implement a serverless architecture for an event sourcing based application you are in the right place This article aims at sharing with you years of learnings saving you the trouble to make the same mistakes we did at Kumo and providing you with a guidebook to have the most stable and the least painful solution you can go with In this article I assume that you have at least a basic knowledge of what is CQRS This article is an excellent page to understand more deeply the ins and outs of CQRS pattern if you feel the need before diving into the interesting things Quick overview of an event sourcing solution implementing a CQRS interfaceBank applications are one type of business requiring to store a trace of all business events These business events are the transactions made on a bank account such as credit and debit actions Let s take the example of a banking application that would need to display both the balance of the account and the last transaction made This architecture is an implementation of CQRS interface for the use case of the bank which has to store all credit and debit events There are two commands writing credit and debit events in an event ledger There are two queries that each fetch its associated projection the total balance of the account and the last transaction made As you can see the missing part of the diagram is the synchronization between the write model and the read model That s the block this article focus on First and foremost in event sourcing the order of events is essentialAll credit and debit events for every user are stored in the event ledger The access pattern chosen is the userId as the partition key and the number of the event also called the version as the sort key Why using a version field when we can simply take the timestamp to keep track of the order of the events Two commands coming in concurrently will write data based on the same version of the aggregate because they fetched it simultaneously Let s say a user has on his bank account and two purchases come in at the same time one of and one of Both event would both succeed the business validation tests The composite key userId timestamp of both event would be unique because timestamps would be really close but not exactly the same Hence both events would be written in the event ledger and you would be overdrawn which is forbidden in our bank On the other hand if the sort key is the version of the event one out of both would be invalid Exact simultaneity doesn t exist in computer science so the first purchase of would be written and then shortly after the second purchase would be rejected because the event to be written is based on the same version of the last event How is the synchronization between read and write models ensured The pain point in CQRS is to have reliable reading data compared to the source of truth Projections need to be updated according to events written in the event ledger Listening to written eventsThe objective here is to react in real time to events written inside the event ledger in order to compute the projections For that a lambda as a fanout can be used by plugging it to the DynamoDB streams of the event ledger INSERT actions have to be filtered with the filter patterns so that only theses actions trigger the fanout DynamoDB batches its streams of events in arrays so for each of them an event is published in Amazon EventBridge These EventBridge events are those triggering the lambda that project on the read models You may wonder why not directly plug the projector to the streamsFor reasons Stream events that trigger a failing lambda will retry indefinitely until the lambda succeeds That makes it impossible to have a custom retry policy for events triggering a projector You can only plug lambda maximum to the streams and generally application contain more than sets of data to display therefore more than projectors The correct tool to plug multiple listeners to messages is an Event Bus The fanout delivers events to one or multiple recipients Each projector which is a recipient of those events only needs to listen to events altering the data it s associated to For example a projector writing user individual information such as the name family name and address doesn t need to be triggered by a credit event From a dev reliable architecture to a prod safe architectureThis works fine in dev but not in production yet This data synchronization architecture will face bugs later on Let me explain When traffic starts to grow more and more events will flow and one thing EventBridge doesn t ensure is the order of the events sent in the bus event In order not to overwrite an information with an older one the last version of event that updated the projection must be kept track of EventBridge ensures that an event is sent at least once but it can still be received more than once So projections need to be idempotent In dev when a projection needs to be updated or a new one needs to be created wiping the databases and creating new data is the easy way to go to test this new feature But in production that is not an option Projections are made from the succession of all events that happened that s why the solution is to find a way to replay all events to recreate the projections Projectors must be idempotent and disorder proof thus they can handle smoothly a replay of all events EventBridge Archive the bogus good ideaEventBridge offers the possibility to replay all events that went through its service This feature is called EventBridge Archive There are main issues with that solution Replaying all events implies a high traffic when having a high number of events Some events that are replayed can be useless so that s useless traffic and thus useless run time This leaves two sources of truth And Archive data can t be edited it is immutable It can be an issue 🪄A trick to make data synchronization and replay easierThe best solution would be that every projector has access to the current state of the data every time they need to update their projection They would all have to fetch all events to compute the aggregate every time an update of the projection would be needed The same aggregate would be computed across multiple projectors at the same time which makes this solution not very efficient Unless The trick we came up with at Kumo is implementing state carried events Instead of computing the same aggregate in every projector and giving them all access to the event ledger the aggregate is computed once and it is attached to the dispatched events It takes the form of a new Lambda function that takes only one event in argument computes the aggregate and attaches it to the event before republishing it We named it dispatchAggregate The fanout still transforms an array of streams to published EventBridge events triggering the dispatchAggregate Lambda It also has still very low risk of failing by not adding the action of computing the aggregate out of all DynamoDB events This is the EventBridge event such as it is dispatched after the fanout and such as it was listened by projectors before the trick userId d b d eb aafefdd eventType Debit payload amount version And this is the shape of the event triggering the projectors that contain the aggregate aggregate lastKnownVersion totalBalance lastMonthBalance lastEvent userId d b d eb aafefdd eventType Debit payload amount version The job of the projectors become trivialThe aggregate represents the current state of the data at the version of the latest event taken into account Furthermore there is no rule about the shape of the aggregate and it can be customized in the most exploitable way For this use case it can be built with keys being all the projections lastKnownVersion totalBalance lastMonthBalance With an access to the aggregate projectors have at their disposal the exact value of the projection they each handle and the last version of this data So it s not necessary to update the projection based on the previous value anymore The projector can simply use the PutItem command of DynamoDB to overwrite the previous value only if the version incoming is strictly superior to current one stored The projections become idempotent and they allow more flexibility in the way they are triggered The replay is then extremely simple It s as simple as writing a replay type event in the ledger All projectors need to listen to the corresponding EventBridge event Then every time a replay type event is written in the ledger all projectors update their projection with their latest version Do not forget to ignore this replay type event in the reducer when computing the aggregate A possible drawback of the dispatchAggregate lambdaThe computation time of the dispatchAggregate lambda adds run time to the process But it is acceptable after checking the results we have on our lambda The run time of the dispatchAggregate lambda with a cold start is ms on average and pretty much consistently But the run time of the same lambda when it s already hot is between ms and ms for the slowest runs depending on the userId in question The latency is very low in general because there is only one gateway through which the events go therefore the lambda is hot most of the time The run time topic may become an issue when the number of events becomes enormous For computing the aggregate all events must be fetched and reduced within the lambda and it might be really long to handle that much events But here again there is a solution In fact snapshots of the aggregate can be stored in the event ledger A snapshot representing the aggregate of version N allow not to worry about events of versions strictly inferior to N and start from this one when computing the aggregate What s left for us to do to implement the most effective solution with the latest releasesBoth the issues I ve mentioned about the retry policy of the lambda plugged to the streams and the number of lambda you can plug to a stream is no longer true since this summer In terms of efficiency we still need a single lambda to compute the aggregate since it s time consuming operation so the rule of plugging multiple lambda to the streams is not a rule that will change this architecture The opportunity here is that we can have the lambda dispatching the events to the projectors failing without worrying about and infinite retry or loosing data The error handling allows the configuration of destination for failed events and for a retry policy of my choice Having both a fanout that must not fail and a dispatchAggregate to compute and attach the aggregate to the event becomes useless A step can now be skipped by having the dispatchAggregate receiving the DynamoDB streams computing and attaching the aggregate to the events before publishing them in EventBridge A retry policy and a destination for failed events must be configured on this lambda This should make it the most efficient and up to date solution for synchronizing data between an event ledger and projections in an event sourcing application We have learned a lot about event sourcing at learning performance the company was able to create more advanced apps and features for its handsets without needing help from the cloud And now with the launch of the Pixel and Pro alongside the Tensor G it feels like Google is deepening the marriage between its hardware and software On the outside Google is using a similar template to what we got with the Pixel with a couple of notable tweaks On the Pixel you get a screen made from Gorilla Glass Victus while in back there s an even more pronounced camera bar that now extends seamlessly from the phone s frame across the width of the device This should provide some added durability while still allowing the device to lie flat well mostly on a table Sam Rutherford EngadgetSimilar to last year the finishes of the two phones vary slightly between models with the Pixel getting a brushed aluminum look while Pixel Pro gets a shiny polished chassis That said while the Pixel Pro s design is supposed to feel a bit more premium than its cheaper sibling I actually kind of prefer the matte look on the standard Pixel And for what it s worth I think the Pixel has slightly more fun colors as well with options including snow obsidian and lemongrass compared to the slightly more sedate snow obsidian and hazel paint jobs on the Pro And while I m sure I m not the first person to notice this I still can t shake the feeling that the back of the Pixel looks like a character from Among Us So depending on your tastes the Pixel s design could be very hit or miss but I m enjoying it so far One notable change for the Pixel specifically is that with a inch Hz OLED screen it s actually a tiny bit smaller than the outgoing Pixel which feels like a small win for compact phone fans It s not so much that it feels like a huge difference compared to the previous model but it might be just enough to make the device feel a bit nimbler especially if you don t have huge hands Sam Rutherford EngadgetAs for the Pixel Pro Google opted for a inch Hz display However I must say it s kind of hard to tell the difference in refresh rates even when you re holding them side by side And while it doesn t show up on a spec sheet the Pixel Pro s glass is percent flatter so there s a bit less distortion around the edges of the screen Both phones get the same MP front facing camera though it still has a fixed focusing system which is a relatively minor inconvenience compared to the true autofocus system on the iPhone s selfie shooter Around back Google is using a familiar MP main cam alongside a MP ultra wide shooter But when it comes to photography perhaps the biggest camera upgrade is the new MP x telephoto zoom on the Pixel Pro Not only is it longer than the Pixel Pro s x lens Google also redesigned the way the camera pushes in to capture more detailed images throughout the phone s entire range Sam Rutherford EngadgetSimilar to before from x to x the Pro uses the MP main sensor to take short distance shots and then crops as needed But from x to x the phone fuses images from both the main and telephoto lenses to create a more detailed composite Then between x and x switches completely over to the zoom cam with Google using pixel binning to reduce total resolution down from MP And then above x the phone uses full res crops from the telephoto cam before the phone hits its full x magnification I know this is all extremely techy but the end result is a much smoother zoom experience across and more detailed shots that look better than anything I ve seen from practically any other phone That said I m going to want to do some more testing before I make any final judgments Some of the new camera software also looks impressive There s a Cinematic Blur feature for video that adds a soft bokeh to the background of your clips while still supporting full bit color with HDR And from what I ve seen so far it looks great as if you ve been using a much more expensive camera And for more general use Google says it has upgraded the Pixel s image stabilization and noise correction as well Sam Rutherford EngadgetMeanwhile for photos Google says the Tensor G helps improve the Pixel s Face Unblur tool and speeds Night Sight processing by up to x There s also a new Photo Unblur feature that can sharpen pics regardless of when it was taken or what camera they came from Google says all the processing for Photo Unblur is done locally on the phone and in a brief demo some of the results were so good they were kind of hard to believe But that s the best and worst thing about Pixels because now that their hardware and software are so intertwined it s difficult to really get a sense of how they perform after only a brief hands on And that s before we talk about other more niche features like faster menus for Direct My Call and the ability to transcribe audio messages into text which I hear is popular in Europe but less so in the US Both the Pixel and Pro felt snappy and the phones high refresh rate displays made switching between apps feel super smooth That said it s still up to Google to avoid any bugs or issues with future software updates like we experienced on the Pixel So for now what I will say is that I m definitely digging the Pixel s tweaked design Cinematic Blur makes videos look great and as someone who loves telephoto lenses I can t wait to see what I can do with the Pro s new x zoom And perhaps best of all with the standard Pixel retaining the starting price or on Verizon for one with mmWave G upgrading to Google s latest flagship costs less than its 海外TECH	Engadget	Pixel Watch hands-on: Possibly the prettiest smartwatch I’ve touched	https://www.engadget.com/pixel-watch-hands-on-wear-os-fitbit-152556235.html?src=rss	Pixel Watch hands on Possibly the prettiest smartwatch I ve touchedWe ve been waiting years and years for the Pixel Watch to finally be real Because it s taken so long for Google to show us its own smartwatch expectations are high for the company to deliver something impressive We were able to get a preview of the Pixel Watch ahead of its full launch at the Made By Google event in Brooklyn today and honestly I m very taken by its design The device is only available in one size mm though there are various band options It s fairly dainty at about the same size as the small Apple Watch but even on wrists larger than mine it didn t look comically tiny More importantly its design is clean and attractive The case without its strap feels like a polished pebble and I flipped it over and over in my hand all while caressing its smooth edges and curves I didn t attempt to scratch or break the screen during my time with it but the fact that it s covered in a custom “D Corning Gorilla Glass gives me some assurance that it ll survive a fall The case on its own has no lugs To attach straps you ll have to twist attachments into grooves on the side like you re screwing a lens onto a DSLR s body You ll have to find the spot where they line up push the head of the band slightly into the slot then slide it in horizontally It takes a bit of learning but once you get it the action is easy to master Because it doesn t have lugs the Pixel Watch offers plenty of variation in design and can also fit more snugly on your wrist The stainless steel case is available in matte black polished silver and champagne gold and the last one is my favorite Loads of straps are available too from the typical rubbery sports bands to those made from leather metal mesh and links Some of these come with lugs so you can add a classic touch back to the timepiece Google s stretch woven band is pretty low profile and wearing it is like gluing a pebble onto a rubber band and pulling it over your wrist except elegant I liked this combination ーnot only was it easy to wear it was also light enough that I imagine it would be comfortable to wear to bed That s important because Google has built in sleep tracking features to the Pixel Watch which runs what the company calls Wear OS It s a variation of the software that it co engineered with Samsung last year with some tweaks that incorporate Fitbit s health and fitness tracking tools You ll get background heart rate monitoring at a rate of once every second auto workout detection and more thanks to the onboard blood oxygen sensor and a “multipurpose electrical sensor But that s not all that s different about Wear OS Google has made some new watch faces ー families altogether ーthat allow for different views and customizable complications You can add things like your steps progress the weather and more Features you d expect like GPS LTE Google Pay and third party app support are all available There s also an Always On Display and in spite of this and the higher rate of pulse reading Google says the Pixel Watch s mAh battery should last hours thanks to a dedicated low power co processor for these types of tasks When you run out of juice the Pixel Watch should get up to percent charged in minutes using Google s USB C magnetic cable For more intensive actions the Watch taps its Exynos processor and with GB of storage onboard there s plenty of room for apps or saving music for offline playback From my brief time with the Pixel Watch so far the new Wear OS feels very similar to Apple s watchOS That s not a bad thing ーAndroid users have long lacked a smartwatch that s comparable to the Apple Watch Though Google s Watch works best with Pixel phones it s also compatible with phones running Android or newer So far the Pixel Watch is one of the most beautiful smartwatches I ve seen and I ve seen many Though some Fossil wearables look nicer I m excited by what Google is offering with the new Wear OS and Fitbit app We ll need to spend more time with it in the real world for me to know if it s a decent Apple Watch competitor but for now color me intrigued Follow all of the news from Google s Pixel event right here	2022-10-06 15:25:56
海外TECH	Engadget	Google Pixel 7 camera app adds ‘Cinematic Blur’ and accessibility features	https://www.engadget.com/pixel-7-pixel-7-pro-camera-features-150718081.html?src=rss	Google Pixel camera app adds Cinematic Blur and accessibility featuresGoogle just launched its Pixel and Pixel Pro smartphones and as expected the cameras haven t changed much from the previous model hardware wise As usual though Google has introduced a bunch of new and useful AI software camera tricks powered by the new Tensor G chip including updates to Real Tone along with the new Super Res Zoom Photo Unblur and Cinematic Blur features It also unveiled the very cool quot Guide Frame quot feature that helps visually impaired people take selfies One that s bound to be popular and maybe overused is Cinematic Blur This gives you the same portrait like blurred backgrounds for video that you get in photos helping the subject stand out better It s apparently made possible by the high speed and low latency of the Tensor G chip delivering a quot beautifully shallow depth of field quot Google said nbsp GoogleAlso new is Photo Unblur essentially a version of the Pixel s Face Unblur feature that works on any type of photo ーand will only be available on Pixel devices for now With just a few taps you can remove blur and other issues from older photos potentially giving them a new life Next up is an update to Real Tone first introduced last year that improves skin tones on a diverse range of people Google has added thousands of new sample images to its dataset to improve the feature for a wider range of skin tones And now it works with Google s low light Night Sight mode and Portrait mode as well nbsp GoogleThe Super Res Zoom meanwhile doubles the optical resolution at a given zoom range while letting you zoom up to x It fixes potential noise by quot remosaicing quot the image to maximize sharpness The result is a full megapixel resolution photo at a x on the Pixel and x on the Pixel Pro The aim is to provide the highest quality across the zoom range rather than having only certain zoom levels x x etc looking good Zoom stabilization is another new feature that effectively upscales wide zoom photos while providing steadier shots than you d get on It also added bit HDR capture letting you capture brighter and more colorful photos and take best advantage of the HDR display And finally for the Pixel Pro Google introduced a new Macro focus that takes advantage of the wider field of view to allow for improved closeup shots nbsp Finally Guided Frame is a new accessibility feature that tells visually impaired users exactly where to move their device to take a well composed selfie The voice coach will ask you to go up down or to the side until its AI believes you re in the best place to shoot Along with True Tone it s one of the new features Google revealed to burnish its accessibility and inclusivity Apart from that both the Pixel and Pixel Pro still come with MP main and MP wide cameras with the Pixel Pro using the same MP telephoto camera as before Both the pro and regular models have the same MP front camera compared to the megapixel camera on the Pixel Pro nbsp	2022-10-06 15:07:18
