Puppeteer on AWS LambdaWondering how you can get Puppeteer to work properly on AWS Lambda You re in the right place In this post we ll cover the main challenges you can encounter while trying to do that But first let s start with introducing both Puppeteer and AWS Lambda What is Puppeteer Simply put Puppeteer is a software for controlling a headless browser It s a piece of open source software developed and supported by Google s developer tools team It allows you to simulate user interaction with a browser through a simple API This is very helpful for doing things like automated tests or web scraping A picture s worth a thousand words How much is a gif worth With a little bit of code shown in the gif below I can log in to a Google account You simply need to click enter text paginate and scrape all the publicly available data you need What is AWS Lambda AWS Lambda is what Amazon calls “Run code without thinking about servers or clusters You can simply create a function on Lambda and then execute it It s that easy Simply put you can do everything on AWS Lambda Okay everything is a strong word but almost For example it is possible to scrape thousands of public web pages every night with AWS Lambda functions Also it manages to insert data into databases Getting started with AWS Lambda is simple and inexpensive You only need to pay for what you use and they also have a generous free trial Problem Puppeteer is too big to push to LambdaAWS Lambda has a MB limit on the zip file you push directly to it Due to the fact that it installs Chromium the Puppeteer package is significantly larger than that However this MB limit doesn t apply when you load the function from S See the documentation here AWS Lambda quotas can be tight for PuppeteerThe MB unzipped can be bypassed by uploading directly from an S bucket So we create a bucket in S use a node script to upload to S and then update our Lambda code from that bucket The script looks something like this zip npm run build amp amp z a r function zip dist node modules sendToLambda npm run zip amp amp aws s cp function zip s chrome aws amp amp rm function zip amp amp aws lambda update function code function name puppeteer examples s bucket chrome aws s key function zip Puppeteer on AWS Lambda doesn t workBy default Linux including AWS Lambda doesn t include the necessary libraries required to allow Puppeteer to function Fortunately there already exists a package of Chromium built for AWS Lambda You can find it here You will need to install it and puppeteer core in your function that you are sending to Lambda The regular Puppeteer package will not be needed and in fact counts against your MB limit npm i save chrome aws lambda puppeteer coreAnd then when you are setting it up to launch a browser from Puppeteer it will look like this const browser await chromium puppeteer launch args chromium args defaultViewport chromium defaultViewport executablePath await chromium executablePath headless chromium headless Final notePuppeteer requires more memory than a regular script so keep an eye on your max memory usage When using Puppeteer we recommend at least MB on your AWS Lambda function Also don t forget to run await browser close at the end of your script Otherwise you may end up with your function running until timeout for no reason because the browser is still alive and waiting for commands |

Define workflows with Java DSLWorkflows are usually seen as a way to orchestrate systems But that is just one of the uses cases Workflows can be really good at expressing business logic to increase visibility into the logic implemented But then the question is how to define workflows In many cases workflows are represented as models e g flow charts That requires modelling tools as well which is not always what developers want to do So to help developers enter the world of workflows Automatiko an open source toolkit to build services and functions based on workflows introduced recently a Workflow Java DSL This domain specific language DSL comes with a handy fluent like API to define workflows It is very well integrated with any IDE to provide easy entry point for any developer Let s have a quick look at the basics of it Workflowspublic class MyWorkflows public WorkflowBuilder splitAndJoin WorkflowBuilder builder WorkflowBuilder newWorkflow splitAndJoin Sample workflow with exclusive split and join String x builder dataObject String class x String y builder dataObject String class y SplitNodeBuilder split builder start start here then log log values X is and Y is x y thenSplit split JoinNodeBuilder join split when gt x null log first branch first branch thenJoin join split when gt y null log second branch second branch thenJoin join join then log after join joined then end done return builder Few important aspects to note here class that is annotated with Workflows instructs to create an service API for every public method that returns WorkflowBuildersplitAndJoin method defines a simple workflow thatdeclares two data objects x and y of type stringfirst thing it logs the values of both data objectsthen it splits into different paths depending on the value of the data objectsthen joins it back logs a messageand ends the workflowBased on this workflow definition Automatiko at build time will generate a fully featured REST service API that will expose this workflow as a service In addition to that workflow diagram will also be generated based on above workflow definition With just few lines of workflow DSL developers not only gain possibility to define business logic in descriptive way but get out of the box service api and visualisation of the execution for every instance This is just very simple introduction to the Workflow Java DSL and more complete getting started guide can be found in Automatiko documentation which I encourage you to have a look and give it a try If you have some interesting use cases that could challenge the workflows I would be more than happy to try it out Let s see how far workflows can be taken to cover business logic Lastly a short video demonstrating Automatiko Workflow Java DSL |
