Responsiveness in Material UI A love hate storyUnder the HoodWell when I started using Material UI I became a fan But as time passes I find that Material UI is not easy to customise Well if you think customisation is not that important my friend you should read this story New currency in software developmentComing back customisation becomes a considerable bottleneck with material UI existing components but somehow we managed it in iHateReading Until we get bigger problems called breakpoints and responsiveness I know we are new and the problem might seem a cakewalk but everyone gets stuck on the first attempt and during the first learning Responsiveness ーHate amp Love StoryActually if you asked me personally the most boring part of the front is writing CSS or specifically handling responsiveness Even the CSS didn t leave me when I get into react native development I thought before getting deep dive into mobile app development that we don t have to handle many edge cases for responsiveness but I was wrong over there also The hate story begins with our website iHateReading as we are facing a lot of issues with UI glitches in all kinds of devices Some phones can t have proper alignment and desktops and large screens all are having some or other kind of UI or CSS glitches The approach we use to follow to solve the issues is addressing them one by one Hate amp more HateI mean we tried to add media queries edge cases and bla bla whatnot else But how here and there some kind of screens get broken or not fixed or some devices were so rigid in not showing proper UI as expected Love StorySo we move back to basics after hustling for a long time Yesterday before changing our website UI we thought of finding a proper responsiveness solution Key Step ーWe end up reading Material UI documentation again So I googled out the Material UI breakpoints I found the dedicated page documentation about it and how to use it properly Earlier when I started with Material UI breakpoints we use to deal with using down and up methods to add media queries for multiple devices That is where we were facing problems of not handling all edge cases because sometimes the card component will look the same or have the same width on phones such as Ipad and on desktops such as MacBooks That is ofcourse not the expected behaviour every designer design the components differently for phone and desktops They are brothers or siblings very less or a rare chance that they will be twins So when we design the look for phones and desktops we decided to make them siblings but not twins and change their looks using props and media queries But breakpoints methods such as “down and “up for material UI were too much pain HackMaterial UI provides makeStyles methods to add media queries using theme objects For example import makeStyles from material ui core const styles makeStyles theme gt root width margin auto theme breakpoints down sm width Look at the root styles in the above code we add a breakpoint for devices of the size below sm that is px Here is the dimension mapping for each prop in Material UI xs px sm px md px lg px xl pxWell this s quite straightforward so why we were facing problems The issue exists between and px where most of the desktops and devices exist For that we use another breakpoints method called between And this is the most powerful method that saves a lot of time in writing multiple media queries Now devices that exist between and px can be given CSS using between method Look at the code below instead of adding max width and min width media queries we simply use the text sm md and our responsiveness will be handled import makeStyles from material ui core const styles makeStyles theme gt root width margin auto theme breakpoints between sm md width theme breakpoints between xs sm width theme breakpoints between md lg width theme breakpoints between lg xl width ConclusionMaterial UI provides tonnes of components and now we have a way to handle responsiveness easily Another thing about the customisation is that Material UI has released MUIBase ーHeadless UI library using Material UI or Unstyled Material UI library Meaning we will only use the MUIBase UI components and provide our own theming system or styles Highly customisable according to designs The world is heading towards headless UI so material UI is also thinking in the same direction Headless UI New trend in frontend UI librariesKeep developingShreyiHateReading |

Some trouble with a rental car companyHey everyone sorry for the bad title i really didnt know how to better describe this Im kind of in a mess and would be very grateful if some people could help me with this So the other day i rented a car from a car rental company It wasnt a big rental company like Toyota or Nippon but a smaller one though im not dropping any names here I rented a somewhat older car from them and my mother paid for it with her credit card because it was a present for me Rental went smooth car had some scratches and bumps but its an older car so I didnt care I had to sign a NOC non operational charge which stated that if I damaged the car in any way I have to pay Yen When I came back the car was in the same state as it was before with the exact same scratches and bruises The staff asked me to wait a bit and after a few minutes they came back and were like quot Oh there is a crack in the front bumper you have to pay the NOC fee of Yen quot They showed me it and sure enough there was a small crack in the front bumper which was however also there before Not to mention that the entire front bumper had a few scratches and cracks again its an older car Anyway they say I have to pay I refuse yada yada and then sure enough they basically say to me they will use the credit card information I gave them while reserving the car So basically they booked off Yen of my Moms credit card They then hand me a new bill now listing Yen and ask me to sign it At that point i stood up and went straight to the nearest Koban I called my Mom but it was AM in Europe so there wasn t much she could do Well I went to the police station had a long talk with the officer the officer called the rental car company they repeat their story that I had damaged the front bumper but they also told the officer that I agreed paying the Yen and that I even signed the new Bill I was obviously shocked because I never agreed and never signed anything The officer told me that it was a civil matter but still agreed to send a police officer to the store to look at the document that I supposedly signed because I insisted that I didn t sign anything The document that had my signature on it was a forgery a bad one at that It looked liked someone just wrote my first and last name with block letters Obviously the staff faked my signature I showed the policemen a few of my documents my passport my license my ID card which all had my genuine signature on it and he basically said that he can t decide if the signature is a forgery or not because I claim its a forgery and the guy from the store claim its not Amazing Basically we had a small discussion where I asked the policemen if hes gonna do anything about the whole situation and he said its not something he can decide about and I should just call my card company and withdraw the payment although he did file a report Which is good for nothing So no luck with the police Obviously my mother canceld the transaction on her credit card but now the big question is Am I in trouble This rental company belives i owe them Yen What are the chances they will sue me I have no idea how debt collection and all that stuff works so what could in theory happen and what is likely to happen I apologise for grammatical mistakes and the long text Thanks in advance for any help submitted by u DarkCrusader to r japanlife link comments |
