published at hungvu tech How to back up Microsoft with Synology Active Backup Synology has been a strong player in the Network attached Storage NAS market for home users and small businesses due to their user friendly solutions As a mature platform Synology NAS features can be greatly expanded via the Package Center One of the popular packages is Active Backup for Microsoft In this article I will go over the necessary steps to create the first backup of your Microsoft cloud services on DiskStation Manager DSM Active Backup for Microsoft provides a centralized interface coming with the auto discovery service for efficient data backup and management the continuous backup mode for minimizing the risk of data loss Active Backup for Microsoft Portal for easy restoration and so much more Synology Inc Before we startAs of the time of writing only the following Microsoft plans are supported Business Basic Standard Premium Enterprise F E E Education A A and Exchange Online Plan Plan Make sure your NAS device is compatible with Active Backup for Microsoft The compatibility list can be found here The tutorial assumes you already had some experience with DSM beforehand Active Backup for Microsoft is at version other major versions can require different steps Step Install Active Backup for Microsoft Active Backup for Microsoft is a free add on package so it does not come by default on a freshly installed DSM Download and install the package An online Synology account is required to activate the package Step Create a backup destinationGo to Control Panel gt Shared Folder Press Create and enter the folder name Set other checkboxes to your preference then press Next Choose Encrypted this shared folder and provide your preferred key This is sensitive information so store it securely and you will need the key to decrypt and mount the Shared Folder for future uses The key can be generated using a password generator or other key generator libraries Press Next and enable data checksum for advanced data integrity Do not enable file compression or else encryption will be disabled Press Next to download the encryption key file key and finish creating a Shared Folder Set user permission to the Shared Folder according to your preference How about file level encryption Sensitive data must always be encrypted so there is more protection against malicious actors e g thieves hackers etc However encrypting an Active Backup for Microsoft also applicable for Google Workspace might be confusing due to the lack of official documentation from Synology File level encryption is introduced in Active Backup for Business s latest version a different package not for Microsoft and Google Workspace Therefore encryption happens in a backup task not a Shared Folder level However file level encryption is still not presented in neither Active Backup for Microsoft nor Active Backup for Google Workspace so we can only rely on Shared Folder encryption Why should you create an encrypted Shared Folder at the beginning Here is an interesting point Synology uses eCryptFS as an encryption mechanism for its Shared Folder so there is English characters or Asian CJK characters limitation on a file or folder name not the whole path length Therefore enabling encryption on a non encrypted Shared Folder with long name files will cause an error However if the Shared Folder is encrypted since the beginning backup tasks can still run and store files to the destination normally However the long file name is appended with name too long at the end This is not just a visual presentation in the Synology portal as the downloaded from NAS file also has name too long at the end The Shared Folder can be un mounted encrypted and mounted decrypted without any trouble I reached out to Synology support to ask about this behavior and they confirm it is normal Step Create a backup task for Microsoft servicesOpen Active Backup for Microsoft package and go to Task List Choose Create a backup task then press Next Choose your preferred Microsoft Endpoint If your subscription is directly from the Microsoft website then the choice is Microsoft Set up a certificate password treat it as creating an encryption key in step then press Next Synology will require you to sign in as a Microsoft tenant admin with enough privilege to provide consent on behalf of your organization The picture below shows the permission granted to an application created by Synology on Azure to perform backup tasks You will be asked to confirm the NAS IP address As a NAS it should have a static IP address but if that somehow changes down the road Active Backup for Business allows connection edits but that does not seem to be the case for Microsoft and for Google Workspace so you need to recreate a task Fill out Task name Backup destination encrypted Shared Folder you just created Other settings are according to your preference Active Backup for Microsoft allows backup for tenant users groups sites teams auto discovery and more You can selectively choose what to back up Microsoft Teams backup requires access to Protected APIs so you have to request Microsoft for access Instruction for the request can be found here If this is not satisfied Microsoft Teams backup will fail That said it is great that the Active Backup task can be partially failed without creating any blockage to the flow Press Next to select backup and retention policy Personally I preferred to have a physical air gap system so my choice is to have Manual backup task and Keep all versions policies Confirm the summary then press Apply to finish the task creation Now that the backup task is created it should appear in Task List and you can monitor its status or reconfigure certain settings along the line Wrap upIn this article we learned about how to set up Active Backup for Microsoft v in DSM Remember different package versions might change how the process is but in general it should stay Today we will take a closer look at how we can use the MSDO GitHub action and how it integrates with Microsoft Defender for DevOps MSDO installs configures and runs the latest versions of static analysis tools It is data driven with portable configurations that enable deterministic execution across multiple environments The MSDO toolkit can output and convert results to Static Analysis Results Interchange Format SARIF which can display the results in your repository on GitHub MSDO integrates with Microsoft Defender for DevOps which enables a central console as part of Microsoft Defender for Cloud to provide security teams DevOps insights across multi pipeline environments such as GitHub and Azure DevOps These insights can then be correlated with other contextual cloud security intelligence to prioritise remediation in code and apply consistent security guardrails throughout the application lifecycle The benefits of Defender for DevOps available through Defender for Cloud are Unified visibility into DevOps security posture Visibility of rich security insights to help strengthen cloud resource configurations throughout the development lifecycle Prioritise GitHub repository to Microsoft Defender for Cloud Log into the Azure portal Navigate to Microsoft Defender for Cloud gt Environment Settings Select Add environment and then Select GitHub Enter a name select your subscription resource group and region Select Plans Select Next Authorize connection and Authorize the GitHub connection after reviewing the permission request After Authorizing click on Install under Install Defender for DevOps app You can install the Defender for DevOps app on All or Individual repositories as necessary Select Next Review and create Review the information and select Create NOTE You will see the GitHub connector under Microsoft Defender for Cloud gt Environment Settings If you only added one repository and wanted to later change and add onboard more repositories onto the same Defender for DevOps plan you can do so by navigating to your GitHub Settings gt Applications After installing Defender for DevOps on the selected repositories you want to onboard they will be integrated with Microsoft Defender for Cloud and insights will be accessible from the DevOps Security dashboard under Defender for Cloud in the Azure portal Next we will look at the MSDO GitHub action and see how we can use certain tools and populate the dashboard with rich security insights about our code Configuring the MSDO GitHub action with Terrascan The following examples can also be found on my MSDO Lab GitHub page As mentioned MSDO features a few different tools I will cover some of the other tools in a future blog post but I want to concentrate on a specific tool today called Terrascan which is part of the MSDO toolkit Terrascan is a static code analyzer for Infrastructure as Code IaC Let s take a look at an example on how we can use MSDO integration with Defender for DevOps to get security insights and detect compliance and security violations in a Terraform configuration to mitigate risk before provisioning cloud infrastructure On my GitHub repository under the path Foundation I have the following terraform configuration that simply builds a Resource Group and a Key Vault Data Sources data azurerm client config current Create a Resource Groupresource azurerm resource group rg name var resource group name location var location tags var tags Create a Key Vault for the Resource Groupresource azurerm key vault kv name lower var key vault name random integer kv num result location azurerm resource group rg location resource group name azurerm resource group rg name enable rbac authorization var use rbac mode enabled for disk encryption true tenant id data azurerm client config current tenant id soft delete retention days purge protection enabled false sku name standard tags var tags resource random integer kv num min max Let s take a look at how we can use Terrascan using the MSDO GitHub action to scan our terraform code and how the results will be displayed on the Defender for DevOps dashboard in the Azure portal Sign in to GitHub and select a repository you added earlier to Defender for DevOps on which you want to configure the MSDO GitHub action Select Actions gt set up a workflow yourself Give the workflow file a name For example msdevopssec yml Copy and paste the following sample action workflow into the Edit new file tab My Microsoft Security DevOps MSDO Terrascan workflowname MSDO windows lateston workflow dispatch running the workflow you can review the steps Note that the MSDO toolkit is installed and runs Terrascan against the repo path Foundation containing the terraform IaC configurations Let s take a outputtype sarif terrascan iacdir Foundation How to configure different MSDO analyzersThere are a few ways configure tool inputs By creating a gdnconfig file to save configurations Great for reuse between team members and local remote runs Can save multiple tool configurations in a single file to run all configurations By using environment variables Great for quick configurations in build pipelines They follow the format GDN lt ToolName gt lt ArgumentId gt where GDN is optional and ToolName and ArgumentId are defined by the tool integration file to gdntool As you can see in the workflow step we have specified the tool inputs for Terrascan are defined as environment variables on the action itself e g steps uses microsoft security devops action env lt key gt lt value gt You can be found here terrascan options Defender for DevOps DashboardAs mentioned MSDO closely integrates with Microsoft Defender for Cloud and has its own DevOps Security dashboard to review and observe security insights across DevOps and your codebase In the Azure portal navigate to Microsoft Defender for Cloud select the DevOps Security pane and then click on the GitHub connector Notice there are some Unhealthy recommendations to resolve detected by MSDO infrastructure as code scanning Terrascan Let s navigate back to the GitHub repository select the security tab and Code Scanning Because we selected the output format to be SARIF and used another action in our workflow github codeql action upload sarif v to upload the SARIF file we can now see the MSDO Terrascan results and issues that needs to be resolved directly from the repository Security tab Code scanning severitiesYou can also define code scanning severities which should cause a pull request check to fail to prevent security issues from being commited into your code by accident This can be configured under the GitHub repository Settings gt Code security and analysis Once the IaC security findings are resolved you will notice that the status of the recommendation has changed from Unhealthy to Healthy Stay tuned for my next blog post where we will use MSDO in Azure DevOps repositories instead of GitHub and use the 海外TECH	Engadget	Apple store workers go on strike in Australia	https://www.engadget.com/apple-store-strike-australia-151913145.html?src=rss	Apple store workers go on strike in AustraliaApple isn t just facing unionization efforts among its retail workers The New York Timesreports about store staff went on strike for an hour Tuesday after negotiations for better pay and working conditions hit an impasse On Wednesday they refused to provide a mix of services that included repairing AirPods and managing deliveries nbsp The striking employees showed support for unions and called for a range of improvements including the higher income and schedules with two consecutive days off Apple had offered staff a higher minimum wage of AUD about US in talks with unions but the Shop Distributive and Allied Employees Association union called that a real wage cut that didn t account for inflation That group wants a AUD US wage roughly equivalent to what American workers get It s also difficult to have weekends with the current scheduling the workers said As in the US there are allegations Apple is using anti union tactics The Association claims Apple interfered with labor organizers trying to survey employees ahead of negotiations Apple has supposedly tried to rush a vote on the deal Apple has denied rushing the vote and said part time workers could specify four or more days of availability They also get schedules two weeks in advance In a statement to The Times the iPhone maker maintains that it s among the highest paying companies in Australia and has made many improvements to its benefits The strike and task refusals were spurred in part by labor action in the US There workers at an increasing number of Apple stores have tried to join unions with varying success Team members at a Towson Maryland store managed to unionize but reports surfaced that Apple was supposedly withholding benefits while negotiations with the union took place At many stores the company has apparently pushed anti union talking points that suggested formal representation could make things worse There s no certainty American employees will strike like their Australian counterparts but it s evident that the outcry is getting louder	2022-10-19 15:19:13
