Environment Variables in Heroku PythonSo I was messing around with Heroku trying to find out how to add environment variables without using the CLI so setting the variables on the website and after an hour I figured out how to do it Now I want to spread my knowledge so anybody else who wants to know how to set and access environment variables in Heroku using Python can do it easily So first go to so you can see all the apps you have deployed It should look a bit like this Now click on the app you want to set the environment variables on It should show something like this Then click on settings which is on the right hand side of the navbar That should lead you to a page that looks like this Then click the button that shows Reveal Config Vars It should display something a page like this In the KEY input enter the name of the environment variable and in the VALUE input enter the value of the environment variable You are done with the website side of the problem Now go to your code To access your environment variables which you stored in Heroku in Python you only need to install the os module import osThen the function to access to the environment variables is os getenv key name replacing key name with the key name For example if you want to access the environment variable with the key name of Password you would do import ospasswordvalue os getenv Password You ve done it Now you can easily access environment variables in Heroku in Python |

Promises in javascript |
https://dev.to/digomic/promises-in-javascript-39ck
|
Promises in javascriptA Promise is an object that represents the result of an asynchronous computation That result may or may not be ready yet and the Promise API is intentionally vague about this there is no way to synchronously get the value of a Promise you can only ask the Promise to call a callback function when the value is ready Promises are just a different way of working with callbacks However there are practical benefits to using them One real problem with callback based asynchronous programming is that it is common to end up with callbacks inside callbacks inside callbacks with lines of code so highly indented that it is difficult to read Another problem with callbacks is that they can make handling errors difficult If an asynchronous function throws an exception there is no way for that exception to propagate back to the initiator of the asynchronous operation Using PromisesWith the advent of Promises in the core JavaScript language web browsers have begun to implement Promise based APIs getJSON url then jsonData gt This is a callback function that will be asynchronously invoked with the parsed JSON value when it becomes available getJSON starts an asynchronous HTTP request for the URL you specify and then while that request is pending it returns a Promise object The Promise object defines a then instance method Instead of passing our callback function directly to getJSON we instead pass it to the then method When the HTTP response arrives the body of that response is parsed as JSON and the resulting parsed value is passed to the function that we passed to then You can think of the then method as a callback registration method like the addEventListener method used for registering event handlers in client side JavaScript If you call the then method of a Promise object multiple times each of the functions you specify will be called when the promised computation is complete It is also idiomatic to name functions that return Promises and functions that use the results of Promises with verbs and these idioms lead to code that is particularly easy to read Suppose you have a function like this to display a user profilefunction displayUserProfile profile implementation omitted Here s how you might use that function with a Promise Notice how this line of code reads almost like an English sentence getJSON api user profile then displayUserProfile Handling errors with PromisesAsynchronous operations particularly those that involve networking can typically fail in a number of ways and robust code has to be written to handle the errors that will inevitably occur getJSON api user profile then displayUserProfile handleProfileError A Promise represents the future result of an asynchronous computation that occurs after the Promise object is created Because the computation is performed after the Promise object is returned to us there is no way that the computation can traditionally return a value or throw an exception that we can catchThe functions that we pass to then provide alternatives When a synchronous computation completes normally it simply returns its result to its caller When a Promise based asynchronous computation completes normally it passes its result to the function that is the first argument to then In practice it is rare to see two functions passed to then There is a better and more idiomatic way of handling errors when working with Promises To understand it first consider what happens if getJSON completes normally but an error occurs in displayUserProfile That callback function is invoked asynchronously when getJSON returns so it is also asynchronous and cannot meaningfully throw an exception getJSON api user profile then displayUserProfile catch handleProfileError With this code a normal result from getJSON is still passed to displayUserProfile but any error in getJSON or in displayUserProfile including any exceptions thrown by displayUserProfile get passed to handleProfileError The catch method is just a shorthand for calling then with a null first argument and the specified error handler function as the second argument Chaining PromisesOne of the most important benefits of Promises is that they provide a natural way to express a sequence of asynchronous operations as a linear chain of then method invocations without having to nest each operation within the callback of the previous one fetch documentURL Make an HTTP request then response gt response json Ask for the JSON body of the response then document gt When we get the parsed JSON return render document display the document to the user then rendered gt When we get the rendered document cacheInDatabase rendered cache it in the local database catch error gt handle error Handle any errors that occurThis code illustrates how a chain of Promises can make it easy to express a sequence of asynchronous operations That promise is fulfilled when the HTTP response begins to arrive and the HTTP status and headers are available fetch api user profile then response gt When the promise resolves we have status and headers if response ok amp amp response headers get Content Type application json What can we do here We don t actually have the response body yet When the Promise returned by fetch is fulfilled it passes a Response object to the function you passed to its then method This response object gives you access to request status and headers and it also defines methods like text and json which give you access to the body of the response in text and JSON parsed forms respectively But although the initial Promise is fulfilled the body of the response may not yet have arrived So these text and json methods for accessing the body of the response themselves return Promises Here s a naive way of using fetch and the response json method to get the body of an HTTP response fetch api user profile then response gt response json then profile gt Ask for the JSON parsed body When the body of the response arrives it will be automatically parsed as JSON and passed to this function displayUserProfile profile This is a naive way to use Promises because we nested them like callbacks which defeats the purpose The preferred idiom is to use Promises in a sequential chain with code like this fetch api user profile then response gt return response json then profile gt displayUserProfile profile Resolving PromisesWhile explaining the URL fetching Promise chain with the list in the last section we talked about promises and But there is actually a fourth Promise object involved as well and this brings us to our important discussion of what it means for a Promise to be “resolved Remember that fetch returns a Promise object which when fulfilled passes a Response object to the callback function we register This Response object has text json and other methods to request the body of the HTTP response in various forms But since the body may not yet have arrived these methods must return Promise objects Let s rewrite the URL fetching code one more time in a verbose and nonidiomatic way that makes the callbacks and promises explicitfunction c response callback let p response json return p returns promise function c profile callback displayUserProfile profile let p fetch api user profile promise task let p p then c promise task let p p then c promise task Promises in ParallelWe ve spent a lot of time talking about Promise chains for sequentially running the asynchronous steps of a larger asynchronous operation Sometimes though we want to execute a number of asynchronous operations in parallel The function Promise all can do this Promise all takes an array of Promise objects as its input and returns a Promise The returned Promise will be rejected if any of the input Promises are rejected Otherwise it will be fulfilled with an array of the fulfillment values of each of the input Promises So for example if you want to fetch the text content of multiple URLs you could use code like this We start with an array of URLsconst urls zero or more URLs here And convert it to an array of Promise objectspromises urls map url gt fetch url then r gt r text Now get a Promise to run all those Promises in parallelPromise all promises then bodies gt do something with the array of strings catch e gt console error e Promise all is slightly more flexible than described before The input array can contain both Promise objects and non Promise values If an element of the array is not a Promise it is treated as if it is the value of an already fulfilled Promise and is simply copied unchanged into the output array promise resource |

Let's Make Flappy Bird In C# 🐤 |
https://dev.to/christinecdev/lets-make-flappy-bird-in-a-windows-form-app-using-c-488n
|
Let x s Make Flappy Bird In C Whenever I have to learn practice a programming language I always try and do it by making little games I don t know why but the tedious act of making a Student Management System each time I have to practice my programming skills feels redundant and sometimes it even gets a little boring even though it is crucial to make such systems to truly learn I would rather entertain myself whilst practicing the fundamentals via quick bursts of mini games And so my C Flappy Bird was born Today I m going to show you how to make Flappy Bird in C All you need is Visual Studio Installed and twenty minutes to spare yes it doesn t take long to make this You ll be done with this in no time I want to thank Moo ICT for the base assets for this game You can download the assets the bird obstacles and ground here Step One Creating The Game InterfaceOpen up your Visual Studio and create a new project For this to work you need to select a Windows Form App project using C Name this anything you want and click next x Next we need to add our componentson our Form Open up your Toolbox on the left and add the following objects x Labels x Picture Boxes I have added an image below showing you what I named my objects You can also go ahead and fill in the background for your form Your final form layout should look similar to this The final step to creating our form interface is to add a timer so drag that in from the Toolbox I named mine gameTimer and set the interval to and enabled it Also head over to the timer s properties and assign it a tick behavior I called it gameTimer Tick but thinking of it a better name would be gameStart Finally we need to set our event listeners We will do this via our KeyUpand KeyDownproperties which we will need to be able to move the bird up and down duh And with that our interface is done for now Fell free to change this around to what makes you feel comfortable Heck even swap out the bird with a fish Step Two Setting Up Our VariablesDouble click your form to open up your Form cs file mine is named Flappy cs becaused I renamed it Let s start by defining some public variables that we will use throughout namespace Flappy Bird public partial class Flappy Form public variables int obstacleSpeed movement of obstacles pipes int gravity movement of bird player int score player survival rate public Flappy InitializeComponent gameTimer Start function defining what will happen during game start private void gameTimer Tick object sender EventArgs e function for when the player pressed the up arrow key private void onKeyUp object sender KeyEventArgs e function for when the player releases the down arrow key private void onKeyDown object sender KeyEventArgs e Step Three Moving The BirdLet s get our event listener functions onKeyDown and onKeyUp out of the way We need to add onclick events to each to increase decrease our gravity value ie we need our bird to move You might have to play with this value later on to suit your game We also need to enable our gravity variables to change upon game timer start affects the birds margin according to the value of gravity birdPlayer Top gravity function defining what will happen during game start private void gameTimer Tick object sender EventArgs e function for when the player pressed the up arrow key private void onKeyUp object sender KeyEventArgs e the bird will be pushed up if e KeyCode Keys Up gravity function for when the player releases the down arrow key private void onKeyDown object sender KeyEventArgs e the bird will be pushed down if e KeyCode Keys Down gravity Step Four Moving The ObstaclesNow that we have the bird moving we can see that the obstacles disappear without respawning That s not really fun so let s get them moving spawning by seeing if they are out of bounds and repositioning them function defining what will happen during game start private void gameTimer Tick object sender EventArgs e affects the birds margin according to the value of gravity birdPlayer Top gravity will affect the obstacles margin so that it moves out of the screen area giving the illusion that the bird is moving forward obstacleBottom Left obstacleSpeed obstacleTop Left obstacleSpeed this will allow us to spawn the obstacles again and again when they are out of bounds if obstacleBottom Left lt obstacleBottom Left if obstacleTop Left lt obstacleTop Left function for when the player pressed the up arrow key private void onKeyUp object sender KeyEventArgs e the bird will be pushed up if e KeyCode Keys Up gravity function for when the player releases the down arrow key private void onKeyDown object sender KeyEventArgs e the bird will be pushed down if e KeyCode Keys Down gravity Step Four Setting The ScoreOkay we are almost there now all we need to do is up the score when the player successfully avoids each obstacle and then also implement a gameOver function that will end the game when the player collides with an obstacle We can also go ahead and make the game harder by increasing the speed once the score reaches a certain value function defining what will happen during game start private void gameTimer Tick object sender EventArgs e affects the birds margin according to the value of gravity birdPlayer Top gravity will affect the obstacles margin so that it moves out of the screen area giving the illusion that the bird is moving forward obstacleBottom Left obstacleSpeed obstacleTop Left obstacleSpeed we update the score throughout the game by casting our value as string scoreText Text score ToString this will allow us to spawn the obstacles again and again when they are out of bounds if obstacleBottom Left lt obstacleBottom Left the score increases if the pipe spawns since we haven t hit it score if obstacleTop Left lt obstacleTop Left the score increases if the pipe spawns since we haven t hit it score this will prevent our bird from falling off the screen if it goes beyond the bounds of our screen it is game over if birdPlayer Bounds IntersectsWith obstacleBottom Bounds birdPlayer Bounds IntersectsWith obstacleTop Bounds birdPlayer Bounds IntersectsWith ground Bounds birdPlayer Top lt if score gt score else gameOver this will increase the obstacle speed as the game runs to make it harder if score gt obstacleSpeed Putting It All Togethernamespace Flappy Bird public partial class Flappy Form public variables int obstacleSpeed movement of obstacles pipes int gravity movement of bird player int score player survival rate public Flappy InitializeComponent gameTimer Start function defining what will happen during game start private void gameTimer Tick object sender EventArgs e affects the birds margin according to the value of gravity birdPlayer Top gravity will affect the obstacles margin so that it moves out of the screen area giving the illusion that the bird is moving forward obstacleBottom Left obstacleSpeed obstacleTop Left obstacleSpeed we update the score function for when the player releases the down arrow key private void onKeyDown object sender KeyEventArgs e the bird will be pushed down if e KeyCode Keys Down gravity ConclusionI hope this helped I m no programming God but I seemed to be able to make a base for a good Flappy Bird game clone Maybe challenge yourself to clean up the code and add a menu system Check out the full project on my GitHub Until Next time |

Rust from the beginning, variables |

Rust from the beginning variablesTLDR this is the second part on Rust In this part we ll cover variables how to work with them change values and so on ResourcesWhat is Rust moduleCreate your first Rust programRust Docs Why variablesWe use variables to store a value that we want to use later Additionally having a variable a named reference we re able to better understand what s going on Here s an example let account balance println Your account balance account balance Imagine you didn t have account balance but referred to in your code you wouldn t know what is about Declare variablesTo declare a variable in Rust we need to give it a name and a value like so let name Chris Note how we start with the keyword let a name for the variable name and a value Chris Type is inferred by valueValues in Rust have a type and this type is decided at first assignment of a value to the variable In the below case name is of type string and age of type i an integer type let name Chris let age When a variable gets a type like this we call it as the type being inferred meaning that Rust observes what value it s being assigned and makes conclusions based on the assignment The type it s inferred is a default type So numbers lacking fraction becomes i bit integer whole numbers lacking decimals for example If you want to check what default data types here s some nice code you can use fn type of lt T gt amp T println std any type name lt T gt fn main let no let name Chris type of amp no type of amp name The above code will print i and string when run Variables are immutableVariable values can t be changed by default You might start assigning a value to a variable like so let account balance and then later you want to change it to say and attempt to write the following code account balance At this point you will get an error back that you can t do this because it s immutable You will see just how awesome the Rust compiler is by providing you not only with the error message but what to do about it as well let account balance first assignment to account balance help make this binding mutable mut account balance account balance cannot assign twice to immutable variableThe error message suggest we make this mutable Let s explain what that means in the next section Change variable valueVariables are immutable but there are ways to change them There are two major approaches to change their values make them mutable this involves using the keyword mut when declaring the variable By using mut the compiler is now ok with you changing the variable s value like so let mut account balance account balance shadowing what we do here is declare a variable later down in the code with the exact same name What happens is that the old variable is shadowed over by the name variable and can no longer be referenced to let account balance other code let account balance this version of account balance shadows the first declared version ConstantsSo far we ve been using the let keyword to declare variables Another way to declare variables is by using the const keyword const means something different than let though With const you declare a variable that should never change What you are saying in the code is that here s a variable that we don t expect to ever change like the value of PI or C for the speed of light To declare such a variable we can type like so const PI f Notice the usage of const and that we explicitly need to set a type f a bit floating point type In this case we choose f but the default would be f per below compiler recommendation Where you to skip the type you would get an error like so const PI help provide a type for the item PI f There s also another type of constant static but it s outside the scope of this article if you want to learn more about that one check the docs SummaryIn summary we ve learned about bit more on why variables how to declare them and assign different types of values to them Additionally we ve seen how variables are immutable but can be changed either by using mut keyword or shadowing declare a variable by the same name |
