How to Design an Attractive GitHub Profile Readme… |
https://dev.to/thepiyushmalhotra/how-to-design-an-attractive-github-profile-readme-1ppg
|
How to Design an Attractive GitHub Profile Readme…After shuffling through a lot of ideas about what should be my next blog post I decided to go with a fairly simple one this time How to create a visually appealing GitHub Profile Readme You all knew this was coming right Some of you might be thinking “Ugh great yet another blog on how to make an impressive GitHub profile Well…yes But just because something already exists doesn t mean that you cannot create your unique version of it Most people do make their profile readme s interesting but what s the difference between profiles that look good and the ones that are aesthetically pleasing So here we are I am going to show you guys how to design a stellar GitHub Profile Readme and I m going to use my profile as an example I ll mention all the resources that I used for my profile and how you can customize it according to your style But before we get into the design and styling of the profile many of you may ask “What s the reason for doing this and “Is it necessary To that I would say it s not necessary to style your profile and make it unique There is no major downside to not creating a readme profile but there are definitely a lot of upsides to it Everyone used GitHub as a dumping ground for their projects just using it simply for what it was designed which is source control and collaborating with others on a project or contributing towards open source But in when GitHub released this new feature of creating our very own unique readme profile it provided a way for developers and artists alike to showcase their work professionally in the form of a “personal resume on GitHub That s all it is a special repo that acts as a visually impressive portfolio for other developers and employers to check out So read on for some incredible tips on styling your GitHub Profile The Very First Steps To start designing your GitHub profile we first have to create a new public repository Click the “ icon at the top right and choose “New Repository After that comes the critical step make sure that the name of the repo is the same as your username Refer to the example below GitHub will let you know that you have found a special repo whose README md file can be customized We want to keep this repo “public so that it can be displayed on your GitHub profile You can provide a brief description of the repository e g “My GitHub Profile though this step is optional After that tick the checkbox “Add a README file and click on “Create repository Going ahead we will alter this README file and personalize it A Unique Header ️Your profile s header is the first thing that people will observe so it must stand out from the other profiles We want that initial “hook that attracts the viewer And for that to happen my suggestion would be to avoid following the common design norms For example many developers use this layout for their “About section Hi there My name is Pronouns I m currently working on I m currently learning I m looking to collaborate on I m looking for help with Ask me about How to reach me ️I love Fun fact It s completely fine to use this template though as long as you change other aspects of your profile I went in another direction for creating the header and then added the “About Me section after that I ll guide you along the way with the resources I used for that The very first thing that you can see is that animated header with the text “Hey Everyone I used the capsule render GitHub repo for this one I came across this great resource while I was searching for ways to decorate your GitHub repo You can add background images and text on top of them and also who doesn t love animations It s super simple to use and has been well documented on the Repo Here is my configuration of the render lt p align center gt lt img src Everyone ️ amp animation fadeIn amp type waving amp color gradient amp height gt lt p gt After inserting a simple heading to provide links to my various accounts like LinkedIn Medium Dev to and also my portfolio website I wanted a minimalistic and textless way to do it So I decided to use icons There are many online tools available that provide thousands of free icons to use I used IconFinder and personally loved it There are many other popular options available that you can use like Shields io markdown badges vector logo zone simple icons etc The png source of the icon just needs to be imported into the lt img gt tag as shown below lt a href gt lt img height src gt lt a gt Now comes the fun part adding that glorious GIF GIFS make our profile more dynamic and eye catching Honestly you can put up any GIF you want It can be a popular meme a programming gif an iconic scene from a movie or a tv show or something that tells people a little bit about your hobbies In my case it s anime so that s what I went with Popular gif sharing websites like Giphy and Tenor can be used to pull any gif you like and it works the same way as adding the icons just copy the image address and paste it inside the “src attribute of the lt img gt tag The “About Me Section This is the section that I was talking about earlier where most developers use the template shown above If you want to make your profile stand out then I would suggest changing the design aspects of this section as well I went ahead and used YAML format while editing the readme so that the information reads like code when you preview the profile It adds a touch of professionalism and also as a bonus looks neat To display this format just wrap your text as shown below and you ll be good to go Tools and Tech Stuff In this section you can showcase your skills and list the tools and technologies that you re familiar with I always prefer minimal and crisp design choices over cluttered data so I went ahead with icons this time as well Us humans prefer information through visual mediums much more than anything else right You can use all of the stuff that I mentioned above in step like IconFinder Shields io markdown badges vector logo zone simple icons etc But for this section I would personally recommend DevIcon Unlike other resources DevIcon is built for providing the icons solely related to programming languages and development tools which makes it a perfect fit Just copy the SVG image source from DevIcon s website and paste it inside a lt p gt tag to show multiple icons lt h gt amp nbsp Some Tools I Have Used and Learned lt h gt lt p align left gt lt img src alt vscode width height gt lt img src alt bash width height gt lt img src alt php width height gt lt p gt Your GitHub History Finally at the end of your Profile README you can practically include anything Some developers put up what s currently playing on their Spotify profile some add their GitHub stats or some add a fun little snake game on your GitHub contribution graph like me which I ll show you guys how to put up I begin with two GitHub ReadMe Stat Cards One shows my total number of stars commits and pull requests etc And the other one displays my most used Programming languages in percentages You guys can get these cards from the popular GitHub ReadMe Stats Repo and the best part about these is that they are fully customizable with different settings and themes Next up is probably my favorite thing out of all of my profile elements Making a Snake Game out of your GitHub Contribution Graph It s fairly easy to set up and looks extremely satisfying when the snake gobbles up your commit graph To set it up for your profile we are going to use something called GitHub Actions GitHub Actions are CI CD tools in GitHub where you can initiate workflows that automatically run deploy and build your stuff Snake animation The first step is to copy this line above and add it to your profile s README Make sure to change the username to yours instead of mine Now we need to create a GitHub workflow so that the contribution graph in the snake animation will get updated according to the cronjob that we will set up Go to your “Actions tab in your README repository and create a New Workflow This will generate a new folder in your repository called “ github workflows and after that it will make a new file inside of it called “main yml Delete everything inside of the newly created main yml file and add this code to it below name Generate Datason schedule execute every hours cron workflow dispatch jobs build name Jobs to update datas runs on ubuntu latest steps Snake Animation uses Platane snk master id snake gifwith github user name thepiyushmalhotra svg out path dist github contribution grid snake svg uses crazy max ghaction github pages v with target branch output build dir dist env GITHUB TOKEN secrets GITHUB TOKEN Make sure to replace my username with yours We use a cronjob here that updates every hours so whenever you have a new commit it s going to get added to your snake animation The final step is to go back to your “Actions page of your README file click the newly created workflow “Generate Datas or any name that you give it and click the “Run Workflow button Et voila Your Snake GitHub Contribution Graph is active now Enjoy watching that snake eat up your hard work To wrap it all up I just added another capsule render animation at the footer which looked nice to me as you can see in the GIF above I ve also mentioned some extra collated list of resources for your individual design needs Awesome GitHub Profile Readme ーA list of amazing Readmes from many talented developers GitHub Readme Generator ーAn easy way to quickly generate a basic design template for your profile Read up more on GitHub Actions if you re interested in automation Generate various GitHub metrics that can be embedded anywhere If you want a quick and simple way to create cronjobs and learn more about them then Crontab Guru is a pretty good resource and you get to know the exact time that your workflow will run And that was it for my GitHub Profile Design Hope you guys liked this blog post on how to design an attractive GitHub Profile Readme that s aesthetically pleasing as well as functional Let me know if I can make some additions or changes to this article or if I missed some other fun stuff on GitHub I do plan to add a blog post workflow as well which can show your latest blog posts from Dev to but I ll leave that for another Can You Resolve Merge Conflicts Before They Happen? 💥 |

|
Can You Resolve Merge Conflicts Before They Happen Solving merge conflicts is fun said no one ever Nobody likes them but it doesn t change the fact that they are well part of the job In this short post I would like to briefly explain where they come from show how to solve them and as an added bonus suggest a solution to potentially avoid them in the first place Merge conflicts what are they A merge conflict is an event that occurs when Git is unable to automatically resolve differences in code between two commits They can happen as a result of merging branches during a rebase or when you re cherry picking in Git The good news is that Git is quite good at figuring out how to integrate changes so most of the time you re safe The hard part begins when the exact same line has been modified and Git can t decide which version is correct It will notify you about it in the terminal and hold you responsible for fixing it Solving merge conflicts the normal wayOk so how do we resolve conflicts We can either solve them manually or use a Git GUI such as the ones built into VS Code or Jetbrains IDEs or a separate desktop application like Tower or Sourcetree Let s look at solving conflicts manually The conflicting changes are easy to spot as they will be marked in a file by lt lt lt lt lt lt lt and gt gt gt gt gt gt gt The part before is your version of the conflicting lines and the part after is their version Delete the lines you don t want including the conflict markers and keep those that are correct Early merge conflict detectionMerging conflicts are not as scary as they seem but the truth is that solving them can be a long and tedious process especially on big projects That is where GitLive comes in handy a powerful tool that will warn you inside your IDE the moment you make a change in the editor that conflicts with a change on any other branch The warnings show you potential conflicts and give you the chance to solve them before the merge conflict occurs Starting with GitLiveInstall the latest GitLive VS Code extension or JetBrains plugin to get started When you open a file you ll see the change indicators in the gutter of your editor that shows you where your teammates have made changes compared to your version of the file These update in real time as you and your teammates are editing If you ve made a conflicting change you will see the bright red conflict indicator These conflicts can be uncommitted local changes you have not pushed yet or existing changes on your branch that conflict with your teammates changes In JetBrains click on the author s avatar or you can rollover the affected lines in VS Code to inspect a change and see the diff what branch they re from and even cherry pick changes straight into your local file That s it hope you ll find my mini guide on how to deal with merge conflicts useful and next time you encounter a merge conflict you won t panic Let me know what you think in the comments |

Netflix x s live action x Resident Evil x trailer shows a zombie apocalypse obviouslyA live action Resident Evil series is coming to Netflix this summer and a teaser offers a first look at what s in store The story takes place across two timelines and locations a seemingly pristine New Raccoon City in the present day and a ruined version of London in In we see Albert Wesker Lance Reddick bringing his daughters Jade and Billie to New Raccoon City Albert works for the Umbrella Corporation which unleashes the devastating T virus on humanity Fast forward years and Jade is one of the last million or so people on Earth She tries to survive the zombie apocalypse while reckoning with her family s dark secrets The show will build on existing lore from the Resident Evil games but will have an original narrative The teaser makes it pretty clear this is primarily a horror series with some action weaved in There are nods to the games as well including a quick flash of a zombie dog at the end This show follows on from the anime Resident Evil Infinite Darkness which hit Netflix last year The first eight episode season of Resident Evil will arrive on July th |

Sony WH-1000XM5 review: In a league of their own |
https://www.engadget.com/sony-wh-1000xm5-review-160045478.html?src=rss
|
Sony WH XM review In a league of their ownThe rumors were mostly true Sony did indeed have a follow up to its stellar WH XM ready for a proper debut Today the company announced the WH XM its latest flagship noise canceling headphones equipped with all of the things we ve come to expect from Sony s X line This time around the company gave its premium cans a big exterior redesign In the process it massively increased comfort while also expanding the incredible performance in terms of noise cancelation and overall sound quality DesignOne of the biggest changes for the XM is the design Sony slimmed down the headband while keeping the underside soft and cushiony My only gripe with the new look is that you can see where the housing for the adjustable arms ends and the softer padding begins You only see it when you take the headphones off but it s noticeable Sony also connects the headband to the ear cups in one spot on the M rather than the U shaped bracket that mounted to the M in two places There s still plenty of swivel and rotation for the ear cups so there s no sacrifice to movement In fact I d argue these changes give this new X a more modern look than all of the previous models The lineup has a similar design up through the M so Sony was overdue for a big overhaul Despite only being four grams or ounces lighter than the WH XM this new version feels like it weighs a lot less when you put them on The weight distribution is better plus the synthetic leather ear cups are quite cushiony I had no problem wearing these for hours at a time and at no point did I feel pressure around my ears or on the top of my head Billy Steele EngadgetThe outside panel of the right ear cup still houses the touch controls Here you can play pause with a double tap skip tracks with a horizontal swipe or swipe vertically to adjust volume Tap and hold summons your voice assistant and when you get a call simply double tap to answer All of those touch controls work well too reliably accepting taps and swipes without error On the edge of the left ear cup there are physical buttons for power and noise cancellation The former can also put the headphones in pairing mode and give you a battery level update while the latter cycles through a combination of ANC ambient sound and off SoftwareAs is the case with most of Sony s earbuds and headphones the Headphones Connect app is where you tweak settings and enable a host features When you fire up the software a battery life percentage is prominently displayed on the right side with tabs for Status Sound System and Services just below The first Status gives you access to the finer details of Adaptive Sound Control or Sony s handy automatic switching of noise canceling settings based on activity or location Of course if you choose to have things change based on where you are you ll have to give the app permission to track your whereabouts If you do you can set the M to automatically enable ambient sound when you re at the office for example Adaptive Sound Control can also be configured to change the EQ and enable disable Speak to Chat for a particular location or activity Billy Steele EngadgetThe Status panel will also allow you to see which devices are currently connected since the M allows you to link up to two simultaneously And lastly there s a media player here which I ve never touched across several reviews The Sound tab gives you access to Ambient Sound Control the ability to enable disable Speak to Chat the equalizer and audio presets If you recall Speak to Chat automatically pauses the audio and activates ambient sound when it detects that you re speaking In my experience it could sometimes be fooled by coughs but that s not the case anymore You can also configure the headphones for Reality audio in addition to switching Bluetooth connection quality and employing DSEE Extreme That latter uses AI to reproduce the frequency response that s typically lost to compression System is where you can enable multipoint connectivity change voice assistants disable the touch control panel and add functionality to the noise canceling button You can also opt for that last control to activate Spotify Tap with either a double or triple press And last but not least Services is where you connect various apps for easy access If you want to use Spotify Tap for example you ll need to sync it with Headphones Connect here Sound qualityBilly Steele EngadgetSound quality has never been an issue with the X line and it s definitely not on the M In fact it s yet another thing Sony upgraded on these headphones New mm carbon fiber drivers handle the audio including tracks in LDAC and DSEE Extreme I thought the M was well tuned for a range of genres but the bass seems punchier here Whether it s the electronic collisions of The Glitch Mob the grungy blues of Jack White or the driving bass in Kendrick Lamar s catalog the lower range is both pleasant and powerful expanding the overall soundstage The difference between the M and the M is in the finer details There s more depth making everything seem more immersive But there s also more clarity so the subtleties can shine I m talking about things like the texture of someone strumming an acoustic guitar or Jack White s iconic distortion soaring above the other instruments Everything is still balanced and the bass only provides the proper amount of oomph Switch over to something entirely acoustic like bluegrass and the bass remains in check so the picking and the highs can cut through unhindered What s more activating DSEE Extreme doesn t make a huge difference in the sound quality On other Sony devices that algorithm s ability to recover some of the detail lost to compression makes a noticeable impact On the M the results are subtle and on some songs I had a hard time picking up on any change at all It s quite impressive I only have one complaint about sound quality and it may actually be a Bluetooth issue rather than a true audio problem When listening to music or watching a video on my MacBook Pro I would occasionally experience quick dropouts or skips It didn t happen often and oddly I never heard it when playing something on my iPhone The audio stutters a bit just for a second like you re watching a video on a bad internet connection and then it continues I tested both WH XM units sent to me and noticed the issue on both I ve reached out to Sony for more info on the potential cause Active noise cancellationSony had already developed highly effective noise cancellation for its X line and automated it so the feature could change based on your activity or location Adaptive Sound Control Those automatic tweaks are still in play on the M but the company has taken its overall noise blocking setup a step further First it doubled both the number of processors and the number of microphones that handle noise canceling duties In addition to the QN that was inside the M Sony also employs a separate V chip to lend a hand There are now eight total ANC mics up from four on the previous model Plus there s an automatic noise canceling optimizer that ensures peak performance based on wear and your environment So what does all of that mean when you re actually wearing the headphones Well Sony says the entire setup is much better at blocking higher frequencies than the WH XM which covers things like human voices Indeed the M is more effective at silencing nearby chatter and TV noise It s not entirely effective at combating baby screams I have a month old at home but most speech and what I d consider a normal television volume went unnoticed That makes the ANC on the XM a clear upgrade over the M Call qualityDespite working just fine for calls the WH XM isn t equipped with dedicated voice microphones Sony installed four beamforming mics on the M which it says helps this new model deliver the best call quality yet for the X series Those components work alongside AI driven noise reduction to make this happen Companies make lofty claims about voice quality all the time and it rarely pans out but Sony actually delivers Both video and audio calls are crisp and clear as your voice sounds noticeably better than other earbuds and headphones With most of the competition you typically sound like you re on speakerphone at best It s much better than that on the M and the headphones do a great job handling background noise too Constant roaring from a sound machine is easily silenced and things like voices music or a nearby television are also reduced Battery lifeBilly Steele EngadgetUnfortunately one rumor that didn t pan out is the XM s battery life Reports indicated that Sony had added another hours on top of its already hour listening time That s not the case you ll still only get hours of use with active noise cancellation Sony did upgrade things when it comes to the quick charge feature Instead of minutes for five hours of use like on the M you get three hours of playback in three minutes After just over hours of testing Sony s app read percent battery remaining so I m pacing slightly ahead of the promised figure The battery percentage in the macOS Bluetooth menu confirmed the status at that point too During my tests I had active noise cancellation turned on and did a mix of music streaming video live streams video calls and turning the headphones off a few times Even though more is always better hours is plenty on the M and it s enough to get you through a few work days or an international trip that includes long flights The competitionWhen it comes to alternatives Bose immediately comes to mind The company offers the pricey which does an excellent job blocking noise although the overall sound quality isn t as good as what Sony has conjured The is slightly cheaper at but if you re looking to save even more money the QuietComfort is a great choice Bose updated its classic QC headphones last year with improved ANC and longer battery life among other things Plus that model is Neither of these beat Sony when it comes to the complete package that is the XM but they re worthy alternatives nonetheless If you ve read this far and think the previous X model seems more compelling you re in luck Sony is keeping the WH XM around for the time being It will still be unless you find it on sale saving you over the cost of the brand new version Indeed those headphones have been our top pick since their debut And even though they re likely to be dethroned in our next buyers guide update they re still very good headphones and won t be obsolete anytime soon Wrap upBilly Steele EngadgetThe WH XM is evidence that even the best product in a given category still has room for improvement Sony has consistently impressed us with its X line but the upgrades it delivers on the M are some of the biggest in the history of the series It managed to make its sound even better while blocking more noise than it has before Plus there s a new look that isn t only an aesthetic improvement but is more comfortable too The only gripe is the price which is more than the previous model at But when considering the entirety of what you re getting the cost is perfectly reasonable Sony was already on top but with the WH XM the company put even more distance between itself and the rest of the pack The Sony WH XM will be available in black and silver color options for Pre orders begin today on the company s website Amazon and Best Buy and the headphones will be widely available on May th |
