Google	Official Google Blog	Helping people impacted by the justice system	https://blog.google/outreach-initiatives/grow-with-google/justice-impacted-communities/	Helping people impacted by the justice systemOn a visit to Indiana Women s Prison in I joined a ceremony for graduates of The Last Mile an organization preparing people for successful reentry through business and technology training It was my first time attending a graduation inside and I listened and was inspired as each graduate shared their determination to succeed in spite of the many challenges they might face after release Each year people are released from prison only to be met with an unemployment rate that is five times the national average This rate is even higher for Black Latino and low income individuals who are disproportionately impacted by mass incarceration Devastatingly more than half of those released from US prisons don t land a job in the first year of returning home in part because they don t have the necessary digital skills to compete in an ever changing job market Since Google has supported many aspects of criminal justice reform with over million in grant funding and pro bono hours But there s more work to be done Today we re committing more than million in new funding that will support job seekers impacted by the justice system with digital skills training and automatic record clearance The Grow with Google Fund for Justice Impacted Communities will make more than million available for nonprofits to lead Grow with Google workshops and trainings Using a curriculum co curated with five justice reform focused partners our goal is to help people impacted by the justice system build career skills ranging from fundamental skills like finding and applying for jobs online making a resume using web based tools or building a professional brand to more advanced topics like using spreadsheets to budget for a business To accelerate jobs access for formerly incarcerated people Google org is providing a million grant and a full time team of Google org Fellows who will work pro bono to support Code for America Code for America works with community organizations and government to build digital tools and services change policies and improve programs Fellows will work alongside Code for America to help transform the process of automatically clearing criminal records creating a replicable model to better identify and expunge past records through CFA s Clear My Record initiative Google org is also granting million to the National Urban League and Justice through Code two organizations focused on providing skills training to formerly incarcerated job seekers beginning their careers in tech Three years after The Last Mile graduation I attended it was an honor to sit down with Molly a graduate who learned digital skills using Grow with Google s curriculum She is now employed as a Returned Citizen Advocate at The Last Mile Here s what Molly had to say about her involvement with the program When you started learning digital skills at The Last Mile where were you at in life I had just been released from Indiana Women s Prison and was on a mission to find a new career I was applying for multiple jobs while also looking for educational opportunities that would help build my skills and knowledge How comfortable were you with tech before and after you went inside I was incarcerated for three years When I went in I felt like I was very tech fluent but when I was released it seemed as though the entire tech world had changed There were new norms and even how email was done felt unfamiliar Different platforms and software were being used and I felt overwhelmed What was a highlight of the program The most important class that I took was a learning path called “Basic Digital Skills It helped me learn how to use documents and email efficiently This was reinforced by The Last Mile because we regularly use both of these when communicating and collaborating What s next for you Since participating I secured a job as a Returned Citizen Advocate at The Last Mile I went from using what I learned like how to write a resume cover letter apply for a job and interview to securing a role that allows me to help other members of the community I ve had the opportunity to pay it forward Alumni are encouraged to participate in the program once they are released from prison Because I have first hand experience with the program I can assist them with any questions and talk about the value and importance of each lesson or learning path from personal experience In the future I plan to continue to support people that are returning to society and to help people learn digital skills and expand their knowledge My passion is to help those coming after me to be able to create and build the best future for themselves that is possible	2022-06-01 17:30:00

encountered Financial accounts Companies need to validate the identity of individuals When creating a customer account you need to present a government issued ID for manual validation Transportation networks To handle subscriptions operators often manage fleets of custom identity like cards These cards are used for in person validation and they require an ID photo Identity gates When crossing a border or even when flying domestically you need to pass an identity check The main gates have streamlined processes and are generally well equipped to scale with the traffic On the contrary smaller gates along borders can have manual processes sometimes on the way in and the way out which can lead to long lines and delays Hotels When traveling abroad and checking in you often need to show your passport for a scan Sometimes you also need to fill out a longer paper form and write down the same data Customer benefits For benefit certificates or loyalty cards you generally have to provide personal info which can include a portrait photo In these examples the requested info including the portrait photo is already on your identity document Moreover an official authority has already validated it Checking or retrieving the data directly from this source of truth would not only make processes faster and more effective but also remove a lot of friction for end users Identity input is a file any format supported by the processor client is an API wrapper configured for processing to take place in the desired location process document calls the API process method which returns results in seconds The output is a structured Document You can collect the detected fields by parsing the document entities Note This function builds a mapping ready to be sent to a frontend A national ID dropping images from the client Note For documents with multiple pages you can use a PDF or TIFF container In this example the two uploaded PNG images are merged by the backend and processed as a TIFF file And this is the processing of a US driver license captured with a laptop p webcam Notes Did you notice that the webcam capture is skewed and the detected portrait image straight That s because Document AI automatically deskews the input at the page level Documents can even be upside down Some fields such as the dates are returned with their normalized values This can owned business initiativeIn June of Sundar Pichai outlined a number of commitments Google will make to racial equity starting with the Black community in the United States As part of this initiative we formed a team at Google Cloud to help black entrepreneurs accelerate the growth of their businesses with cloud technology  Racial equity is inextricably linked to economic opportunity According to McKinsey advancing racial equity would create new oppor­tunities for participation in the economy for underrepresented individuals resulting in significant benefits to businesses families and communities across the country Black owned financial institutions play a vital role in closing the racial wealth gap by providing greater access to financial products and services to historically underrepresented and underserved communities  That is why we decided to focus our initial efforts on empowering Black entrepreneurs and Black businesses in the financial services industry   Together with partners like Uncommon Impact Studio World Wide Technology and Zencore we aim to bring data technology and marketing capabilities that are uniquely Google to Black owned banks and fintechs By implementing cloud technologies seven Black owned financial institutions have been able to accelerate their digital transformation scale their business and connect their products and services to people that need them most  Let s dive a little deeper into a few companies that are part of the initiative   BetaBank Improving access to capital for small businesses BetaBank recently announced its FDIC application to become one of the first digitally native banks built from the ground up on Google Cloud BetaBank founder Seke Ballard recognized early that the financial lending system was broken and he identified technology as the key to removing bias from small business lending Ballard created an AI algorithm to weigh risk and calculate qualification of an SMB loan application with more accuracy speed and at a lower cost than traditional banks BetaBank s mission is to provide small business owners equitable access to financial services  Ballard and his team selected Google Cloud as the cloud infrastructure on which to build run and manage BetaBank Google Cloud will provide a scalable secure infrastructure to grow BetaBank s business and networks and the tools to support regulatory compliance fraud prevention and overall security  OneUnited Bank Delivering personalized customer experiences OneUnited Bank is one of the first and largest Black owned digital banks in the United States  OneUnited Bank worked with Google Cloud to implement Contact Center AI a Google Cloud platform that enables companies to leverage AI to transform the performance of its call centers The company also implemented Google Ads Search campaigns to connect with new customers We recognize that there are things we can do that will x this company and there are ways that Google can help us Jim Slocum CIO One UnitedOneUnited paired Contact Center AI with its existing technology and leveraged DialogFlow Google Cloud s conversational AI natural language understanding platform to create a more personalized customer experience and scale their contact center interactions   The success of the deployment was revelatory to OneUnited as to what cloud and AI technologies can do for them and their customers  First Independence Bank Modern infrastructure for better community lending First Independence Bank is the only Black owned bank headquartered in Michigan and has been serving the local community in Detroit for over years To ensure the bank could compete in the future its legacy systems needed a digital upgrade  In September First Independence Bank partnered with a digital lending platform for business banking to speed up its digital federal Paycheck Protection Program PPP loan application process as a convenience to its PPP loan applicants  As part of this partnership First Independence Bank has committed to migrate onto Google Cloud to create a more efficient lending process for customers Data Capital Management Harnessing the power of AIData Capital Management DCM is a digital investment research services and advisory firm whose CEO and Co Founder Michael Beal knew early on the power that artificial intelligence AI and machine learning ML can bring to the fund management industry  DCM worked closely with Google Cloud engineers to enhance its current offerings of DCM AI models “AI Traders that investors can leverage to manage their stock holdings and digital wallets Training AI models requires massive amounts of data and compute power As the firm s operations grew the opportunity to optimize performance with Google Cloud was a primary factor for the decision to migrate DCM s DCM ai investor portal and all supporting investment research execution and reporting features from their legacy provider to Google Cloud   What s next  Building on our commitment to increase racial equity through technology we are expanding this program beyond financial services to bring the full value of Google Cloud to other industries including education
