海外TECH DEV Community Building an Open Source Blogging Platform with Appwrite and Hugo https://dev.to/appwrite/building-an-open-source-blogging-platform-with-appwrite-and-hugo-2hf7 Building an Open Source Blogging Platform with Appwrite and HugoHave you been in a situation where you think of starting your own blog Yes What stops you The thought of building a blogging site I have you covered with Appwrite and Hugo What is Hugo Hugo is a static site generator with tonnes of amazing themes to choose from you can also make your own themes You can setup Hugo and get it running in a single command brew install hugo choose the one for your OS To learn more about Hugo get started from here What is Appwrite Building a web mobile solution Need some help with the backend Appwrite to the rescue it is an open source solution containing all core APIs to build an application It helps you build secure apps faster Appwrite also handles authentication realtime databases file storage cloud functions and more with SDKs for web mobile and server side languages Read about some newly added goodness from here Now that you know what Hugo and Appwrite is you probably might have guessed what we are going to use it for Hugo will be our site generator while Appwrite handles the backend Let s get started building PrerequisitesHugo installedAppwrite installedIf the installations were successful You will have Appwrite running in localhost Go to your browser and enter http localhost auth signin if you get the sign in page you are all set Type the command hugo version if it returns the version you are good to proceed ApproachBy now you must have noticed that the content in Hugo is markdown Our aim is to store content in a database this is where we use Appwrite and use that to generate markdown files which gets listed in our blogging site 🪜Steps includedChoosing a Hugo theme and installing it Putting some content and running it on localhost to see how it worksMaking a project in AppwriteSetting up the Database adding collections to itFetching data from AppwriteConverting the data from Appwrite into markdown while Hugo is buildingVerifying if our content is being reflected in the site ️Getting startedYou can follow the Hugo quick start tutorial to get a site running in few minutes You can choose a different theme from here and download it using the command git clone themes Niello in your root directory Note I have used Niello for my site you can choose any This is how your folder will look after you have downloaded the theme of your choice Once you have signed in to Appwrite you create a project first by clicking on Create a project Give it a name and click Create For example From the left pane we choose Database which will contain our blog contents and click on Add a collection Once you have a collection created choose the permission level as Document level From the same page copy the Collection ID and keep it handy we will use this in the later steps A blog consists of two string attributes Title and Body so we go ahead and add attributes within our Database collection P S Choose New string attribute and enter the text Title in Attribute ID Repeat the same for Body Our next step is to fetch the data from Appwrite we use the code from Database API document We used the Collection ID that you have copied in the above step The code looks something like const sdk new Appwrite sdk setEndpoint https HOSTNAME OR IP v Your API Endpoint setProject dfacddc Your project ID let promise sdk database listDocuments COLLECTION ID promise then function response console log response Success function error console log error Failure Note Add some documents before running the above pile of codeWe have successfully fetched the data we now move to getting it converted to markdown and let Hugo build from it It is time to use your JavaScript skills In the same file where we fetched our collections data we write the following code let promise database listDocuments COLLECTION ID promise then function response console log response const template title title date date desc for let i i lt response documents length i const obj response documents i const tempObj title obj Title date new Date desc obj Body const op render template tempObj const opPath quickstart content posts obj Title split join md fs writeFileSync opPath op function error console log error Explaining the above block of code Putting the fetched data from Appwrite into the markdown template of HugoRunning a loop that puts the above markdown file in the path from where Hugo can build for this example the path is content posts The loop continues until all the documents from our Appwrite collection is uploadedThe entire code will be something like this const sdk require node appwrite const fs require fs const render require mustache Init SDKlet client new sdk Client let database new sdk Database client client setEndpoint APPWRITE ENDPOINT Your API Endpoint setProject APPWRITE PROJECT Your project ID setKey APPWRITE API Your secret API key let promise database listDocuments COLLECTION ID promise then function response console log response const template title title date date desc for let i i lt response documents length i const obj response documents i const tempObj title obj Title date new Date desc obj Body const op render template tempObj const opPath quickstart content posts obj Title split join md fs writeFileSync opPath op function error console log error Run your file once to make sure everything is working fine the type hugo server D and your site will be live in http localhost If you have followed till the end this is how your site will look 🪜Additional stepsYou can host your site with Netlify or GitHub pages or any other preferred servicesYou can use your own themes if you wish toThank you for reading hoping this could be of some help For any queries if you want to show me your cool projects tweet to me Haimantika 海外TECH DEV Community What Cypress E2E testing has taught us about our code https://dev.to/devteam/what-cypress-e2e-testing-has-taught-us-about-our-code-5aco What Cypress EE testing has taught us about our codeA little over a year ago Forem introduced End to End testing to the app using Cypress Since that time we ve definitely evolved our understanding of Cypress but we ve also learned a lot about our app too So much so that I wanted to share some of the things Cypress testing has taught us Some backgroundWe use Cypress alongside cypress rails and Cypress Testing Library Testing Library gives us a range of enhanced queries that help us focus on testing in a way that closely mirrors how users interact with the app Instead of targeting page elements with e g CSS selectors or IDs we lean towards finding elements by their role and accessible name When I talk about testing with Cypress at Forem I mean specifically testing with Cypress and Cypress Testing Library A greater awareness of accessibilityI ve made no secret of personally being a huge fan of Testing Library for the impact it can have on accessibility testing and awareness It therefore isn t a surprise to me that we have learned a lot about the accessibility of our app since introducing EE tests with Cypress Uniqueness of elementsOne of the challenges we ve had with testing some older views in Cypress is discovering that the same element name combination is present multiple times A great example of this is the Follow buttons throughout the app We tried to target a Follow button in test with cy findByRole button name Follow and found it incredibly difficult to target the one we wanted This immediately flagged itself up as an accessibility issue users of screen readers would hear every follow button announced as Follow but follow who Just as we were struggling to target the right button in test a screen reader user would struggle to target the button of the user they wanted to follow Big shout out to community member keshavbiswa for making improvements to the follow buttons accessible names after we discovered this The power of landmarksWe take advantage of Cypress scoping abilities by writing code like cy findByRole main within gt Everything in here is scoped to the main element only cy findByRole heading name Dashboard In the example above the within helper allows us to scope the test to all the HTML inside the main landmark This can be really handy and powerful For example when we wanted to test the main feed navigation we could do cy findByRole navigation name View posts by within gt cy findByRole link name Relevant as relevant cy get relevant should have attr aria current page We were able to go directly to the feed navigation landmark with ease This is cool for testing but it s also been great for building awareness and understanding of how important landmarks and their labels can be for screen reader users Just like we could skip directly to the View posts by navigation in Cypress screen reader users can skip directly there with their screen reader too Great news for anyone that wants to get straight to the latest posts Headings headings headingsHeadings play an important role in accessibility I have an older post that digs into this a bit and they ve become really important to our tests too One struggle we had with Cypress was that sometimes when we followed a link to a new page the new page wouldn t have loaded yet before Cypress tried to click some button check for some behaviour For example we had some test code cy findByRole main findByRole link name Test article click After clicking the link we can sometimes accidentally get a reference to the main element on the page we just leftcy findByRole main findByRole button name Share post Cypress fails to find the Share post button inside the previous page s main element and the test failsSince a main existed on both the first and the second page Cypress would occasionally get a reference to the wrong one One way that we prevent this type of flake now is to make sure we look for an element that is unique to the new page before continuing our test steps The example above would become cy findByRole main findByRole link name Test article click Wait for the correct h elementcy findByRole heading name Test article level Now we can be sure the main below is the right one cy findByRole main findByRole button name Share post Needless to say this in turn has made us more aware of pages missing headings or headings with the wrong level duplicated etc All of which is helping us tighten up our accessibility Javascript races Aside from these accessibility concerns we ve also become very aware of some side effects of how we handle our Javascript We try our best to make sure our pages load quickly with Javascript asynchronously layered on after the first page load to enhance functionality In reality this means it takes some amount of time before some elements on the page are fully initialized and clickable For example when the logged out version of the home feed first becomes visible the author names don t yet have a click handler to trigger the appearance of the profile preview card we initialize this functionality after the page first loads As a human it s pretty hard to click the button before it s initialized largely because the page load is pretty fast but it s technically possible Certainly Cypress is speedy enough to do this sometimes We ve been working around this with a variety of solutions including using cypress pipe which lets us retry a click until a certain condition is met For example in the case of the feed preview cards we can do cy findByRole button name Admin McAdmin profile details pipe click should have attr aria expanded true This tells Cypress click this button until aria expanded is equal to true meaning the preview card has opened Don t worry it won t retry forever Cypress has a default waiting period for a condition to become true and pipe will only retry for that long It s definitely made us think a lot more about progressive enhancement and what is and isn t usable from the very first moment of page load Want to know more about EE testing at Forem We ve been adding to our EE testing docs as we learn and evolve our approach including the gotchas we ve found along the way feel free to check it out I d love to hear about your experiences with Cypress and Testing Library too 2022-05-18 16:24:40

海外TECH Engadget It's still really easy to game Facebook's algorithm https://www.engadget.com/meta-widely-viewed-content-spam-q1-2022-164527537.html?src=rss It x s still really easy to game Facebook x s algorithmMeta s accounting of the most popular content on Facebook continues to be a confusing mess to untangle The company released the latest version of its “widely viewed content report which details some of the most viewed Facebook posts in the United States And once again the latest report raises questions about the company s ability to limit the spread of what Meta euphemistically refers to as “lower quality posts Between January and March of this year six of the top most popular links on Facebook were from a spammy website that has since been banned by the company for inauthentic behavior “In this report there were pieces of content that have since been removed from Facebook for violating our policies of Inauthentic Behavior the company wrote in a blog post “The removed links were all from the same domain and links to that domain are no longer allowed on Facebook The links all came from a Vietnam based “news site called Naye News Unfortunately Facebook didn t share details about the actual URLs that went viral and were later removed so there s not much we can glean about the actual content What we do know is that Naye News which as Bloomberg reporter Davey Alba points out has never before appeared in a widely viewed content report was able to reach a vast number of Facebook users before the company banned it Links to Naye News appeared six times on the list of the top URLs including the two top spots Together these links got more than million views according to the report This website wasn t the only source of questionable content that made it into the top most viewed list The fourth most popular link on the list was a YouTube clip from a town hall meeting with Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson featuring a nurse making provablytly false claims about COVID treatments During a call with reporters head of Facebook Integrity Anna Stepanov said that links to the YouTube video were demoted in News Feed after it was debunked by fact checkers The company also added warning labels to discourage it from being reshared “Without these features this link would likely have received even more reach Stepanov said But even with those measures the link was still viewed more than million times on Facebook That s more than the number of views on the original YouTube video which currently has about million views Meanwhile another URL on the report which got million views is a link to a website called “heaveemotions com that now redirects to a website that appears to be meant to trick visitors into installing malware On Facebook though the link originally rendered a preview with meme style text that reads “They told me the virus is everywhere I told them so is God Can I get an Amen I Bet you won t repost Screenshot FacebookIt s not the first time overtly spammy content has appeared in one of these reports In the last version of this report the top Facebook Page was one later removed by the company for breaking its rules Reporter Ryan Broderick later identified the page s origins as a Sri Lankan content farm The reports which Meta began releasing in part to rebut data suggesting far right personalities consistently dominate the platform are one of the only windows the company offers into what s popular on Facebook That s been a key question for researchers trying to study the platform and how information and misinformation spreads across it But researchers have also raised questions about how Meta was compiling these reports which in the past have surfaced bizarre results Notably Meta now says it s changing the way it evaluates what content is the most “widely viewed on its platform Previous reports identifying the top links on Facebook were based on any public post that contained a URL even if the was just appended to the body of a text post This meant that popular Pages could effectively spam their followers with random links ーlike to a website representing former Green Bay Packers football players ーembedded in a text or photo post Researchers had widely criticized this approach as a widely distributed text post with a link at the end is a lot different than a link post in which the linked content is fully rendered as a preview Now Meta is reversing course “Moving forward links will need to render a preview in order to be counted as a view as that more accurately represents what people are seeing Even so these reports are still only a limited look at what s most popular on Facebook The company says the list of the top most viewed links ーthe list that included Naye News and COVID misinformation ー“collectively accounted for of all Feed content views in the US during Q But as always with Facebook its sheer size means that even a fraction of a percent can equate to millions of views At the very least these reports show that it s still relatively easy to game Facebook s algorithms and spread “low quality content 2022-05-18 16:45:27
