again needs to be custom implemented by you Note In both the custom implementations all that is required is for your frontend to call the APIs that the library already exposes for you Scalability almost remains the sameAlthough refresh tokens are stored on the server side they are at max checked once per minutes per user session This is a negligible deterioration in application throughput An average session has hundreds of request per session duration lt mins This means that the deterioration is less than when we introduce refresh tokens Security improvesNow let s analyze if the security problems of the access token is resolved Shorter expiry means the attacker cannot use the JWT for a long time Detection We can now detect theft using rotating refresh tokens as described above Invalidation In a single JWT system invalidation was not possible per user or per session However now each user session has its own refresh token We can revoke a single session on demand without affecting any other sessions ConclusionIn this article we look at how Supertokens implements session management We and community adopted Kubernetes Package manager used in industry It is used to install and manage all the Kubernetes application In laymen language think of it as npm or pip for Kubernetes Helm deploys all the ks applications in a packaging format called helm charts It is used to install upgrade delete even the most complex Kubernetes applications Now let s try to understand why do we even need helm charts at the first place Need of Helm ChartsKubernetes provides a command line utility called kubectl which is efficient enough to deploy inspect update delete your Kubernetes resources All the ks resources are defined in YAML files and can be deployed update etc by using kubectl But then why the hell we need helm charts Let s try to understand this with an example For instance you have a Kubernetes application which have different resources say deployment service service account role role binding configmap secret and ingress Now we need to deploy all these resources in our cluster Either we can use kubectl apply f Yamls command to deploy all resources present in Yamls directory or we can use helm charts If we are using yamls then for any new resource we need to create a new yaml file and then deploy it In this case eventually we will have to write multiple yaml files each for different resource But this is not the case with helm charts Helm charts packages all the different resources of your ks application in an organized way It contains a directory called templates where all the different resources are defined which needs to be deployed The environment variables and deployment specific parameters are extracted out and put in a separate file called Values yaml which can be configured every time you deploy the chart The advantage of doing so is that you can deploy it to different clusters and even in different environments say development staging or production environment without creating the whole chart again So this one of the major advantage of using helm If you still have doubts don t worry We will create a chart from scratch and deploy it on a ks cluster Getting StartedInstalling and creating helm charts are quite straight forward You can always refer to their installation docs for installation as they provide a rich documentation to install helm in different distributions For this example we will be using script to install helm Please execute the below commands First we need to download the script in our machinecurl fsSL o get helm sh Now we need to give execute permission to the shell scriptchmod get helm shFinally need to execute it which will install helm in your system get helm shGreat We are done with installing helm in our system To verify the installation please run helm version shortIf you could see the version the installation is successful Create Your First Helm ChartAs we have successfully installed helm in our system its time to create our own helm chart and deployed a Kubernetes application We will be creating a chart for a simple go application which can be cloned from here Note In this blog I will not be demonstrating how to wrap the application in an image using Dockerfile Rather I will use an image which I created before and can be accessed from here Now let s begin with the hands on part and create our first helm chart Please follow the steps below Step Helm is efficient enough to provide you with the basic template to begin with To create the template execute helm create demo go appIt will create a helm chart named demo go app which contains the basic configuration files amp directories in the helm syntactical order as you can see in the below image Let s understand the files amp directories created by defaultKeyDescriptionChart yamlThe file contains the information of your chartchartIts an empty directory which may contain any dependent charts if you havetemplatesThe directory contains all the yaml files needs to be deployedtestsIt contains files used for testingvalues yamlThis file contains the values which needs to be given while installationStep Now you can add remove the files which you don t need for your application In our case let s delete chart dir tests dir ingress yaml and hpa yaml as we don t need these for our demo Step Now we need to provide the image where our application has been wrapped and needs to be deployed In our case as I already mentioned above we already have our application wrapped in an image and pushed in public container registry so I will be using it Feel free to use it if you don t have your own image One of the benefits of helm charts as we discussed we just need to make changes in our values yaml which contains the parameters extracted from all the resources which we want to deploy In the files we just have to add our own image details and we are done with the bare min config to deploy our application In the default value yaml file there are a lot different parameters which can be tweaked as per our requirements As you can see an extract of few parameters from values yaml where I have just manipulated the image details and added fullnameOverride rest everything goes default replicaCount image repository alex go demo app pullPolicy IfNotPresent Overrides the image tag whose default is the chart appVersion tag v imagePullSecrets nameOverride fullnameOverride go app Now you can make these changes and save the file Step Since we are ready with the necessary changes now we can install our chart To install the chart in default namesapce we can use the following command helm install go app demo go app If we want to install the chart in specific namespace we can use the following command It will create a new namespace and will install the chart in that namespace If the namespace already exists we can omit the create namespace parameterhelm install go app demo go app create namespace namespace helm appTo verify weather the helm app has been created or not we can simply use the following command with the namespace where it was installed as you can see in the below image helm list n helm appNow we have successfully installed deployed our ks application with helm chart Now let s play a bit around helm chart In the values yaml let s say if we want to add some more parameters which we want to configure while installation or upgrading the chart we can easily do that From deployment yaml for instance we want to make containerPort a generic parameter by passing it in values yaml file so that it can be changed or updated while installation To pass any value we need to grab the values by using the syntax Values lt AttributeNameGiven in Values yaml gt Add a parameter in values yaml file say port containerPort Now add the following in the containerport parameter in your deployment yaml so that it can receive the values passed through values yamlports name http containerPort Values port containerPort protocol TCPNow if you want to check if the Values you added is properly working or not you can render the chart locally by using the below command It will render all the templates with values given in values yaml This is mostly used to debug and test your custom created helm charts helm template debug go demo app The output would look like something in the below image if there isn t any error The advantage of doing so is that we can override the values while installing or upgrading the chart just by using a parameter called set Lets upgrade the chart which we have installed helm upgrade go app demo go app set port containerPort n helm appThe command will update the installed chart and will also update the REVISION automatically as you can see in the below image Similarly we can update any parameter passed in values yaml file while installation or upgradation Now if we want to access our deployed application just copy paste the commands given in NOTES section after upgrading the chart It will port forward the port number of your localhost to the container port you have given In our case we set it to so the output would look something like the below image Now if you visit you would be able to see your application In my case I have given an endpoint layout html so I will be able to see my application at the given endpoint as you can see in the image below So this was all about helm and how you can create your own helm charts and deploy over ks Now if you want to delete the chart installed simply execute the below command It will delete all the resources it created along with it helm delete go app n helm appSince we are familiar with the helm chart concepts let s talk a bit about its advantages and some of its challenges Advantages of Helm ChartsCan package complex applications to deploy over ksEasy to get started with per defined templatesCan use nested helm charts as dependenciesValues can be overridden while installation and you don t have to create helm charts for different environmentsJust one click away for deploying all the resources of a ks applicationHelm by default maintains the database of REVISIONs version providing an ease to rollback if something goes wrongEasy collaborations among team and scalability Challenges with Helm ChartsIt can easily package complex applications but creating a helm chart for complex applications is itself quite complexTroubleshooting and debugging is quite difficult in helm for complex applications as it uses templates for different resourcesIt doesn t provide any UI to manage applications deployed through helm In scenarios where s of helm charts are deployed it would be very difficult to manage helm apps So What next Introducing HyperionIn the blog we have talked about helm its requirements creating helm charts its advantages and some of its challenges To overcome
