How Can You Use Metaphors To Elevate Your Writing |
https://dev.to/gobookmart2/how-can-you-use-metaphors-to-elevate-your-writing-132g
|
How Can You Use Metaphors To Elevate Your WritingMetaphors are a distinctive trope of language which allow readers to make associations Basically metaphors allow readers to connect the literal with the figurative making the known stand for the unknown They are vehicles to creating meaning and can be very impactful if used wisely Here are five ways to use metaphors to your advantage while writing Apply Vuong s sensory and logical connect theoryOcean Vuong one of the best modern day poets in his theory on the metaphor which he expounds on his Instagram page breaks the metaphor down into two elements He says that the two ideas words or elements we attempt to link together by means of a metaphor must have a sensory as well as a logical connection A sensory connection could be visual textural auditory or gustatory but it should align with the original word and amplify its meaning On the other hand a logical connector serves to cement the semantics of the metaphor The metaphorical word or idea should add on the original meaning without detracting from what the original wants to convey Use vivid imagery and borrowing emotional content to convey meaningThe basis of a metaphor is imagery Readers use imagery to connect one meaning to another So it s important to nail imagery while using metaphors One way to do this is to tap into imagination Using one word or phrase instead of a whole description to transfer meaning from the original to the allusive is the essence of a metaphor Similarly metaphors also rely on borrowing emotional content This means that the metaphor should augment the emotional appeal of the original Using descriptions of nature or objects around that confer feelings of nostalgia despondency or joy according to the mood can elevate writing |

|
A Visual Explanation of React Server ComponentsI ve been digging into React Server Components via Shopify Hydrogen and I m very impressed amp excitedHere is a visual explanation of my understanding of RSC and what it means for you First how do you author server components In short they are just React components With all the latest goodies of concurrent mode such as elegantly fetching data via hooksServer components can even fetch private data and are denoted by a file ending in server js Next how do you load these components For Hydrogen the top level is always a server component But with some caveats you can mix server components client aka traditional components and shared components components that can render on server OR client in one tree So how do pages load Because of the benefits of concurrent mode like suspense we can load pages via streamsFor instance with my Hydrogen app the header loads immediately as HTML and then the body which has dynamic data streams in each piece as it is ready For the nerds I find the streaming format very interestingIt is a mix of metadata and VDOM JSON It is separated by newlines so each line can be processed at a time not having to wait for the final result to parse the bodyIt is fetched as react state pathname Then the coolest part client side routingClient side routing is done without a refresh and doesn t require any new JS to loadThe client fetches the new VDOM from the server which may process lots of JS that doesn t need to load in browserAs it streams in React patches in the minimal changes to the DOM The resultThe result is a pretty great experience With some caveats about new mental overhead in needing to have some concern about where is the best place to put certain data and logic client server shared you have a very new very performant way to build fast dynamic React apps One more thingWhy have we been diving in We ve been integrating Builder io to Hydrogen and having a blast It s a great new set of tools to build with for your whole team |

Kubernetes and Apache Cassandra: What Works (and What Doesn’t) |
https://dev.to/datastax/kubernetes-and-apache-cassandra-what-works-and-what-doesnt-37n7
|
Kubernetes and Apache Cassandra What Works and What Doesn t “I need it now and I need it reliable ANYONE WHO HASN T DEPLOYED APPLICATION INFRASTRUCTUREIf you re on the receiving end of this statement we understand you here in the Kssandra community Although we do have reason for hope Recent surveys have shown that Kubernetes Ks is growing in popularity not only because it s powerful technology but because it actually delivers on reducing the toil of deployment Deploy an application on Kubernetes and it s easy to miss the almost magical complex orchestration that happens as compute network and storage are all aligned into what you declared in a YAML file With the size and scale of applications we need for modern cloud applications we could certainly use a little magic While Kubernetes is the go to orchestration platform to run distributed applications in the cloud Cassandra provides a dependable distributed database environment If you go back to when we were using shell scripts on bare metal you ll find Apache Cassandra proudly growing with the tech stacks of companies like Uber Spotify and Netflix Known for its robust distributed and scalable infrastructure ーwith no single point of failure and high availability ーit s the top choice for any business operating large scale cloud applications that need to reliably maintain their “always on services It s common to Cassandra and Ks described as the “most logical pairing since they allow you to keep your data and operations close for better performance at scale So let s take a closer look at what makes Cassandra and Ks a dream team ーand why this isn t always true Why Cassandra and Ks work so well togetherLike any great story of modern infrastructure it all started with the need to scale Before the term “cloud native became mainstream Cassandra was inspired by the distributed storage and replication techniques from Amazon s DynamoDB as well as the data storage engine model from Google s Bigtable The idea was to build the best of both into one package to help guarantee availability and resiliency for large scale business critical applications Guided by a similar philosophy Kubernetes boasts a leaderless architecture that also makes it reliable easy to scale and highly available The main difference is that Cassandra is a shared nothing architecture i e nodes don t share memory or storage whereas Kubernetes has a primary node ーthe control plane ーwhich runs across multiple machines to provide fault tolerance Essentially both Cassandra and Kubernetes are distributed systems designed to meet the snowballing requirements for data and storage in global scale apps It s unlikely we ll have less data and infrastructure in the future so we need strategies that embody the following ideas Scale Cassandra and Ks both allow for horizontal or vertical scaling and are both based on nodes which lets developers expand or shrink their infrastructure with no downtime or third party software You can simply tell Ks by how much you want to resize your Cassandra cluster and let it deal with the logistics Elasticity With the ability to dynamically add or remove nodes developers can build and run distributed applications that automatically scale based on demand to free resources outside of peak load periods One of the more critical elements of controlling costs in scale infrastructure is finding ways to prevent paying for idle resources Self healing Ks will instantly redeploy failed containerized apps and Cassandra makes it easy to recover failed nodes without losing any data thanks to its built in replication For example Spotify uses Cassandra to easily replicate the data between their EU and US data centers allowing Spotify s music personalization system to reach their users if any single center should experience a failure The reason both Ks and Cassandra can accomplish similar things is rooted in the architecture of distributed systems Namely building systems that act as a team where no one piece is critical When comparing Figure to Figure you can see some basic similarities nodes act independently and communicate via a network to coordinate and exchange data The concept of a node in distributed computing is a basic unit of scale and resilience Cassandra overlays nicely on a Ks cluster with concerns for compute network and storage being managed independently Again the main difference is the control plane which leads us to our next point How sometimes they don t work well togetherIt would appear Kubernetes and Cassandra are highly compatible and can coexist peacefully in your tech stack After all they re both distributed scalable and resilient ーexcept they re actually more like two pieces from different puzzles that don t quite fit together without some elbow grease Take Cassandra operators for example In Kubernetes the compute and storage are separate rather than managed as a group So in a failure scenario Ks could replace a node without attaching the precious storage data The challenge is keeping the storage with the Cassandra node that owns the data which is simple to do using operators like cass operator instead of hours of manual work In recent years we ve seen a flurry of open source technologies designed to solve some of the challenges around Ks and Cassandra Kssandra for example is a production ready open source project that abstracts away the transactional and operational aspects of Cassandra deployments making it easy to deploy and manage Cassandra on any Ks engine and they mean any As compatible as Ks and Cassandra may be sometimes you don t want to have to piece things together you just want the full picture pre assembled so you can move on to building better things The bottom line is there s a growing need for a cloud native database that s inherently designed for Kubernetes One that s built to leverage its capabilities not dance around them In the next post we ll take a closer look at how Cassandra pushes the boundaries of Ks and explore how the pipe dream of a cloud native database designed specifically for Ks might not be just a dream after all Curious to learn more about or play with Cassandra itself We recommend trying it on the Astra DB free plan for the fastest setup ResourcesKssandra Apache Cassandraon KubernetesGitHub KssandraKubernetes ArchitectureThe Dynamo Paper David JavaScript Basics #10: Node.js |
https://dev.to/ericnanhu/javascript-basics-10-nodejs-11n8
|
JavaScript Basics Node jsYou can download the source code for this tutorial here Download the Source CodeAt the beginning of this course I promised that we ll be using JavaScript the traditional way exclusively as a frontend language But I still like to give a brief introduction to Node js and how to use JavaScript on the backend The purpose of this article is to help you further understand how the server works and how it communicates with the frontend and prepares you for our future courses on Lavavel and Django Before we start create a new folder on your computer Make sure that all the installing creating and updating that we do in this tutorial happens in this folder About Node jsNode js is a JavaScript runtime that allows us to run JavaScript on almost any platform not just the browser After you install Node js on your system you will have a program named node and you can use it to run JavaScript files like this node example jsIf the file example js contains the following code console log Hello World The output will be Hello World This is very similar to what we ve seen when JavaScript is run in browsers so I will not waste any more of your time on this Installing and Managing PackagesWhen you install Node js on your system a package manager called npm would also be installed Unless you are using Linux in which case you ll need to install it separately The primary use of npm is to download and manage JavaScript packages that are required by your application A package is a piece of program that is written and published by someone else and simply grab it and use it in your own application For example you are building an app that requires the package called ini run the following command in the terminal Make sure you are in the correct folder npm install iniWhen you first run this command npm will create three different things in your working directory First a new folder named node modules which stores the package you just installed And there are also two JSON files package json and package lock json Both of them are used for version control Their difference is that the package lock json stores the exact version of the package while package json stores the minimum version that is required as well as any other information about the app You can easily tell their difference by comparing them side by side To use the package we just installed use the require method const parse require ini We can perform some actions using the variable parse If you are interested in learning more about the npm tool and how to manage packages with it you can go to for more documentation But for now we don t need to know too much about it The File System ModuleBefore we can start building our backend app there are two JavaScript packages I d like to introduce the http module and the fs module We ll use the http module to create a server and use the fs module to read and write to a file which we ll use as a database to store information Let s first start with the file system fs module This package is built into Node js so we don t need to install anything in this case Instead we ll create a new js file for the code and a txt file for the JavaScript to read and write We ll import the module like we talked about before import the fs modulelet readFile require fs specify the file we want to read as well as the charset encoding formatreadFile data txt utf error text gt If there is an error reading the file if error throw error If no error print the content of the file console log text We can also write to the file like this const writeFile require fs writeFile data txt Hello World Hello World error gt if error console log error else console log File written In this case it is not necessary to specify the encoding format If writeFile is given a string it will simply assume the default format which is UTF The HTTP ModuleAnother very important module we need to talk about is http it allows us to create an HTTP server using JavaScript For example const createServer require http let server createServer request response gt If a request is recieved return a OK response along with some other information response writeHead Content Type text html The body of the HTTP response response write lt h gt Hello World lt h gt The response ends response end Make the HTTP server listen on port server listen console log Listening port The variables request and response each represents an object storing the incoming and the outgoing data For instance you can access the url property of the request by using request url This example is very simple but in reality the backend servers are usually more complex So next let s try something more challenging We are going to create a simple app that asks for your name and once you submit your name the data will be stored in a txt file which acts as a database When you visit the web page again it will greet you with your name A Simple App ServerStep one we ll create a backend without worrying about the database Let s create a new JavaScript file named server js const createServer require http let server createServer request response gt request on data function request on end function server listen console log Listening port This is very similar to our previous example but this time we ll use event listeners to configure the server The first event we are listening to is data which means when the HTTP request is transmitting data In this case we should extract the information we need to use from the request The second event is end which means when the request is not transmitting data in this case the server should respond with some information Initialize the variable name let name request on data function chunk chunk is the data being transferred name name chunk The data is in name value pair name value So we need to split the name and the value name name split request on end function response writeHead Content Type text html For now we ll use the data directly without a database Just to test if it works response write lt h gt Hello name lt h gt lt p gt What is your name lt p gt lt form method POST action example message html gt lt p gt Name lt input type text name name gt lt p gt lt p gt lt button type submit gt Submit lt button gt lt p gt lt form gt response end Run the server with the following command node server jsOpen our browser and go to http localhost Submit your name and see if anything changes DatabaseHowever this data is only temporary It will be lost if you restart the server or refresh the browser What if you want to store the data for a bit longer Now we ll create a new file called data txt and we ll use it to store the name you submitted const createServer require http const fileSystem require fs let server createServer request response gt To make things more clear name is used when writing to file myName is used when reading from file let name let myName request on data function chunk name name chunk name name split name name Write the data to data txt fileSystem writeFile data txt name function error if error throw error request on end function response writeHead Content Type text html Read the data from file fileSystem readFile data txt utf error text gt if error throw error myName text response write lt h gt Hello myName lt h gt lt p gt What is your name lt p gt lt form method POST action example message html gt lt p gt Name lt input type text name name gt lt p gt lt p gt lt button type submit gt Submit lt button gt lt p gt lt form gt response end server listen console log Listening port Notice the syntax when importing the packages const xxx require xxx is importing a method from a package and const xxx require xxx is importing the entire package and we can access one of the methods using xxx methodName Run this server and resubmit your name this time if you open the data txt file you will see that the data has been written to the file |
