Google Official Google Blog 10 new reasons to love Messages by Google https://blog.google/products/messages/10-new-messages-features/ new reasons to love Messages by GoogleWe use messaging apps to feel connected without the headache of needing to know what phone or network we re on That is why our focus with Messages by Google is to help you build connections It s also built around RCS a modern messaging protocol that supports richer text features higher resolution images and videos and enables end to end encryption With RCS we can give everyone a secure and modern messaging experience We continue to advocate for RCS across the industry so key players GetTheMessage and make the experience better for everyone As RCS adoption accelerates we re doing what s possible to improve messaging between Android and iOS like adding support for reactions This builds on a suite of features that you already love like an organized inbox that separates personal and business messages the ability to share sharper videos and scheduled messages And we re doing even more Here are ways Messages is evolving with safer smarter and more modern features Ever been in a chat where the conversation with friends is flowing and you re catching up with tons of messages Soon you ll be able to respond to an individual message in a conversation when RCS is enabled making it easier to respond to a specific message without breaking the flow Earlier this year we started displaying emoji reactions from iPhone users on your Android phone Now we re taking a step further by letting you react to SMS texts from iPhone users with emoji as well While RCS is the ultimate solution we re doing what we can to help Android users have a way to consistently react to messages We re making voice messages more accessible Using machine learning Voice Message Transcription auto transcribes the message so you can access it with ease Say you re in a crowded space and get an audio message from a loved one transcripts will let you “view the audio like you would a traditional text message In addition to Pixel and Pixel Pro this feature is also available on Pixel Pixel A Pixel Pro Samsung Galaxy S and the Galaxy Fold Phone showing the replies feature where a user can respond to a specific message in an RCS conversation Respond to an individual message in a conversationPhone showing reactions where voice messages transcribed into text Reminders are now included directly in Messages to help you remember important moments without navigating across several apps on your phone Remind yourself to call Mom on her birthday or schedule that appointment during regular business hours And if you save someone s birthday or anniversary in your phone s contacts app you ll get a gentle reminder about them when you open the Messages app You can now watch YouTube videos within Messages without ever leaving the app So when someone sends you a YouTube link you can quickly watch and respond without the hassle of switching back and forth If you are like me and always scrolling through messages endlessly to find the address that your friend sent you a while back we got you covered Messages will now intelligently suggest you “star messages that contain texts like addresses door codes and phone numbers to help you easily keep track and quickly find important conversations Phone showing the reminders feature where a user is selecting a time to remind themselves to respond to a text message The screen shows options for the user to select to set the reminder for one hour later today 海外TECH DEV Community Why Google Build Zanzibar ? https://dev.to/egeaytin/why-google-build-zanzibar--3kp5 Why Google Build Zanzibar In this article we ll examine Zanzibar which is the global authorization system used at Google for handling authorization for hundreds of its services and products including YouTube Drive Calendar Cloud and Maps Google published Zanzibar back in and in a short time it gained attention quickly In fact some companies like Airbnb and Carta started to shift their legacy authorization structure to Zanzibar style systems Additional to shifts from large tech companies Zanzibar based solutions increased over the time All disclosure Permify is an authorization system based on Zanzibar In this article we ll look up what differs Zanzibar from other permission systems and why companies have been adopting Zanzibar style solutions ever since the paper was published Reading the original paper is quite enjoyable but I want to simplify the Zanzibar paper and explain the why what and how s in a nutshell I love to start with the reason So let s look up why Zanzibar is needed by Google Why is Zanzibar Needed So as we established Google uses Zanzibar for its product to handle authorization But what is Authorization Simply It is the process of controlling who can do own or access a system in an application Authorization systems can branch off due to application and user needs Eventually when things grow authorization is a hard piece to solve for various reasons We wrote a post about why authorization is hard in core aspects modeling architecture and enforcement The problem with modeling is most of the time it starts simple but gets uglier over time due to growth and never ending user requirements In particular It s hard to create permissions for ever changing environments with multiple different use cases of individual applications In Google s case they have a large number of applications and services with different permission needs Drive has its own sharing authorization Youtube has private public video access controls Google Cloud mostly relies on role based access control RBAC etc So Google needs a flexible modeling structure where they can create and extend combinations of different access control approaches in a common place About enforcement it s challenging because it happens in so so many places And access checks usually contain data from different services or applications So it s becoming harder to make decisions fast and reliable Access checks between resources from one application in another is very common in Google For instance Google Calendar might have the right authorization for Google Meets So for Google It s important to have a unified authorization system that makes it easier for applications to interoperate This interpolation goes more depth from enforcement to architectural problems actually A common architectural approach of handling authorization is building a permission system for each individual application that is connected directly with the database Since authorizations is a system critical part and a single point of failure an error or just a simple mistake on authorization systems can cause security frauds showing false positive or false negative results to the users Moreover when you have multiple applications maintaining multiple authorization mechanisms it becomes harder And due to this generally these systems are designed as abstract entities a library or a centralized engine that cater to many individual applications and services Google also took this approach before building Zanzibar They have a common authorization library that is used across their applications and services as a centralized permission engine “One permission system to rule them all mantra is great and abstracting permission systems from application has one big tradeoff These libraries or permission engines don t store data They just behave as an engine to manage functionality such as performing access checks And on these functionalities there is a trade off and a down side For instance in order to make an access check and compute a decision you need to load the authorization data and relations from the database and other services In this case there is a huge downside in terms of performance and scalability Loading and processing authorization data is especially painful given the fact that Google computes billions of access checks which come from different environments and applications from worldwide When you count that these checks have to be fast consistent and available all times So that a unified authorization system without the data management is error prone at Google scale Google needed a solution that is super fast secure and scalable while providing consistency and reliability across all applications Actually lets see major goals of Zanzibar system with quotes from the paper Correctness It must ensure consistency of access con trol decisions to respect user intentions Flexibility It must support a rich set of access control policies as required by both consumer and enterprise applications ‍Low latency It must respond quickly because authorization checks are often in the critical path of user interactions Low latency at the tail is particularly important for serving search results which often require tens to hundreds of checks ‍High availability It must reliably respond to requests because in the absence of explicit authorizations client services would be forced to deny their users access ‍Large scale It needs to protect billions of objects shared by billions of users It must be deployed around the globe to be near its clients and their end users We ll examine how Zanzibar achieves these goals But first let s understand what Zanzibar is What is Zanzibar Zanzibar is an authorization service that stores permissions as ACL styled relationships and performs access decisions according to these relations Zanzibar unifies authorization to serve individual applications and services Unified authorization system has various advantages as we mentioned above But abstracting the authorization from the core application has one massive challenge data management Not surprisingly Zanzibar has a unique way of solution to it Data ModelAbstracting authorization data eliminates data loading issues on each enforcement action Think of a simple access control question “Can User X view document Y In the traditional way we had to check our policy or access rules and then need to load the necessary data for the decision In Zanzibar you already have all of the required information stored as relational tuples to make decisions quickly When using Zanzibar you tell Zanzibar about the activities that are related to authorization data Let s assume we have a rule that enforces “only document creators can view the document Sounds reasonable In that case you need to feed Zanzibar with actions in your system about document creation Such as “user X created document Y “user Z created document T etc Then Zanzibar stores this information as a relational tuple in the centralized data source Alon Yao one of the software engineers in Airbnb wrote a post about how Airbnb moved its legacy authorization system to a Zanzibar styled system called Himenji And here is how they approached synchronization of authorization data We created Himeji a centralized authorization system based on Zanzibar which is called from the data layer It stores permissions data and performs the checks as a central source of truth Instead of fanning out at read time we write all permissions data when resources are mutated We fan out on the writes instead of the reads given our read heavy workload Relational tuples are similar to individual ACL collections of object user or object object relations and take the form of “user U has relation R to object O Zanzibar represents of the form of these relational tuples as ⟨tuple⟩ ⟨object⟩ ⟨relation⟩ ⟨user⟩⟨object⟩ ⟨namespace⟩ ⟨object id⟩⟨user⟩ ⟨user id⟩ ⟨userset⟩⟨userset⟩ ⟨object⟩ ⟨relation⟩Although it seems complex at first glance actually It s quite straightforward Let s deconstruct a tuple “object relation user In our document example when user created document you need to send the object and the subject relation If the Zanzibar system were a person you d say “Hey Zanzibar user is owner of document And then this data stored as document owner user Users can also be a user set like team members This allows nested group relations in access decisions As an example think a system where we want to group members can viewer relation with a document the relation tuple can be created according to this is doc viewer group member So the Zanzibar derived system unifies and stores a collection of relational tuples as authorization data Access Control ChecksConsidering a scaled system like Google as you might expect there will be tons of relational tuples created Currently Zanzibar manages trillions of tuples with thousands of namespaces in it So all of these relational tuples and authorization model combines and build up a relations graph which is mainly used for the access control check In Zanzibar evaluating access decisions operate as a walkthrough of this directed graph For instance if we ask “does user is owner to the document and if the owner relation between user and document can be accessible on the directed graph Zanzibar concludes that user is authorized How can this relation be stored and be present in the graph Simply the application client should send the data to writeAPI when user creates a document We ll look up write function in below FunctionalityZanzibar has five core methods these are read write watch check and expand Expand and check are authorization related functions Others are more related with authorization data and relational tuples If we need to give a quick explanation for each method Read which allows for directly querying the graph data it can be used to filter authorization data relational tuples that are stored Write basically allows you to write relational tuples to the data storage In a standard relational database based application which implements Zanzibar style system relational tuples can write into both the application s database and the Zanzibar system within the same flow Watch as we can understand the functionality from its name it used to watch the relation tuple changes in the graph data Check probably the most obvious one Check is used in enforcement In a Zanzibar based system you can check access in the form of “Can subject S have permission P on resource R The subject and resource should be specified The check engine will calculate the decision by walking through to the graph of relations Expand used to improve observability and reasonability of access permissions It returns user set which takes form of in Zanzibar in a tree format of given resource permissions Data ConsistencyZanzibar is a service that is constantly being accessed with millions of access checks so it must be secure And when thinking about this kind of system where data is actively managed security is mainly related to stored and managed data consistency And these inconsistent data can cause false negative or false positive decision results on authorization checks So if some schema update happens or relations change then all applications that use Zanzibar should update their cache according to it to prevent false positive or false negative results Zanzibar avoids this problem with an approach of snapshot reads Basically it ensures that enforcement is evaluated at a consistent point of time to prevent inconsistency Zanzibar team developed tokens called Zookies that consist of a timestamp which is compared in access checks to ensure that the snapshot of the enforcement is at least as fresh as the resource version s timestamp Providing Low Latency at High ScaleZanzibar stores more than two trillion ACLs and performs millions of authorization checks per second Although these numbers are huge It is kind of expectable when thinking of Zanzibar used by Google products like Youtube Drive Calendar and more Since the products that are using Zanzibar are distributed enforcement for any object can come from anywhere in the world So that Zanzibar doesn t spread ACL data geographically Therefore Zanzibar replicates all ACL data in tens of geographically distributed data centers and distributes load across thousands of servers around the world More specifically in the paper there is a section called Experience see which mentions that Zanzibar “distributes this load across more than servers organized in several dozen clusters around the world using Spanner which is Google s scalable multi version globally distributed and synchronously replicated database It is no doubt that Zanzibar applies various techniques to hit the low latency and high availability goals in this globally distributed environment There is a serious cache mechanism that works which allows to get results from the local replicated data More about caching from the paper It handles hot spots on normalized data by caching final and intermediate results and by deduplicating simultaneous requests It also applies techniques such as hedging requests and optimizing computations on deeply nested sets with limited denormalization And results More than of the access checks responded in milliseconds and has maintained more than availability for the year period ConclusionGoogle s Zanzibar has a major goal of creating a planet scaled permission system that is fast secure and available all time As Permify an open source authorization service that is based on Zanzibar we re trying to make Zanzibar available to everyone to use and benefit in their applications and services 2022-10-20 15:36:43

海外TECH Engadget VanMoof's new A5 and S5 e-bikes are harder to steal and smoother to ride https://www.engadget.com/vanmoof-ebike-s5-a5-test-ride-pricing-150525845.html?src=rss VanMoof x s new A and S e bikes are harder to steal and smoother to rideIt was a breezy three kilometer ride on VanMoof s A e bike around Battersea Park in London Starting from VanMoof s flagship London store the company s CEO Ties Carlier took the lead He shot off on the more typically framed S while I got to grips with the boost and controls on the VanMoof s new shorter A also A few seconds later I caught up I hadn t broken a sweat My brief test ride around the neighborhood was almost too easy I had briefly ridden VanMoof s e bikes before but its latest generation of e bikes usher in changes across the board The company has tried to make most of the parts on its newest e bikes itself The most significant change might be the removal of the tube based display of the S and X bikes swapping it for a duo of Halo Rings near the buttons on each side One rings the digital cute bell while the other controls boost In addition to indicating battery life it also shows how much the bike s motor is working along with the bike s lock status Anti theft technology and a team of bike hunters E bike security is a significant selling point for VanMoof s bikes Carlier explains that deterring theft is one of the biggest challenges to making “the perfect city bike which has been the company s aim long before it even started designing its first electric bike “A good bike a good ride requires more money he said “With an e bike that s even more true He added that whatever solution companies like VanMoof come up with thieves will get smarter The threat of it getting stolen has put me off from investing substantial money into bikes and has deterred me from e bikes entirely The anti theft technology in the S and A both priced at includes an improved kick lock on the rear wheel In addition the bikes will automatically unlock if they detect the user s phone nearby and riders can otherwise unlock it with a numerical code that you can tap into the left handlebar another instance where the new Halo Rings come into use Mat Smith EngadgetIf someone does manage to steal the S A tampering or breaking which is integrated into the e bike s computer within the tube the lock will first sound an alarm and a short while later immobilize the e bike functions For the thieves then it s just a heavier push bike with a mildly distinctive frame and built in lights that won t work And if you re willing to pay an extra for three years of coverage and that s a fraction of the cost of replacing these plus bikes your VanMoof ride will come with support from a retinue of bike hunters which still sounds cool The e bike transmits its location over G and the hunters are equipped with more fine grain Bluetooth signal detectors to sniff out stolen bikes If your bike goes missing you can mark it as stolen on the VanMoof app and if the hunters can t find it within two weeks the company will replace the bike for you It s peace of mind for sure but it s also yet another subscription The S and A are even more expensive than their predecessors which cost just less than VanMoof s latest rides each cost a increase since they were first revealed The company has also added support for Apple s Find My network but that s more likely to help you locate your bike in a parking lot not track down a thief Mat Smith EngadgetVanMoof s new stepover AThe A model has a lowered step in meaning the bike is smaller and VanMoof believes it gives riders a feeling of being closer to the road VanMoof s premium priced e bikes don t look like typical electric bikes there s no visible battery to begin with but I like the unusually low profile A When I use a bike it s multiple short trips with several stops This step through model felt easier to ride It was more of my thing The S and A come with Wh and Wh batteries respectively With the included charger both take roughly six and a half hours to charge VanMoof teased a fast charger too but pricing is still TBC On a full charge the A can hit around miles on full power or miles on economy power mode Meanwhile the S has a mile range on full power which can be stretched to miles on economy power mode If VanMoof s claims are accurate both bikes should be able to handle plenty of short trips before needing to be plugged in overnight The company also plans to offer a battery expansion pack that should double the bikes range A smoother rideMat Smith EngadgetBoth of the new bikes have upgraded gear shift tech as well I tried a friend s VanMoof S bike and could tell the newer rides had smoother gear transitioning The motor has plenty of pep but the A swaps around three gears incredibly gently It s hard to forget this was a premium e bike While you can t adjust gears yourself it keeps the bike “interface can I call it that simple That s part of the plan VanMoof s Carlier says the company is targeting people who might not consider themselves bike people The challenge is convincing them to invest in an e bike At these prices I d call it an investment And if you re waiting on the company s even pricier high speed e bike the VanMoof V expect to wait a little longer Due to supply issues production has been delayed from fall to late We plan to test out VanMoof s latest bikes more extensively soon Both the A and S are available to order directly from the company with delivery dates currently estimated to be around January and February 2022-10-20
