query execution plan In this article we ll examine how PostgreSQL s partition maintenance capabilities can further influence and simplify the architecture of your apps We ll again take the pizza chain app as an example whose database schema comes with the PizzaOrders table To remind you the table tracks the order s progress table data is explained in the first article Now pretend you need to separate the orders for the current previous and all other earlier months So you go ahead and partition the PizzaOrders by the OrderTime column As a result the original table gets split into three partitioned tables or partitions Orders the table keeps all the orders for the current month June Suppose that the customer facing microservices heavily use the data from this partition Order the table stores orders for the previous month May Assume internal microservices that facilitate short term planning regularly query this data in combination with the current month s data OrdersOthers the remaining historical data used by the BI tools for strategic planning Nice you can partition data by time and the database will ensure each microservice queries only the data it needs But wait the current and past months are not static notions Once the calendar page flips to July st July will become the current month But how do you reflect this change at the database level Let s talk about partition maintenance techniques Partition MaintenanceThe structure of your partitions might be dynamic Quite frequently you might want to remove partitions holding old data and add new partitions with the new data That s the case with our pizza chain And this maintenance task can be easily fulfilled at the database level with no code changes on the application side In PostgreSQL partitions are regular tables that you can query or alter directly So whenever necessary you can use standard DDL commands to CREATE ATTACH DETACH and DROP partitions Creating Original PartitionsFirst let s create Time msThis is the same query but PostgreSQL and not your application layer decides which partition keeps the data The execution plan shows that the query ran against the orders partition bypassing the others However this ability to work with partitioned tables directly is extremely useful when you need to change the structure of your partitions Now assume that tomorrow is July st You need to add a new partition that will keep the orders for that new current month July as well as introduce a few other changes Detaching Old PartitionsLet s first deal with partition orders that presently holds data for the “previous month May You do this because once July becomes the “current month June will become the “previous month according to the application logic First let s remove the May partition from the partitions structure using the DETACH command ALTER TABLE PizzaOrders DETACH PARTITION orders  Once you do this attempt to read all the records from the PizzaOrders table to confirm there are no records left for May SELECT FROM PizzaOrders id status ordertime yummy in my tummy delivering baking baking ordered   yummy in my tummy Don t get scared the data for May didn t evaporate logarithmic algorithm to find the nth Fibonacci number which was interesting and something from SICP that I d forgotten about Tory s code took about minutes though on my local machine here it was more like minutes That made me curious to think about what slows it down Tory went on to consider some optimizations and looked at using memoize to cache function results This is a simple improvement when using a naïve implementation as per the tree recursion section in SICP since it avoids recalculating the same values multiple times However the logarithmic algorithm only calculates each value once We can see this if we add println n to the top of Tory s fib function gt fib This only executed the fib function times with different arguments each time Consequently caching results won t change the performance at all Similarly executing fib will only execute fib times which tells us that the recursive calls to fib are not what takes time Looking inside the function we can see that all of the other operations are math with no loops at all let a b fib quot n c a b a d b b a a if even n c d d c d This is all just division via quot multiplication subtraction and addition These are typically fast operations so why is it slow The answer is based in the size of the numbers being calculated As we saw above the th Fibonacci number is digits long This grows rapidly and by the billionth number the size is hundreds of millions of digits long digits in fact This can t be calculated by standard number types and needs a type like Java s BigInteger type or Clojure s wrapper BigInt The math operations on these numbers are taking a long time so is there anything faster Unless we want to build out own math library then we should look for something that already exists This made me think of dc which is an arbitrary precision calculator that comes with most Unix based systems I seem to recall that this application was supposed to be fast How would it compare ShellsThe easiest way to try this would be to shell out of the JVM to execute the dc program then communicate via a pipe This is typically slow but if the fib function only gets called times and there are only a few functions in that function then this time will be negligible when compared to the time for the math operations My first thought was Well I know how to do that but it will be fiddly I m sure it will take too long And that was going to be that But after a minute I started thinking I haven t tried to call anything through a shell for a long time Maybe I can just try something simple First of all we want to see this operating on the command line It uses reverse polish notation which is a bit obtuse but it does usually make for easier programming The operations for dc can be provided in a script to execute via the e operation and the operations in the script here are Provide numbers to place on the stackProvide the operation This removes the top numbers from the stack adds them and places the result on the top of the stack The p operation which prints the value on the top of the stack dc e p Now we just need to execute it from Clojure We do this with the shell namespace and each element of the command line is provided as a separate string parameter require clojure java shell as shell shell sh dc e p The result of this is a structure containing stdout stderr as strings and the exit code exit out n err Everything is done with strings and the final character needs to be truncated but this is all tractable So an addition function for BigInt is reasonably short defn n a b let out out shell sh dc e str a b p bigint subs out dec count out I named it with n on the end since Clojure BigInt values are printed with a trailing N Trying it out gt n NBut why bother wrapping in a BigInt All the math operations are go over the pipe so the numbers have to be converted to strings anyway It makes sense to just leave them as strings Using the above we can generalize it to all of the required last s defn z n n Note that the test for ev is checking the ASCII value of the final digit which is even for all even digits We can use these in Tory s function by tweaking it slightly defn fibn n if z n let a b fibn quotn n c n a n n b a d n n b b n a a if ev n c d d n c d defn fibn n first fibn str n Since there are so many math operations in a row then this could all be turned into a single dc script but that is really taking us into dc programming which isn t the point here Instead we re just trying to leverage the simple math operations on large numbers Testing it looks promising gt map fibn range It takes a second which I d expect with so many calls through the shell but it works Output problemIn fact it works all the way up to when we get It turns out that dc only prints out numbers to a width of characters Any numbers wider than that will broken up into multiple lines with each line ending with a character We can flatten this back into a single line by using a string replacement require clojure java shell as shell require clojure string as str defn op o fn a b let out out shell sh dc e str a b o p flat str replace out n subs flat dec count flat ComparisonLooking at the billionth Fibonacci takes a long time so let s just compare the millionth number gt def result time fibn Elapsed time msecs gt def result time fib Elapsed time msecs gt result bigint result trueAt s compared to ms the dc backed version is nearly times slower There are calls to math operations per invocation of fibn and executes fibn times for a total of calls to the shell Shelling out like this along with the string processing involved in moving data across the pipe does take some time Overall it is taking a few seconds but this is inconsequential when seeing that the majority of the seconds are being taken up by dc doing the work Calling out a few of the later operations and running them directly in dc demonstrates that it just takes a long time when working with large numbers BigIntegerClojure s clojure lang BigInt class wraps the Java java math BigInteger class The main reason for this appears to be that small values will keep an equivalent long value cached for fast operations on small values I ve been looking at Java s BigInteger class recently considering how to implement the same functionality for ClojureScript so I have some sense of what it s trying to do I once saw an arbitrary precision math library manipulate numbers as strings of decimal digits This worked well intuitively since it means that operations like addition and multiplication can be performed using standard pencil and paper algorithms that are taught in school But the principal benefit is that numbers can be parsed from a string or written back out trivially However decimal digits are stored in bits but only represent bits of information That s only about storage efficiency By contrast Java s BigInteger stores large numbers in binary This stores bits of information per byte which is far denser The same pencil and paper algorithms also work on numbers stored this way but use symbols that range from rather than This is significantly faster to process which is a major advantage However parsing from and conversion back to a string are very expensive operations as these are conversions between binary and decimal For instance executing fib billion on my machine takes minutes to get the answer but converting that answer into a string takes minutes That s nearly times longer I suspect that parsing and printing are where dc is spending all of its time especially since this is happening times for each invocation of the fib function I should learn to write more complex dc operations so I can run the entire algorithm in it TakeawaysWhat was the outcome of all this Well I lost an evening of my life More seriously though it helped me solidify my usage of calling out to a shell from Clojure Not mentioned above I also tried using the spit function to emit the operations to files which I then passed to dc using the f flag This was useful for seeing what specific operations had been executed It also helped me gauge exactly where in the operation the function had reached This was what first alerted me to the fact that dc was taking a long time to execute basic operations As mentioned I expect that this was due to the parsing printing phases of each invocation I also learned a bit more about performance when it comes to parsing and printing large numbers Implementing this in JavaScript has bogged me down due to the sheer complexity of it and it s interesting to see that the computer is having as hard a time doing it as I am having in trying to write it I also had the opportunity to pull apart the logarithmic Fibonacci algorithm I had skimmed this in my last reading of SICP so I m glad that I ve taken the time to work through it now	2022-07-12 20:02:41

preview A fun useful and promising updateThe iOS public beta is here which means you can get a taste of Apple s upcoming mobile software before its stable release As we saw at WWDC in June the iPhone is slated to get a whole new lock screen edit and send options in iMessage improved dictation a Medication tracker new sharing features and more iOS is shaping up to be a beefier update than years past and you might understandably be itching to test it out As always I have to remind you that installing any beta software comes with risks Some of your favorite apps might stop working or worse your phone might be completely bricked If you re still set on running the beta please make sure to back up your data You can access the preview by enrolling on Apple s website which will push a download option to your phone s Software Update section Just as with the iOS public beta last year basically all the features announced at WWDC are ready for testing The only things missing would require developers to make some changes like integrating an API for the new live activity update box on the lock screen And the redesigned CarPlay won t be available until next year I can t get into every single change and will save my more complete evaluations for our full review when iOS is officially released ScreenshotsNew lock screens are a visual refreshOnce my phone restarted after installing the beta the change was obvious Instead of the clock and list of notifications my eyes had grown tired of there was a box at the bottom of the page telling me the software had updated The clock font was a thicker blockier style which I immediately wanted to change I long pressed the wallpaper but that brought up the page for me to enter my passcode I found a bug where I couldn t access the editor or switch pages until I set up Face ID Basically you can t tweak or change lock screens without logging into your phone but when you enter your passcode the system takes you straight to your home page bypassing the lock screen altogether Face ID allows your iPhone to stay on the page after having unlocked your phone Once I got into the Lock Screen creator I could choose from eight styles and two colors for the clock as well as add up to five widgets across two boxes at the top of the page I picked the weather air quality and UV index widgets and then added two more profiles with different wallpapers featuring my favorite photos you can also choose your preferred emoji people or color There s also options based on the weather or “Astronomy which uses your position to show where you are on a globe It can also display the moon or solar system Each page can be linked to a Focus mode though there must always be a default lock screen that isn t tied to anything Speaking of Apple also added Focus filters to let you have finer control over what you want to interact with in certain modes You can choose which tab groups appear in Safari with your Work profile and pick a different calendar to see when set to Play iOS also offers Allow and Silence lists when you re setting up your Focus modes and will provide suggestions around Lock Screen content that would be relevant to each profile ScreenshotsThe revamped Lock Screen also features a new “live activity box at the bottom The idea is that when you re following a sporting match or recording an interview for example you can stay updated without having to leave the app open Developers need to integrate the new API for this to work Right now it works with Spotify and Apple s timer app making it easy to pause or skip ahead in my music and cancel my countdowns Messages gets betterOne of the most useful changes coming with iOS is the ability to edit and unsend chats in iMessage For now this works best with people who are also using the public beta ーanyone on iOS will see a second message that says “Edited to followed by your new words Just like what people on Android used to see when iPhone users used emoji reactions on texts You ll have minutes after sending a message to access the options for “Undo Send or “Edit When you rescind a message by the way your friend will see an alert saying “ friend s name unsent a message Texts that had been updated have the word “Edited next to the read receipt below the bubble ScreenshotsApple also updated the dictation experience Now when you tap the microphone on the iPhone s keyboard the QWERTY setup stays in place instead of being taken over by a waveform animation A small tab with a microphone icon appears over the input field when you re not speaking so you know dictation is still enabled You can tap mistakes in the box and continue dictating to fix them which is similar to what Google did with its updated voice engine on the Pixel Unlike on Android though iOS doesn t allow you to speak commands like “Send or “Delete all This dictation interface didn t appear when I was typing in the App Store s search bar though so despite this being a systemwide feature it still appears to be missing in places Visual Lookup is the most funOf all the updates the iOS beta brings my favorite has to be in visual lookup Or as I prefer to call it the quicker sticker maker Basically you can long press a subject in any picture in the Photos app and copy it without the background and paste it somewhere else I was impressed with how accurately the system picked out subjects whether it was a coworker smizing against a blue sky or a model in a flowing dress in front of a building Sadly it doesn t work on things in the background ーI couldn t get it to highlight a dog behind its owner ScreenshotsWhen you paste your selection into a Message field it s automatically sent as a cutout with a transparent background ーi e a sticker But often the system would think I was trying to send a picture and add a black background which took away from the effect This is a known bug though so it shouldn t be happening by the time iOS is ready for its stable release Apple also added video support for Live Text which scans images for text and picks them out so you can interact with them This will work in the Photos app as well as anything that uses the iOS player which includes fullscreen videos from articles on the web Third party services with custom controls won t automatically support this but developers can integrate the ability if they wish Medications and health features still need workI was looking forward to seeing the new Medications feature in the Health app and satisfyingly it s straightforward and intuitive I easily found my daily pill and Apple offers US users the option to scan their packaging label The database is still somewhat sparse and I couldn t find the specific brand and dosage of Vitamin B that I take every day but I imagine as more people use this and plug their own pills in there will be more entries soon While it s helpful that you can choose frequency intervals like daily alternate days specific days of the week and more I wish there were a way to choose an end date You can set a specific day to start your meds but for short term situations like a course of antibiotics for example you ll have to manually delete the entry after you re done ScreenshotsThe most intriguing aspect of Medications is that if you enter substances that have risky interactions the system should flag it for you This isn t limited to drugs ーApple also prompts you to add whether you consume alcohol marijuana or tobacco Through this I found out that my birth control might increase the effects of marijuana and the Health app labeled this as a Moderate drug interaction I m allergic to a few different drugs including some major antibiotics and I ve listed this information in my medical ID in the Health app in case of an emergency When I added one of the antibiotics in Medications I wasn t alerted about it Granted the information in the medical ID is simply a list of words as opposed to a piece of data Apple can use to match against other information And I probably wouldn t encounter a situation where I m dispensed medication that contains something I m deathly allergic to But it would be nice to see Apple think about how to approach situations like this Concerns about medical privacy are at an all time high and I almost didn t want to list my birth control in Medications though I do feel that Apple s privacy policy is one of the better ones around Still if there was a way for this information to be hidden behind a passcode I would feel a bit better Sharing accessibility and a long list of other updatesI ve barely covered the list of changes iOS will bring but we ve covered what will have the biggest impact on your daily experience If you frequently collaborate with others the new Safari group tabs can be helpful I created a group and shared it with fellow deputy editor Nate Ingraham as we tested the new software I had the Engadget home page and Apple s iOS summary open and the next day he had added some other reference pages but he also noticed I had been looking up the cast of Ms Marvel Sharing photos with your friends and family is also easier if they re using iOS You can create a shared photo album and images added will be synced with all members Family Sharing has also been updated to make child accounts easier to set up and your kids can send you Screen Time requests through Messages and you can approve or decline from the chat too ScreenshotsI didn t have time to check out some of the other new features like the assistive Door Detection tool or Sound Recognition But I did try Live Captions which provides subtitles for audio playing through all apps on your phone Though Apple s version is occasionally inaccurate and slightly slow compared to Android I appreciate that I can tap the box on iOS and choose to pause Live Captions or tap the microphone icon to switch to transcribing sounds in my surroundings I can also minimize the Live Captions box on iOS leaving only a floating circle on the screen that stays out of the way till I need subtitles again Apple also added a new Safety Check tool that “allows you to disconnect from people apps and devices you no longer want to be connected to You can review the people and apps that have access to your location photos calendar or contacts and revoke permissions or choose nuclear options like “Emergency Reset or “Select All and Stop Sharing Changing these options requires you to sign in either with a passcode or by Face ID There s also a new Lockdown Mode that the company announced earlier this month which is “an extreme optional protection for those who “believe you may be personally targeted by a highly sophisticated cyberattack I ve been enjoying the iOS public beta and though I still hesitate to recommend installing beta software most people who aren t risk averse will enjoy the updates If you re worried about stability and losing your data you can always wait till the final release typically
