organization s goals For example you can improve overall compliance or protect your brand more carefully You also need to prioritize the applications that need to be backed up first and how to test them Whether done manually in a cloud solution on premises software managed service providers or otherwise Inventory your web applicationYou probably don t have a clear idea of which application it depends on every day as your business is organized as you think it is possible In fact most organizations are running many malicious applications at a given point in time and are only aware of them when problems occur You can t maintain effective web application security without knowing exactly what applications your organization is using How many are there Where are you Performing such an inventory can be a daunting task and can be time consuming When running keep in mind the purpose of each application Many applications can be redundant or completely meaningless Prioritize your web applicationsAfter completing an inventory of your existing web applications prioritizing them is the next logical step You may doubt it now but your list will likely be very long If you don t prioritize which apps to focus on first you ll struggle to make meaningful progress Sort apps into three categories CriticalCritical applications are mainly those that are outward facing and contain customer information These are the apps that need to be dealt with first as they are most easily targeted and exploited by hackers SeriousSerious applications can be internal or external and may contain sensitive information NormalNormal apps are much less exposed but they should be put to further testing By categorizing your apps this way you can reserve more intensive testing for important apps and use less intensive testing for less important ones This allows you to make the best use of the company s resources and will help you progress faster Prioritize VulnerabilitiesWhen you go through the list of web applications before testing them you have to decide which vulnerabilities are worth removing and which are not too worrying Removing all vulnerabilities from all web applications is simply not possible or even worth your time Even after rating your apps by their importance it will take considerable time to test them all By limiting yourself to only checking for the most dangerous security holes you ll save a lot of time and get things done much faster When it comes to determining which security holes to focus on it really depends on the applications you re using Also keep in mind that as testing goes on you may find that you ve overlooked some issues Don t be afraid to pause testing so you can regroup and focus on additional security holes Finally remember that in the future this job will be much easier because you are starting over now and it won t be later Run applications that use as few privileges as possibleEven after all your web applications have been evaluated tested and removed for the most problematic security holes you are still not clear Each web application has specific privileges on the local computer and the remote computer These privileges can and should be adjusted to improve security For the vast majority of applications only system administrators have full access Most other users can get what they need with less permissive settings In the unlikely event that privileges are misaligned for an application and some users cannot access the functionality they need the problem can be resolved as it happens It is better to be too restrictive in this situation than to be too permissive Have protective measures in place in the interimEven if you run a small fairly simple organization it can take weeks or even months to go through the list of web applications and make the necessary changes During this time your business may be more vulnerable to attacks Therefore it is important to have other safeguards in place in the meantime to avoid major problems To do this you have several options Remove certain functions from certain applications If the feature makes the app more vulnerable it might be a good idea to remove said feature in the meantime Use a web application firewall WAF to protect from the most worrisome security holes Throughout existing web applications must be continuously monitored to ensure that they are not attacked by third parties If your business or website is hacked during this time identify the weakness and fix it before moving on to another job You should make it a habit to carefully document these vulnerabilities and how they are handled so that future events can be addressed appropriately Use cookies securelyAnother area that many organizations don t think about when discussing web application security best practices is the use of cookies Cookies are extremely convenient for businesses and users They allow users to be remembered by the websites they visit so future visits are faster and in many cases more personalized However cookies can also be manipulated by hackers to access protected areas While you certainly shouldn t stop using cookies indeed it would be a huge step backwards in many ways you should adjust your settings to minimize the risk of being hacked First do not use cookies to store sensitive or important information For example do not use cookies to remember a user s password This makes it very easy for hackers to gain unauthorized access You also need to be careful about setting the cookie expiration date Sure it s good to know that cookies are valid for users for several months but in reality all cookies pose a security risk Finally consider encrypting the information stored in the cookies you use Gratitude for perusing my Fast Pages with ReactPhoto by Kolleen Gladden on UnsplashI recently created the website for my book The Art of Micro Frontends For this page I took a rather conservative approach making a true single page i e landing page that should be as approachable and fast as possible without sacrificing developer experience Surely there are right now quite some frameworks and tools out there But I did not want to spent countless hours learning new stuff just to be blocked by some framework restrictions Instead I ve chosen an approach that in my opinion is quite convenient super fast and very lightweight The Tech StackI ve chosen to use react as library for writing reusable components In a nutshell for the page it allows me to have code like the following function Content return lt gt lt default Content This is very easy to write change and align As far as styling is concerned I ve installed styled components This allows me to have the CSS next to the component where it should be applied In a nutshell this makes writing reliable CSS very easy Also when I omit or even throw out components in the future their CSS won t be part of the output For instance the Grid component shown above is defined like const Grid styled div display grid grid column gap rem grid gap rem grid row gap rem media only screen and max width px grid template areas book buy outline author reviews TypeScript can also handle JSX quite well so there is no need for anything else to process the angle brackets Dev SetupFor the whole mechanism to work I use a custom build script The file src build importantly the collectStyles from styled components create the inline stylesheet we d like to use for this page The dev variable keeps a small refresh script that will only be part of the page during local development For running the build tsx file we use ts node By calling ts node src build tsx we can start the process A few other tools that are helpful for making this a great experience are LiveServer for reloading during development i e the script above already uses that Nodemon for detecting changes during development i e once we touch a file the ts node process should restart HttpServer for running a local webserver during development i e we need to serve the page from somewhere http server dist is good enough for us All these tools can be wired together via concurrently concurrently livereload dist http server dist nodemon So when a file changes we have nodemon detecting the change and restarting ts nodeThe output being placed in distlivereload detecting a change in dist and updating the parts that changedThe whole thing is served from http server The configuration for nodemon looks as follows watch src ext ts tsx json png jpg ignore src test tsx exec NODE ENV debug ts node src build tsx One last remark on the dev setup for getting the assets in a set of custom Node js module handlers is used function installExtension ext string require extensions ext module filename gt const content readFileSync filename const value createHash sha update content const hash value digest hex substring const name basename filename replace ext hash ext assets push content name module exports default name extensions forEach installExtension Each asset will be added to a collection of assets and copied over to the dist folder The asset is also represented as a module with a default export in Node js This way we can write code like import frontPng from assets front small png import frontWebp from assets front small webp without even thinking about it The assets are all properly hashed and handled by Node js No bundler required CI CDFor deploying the page I use GitHub actions That is quite convenient as the repository is hosted anyway on GitHub The whole workflow is placed in the github workflows node js yml file There are two important steps here Build prepare everythingPublish everything right branch is gh pages For the first step we use name Build Website run npm run build echo microfrontends art gt dist CNAME cp dist index html dist htmlwhich automatically prepares the custom domain using the special CNAME file All the output is placed in the dist folder This will be then pushed to the gh pages branch Likewise I decided to make a copy of index html with the html file This file will be served if a user goes to a page that is not there Such a mechanism is crucial for most SPAs in this case we d not really need it but it s better than the standard GitHub page The second step then pushes everything to the gh pages branch For this you can use the gh pages tool name Deploy Website run git remote set url origin https git GITHUB TOKEN github com GITHUB REPOSITORY git npx gh pages d dist u github actions bot lt support actions github com gt env GITHUB TOKEN secrets GITHUB TOKEN Importantly you need to specify the GITHUB TOKEN environment variable This way the command can actually push code Now that s everything for the pipeline the page can go live and be updated with every push that I make PerformanceSo how does this little page perform Turns out quite well You can go to web dev measure to check for yourself To get in each column also some tricks need to be applied For instance instead of just using something like an img tag you should use picture with multiple sources That was another reason why choosing react was quite good interface ImageProps source string fallback string alt string width number height number function getType file string return image file substring file lastIndexOf function Image source fallback alt width height ImageProps return lt picture gt lt source srcSet source type getType source gt lt source srcSet fallback type getType fallback gt lt img src fallback alt alt width width height height gt lt picture gt export default Image With this little component we can write code like lt Image source frontWebp fallback frontPng alt The Art of Micro Frontends Book Cover width height gt which will be applied just as mentioned Also quite importantly we specify the width and height of the image In theory we could also compute that on the fly when rendering but as the page only has images it really was not worth the effort ConclusionWriting simple sites does not need to be complicated You don t need to learn a lot of new stuff Actually what is there already will be sufficient most of the time The page I ve shown easily gets the best score and performance after all its the most minimal package delivered with for what it does the optimal dev experience The code for the page
