Build a Quote Generator with JavaScript Your first API projectIf you ve never worked with an API Application Programming Interface before WELCOME I assure you that this is going to be an excellent first time The purpose of this tutorial is simple to allow you to work with an API by making a single request and display its info on the screen That s it No tricks And we ll probably do it in like lines of JavaScript How exciting is that So to summarize in this tutorial you ll learn a bunch of stuff like selecting elements on the DOMonClick eventstrigger a fetch for an APIdisplaying info in empty elementsIf you re really just interested on the code here s a link to the CodePen with it What s an API We should clarify on what s an API if that s something new to you An API is an intermediary that allows for two applications to talk between them and it will have a set of functions that allow applications to access data and interact with external software components operating systems or services The most widely practical example to describe an API is the following think of a waiter at a restaurant When you application get at a restaurant you place your order request with the waiter API and he tells the kitchen application the kitchen then makes your order gives it to the waiter and the waiter gives it to you response In our tutorial we ll use an API that fetches data from a server and we ll use the Fetch API to facilitate that communication that means that we ll actually be using two APIs in this tutorial That s enough theory for now but if you do have any doubts please message me on Twitter Starting with the HTMLEvery web app needs its HTML and ours is no different Our HTML for this application is incredibly straight forward and all you need is a button and a div with an id So your HTML will look something like this lt button onclick getQuote gt Get quote lt button gt lt div id insertQuoteHere gt That s it job done We can now move to the interesting part The JavaScriptMost of the APIs require you to deal with secrets but that s out of the scope of this tutorial so we ll be using a completely free one called kanye rest I know I know Get our divSo the first thing that we ll need to do is to get our lt div id insertQuoteHere gt because we need it readily availably to insert our quote into it For that we ll use getElementById if you don t know what that is it s a method that will an object that represents the element with the id that we pass as parameter So in this case this is going to be our first line of JavaScript const divWithQuote document getElementById insertQuoteHere Create our functionWe need to create our getQuote function and this function will do the request and print the data into our divWithQuote You ll see me using an arrow function but you can use a regular function expression Let s declare our empty functionconst getQuote gt The requestNow that we have our function we ll run the fetch function provided by the Fetch API which will fetch well duh our data const getQuote gt fetch If you know click on the button you won t see anything happening BUT Congratulations you just made your first request Now let s deal with its data The basic format for any fetch request is as follows fetch API URL then response gt response json then data gt console log data Now some stuff here may look weird so let s go through them The then method will wait for a response from the request and execute whatever is inside itOur response will look like an HTTP response which means that we need to extract the content from it and that s WORKING WITH PLAY WITH IT Code might be confusing and scary but the best way of dealing with that it to play with it and get to know it so don t be afraid to throw random console log around From data to HTMLWe ve basically done everything that we need for our application to work All we re missing is to get that quote into our HTML and to do that we ll use innerHTML While logging our data we can see that there s an object inside with a single property quote so we can reference it by doing data quote and we ll get its value by doing so This means that we can do the same for our innerHTML like The Treacherous Road to Employment The twists and turns we all experience while looking for that new gig Let alone a new career it can be overwhelming Currently I m attempting my third shot at finding an open door into the programming world The third time is the charm or so they say LOL My first experience emboldened me I got quite a few offers right out of college although the majority of them required relocation They were to states that I didn t know anything about or anyone It was hard to turndown but with a young family it was too risky Then low and behold the too good to be true job A remote position with just a few in office meetings ️I completed the phone interviews and simple code review not a test Everything was falling into place The code review was explaining what a couple of pages of code were doing It was written in a language I was unfamiliar with and without any comments but the variable names were enough It accessed a database to check usernames for birthdates to confirm age verification My response was met with satisfaction Then the BIG BLOW Due to fears of an economic recession the company decided to downsize the project eliminating the need for ME ️Fortunately I had a separate career opportunity present itself Fate It has supported my family and allowed me to have a stable lifestyle Though it has shortfalls mainly little room to grow and lack of testing mental aptitude I m eager to grow and put my mind to use Then I jumped into a Google Python course through Coursera It was a great interactive program that got me excited about programming again So I was back on the road to finding that developer job I pulled back onto the road just to get T boned by Covid Well we all know what happened to the job market during It did open quite a few more remote jobs after things started to stabilize Only to be flooded with resumes from s of hopeful developers Yikes Impossible I received a few of the generic email responses from places that I applied to but not much interest I was stumped Yes there were hundreds of great resumes but mine got me to the proverbial door before what s changed Life kept me busy and I gave the job hunt another break Then I woke up one day and realized it is time So I started to look at my resume and online presence My resume looked bleak and my GitHub was simply a disaster No wonder there was no interest in my last attempt I have started to expand and improve my online footprint so that it will be easier to see what kind of programmer I am Also I have started to research cities with greater tech opportunities What challenges or roadblocks have you encountered battling the job market How have you been able to succeed Feel free to share your experience or leave words of encouragement to everyone on this journey |

function in OOPs Concepts It is a set of instructions that are associated with an object Static Method A static method is a method that belongs to a class but it does not belong to an instance of that class and this method can be called without the instance or object of that class Non static methods can access any static method and static variable without creating an instance of the object Overloading Overloading is a compile time polymorphism feature in which an entity has multiple implementations with the same name Overriding Whereas Overriding is a runtime polymorphism feature in which an entity has the same name but its implementation changes during execution Exception An exception can be considered as a special event which is raised during the execution of a program at runtime that brings the execution to a halt Exception handling It is the mechanism for identifying the undesirable states that the program can reach and specifying the desirable outcomes of such states Try catch is the most common method used for handling exceptions in the program Garbage Collection It refers to the mechanism of handling the memory in the program Through garbage collection the unwanted memory is freed up by removing the objects that are no longer needed Interface v s Abstract class difference Interface and abstract classes both are special types of classes that contain compile time What it means is that the compiler decides what shape or value has to be taken by the entity in the picture Runtime Polymorphism Runtime polymorphism also known as Dynamic Polymorphism overloading is a compile time polymorphism Method overriding is a run time polymorphism It helps to increase the readability of the program It is used to grant the specific implementation of the signature In method overloading the return type can or can not be the same but we just have to change the parameter In method overriding the return type must be the same or co variant Overloading and Overriding in JavaScriptJavaScript does not support function overloading natively If we will add functions with the same name and different arguments it considers the last defined function It is true that JavaScript supports overriding not overloading When you define multiple functions which has the same name the last one defined will override all the previously defined ones and every time when A Beginner s Guide To Postman File UploadsPostman is a REST client tool for testing and deploying API services in a controlled workspace Postman simplifies collaboration at each step of the API lifecycle to help you manage an API repository down to its specifications documentation and various test cases This platform utilizes intelligent tools that gather valuable insights on your API processes and is compatible with integrated software for storing source code diving into CI CD pipelines monitoring performance data triggering incident alerts and much more A Postman upload file API is ready to use whenever you initiate a REST service on a remote server via a file format If you need to download upload or visualize files that can be done through a Postman template It will accept files written in any programming language although HTML is optimal for viewing the content in web browsers Let s take a closer look at the file processing feature in this next tutorial How do you upload a file using Postman Begin by calling the API using a POST HTTP request to launch a Postman template Create a file processing method under the collections tab with options to upload download or visualize the specified file Uploading the file is fairly straightforward Make a postman echo request delete the body contents and construct a form data body to see the file as it s being uploaded Then click on “body and select form data as the body type Assign a key to the file value so it reflects to “select files Click on that to open a window menu and find your file Click open and the file will be automatically uploaded onto Postman It should add a header and set the content type to multipart form data Once you press send a response is generated in the terminal which has the file path and its string value in a raw format Encoded in base it preserves the integrity of your file as it gets sent over the internet and allows you to view the contents within text applications The metadata below shows the file type Uploading a file to the repository is not the same since you re calling the request from your Postman workspace Create a PUT request and be sure to add your API call to the Customizing time ranges for budgets in the consoleTL DR You can now use the Google Cloud Console to customize the time ranges of your budgets Technically you re saving money because the month is shorter right Good news everyone If you manage your budgets through the Google Cloud Console you can now choose custom time ranges for your budgets Those of you dedicated readers who have been following the billing blogs may have seen the previous posts about using the Budget API as well as using the API to customize the budget period In this short post I ll show you how to do the same thing right in the console Budgets and time rangesFirst things first here s a guide on how budgets work and why you should be using them to keep an eye on your cloud costs Up until recently budgets were measured against costs for a month starting on the first day and ending on the last day Of course sometimes you want to measure spending in different ways With this update you can choose what time range a budget should apply to There are four options here Monthly the default for budgets starting on the first day of each month and ending on the last day of each month January st through January st for example Quarterly an even split of the year into four quarters starting on January st April st July st and October stYearly the whole year starting with January stCustom choose any start date and optional end date to measure spending forMonthly quarterly and yearly budgets are repeated and will measure your spending against the specific amount you provide or the dynamic amount of the last period For example let s magically pretend it s April nd If you set up a quarterly budget and choose a target amount of you ll be able to measure your spending from April st through June st If you instead choose Last quarter s spend for the amount you ll measure spending against the last quarter This is a great way to measure comparable spending and make sure that you re informed as soon as possible about any surprises or take action by setting up a programmatic budget notification Assuming this is April nd that amount is automatically populated with my spending from Jan st March stMonthly quarterly and yearly budgets all work the same way and you can always set multiple thresholds for a budget such as and of the target amount You can even use forecasted amounts to get notifications as soon as Google Cloud predicts you ll be spending that much which is kind of like having an overly specific crystal ball Custom ranges allow for serious flexibility Custom time ranges are a bit different and work by choosing a start date and optionally choosing an end date This is pretty straightforward but it s important to note that custom time ranges do not repeat Not including an end date means your budget will track spending continuously from the start date and you can be notified when you hit certain amounts One great example of this could be tracking spending against a fixed grant amount so you can get notified as you re approaching the grant limit You may even want to use a programmatic notification to shut down resources as you approach the limit Of course including an end date will limit the amount of time your budget is active for and may be good for busy periods like a holiday season increase in demand Plan aheadNow that you know about time ranges you can create all kinds of budgets to fit your needs I definitely recommend having multiple budgets so you can more closely track specific spending such as tracking BigQuery costs in your data projects or Compute Engine costs in your development and testing environments The right budgets to set up will depend on your organization but taking the time to think about what budget information is valuable can be the difference between getting a timely notification or simply creating a filter to delete budget emails because they re filling up your inbox Check out the other blog posts if you d like to learn more or use this interactive tutorial to help you set one up Happy budgeting Related ArticleGoogle Cloud billing tutorials Because surprises are for home makeover shows not your walletLet s face it billing is probably not the most fun or glamorous part of building an app or service but it s definitely one of the most Read Article |
