The many Quirks of Javascript Dates |
https://dev.to/smpnjn/the-many-quirks-of-javascript-dates-19do
|
The many Quirks of Javascript DatesJavascript dates are weird Famously Brendan Eich wrote the first version of Javascript in days and the Date function itself was no exception It is based off code that was ultimately deprecated in Java That means Javascript has inherited a Date function which was found to be buggy and problematic in Java leaving it full of issues You may have even encountered some issues yourself You may be wondering then what s so weird about it Let s look at all the quirks and common pitfalls with Javascript s Date constructor so you can avoid them Javascript doesn t actually Support DatesIt sounds counterintuitive given the main Javascript date constructor is called Date but Javascript does not actually support dates Javascript only supports date times All Javascript dates are Unix timestamps underneath That means if we try to create a date we actually are creating a date time All Javascript dates with no time specified default to midnight on that given day let date new Date Notice the date produced has a time attached Tue Feb GMT Greenwich Mean Time Parsing DatesParsing dates as we did above works fine if you know months start at but parsing date strings vary significantly across browsers It is strongly advised to not parse date strings Before the ECMAScript specification how Date parsed string dates was never defined and different browsers have many historical quirks that make it very unreliable According to the current specification only strings conforming to the ISO standard should be parsable by Javascript and any other dates should return NaN i e let parseMyDate Date parse T However that is not the case Many browsers allow date parsing outside of this format This is where it has the potential to get confusing Let s say you want to parse a date format in standard dd mm yyyy date format You take a standard date and pass it into the parse function let myDate new Date console log myDate In all modern browsers this uses the US date format i e mm dd yyyy meaning it returns May st not Jan th leading to unexpected results Parsing Dates Defaults to UTCSuppose you have a date which has no time or timezone associated with it let myDate Date parse Jan console log myDate You might think there is nothing immediately confusing about this it represents a fixed date in time However If your timezone is UTC this will return If your timezone is UTC this will return i e hours more If your timezone is UTC this will return i e hours less So if your timezone is west of UTC for example Javascript subtracts hours from the Unix timestamp Since days start at midnight That means if we try to use this timestamp with a different timezone for example in a backend system we wouldn t get st Jan we get st Dec All of this is because Javascript does not implement dates every date has a time associated with it in this case midnight Months start at in Javascript DatesIf we want to create a date in Javascript we can parse numbers representing year month and day For example if we want to create a date for Feb nd we d write this right let date new Date Only that gives us Tue Mar GMT Greenwich Mean Time That s because months in Javascript start counting from so February is not let date new Date Incorrect Dates Skip to Next MonthLet s say you have accidentally create an incorrect date say st Feb You pass this into your date function by mistake from a database or API let date new Date You might think that this will just return Invalid Date or NaN but you d be wrong Javascript skips to the next month until it finds the right date so this will actually return st March Strings are not Parsed to NumbersThe weirdest behaviour of all is when we don t give Javascript entire strings in parse For example let myDate new Date console log myDate You might think that this will return the year or perhaps the unix epoch but it actually returns the year Sat Jan GMT Greenwich Mean Time Even more strangely though if we try to increase this it starts counting in months console log new Date Tue May GMT British Summer Time console log new Date Thu Nov GMT Greenwich Mean Time console log new Date Sun Apr GMT British Summer Time To top it off if you try to do new Date we ll get Invalid Date as the result since there is no th month Number times are affected by timezoneIf we only pass one number to new Date it will treat it as the Unix timestamp however it is not adjusted for timezone For example in UTC the following code returns Thu Jan GMT Greenwich Mean Time console log new Date That makes sense since it s the Unix epoch however if we are in UTC that code returns Wed Dec GMT Eastern Standard Time i e hours before the Unix epoch That means if we expected the date to be st Jan we immediately have an issue Years are really inconsistentYou might have thought we ve gotten off easy and only timestamps and timezones are broken but even years are inconsistent If we wanted to create a date for the st Jan in the year you might think we d write this console log new Date Since months start from this looks right but actually if the year is less than means the year Alright you might think I suppose this should return st Jan instead but that s actually wrong sometimes too The above code returns Sun Dec GMT Greenwich Mean Time for me adjusting backwards for my timezone Here are a few other examples console log new Date Sun Dec GMT Greenwich Mean Time console log new Date Sat Dec GMT Greenwich Mean Time console log new Date Tue Dec GMT Greenwich Mean Time console log new Date Mon Dec GMT Greenwich Mean Time As soon as you get above the year it then does go back to counting the years normally So the below code actually gives us the year not the year console log new Date Fri Dec GMT Greenwich Mean Time This may be useful if you are using years after but it is incredibly counterintuitive for anything before Why doesn t anyone fix Javascript Dates The Javascript Date function is fundamentally broken in many ways which is why most people use tools like Moment js but why hasn t it been fixed The main reason is because most of the web has been built on code that took into consideration the flaws with Date As such changing now would result in many websites simply breaking To remedy this situation Javascript is introducing a totally new set of standards called Temporal which will occupy a different namespace than Date and will solve most of the problems described in this article Until then we are stuck with the the quirks Javascript Dates produce If you re interested in learning more here are some useful links Learn more about date functions Moment js A great video on Javascript dates by Matt Johnson Temporal Specification |

Why public/private keys is bad terminolgy |
https://dev.to/dagnelies/why-publicprivate-keys-is-bad-terminolgy-9k1
|
Why public private keys is bad terminolgyThis is a rather small historical technology detail but I think it is a bit sad that cryptography coined the public and private key pair terminology I think it causes confusion for those unfamiliar with this subject For example Why are there two keys Why is one public and one private If I want to SSH to a remote server using a key pair which one should I put there I think it would have been much more clear if the public key would have been called a lock and the private key simply the key Everything would fit together more nicely It would be more intuitive and easier to grasp even for noobs I even think it would have improved the overall security For instance I have often seen the wrong key or even both keys placed in various places because it wasn t clear for users which of the two keys belongs where The take away is to please think of the public key as a lock You can place it everywhere like on a door but never let your private keys lay around |

2022 is the year of Design Systems |
https://dev.to/federicabruno/2022-is-the-year-of-design-systems-2h54
|
is the year of Design Systems Reasons you and your company should use Design System for your next digital productNowadays web applications are integral parts of our lives There is an app for everything we need bank transactions shopping bureaucracy medical services etc…In the last decades the usage of the internet has changed and so have web applications Today crucial parts of web pages are the UI User Interface and the UX User Experience It does mean that companies are more interested in how their site looks and how a user interacts with it Several years ago before the internet became so popular the UI and UX of websites weren t as important as they are today Companies were more interested in how a site worked than in how it looked But then the internet became widespread and companies started to develop more elaborate apps at UI and UX levels and users slowly began to get used to it So more and more companies started to follow this trend to keep up with the demand Nowadays apps with bad UI would get no attention from users because now they are used to apps with simple comprehensible interfaces Thereafter companies developed a lot of different “strategies to simplify and improve web applications development An important breakthrough has been the introduction of the Design System What is a Design System There are many definitions of what a Design System is The one I like the most because I think goes directly to the point is A design system is a collection of reusable components guided by clear standards that can be assembled to build any number of applications Design Systems also include color palettesicons librariestypography stylesThis allows a developer to compose components in different ways building consistent applications almost effortless In particular over the last few years remote work has spread widely both for Covid and the diffusion of collaborations between teams located in different cities or countries So Design System is a great help in these situations when communication between teams is limited because following the same standards rules and using the same components prevents the need to talk often with the rest of the team Also developers should use reusable components avoiding building new ones for an important reason to reduce the time of coding Sparkbox a case studyA Sparkbox study had confirmed that Design Systems improve developer efficiency and design consistency In this case study the Sparkbox team tested eight developers to code a form at first from scratch and then with a famous Design System IBM s Carbon Design System They noticed that Carbon made the coding of the form faster than coding it from scratch hours versus hours It does mean that the usage of a Design System in the development of large web applications would significantly reduce the development time and costs avoiding inconsistency Source It all started with the Atomic ModelDesign System is an evolution or rather a derivate and elaborated side effect of the UI design based on Brad Frost s Atomic Model The main concept of this model is breaking down interfaces into smaller components such as organisms molecules and atoms The five levels in an atomic design are atoms the basic building blocks of matter such as buttons labels inputmolecules a set of atoms For example input form a combination of two atoms a button and an input organisms a group of molecules that form a section of an interface such as the top bartemplates sets of organisms that form pages So you can build a web application starting from simple and reusable components and then putting them together to create more complex ones In this way the process is easier and also faster Source Famous Design SystemsSince the concept of Design System was introduced some of the most famous companies made their own Design System Here are some examples Microsoft developed Fluent UI a collection of UX frameworks for building apps for different platforms such as macOS iOS Windows and Android Sources Google introduced Material Design its Design System designed for Android in It helps developers to build applications for Android iOS and web Sources IBM developed Carbon an open source Design System with design tools and resources Its purpose is to help build complex Design Systems Carbon is available for React Svelte Vue js and Web Components Sources Main advantages of Design SystemsIt brings order into your product Design Systems make your product more consistent In fact using reusable components is great because you don t need to re write the code of components every time you use them So you avoid mistakes and inconsistency due to different styles in the code Every element will have a unified style and this leads to a product with a great User Interface It helps you to code faster but maintain quality With components ready to use you ll save time while coding because you don t need to build them over and over All you have to do is put existing components together to create your pages This also means that developers can focus on more complex problems avoiding disorder and bugs due to hasty development It increases business value A McKinsey amp Company s report confirmed the correlation between Design and business value This study reveals that design led companies have more than higher revenue and higher Total Shareholder Return TSR compared with other companies Source Good documentation Design System guarantees good documentation of the product For example this is important because it allows new developers in the team to learn faster about the system To maintain brand personality Brands that don t follow good style guides while developing different apps end up with inconsistent products Apps are different from each other and customers may not associate them with the same brand Google Apple Microsoft and other important companies follow the same style while developing their apps You can easily associate two apps to the same company just by looking at the style without any direct reference to the brand Also a new app of one of these companies would be easy to use from their customers because users already know what an icon means how pages are structured where the settings might be etc…So following style guides is important because it will be easier for customers to navigate in an application similar to one they already use and also they can recognize if different apps belong to the same brand or not More and more companies are focusing on the UI and UX of their products and Design Systems are a good choice to achieve good results saving resources You can create your own library and guidelines with the help of tools such as Figma or Sketch and Storybook Building a new Design System might seem difficult but with consolidated ideas good knowledge of the domain and what the customer wants you can build a product that reflects the identity of the company and what it wants to communicate Else if you are new in the world of design using Design Systems from other companies Carbon Material Design etc… could help you to explore and learn how it works in order to create your own ideas on how you want your product looks like Take a cue but create your ownThere are many low level libraries to help you build your own Design System Rather than customizing pre built Design Systems you could find it easier or more straightforward to start almost from scratch by making leverage on libraries that helps you with low level components like ReachUI it is defined as “Reach UI is an accessible foundation for React applications and design systems The main goals are accessible composable and stylable Read more at RadixUI it is a low level UI component library focused on accessibility customization and developer experience Source HeadlessUI this is a library with unstyled fully accessible components designed to be integrated with Tailwind CSS Source I hope you found this article helpful and that it helped you to understand the benefits of a Design System If you liked it please give me a follow Original source Medium |

Apple x s Studio Display uses a unique power connection but don x t pull it outThe Studio Display uses a non standard power connector on the back but while it is technically removable most users shouldn t pull that cable out While most computer monitors on the market use a standard power connector that allows the cable to be plugged in and removed easily Apple went down a different route for the Studio Display It uses its own connection for the cable as well as shipping the monitor with the cable attached and in place The design is a departure from the norm for Apple as most of its Mac related hardware uses removable power connectors The similarly styled inch iMac uses a magnetic connection at the same spot that the power connects in the Studio Display but here it is fixed in place Read more |
