features building out user flows and optimizing conversion rates constitute the offense of many software companies All of these activities are directly tied to the goal of growing the business Defensive tasks encompass security operations and disaster recovery These tasks are designed to prevent loss and empower the offense An engineering team cannot run optimal code or move the business forward with a weak infrastructure In the software world this alliance is realized through the engineering and operations teams Some organizations refer to these as the profit center and cost center respectively Traditional site reliability engineeringThough symbiotic the relationship between engineering and operations may encounter pitfalls at more complex organizations The introduction to Google s Site Reliability Engineering How Google Runs Production Systems describes how the two groups may have varied goals backgrounds skill sets incentives vocabulary and assumptions And when left unchecked strife can form as organizational effectiveness breaks down Google s solution to this problem is the discipline of site reliability engineering SRE Developers are tasked with writing software that creates a stable environment for the deployment and operation of the infrastructure Site reliability engineers at Google work with development teams on a sort of contract ーSRE runs the application only if development follows the practices needed to make the application run efficiently If the development team does not hold up their end of the bargain then the SRE will decline to hold up theirs and work with teams who do This works well for Google but turning down work from one part of our engineering team is not an option for the Aha team We have no site reliability engineers on staff at Aha ーbecause we found a better way Unified engineering goalsWe solved the problem of the development operations split by defining clear goals for our dedicated platform team Our platform team has goals similar to a traditional operations team such as Operability ーHow do we run the system on a day to day basis and make routine changes Reliability ーHow do we ensure the system is available for our customers Resilience ーWhen the system is unavailable how do we get it running again Observability ーHow do we ensure that we know before our customers when the system needs help We have also adopted six additional goals to help us create a happy effective and high performing engineering team Inverse toilToil refers to the time engineers spend doing repetitive work that doesn t deliver real value to customers While the amount of manual work the platform team needs to do to operate production is higher than the rest of the engineering team we still try to keep our time spent toiling to a minimum For most of our platform engineers it s less than of their time Google s SREs target or less time spent toiling so we believe that our investments in automation have been very effective Release velocityHow long does it take a pull request to be deployed after being flagged as ready While we attempt to optimize the time taken in continuous integration test automation is not a core focus for us Our developers closest to the code are best suited to test it so we leave that responsibility to them We instead focus on the deployment pipeline ーbuilding the core images and getting them into production Simplifying that process allows it to be done many times a day Change managementIn addition to deployment speed some changes require a gradual rollout or an experimental stage to validate the changes we made The platform team manages the feature flag functionality at Aha and continues to extend it to provide support for more use cases Developer productivityThe platform team maintains a robust logging system to allow our engineers to troubleshoot problems in production quickly and effectively without direct access to customer data We maintain the Docker setup for local development to give engineers a stable way to run the application and all of its dependencies Our dynamic staging setup allows us to get new features in front of the product marketing and Customer Success teams early in the development process Application performanceAll engineers should attempt to create a performant application Our focus on monitoring and observability allows us to find problems in production and start the troubleshooting process Some features may need to go back into development for optimization but we can often solve the problem through algorithmic tweaks indexing changes or other database management techniques Our experience looking into these issues gives us a sense of where additional caching reducing object allocations or other techniques could be used to bolster end user performance These goals and techniques are also shared by the DevOps movement which attempts to push all the operations work back onto the engineering team However developing a large monolithic Rails application with a robust and modern front end framework encompasses two very deep skill sets Asking all of our engineers to also be AWS networking and database engineers is asking far too much Our platform team serves and empowers the rest of the engineering organization All of our goals unite to serve the company vision Making complicated problems simpleWithout new features to uncover what is currently possible with our infrastructure we wouldn t be able to solve complex problems Part of that empowerment entails building out all new infrastructure and paradigms that can be used to solve tomorrow s problems We ve made a massive effort toward integrating Kafka into our infrastructure this year which is typical of this kind of investment By having some space away from product facing work we re able to think of our product engineers as internal customers We can build out tools and infrastructure that will support the development of future features and products Platform for profitRemember the profit center vs cost center distinction New development generally gets billed as profit generating but the operations side of an organization has the unique ability to drive costs down This is done through fine tuning the spend on Cloud resources optimizing execution to require less of those resources in the first place and selecting time saving technologies Infrastructure budget is a vital component of the technical roadmap for any platform team When the development team is bottlenecked for infrastructure reasons the organization loses out on critical first mover advantages in the marketplace Poor engineering practices can lead to a deficit of our most important asset ーthe team We want our teammates to love what they do ーincreasing employee joy is the aim and core of our company s existence And it makes financial sense too Replacing an engineer s institutional knowledge and expertise takes time Attrition makes your hiring plan doubly difficult to achieve Need for speedFocusing on optimization allows platform engineers to improve the company s service in noticeable ways Speed is a feature because performance expectations are similar to the delays we expect in a normal conversation A response of ms feels instantaneous but delays longer than one second start to interrupt the user s flow of thought Beyond four seconds the user can no longer smoothly interact with a system Products in your daily workflow should be reliable and resilient ーthese two factors drive the happy use of software Failures can occur through human error hardware malfunction or bugs in vendor packages However my experience has shown that a system that recovers quickly when it fails is viewed more favorably than one that fails infrequently but has a longer recovery time A system in this case may refer not only to your software and hardware but also your operations engineers and customer success teams When failures are still within the realm of exceptional behavior and are fixed rapidly we find those customer interactions are generally positive ーeven lovable Customers who love your product will keep using it reducing churn increasing profit and expand the use of the product within their own organization Platform teams support the broader engineering organization by being prepared to respond quickly to the most debilitating failure modes This is a core overlap with SRE teams as well Structuring engineering teamsIf SRE teams are the defense and engineers are the offense then platform teams are the mid fielders They save goals as often as they score them Their presence makes the rest of the engineering organization more effective at their core objectives However keep in mind the time spent toiling If the platform infrastructure QA and tooling engineers spend over half of their time responding directly to incidents or on call work you may need a dedicated reliability team If every week has a new emergent behavior that requires platform engineers to drop everything and fix it it s time to adopt more proactive measures to build resilience monitoring and fault tolerance And when those tasks take up more than half the platform team s time it s time to honor reality and break off a dedicated reliability engineering team Platform and SRE teams do much of the same work ーthe division between them is more like a gradient than a clear line When the platform team is fully aligned with engineering and company goals it can incorporate a healthy SRE culture that meets its needs Focusing on observability recovery and reliability saves costs and increases reliability while the platform team works on enhancing the developer experience and building new infrastructure for future features or projects Grow your career and be Because of this I ve covered so many stories about frontend architecture and how we can make it extensible to god knows what extent In fact to reduce the reusable workload I create a custom repo section on the website to easily download the repository with top notch packages pre installed of your choice Not the only storylineBut that s not the point of today s story we are completely in a chaotic world We have so many packages tools frameworks and concepts to depend yet we are not able to develop the most extensible fast and highly customisable products Introducing a new trade off currency in software developmentExtensible Customisable and Scalable are the new trade offs or so called new currency Let s explore this with my favourite section called real world example Supabase vs FirebaseRecently I post a tweet asking questions on the price fluctuations of Firebase alternative Supabase Supabase vs Firebase Price discussion on TwitterTwitter is so good you can directly solve your doubts with the largest community in the world instantly The discussion went good even the Supabase founder Ant Wilson replied by attaching an article from tech crunch about the hike in google storage price But that s not the point the most important thing the people mentioned about Supabase is we can directly eject the database and independently run it on our own server Imagine a few years down the line when your website got huge traffic you can simply eject supabase and runs your own backend servers independently This means scalable and extensible and further we can customise the database to whatever extent we want This is what makes people happy behind using supabase Another thing that motivates developers to contribute to the supabase is its open source They have sponsors and more than contributors so far The firebase alternative is ready to crash the market and go higher and higher But the real trade off happens because it s quite scalable easy to use customisable and extensible Let s take another example that I am discussing a lot nowadays Astro ーthe all in one frameworkAstro follows Island architecture under the hood Meaning loads each and every component independently and exclusively This makes Astor quite fast in as compared to Next js and other javascript competitors But that s not the only thing why Astro is getting so much love and recognition Astro is termed as an all in one framework meaning we can write React Svelte and Vue code in a single repository We can use markdown extension to lazy loading optimised image components and third party like TailwindCSS and vercel integrations in a single repository Shorts for Astro introductionImagine writing HTML or markdown directly for static pages such as blog and using React with Redux or Zustand for home pages that requires complex state management in a single repository This makes Astro highly extensible and customisable and we can do whatever we want in a single repository This is the future I can see where we don t argue among the frameworks to choose instead we just add whatever we want in whatever fashion Next js industry standardsSo let s understand Next js developed by Vercel Next js file based routing is loved by almost all frameworks across the globe Recently I read the post from the Expo team that helps to develop apps that work across Mobile and desktop Expo Swipe EraWe all loved the tinder swipe effect and getting used to it very well Tinder makes the trademark in the industry for providing the most effortless user experience In this story where Josep Ferrer covered how tinder thinks and creates the most effective functionality This single functionality disrupts the market and because of this we can witness more swipe functionalities on the browser itself Because it s scalable and extensible and easy to use people are loving it including developers Xstate ーThe futuristic state managementXstate is the state management library that is so underrated The most important thing about Xstate is its extensibility meaning you can use it React Vue Svelte and even with vanilla javascript If you want to learn here is the introduction shorts on the Finite State Machines concept Introduction to Finite State MachinesXstate is not constrained to a single framework you are using which makes it powerful Understand that in future if we want to remove React then only the UI component required a change the entire UI logic and business logic can still remain untouched we can replace React with the new framework easily and this all is possible because Xstate is extensible with other libraries Headless UIThis is quite a trending concept and people are loving it including meLet me explain earlier when we have to develop UI we use third party packages like Material UI React Bootstrap or Ant Design and add the logic to the components To create the website according to your theme we have to override the CSS or add the new themes to each and every component provided by these third party libraries So these libraries come with the cost of customisable and extensibility that they don t understand until they have a competitor in the market Competition is good for consumersI am talking about Mantine dev this is a headless UI library that only provides components and you can directly add your styling to each component No overriding time saving extensible and customisable components library Now look what happens when we have so much love for mantine dev and headless UI The Material UI backed by google itself developed and launched the MUI Base called Headless Material UI MUI Base release twitter threadThis is the power of open source and hence new currency to make transactions called Extensible Customisable and Flexibility Even another React Frontend UI library Chakra UI is proceeding in this direction by creating a headless UI library without providing any styling We are having more and more libraries that will provide only the functionality and you take care of the design and looks and styles basically making it highly customisable and scalable and extensible In addition Chakra UI is planning to go further they will use Xstate in the business logic for a component so that they can provide highly customisable and extensible components that can be used directly with React Svelte and Vue and saves a lot of their time in creating components for each of the individual frameworks Chakra UI team have named it ZagjsI have asked directly with the Chakra UI founder about this new headless UI library using Xstate in the backend Here is the reply ーChakra UI founder on releasing ZagjsThe idea is to use Xstate to create a Headless UI library that is highly customisable extensible and scalable making it a high standard product and easy to trade off among developers See I told you Twitter is quite a product you can talk directly to the founders team members and to whomever you want USD in Trade Extensible Customisable and Scalable in Software developmentJust like the USA did in the s swapping GOLD with USD to make any trade in the world Well this is the story I can see with all other third party packages companies and open source products All of them are somehow promising to be in among one of the categories and that s the right way to make products for developers and consumers Encouragement is still rareBut we all should also understand one thing irrespective of making such high standard promises these companies are working extensively hard to stand on it It s very easy to condemn the product or third party or to say bad about any package or software we have used Developing and maintaining open source products is quite a task and a lot of developers are not even getting paid for the hard work We should understand that competition should stay alive but it should not make people jobless instead it should create more opportunities That is why I covered most of the underrated working to help you find food and local businessesAt its Search On event today Google unveiled several new ways to help people more easily find what they re looking for Some things can be trickier to locate than most like a particular style of clothing or a certain fragrance But when it comes to food that makes your mouth and eyes water Google thinks it can help Engadget spoke with vice president and general manager of Local Search Yul Kwon to learn how the company believes it can bring people to the dishes they re craving Kwon s lived many lives You might remember him as the winner of Survivor Cook Islands but he s also been a management consultant a law practitioner and the owner of several Red Mango franchise locations in California quot I lost about pounds during the show and when I came back I was so hungry quot he said quot I basically just sat there and ate everything and anything I could get my hands on quot His ravenous spiral led to a quot pound weight swing quot which drove Kwon to find healthier alternatives to junk food and dessert On a trip to Los Angeles Kwon discovered frozen yogurt and was hooked But the dearth of high quality frozen yogurt stores in the Bay Area at the time meant it was hard for him to find the tasty treat at home Inspired and driven by the desire to make an quot unlimited supply of frozen yogurt for me to eat myself quot Kwon opened stores in downtown Palo Alto San Carlos and San Jose nbsp Over time competition in the froyo business grew intense as more and more stores opened to cater to growing demand quot At some point everyone and their grandma was opening a frozen yogurt store quot Kwon said quot A lot of the stores that opened were lower quality and lower cost and so they were not as healthy quot Max Morse reutersKwon said that amid this spike it not only became became tough to differentiate his business from the competition but the tools to reach and engage with customers just weren t available quot It was harder to track new customers to get the word out and we didn t really have great tools to drive word of mouth or use technology to drive awareness quot Eventually the financial crisis of became the final straw and Kwon had to close his businesses nbsp This is a story that s all too familiar Small local businesses lacking the tools to reach larger audiences eventually have to cave to competition and shutter Though services like GrubHub and DoorDash have made it easier for people to discover restaurants to order food from they often charge high fees and offer businesses little control over how they re presented nbsp These days companies turn to social media to reach would be customers and making an attractive profile can determine how successful you are Skills that have little to do with running a restaurant like photography and caption writing are now key to bringing in money Though it s not technically social media Google Maps and Search results also play crucial parts in whether a business thrives or fails If a restaurant s Maps listing has a rating that s lower than four stars or if it doesn t have a menu available for perusal a potential diner can quickly be turned off nbsp GoogleUpdated digital menus and vibe checksOne of these potential roadblocks is fairly easy to solve Not only does Google already provide a digital menu on most listings it also groups user submitted pictures of physical menus for easier reference The company also announced today that it s expanding its coverage of digital menus quot making them more visually rich and reliable nbsp quot We combine menu information provided by people and merchants and found on restaurant websites that use open standards for data sharing quot Sophia Lin the company s general manager of Food and Search wrote in a blog post Google also uses image and language understanding technologies like its Multitask Unified Model to scrape available data and produce these menus which will also showcase most popular dishes and call out different dietary options starting with just vegetarian and vegan Just like Neighborhood Vibe that Google just announced for Maps a new feature is also coming to Search to help capture and relay to users what makes a restaurant stand out quot Star ratings are helpful but they don t tell you everything about a restaurant quot Lin wrote In the coming months listings will show pictures and reviews that the company s machine learning systems determined are representative of how a place feels nbsp We ve all been there…a food craving you can t get off your mind In the coming months you can search for a specific dish like quot soup dumplings near me quot and quickly see what local restaurants offer it with pictures and reviews ーsatisfying that craving in percent of people already have a dish in mind when they search for food quot Lin wrote quot So to help people find what they re looking for in the coming months you ll be able to search for any dish and see the local places that offer it quot Lin gave the example of soup dumplings which she said is a family favorite The new multisearch near me tool can not only identify the type of xiao long bao the Chinese name for soup dumplings or XLB for the well informed in a picture but can also tell you where you can buy it near you You can also get more specific with your search nbsp According to Lin quot In the past searching for soup dumplings near me would show a list of related restaurants With our revamped experience we ll now show you the exact dish results you ve been looking for You can even narrow your search down to spicy dishes if you want a bit of a kick quot Of course these new tools alone won t help struggling small businesses thrive but they do help users better understand what restaurants have to offer nbsp When Kwon recounts his experiences running his Red Mango franchises he feels on hindsight that quot it was hard for people to really understand how we differed from other yogurt shops It wasn t any like one place that could go to to really help them find what they re looking for quot Kwon said he learned from that ordeal how hard it was to be successful as a small business and wanted to do something to help people in similar situations He believes that building a set of tools that help small businesses succeed is how he can make a difference quot Ultimately technology can be the great equalizer quot he said quot It can be the thing that helps small businesses can change on an even playing field within the big guys quot While today s announcements on their own don t seem to specifically target local businesses trying to reach customers in their community Kwon says the updates quot help people connect and find the types of foods that they re looking for quot which he said is part of helping build relationships between people and their communities I want to see Google do more to help and empower small local businesses trying worked closely with the largest operators in the transportation and logistics industries to help them improve customer experiences and delivery operations at scale via our Mobility services By popular demand we re opening many of these advanced routing capabilities to all Google Maps Platform developers in the countries where they re available Today we re announcing the Preview release of the new Routes API an enhanced version of the Directions and Distance Matrix APIs that combines both of these into a single service and enables you to provide more informative and flexible routes for your users  The new Routes API builds on the foundational features of the Directions and Distance Matrix APIs that your business relies on like comprehensive up to date directions with real time traffic and calculating distances and ETAs for matrices of origin and destination combinations But it also offers new advanced features so you can provide more informative flexible routes and improved ETA accuracy including wheel routes for motorized vehicles coverage Tolls data for more accurate pricing on how much a route costs coverage Real time traffic information along each segment of a routeSpecifying whether a waypoint is a pass through location or a stopping point Fine tuned controls for reducing latencyEco friendly routing coming later this year Starting today you can access the new Routes API You can also still access the existing Directions API and Distance Matrix API but you ll get additional capabilities and enhanced performance with the Routes API Let s take a closer look at what you can do with this new API Deliver more informative flexible routesTwo wheel motorized vehicle supportIn many parts of the world two wheel motorized vehicles are the most common form of transportation for everything from delivery to ridesharing to everyday travel The new Routes API gives you the ability to request directions and distance matrix calculations for this mode of transportation and takes a variety of factors into account such as whether toll roads highways and ferries can be avoided and routing along paths that are not accessible to cars A representative mock on you and your users toll calculations For both directions and distance matrix requests you can now request toll calculations to help make informed decisions about tradeoffs between time and cost Tolls data provides more accurate pricing on how much your route would cost taking into consideration vehicle type e g EV hybrid and type of electronic toll pass  A representative mock up showing to specify whether live or historical traffic should be taken into account in route calculations It also gives you control over tradeoffs between traffic and polyline quality and latency In addition you can request traffic information along each leg of a route which enables you to create richer experiences for your users like representing traffic with color coded polylines Routes can also be routeFine tuned controls to reduce latencyThe new Routes API introduces additional options for improving the performance of your app It is even more performant than the existing Directions and Distance Matrix APIs and provides features that allow you to make tradeoffs between comprehensive accuracy and reduced latency With field masking you can choose which fields are returned in the API response such as ETA distance in meters traffic conditions and more This allows you to decrease response payload sizes and simplify the response making it easier to process Improve ETA accuracy with smarter more flexible waypointsThe new Routes API also improves ETA accuracy with smarter waypoints Intermediate waypoints allow you to specify whether the user will pass through or stop at a waypoint to improve travel time calculations This is also particularly useful for pick up and drop off use cases as it ensures the user won t be directed to a location where stopping is unsafe such as a tunnel or highway In addition you can specify the appropriate side of the road for a waypoint or the vehicle s current or desired direction of travel on each waypoint which can help ensure that events like removed the limitation of origin and destination points and you can now set up to total returned elements allowing more flexibility Coming soon Make more sustainable choices with eco friendly routingIn the coming months we will be bringing eco friendly routing to developers helping you find routes that are optimized for lower fuel consumption using insights from the US Department of Energy s National Renewable Energy Laboratory and data from the European Environment Agency The most fuel efficient route will vary based on real time traffic and what type of engine you have Drivers using eco friendly routing can select their engine type ーpetrol or gas diesel hybrid or electric vehicle EV ーin order to get the best route and most accurate fuel or energy efficiency estimates For example delivery companies or ridesharing services can measure fuel consumption and savings for a single trip multiple trips or even across their entire fleet to improve their business performance Eco
