GraphQL The new RESTGraphQL was created in by Facebook as a way to make it easier for developers to fetch the data they need from the Facebook API GraphQL provides a complete and understandable description of the data in your API gives clients the power to ask for exactly what they need and nothing more makes it easier to evolve APIs over time and enables powerful developer tools What Is really GraphQL GraphQL is a query language for APIs and a runtime for fulfilling those queries with your existing data GraphQL provides a complete and understandable description of the data in your API gives clients the power to ask for exactly what they need and nothing more makes it easier to evolve APIs over time and enables powerful developer tools What makes GraphQl different from REST GraphQL is a query language for your API not just a data format This means that you can query for exactly what you need and get back clean easy to use data is type safe This means that you can be sure that the data you re getting back from your API is the data you expect and that it s valid is self documenting When you query the GraphQL API you also get back documentation for the fields and types that are available is backed by a single endpoint This means that you don t need to worry about maintaining multiple endpoints for different data types or versions of your API is extensible You can add your own types and fields to the GraphQL schema and query them just like any other data In other words the old REST model is like ordering pizza from multiple shops each with their own phone number This can be time consuming and frustrating especially if you change your mind about the toppings halfway through With GraphQL it s like ordering a pizza from one shop You tell them what toppings you want and they ll get you the pizza with the toppings you want If you change your mind you can just ask for different toppings No need to start from scratch The Basics in three wordsIt lets the client specify exactly what data it needs It makes it easier to aggregate data from multiple sources It uses a type system to describe data More technical terms Three main compements Schema queries and resolver Queries A query is the request the client makes Query fields can point to arrays and support arguments A typical querie in Qraphql look likes this query object table ResolverResolvers are responsible for fetching the data for a specific field Without a resolver the GraphQL server would not know what to do with the data corresponding to a field By decoupling the API schema and the database schema GraphQL allows you to use the former to modify the contents of the latter Query post root args return Posts find id args id Resolver can also be used to modify data in which case they re known as mutation resolvers mutation createUser userName user userName SchemaA schema is a blueprint for a GraphQL API It defines the types of data that can be fetched from the API and how that data can be mutate GraphQL is not as popular as REST but it is more efficient than REST and it is growing in popularity GraphQL is a good choice for modern development and it is worth learning I will publish next week a new article about API security and graphQL See you next week |

your systems reliable I urge you to check this excellent page from Gremlin Chaos testing is a subset of chaos engineering Think of performance testing as a subset of performance engineering Gremlin Integration with LoadRunner Professional To integrate Gremlin with LoadRunner Professional following are the prerequisites required LoadRunner Professional Gremlin account which is free Sample applicationServer with Gremlin installed To demonstrate the integration let us use an EC instance on AWS with nginx installed on your favorite Linux distro nginx on ECLogin to your AWS console and spin up an instance In this example let us use Ubuntu Once the instance is spanned up SSH into it to install nginx and Gremlin sudo apt update y sudo apt install nginx yLaunch http lt ec ip address gt to view the nginx home page If you do not see the nginx home page as below please validate the security groups nginx demo appSecurity GroupGremlin Installation StepsThe next step is to download and install Gremlin on the Linux box Login to your Gremlin account On the home page you can find the steps to follow After successful installation let us configure the Gremlin Control Plan using the Team ID and Secret Key Enter the below command and hit enter to copy the Team ID and Secret Key gremlin initTo grab the Team ID go to your Company gt Team gt Configuration To grab a Secret Key check your EC instance enter top command to monitor the CPU utilization Creating chaos experiments is a blend of art and science myself Experiment ObjectiveThe above experiment will validate the response time of nginx server for vusers under the high CPU utilization Click on the Run button to get started and monitor the graphs in the Controller Before the CPU AttackDuring the CPU AttackCPU AttackAfter the CPU AttackAfter CPU AttackHere is the complete graph of our test where I highlighted the response time during the CPU attack There is a slight elevation in the response time graph during high CPU utilization After the attack the response time trend reverted Response Time Vs TimeCongratulations You have successfully executed a chaos experiment using Gremlin in LoadRunner Professional After the experiment make sure you terminate the instance on AWS otherwise it will accrue charges ConclusionThough it is a tech preview the positive scenarios are working fine without any issues Using the free tier in Gremlin you can perform various experiments Based on your requirement you can define the blast radius and break things on purpose in a controlled manner on production Integration with Introducing Eventarc triggers for WorkflowsWe re happy to announce that you can now create Eventarc triggers to directly target Workflows destinations Available as a preview feature it simplifies event driven orchestrations by enabling you to route Eventarc events to Workflows without having an intermediary service Integrating Eventarc and WorkflowsIn a previous post we talked about how to integrate Eventarc and Workflows Since there was no direct integration between the two services we had to deploy an intermediary Cloud Run service to receive events from Eventarc and then use the Workflows API to kick off a Workflows execution Let s take a look at a concrete example on how this worked Image processing pipeline before Before the Workflows destination feature was available I designed an image processing pipeline code In this pipeline users save images into a Cloud Storage bucket This triggers a Cloud Storage event to a Cloud Run service via an Eventarc trigger The Filter service checks if the image is safe and initiates an image processing workflow with the Workflows API The image processing workflow calls three Cloud Functions Labeler to extract labels from an image Resizer to resize the image to x and Watermarker to add a watermark of the top three labels on the resized image In the end the resized and labeled image is saved to the output bucket This worked as an event driven orchestration but it wasn t ideal The Filter service not only filters images but it also kicks off the execution of the workflow We needed this Cloud Run service because there was no direct integration between Eventarc and Workflows The code was unnecessarily complex and not robust as a result for example there is no error handling or retry if the workflow does not succeed The Filter service is a Cloud Run service while the other services are Cloud Functions I love Cloud Run but I very much prefer the simplicity of Cloud Functions and I d rather not worry about containers at all In this iteration of the application Eventarc could only route events to Cloud Run services so we needed to have this extra service type instead of relying on a simpler Cloud Function Image processing pipeline after When the Workflows destination feature became available I rewrote the application to take advantage of it code The resulting architecture is simpler and more uniform There s no need for a separate Cloud Run service to trigger the workflow Eventarc now routes Cloud Storage events directly to Workflows The Filter service is now a simple Cloud Function with the only one job filtering incoming images The Filter service is now part of the overall orchestration with the same error and retry policies In this setup you simply create an Eventarc trigger with the right Cloud Storage event and the workflow destination code block StructValue u code u gcloud eventarc triggers create TRIGGER NAME r n location REGION r n destination workflow WORKFLOW NAME r n destination workflow location REGION r n event filters type google cloud storage object v finalized r n event filters bucket BUCKET r n service account PROJECT NUMBER compute developer gserviceaccount com u language u You can also create the trigger from Google Cloud Console Notice the new Workflows event destination In the workflow you receive a CloudEvent as a runtime parameter from Eventarc and extract the bucket and file information from the event code block StructValue u code u main r n params event r n steps r n log event r n call sys log r n args r n text event r n severity INFO r n extract bucket and file r n assign r n bucket event data bucket r n file event data name u language u The rest of the workflow tasks make calls to the Cloud Functions with the right inputs and capture outputs The workflow yaml file and detailed set up instructions are here For documentation and more Eventarc and Workflows integration examples check out the following resources Create a trigger for WorkflowsEventarc AuditLog BigQuery and WorkflowsEventarc Cloud Storage and WorkflowsEventarc Pub Sub and WorkflowsAs always feel free to reach out to me on Twitter meteatamel with questions or feedback Related ArticleIntegrating Eventarc and WorkflowsLearn to implement hybrid architectures that combine choreography and orchestration through Eventarc and Workflows integration Read Article |
