Creating an Asynchronous Ingestion Pattern Following Mia Platform Fast Data ArchitectureThis post explores an asynchronous pattern for ingesting data from legacy systems collecting it into projections and aggregating it into single views The purpose of this solution is to decouple the source systems where data is stored from the external channels that request dataーensuring both offloading of source systems and making data available to channels and in near real time The proposed solution is a simplification of the high end architecture of Mia Platform Fast Data |

DEV Community Satisfaction Survey Results! |
https://dev.to/devteam/dev-community-satisfaction-survey-results-485f
|
DEV Community Satisfaction Survey Results A couple months back we launched the DEV Community Satisfaction Survey with an announcement here Take the DEV Community Satisfaction Survey dev to staff for The DEV Team・Aug ・ min read meta announcements feedback The survey officially closed on September th with a total of participants We re now ready to share some of the results with you all Let s dive in TL DR of folks feel satisfied with the content they see in their home feed while are unsatisfied The top types of posts people currently enjoy are Programming tutorials Discussions Personal stories The top types of subjects folks like to read are Web development Backend development Frontend development of folks feel safe amp encouraged to share their thoughts while of people feel protected by moderators and the Code of Conduct Raw Quantitative Data “How satisfied are you with DEV answers Avg Rating “Are you satisfied with the content you see in your home relevant feed answers are satisfied are unsatisfied other “Do you feel safe and encouraged to share your thoughts and feelings with the DEV community answers do feel safe amp encouraged do not and other “Do you feel protected by our team of moderators and our Code of Conduct answers say yes say no “Are there any specific areas of DEV that you feel we could improve upon open answer responses “Do you feel satisfied with the number of emails we send you answers say it s perfect but no more yes but could see more no receive too many other “Have you ever participated in a DEV hackathon and if so did you enjoy it answers yes and enjoyed it yes but didn t enjoy it no but with the right topic they would no and no interest no and found promotion to be off putting other “What do you know about CodeNewbie Community answers nothing is aware a member but not active an active member and enjoy it “Check the box beside the activities that you commonly perform on DEV answersRead posts Leave reactions Browse articles in home feed Write posts Comment on posts Follow tags Follow users Search for articles using the DEV search bar Follow organizations Other “What types of posts do you enjoy on DEV answersProgramming tutorials Discussions Personal stories News Maker tutorials help posts asking for help helping others Other “What types of subjects do you like to read post about on DEV answersWeb development Backend development Frontend development Application development Career development Developer lifestyle Discussions Data Science Other Noteworthy Long Responses “How satisfied are you with DEV I rarely look at my feed I generally visit dev when I get a digest email Some of the feed is good but even with weighting it could be better and lots the same things appear “ The topics I follow aren t very active so it s not really DEV that is responsible for me not seeing a lot of content It s fine I feel like I got more out of the feed years back when I was a new developer and actively looking to grow my knowledge These days I don t see a lot of value in spending time on the home feed and when I do check out articles a lot of time I ll find low quality JS articles with incomplete information Sometimes I see repeated content overall content is Good Satisfied but need more There are great posts from time to time but it s so difficult for me to find them because of all the clickbaity or half assed posts I feel there are so many very self centered and confident men there now When I started on Dev I feel like there were so many queer folks and women posting what happened to that Yes I am satisfied with the content you are showing but I want that it shows relevant content not promotion content As in my home feed I will see both content like simple content amp promotion contents Mostly satisfied I just wish I could toggle off posts in languages I don t speak and low quality posts I would love to be able to add negative weight to subject I don t care even if they mention tags I follows…Without following them of course “Do you feel safe and encouraged to share your thoughts and feelings with the DEV community It often does not make sense I do not fear the trolls but I think it is too many people with very little experience of the time I do but there is a small amount of discussion that isn t constructive towards discussion I try to nip those early but some have required blocking “ I had one negative experience in all these years or years an unfriendly interaction with another member which got a bit out of hand and both of us got a slap on the wrist even though I was fully convinced that I was in the right never mind it can happen Just like any other community DEV has its trolls seeking self affirmation mostly by diminishing the others with fallacies and teasing Even so they seem to be less common here which is somehow an encouragement safe but not encouraged I don t want my account to be connected to Git or any other public account I want a degree of anonymity I don t usually comment but the comments I ve read from others seem open minded and welcoming “ Yes I feel safe and encouraged by the DEV staff and users with more dev experience No I don t feel safe and encouraged by the tech bros who all of a sudden discovered DEV It depends I feel it s safe to share thoughts if they re strictly about tech but if there s for example even a little mention of gender equality I m afraid what the response will be I ve experienced myself and seen in other posts how rude some community members get when you talk about gender equality “ Feeling safe is not something I think about I feel it is safe to share but I don t feel comfortable I don t think people want to hear read from seniors “ “Are there any specific areas of DEV that you feel we could improve upon Podcast I can t pick out everyone that engages with my content The sign up process why do I have to have an account on one of several other platforms to create one here GitHub MAYBE I could understand since it s developers talking to developers but still But Twitter Really The search is crap Frankly replacing it with a site dev to Google Search would be an immediate improvement before it can be replaced by something better There seems to be a lot more spam or low quality posts in general It s a little frustrating and makes DEV less valuable for me Sorting comments by date Option to share Badges on social platforms Clearly too many web dev related topics in the newsletter This IS sad Why is mostly webdev featured Other topics deserve that spot as well Ease for searching that you don t follow dark mode should be openly visualize give us a way to exclude content tags Relevant feed should take in account my expert level and my list of tags with weight I want to avoid seeing JavaScript At all Your extreme WOKEism Make DEV free of politics please I think the number is appropriate but in general the content quality is appropriate for more novice junior or mid career devs with very little content for senior and above Maybe emails tiered to post experience levels Getting feeds from Hashnode working so I don t have to manually crosspost Why Dev doesn t utilize the whole available space on my inch monitor And on my inch monitor it s even worse It seems like just a website made for tablet centered on the screen Because of this most of the time I ve to horizontally scroll code snippets and the editor looks real messy Please do something to fix this Dev to is a platform for discussion among developers help posts and even post tutorials But It would be great if it had a discord channel for any queries and instant feedback It would be great if I can listen to posts with some text to speech tool like or …e g medium com uses I think DEV needs a quick tour for new members to learn more about using DEV Surfacing high quality content For most of my time on DEV I was only following tags and becoming increasingly disappointed with the content Only after reading discussion posts on this issue did I learn good content is only surfaced by finding and following high quality writers Perhaps more tools for orgs to foster their communities within Dev I see some orgs like Strapi posting but there could be other aspects that may be worth centralizing in Dev like governance questions discussions “ “Do you feel satisfied with the number of emails we send you I recently unsubscribed mainly due to the reason stated above content is great for novice junior or mid career engineers but that s not my case so I get little value from the email Never the less the number is appropriate I think I have my account configured so I only get an email when I get a notification which is perfect I don t like marketing emails It s not that too many but the notifications can become problematic Fortunately it can be disabled but more granularity would be appreciated Yes of course But maybe integrate more images to make people want to click on the link and read more I don t think we should receive as many mail as we do…Ok I ticked the boxes because the forem android app simply provides no notifications no matter how I set it up But I think you should find a way to allow people to group them on a h delay We don t need much sometimes “Have you ever participated in a DEV hackathon and if so did you enjoy it I don t see the benefit in my case I have won multiple hackathons in the past No I have not participated in a DEV hackathon due to the age restriction “Check the box beside the activities that you commonly perform on DEV Bookmark amp Reading list I usually browse by latest so I don t get stuck seeing the same articles I m aware I might miss something that way and I do periodically visit the relevant feed but I would prefer to be able to choose which was the default Report users posts too Browse Hackathon submissions “What types of posts do you enjoy on DEV Explanations on theoretical concepts Systems amp at scale stories lessons Kubernetes docker container security topics research topics Jokes just thoughts not tutorials maybe I could call them essays Explaining or examples of new features technologies Best practices soft skills Challenges Tips and tricks “What types of subjects do you like to read post about on DEV Infrastructure and Cloud Terminal emulator development and all around it DevOps and Cloud “ Security Game development Would love UI UX design related posts Serverless and AWS “ RPA Lowcode no code Ethics DEI Blockchain amp Web Web scraping crawling DevRel Accessibility Kotlin Mobile development So What s Next First off we greatly value our community members opinions and are so grateful to those of you who took the time to participate in our survey We re still digging into the results to try and figure out where we can make the most positive impact on the community While we received a fair amount of praise in the answers to our open ended questions amp the general results were quite encouraging we also received some very valid constructive criticism A lot of the feedback y all gave tells us that we need to keep working on our methods for getting y all quality content One area we will definitely continue to hone is our home relevant feed We hope to get better and better at delivering you all content that fits your preferences and skill level We re also going to be thinking outside the box feed for new and interesting ways that we can introduce to help y all discover relevant content At the same time that we improve the reader experience we also plan to continue honing our author tools After all if we expect folks to share great content on DEV we gotta offer up top notch tooling On that note we just recently announced a new feature for scheduling out posts while this feature was not mentioned in survey responses it was the most requested feature in our discussion If you could add one feature to DEV what would it be Y all can expect more improvements along these lines as we look to improve the platform for content creators Lastly y all can definitely expect us to share more of these surveys We ve learned a lot from this experience and look forward to continuing the conversation with you all in future surveys Again many thanks to those of you who filled out the survey and shared your honest feedback with us ーappreciate y all |

How to Deploy Your Medusa Server to Railway’s Free Hosting |
https://dev.to/medusajs/how-to-deploy-your-medusa-server-to-railways-free-hosting-16m8
|
How to Deploy Your Medusa Server to Railway s Free HostingMedusa is an Open Source headless commerce that allows you to build digital commerce through its API with just a few commands You can host Medusa s server on any of your preferred hosting choices and one way to host it is using Railway Railway is a deployment platform where you can provide infrastructure develop that infrastructure locally and then deploy it to the cloud This guide will teach you how to pull your Medusa server code from a GitHub repository and automatically deploy it to Railway You also will learn how to set up Postgres and Redis databases for your Medusa server Why Railway Railway helps you ship quickly by removing common developer hurdles With it you can deploy a Medusa server to production without hassle Their tool extends your app with plugins if you need a database create a new service and you are good to go Railway also offers a way to have several environments to test your apps before going to production It scales apps to meet user demand automatically based on load You also get an automatic pipeline to make new deployments each time your repositories are updated Lastly their user friendly interface is easy to use so you can do everything in the web app without touching your terminal Railway makes it easy for developers to deploy their applications and go to production quickly PrerequisitesTo follow along with this tutorial you need a working Medusa server application You can follow the quickstart guide to getting started Furthermore your Medusa server should be configured to work with PostgreSQL and Redis You can follow the Configure your Server documentation to learn how to do that You also need a GitHub account that needs to be linked with a Railway account so you can pull your code to make the deployments Setting up a Project on RailwayLet s begin by setting up the project on Railway Create the Postgres DatabaseThe first step is to create a project on Railway with a PostgreSQL database Later on you will connect that database with the Medusa server Log in on the Railway platform go to the dashboard and then click on the New Project button You will be redirected to the new project page Once you are there on the dropdown choose the Provision PostgreSQL option By choosing that option a new database will be created and after a few seconds you will be redirected to the project page where you will see the newly created database You will see a sidebar with some database options if you click on the database card Go to the Connect tab you ll find the Postgres connection URL You ll need to use this in the next section Create the Redis DatabaseThe second step is to add a Redis database to handle the event queues of your Medusa server On to the project view click on the New button then choose the Database option and choose Add Redis After a few seconds you should see a new Redis database added to the project view Click on it to open the database sidebar Then go to the Connect tab to get the Redis Connection URL You ll need the URL in the next section Deploy Medusa ServerThe next step is to prepare the Medusa server to be deployed Go to your Medusa server directory and open your medusa config js file Be sure you ve set your database to use PostgreSQL In medusa config js make the following changes in the exported object module exports projectConfig redis url REDIS URL database url DATABASE URL database type postgres store cors STORE CORS admin cors ADMIN CORS plugins Next delete the Dockerfile file By default Railway will look for it in the root of your repository If there is one it will try to deploy your server using it However for this tutorial the deployment won t be using docker Commit your changes and push them to your remote repository on GitHub Once the repository is ready on GitHub the next step is to connect it to Railway to be able to deploy it Go back to the project view on Railway and click on the New button then choose the GitHub Repo option Choose the Configure GitHub App option to permit Railway to read and pull your code from GitHub Once you give the necessary permissions go back to Railway and you should see your repository displayed on the dropdown If the GitHub repositories are stuck on loading and not showing you might need to delete the project and start over This only happens before you configure your account with GitHub By selecting your Medusa server repo a new app will be deployed and after a couple of minutes you should see a successful deployment Click on the repo app card to check it Until this point you have a Medusa server and a Postgres and Redis databases deployed but the app is not public yet and the server is not connected to the databases That is what you will do in the next section Add Environment VariablesOn the app info sidebar go to the Variables tab and add the following properties PORT JWT SECRET somethingCOOKIE SECRET somethingDATABASE URL lt lt DATABASE URL gt gt REDIS URL lt lt REDIS URL gt gt It s recommended to use other values for JWT SECRET and COOKIE SECRET than something for better security The last properties are the URLs to connect to the databases There you need to add the database URLs that you got when you created the Postgres and Redis databases earlier Note Each time you add a new environment variable a new redeploy is scheduled You can cancel it for the first variables to avoid unnecessary redeploys and only leave it for the last one Change Start CommandNext scroll down on the Settings tab until you get to the Service section On the Start Command field write the next command medusa migrations run amp amp medusa developWith this you are instructing Railway that each time a new redeploy happens first it should run the migrations and then it should start the server on port and bind it to the host This last thing is a Railway requirement to be able to expose the app Expose the App to the InternetThe next step is to make the app available over the internet Go to the Settings tab and click on the Generate Domain button to get a public domain that you can visit to test the app Test itMake sure you seed the database before trying to make requests to any endpoint on your Medusa server To check that your Medusa server is working on the app sidebar go to the Deployments tab and click on the app URL At end of the URL add store products so the URL would be something like this You should get a response with a list of the products on your database If that is the case you have successfully deployed your Medusa server into Railway Make sure to change the URL in your Medusa storefront or admin based on the URL of your server Also add your Admin and storefront URLs to the environment variables on your Medusa server TroubleshootingIf you run into any issues or a problem with your deployed server you can check the logs in your Railway container instance by clicking on Logs in the Deployment tab ConclusionDeploying a Medusa server on Railway is super easy and quick Once you re done you can focus on adding new functionalities to your Medusa server such as custom endpoints services or plugins To push the changes to your server push them to your GitHub repository Railway will detect changes and start a new deployment Your application will then be updated with the new features To learn more about how to customize your store or how you can connect a storefront to your store be sure to check out Medusa s documentation If you have any issues or questions related to Medusa then feel free to reach out to the Medusa team via Discord |

The best budget robot vacuums for 2022 |
https://www.engadget.com/best-budget-robot-vacuums-133030847.html?src=rss
|
The best budget robot vacuums for We all could use a little help keeping our homes clean and now we live in an age where robots are actually capable of lending a mechanical hand Robot vacuums are some of the most ubiquitous smart home gadgets available today with their circular shapes and propensity for bumping into walls While they provide an undeniable convenience they can also be expensive It s not unheard of to drop close to on a high end robot vacuum cleaner But in a change from just a few years ago today there are now plenty of budget robot vacuum options to choose from At Engadget we consider anything under to be cheap in this space and you may be surprised to see how many there are at that price point And if you re new to the world of robot vacuums you may find that one of these budget gadgets does everything you expected and more without sacrificing cleaning performance Engadget s picksBest overall iRobot Roomba Runner up Shark Ion RVBest bang for your buck Anker Eufy RoboVac SAre robot vacuums worth it Friends and family often ask me if new gadgets are “worth it and when it comes to robot vacuums the answer is yes The most important thing they have going for them is autonomy Just turn it on walk away If you re someone who wants to spend as little time as possible cleaning your home ーor just someone who detests vacuuming ーa semi autonomous robotic vacuum is a great investment There are plenty of other good things about them but before we dive in let s consider the biggest trade offs less power less capacity and less flexibility Those first two go hand in hand robot vacuums are much smaller than upright vacuums which leads to less powerful suction They also hold less dirt because their built in bins are a fraction of the size of a standard vacuum canister or bag And while robo vacs are cord free that means they are slaves to their batteries and will require regular recharging When it comes to flexibility robot vacuums do things differently than standard ones You can control some with your smartphone set cleaning schedules and more but robo vacs are primarily tasked with cleaning floors On the flip side their upright counterparts can come with various attachments that let you clean couches stairs light fixtures and other hard to reach places What to look for in a budget robot vacuumValentina Palladino EngadgetWhen looking for the best budget robot vacuum one of the first things you should consider is WiFi connectivity While you may think that s a given on all smart home devices it s not Some of the most affordable modes don t have the option to connect to your home WiFi network If you choose a robot vac like this you won t be able to control it with a smartphone app or with voice commands Another feature that s typically reserved for WiFi connected robots is scheduling because most of them use a mobile app to set cleaning schedules But WiFi incapable vacuums usually come with remote controls that have all the basic functions that companion mobile apps do including start stop and return to dock And if you re concerned about the possibility of hacking a robot vac with no access to your WiFi network is the best option You should also think about the floors in your home Do you have mostly carpet tile laminate hardwood Carpets demand vacuums with more suction power that can collect debris that gets pushed down into nooks and crannies Unfortunately there isn t a universal metric by which suction is measured Some companies provide Pascal Pa levels and generally the higher the Pa the stronger But other companies don t rely on Pa levels and simply say their robots have X times more suction power than other robot vacuums So how can you ensure you re getting a robot vacuum that will adequately clean your floor type Read the product description Look for details about its ability to clean bare floors and carpets and see if it has a “max mode you can use to increase suction If you are given a Pa measurement look for around Pa if you have mostly carpeted floors Size is also important for two reasons clearance and dirt storage Check the specs for the robot s height to see if it can get underneath the furniture you have in your home Most robo vacs won t be able to clean under a couch unless it s a very tall very strange couch but some can get under entryway tables nightstands and the like As for dirt storage look out for the milliliter capacity of the robot s dustbin ーthe bigger the capacity the more dirt the vacuum cleaner can collect before you have to empty it Object detection and cliff sensors are other key features to look out for The former helps the robot vacuum navigate around furniture while it cleans rather than mindlessly pushing its way into it Meanwhile cliff sensors prevent robot vacuums from tumbling down the stairs making them the best vacuum for multi level homes Best overall iRobot Roomba Valentina Palladino EngadgetBoth iRobot and Shark impressed with their affordable robo vacs But we think iRobot s Roomba will be the best budget robot vacuum cleaner for most people thanks to its good cleaning power and easy to use mobile app The Roomba replaced the Roomba last year but aside from an updated exterior it s fundamentally the same vacuum It looks much sleeker now with its new all black design giving it an aesthetic similar to some of the more expensive Roomba models It has three physical buttons on it ーstart dock and spot ーand it connects to WiFi so you can control it via the iRobot app Unfortunately your gets you the vacuum and its necessary parts only so you ll have to pay up immediately when you need a replacement filter or brushes Buy Roomba at Amazon Setting up the Roomba is straightforward Open the companion app and follow the instructions Once it s connected to your home WiFi network you re able to use the app to control the vacuum whenever you don t feel like using the physical buttons However the spot clean function is only available as a button which is a bit of a bummer iRobot s app is one of the biggest selling points for any Roomba It s so easy to use that even someone with no prior experience will be able to quickly master the robot s basic functions iRobot s app puts most pertinent controls on the homepage so you rarely if ever need to navigate through its menu to do things like set a cleaning schedule We recommend setting cleaning schedules to really get the most out of the device After all these are semi autonomous robots so why not make it so you rarely have to interact with them Doing so will ensure the Roomba runs through your home on a regular basis so you re always left with clean floors The Roomba in particular did a good job sucking up dirt and debris on my carpets as well as the tile flooring in my kitchen and bathrooms The only thing I try to do before a cleaning job is get charging cables off of the floor the Roomba will stop if it sucks something like that up and it s relatively easy to extract a cable from the machine s brushes but I d rather not have to do so if I can avoid it When it comes to battery life the Roomba ran for around minutes before needing to dock and recharge iRobot says run times will vary based on floor surfaces but the is estimated to have a minute battery life when cleaning hard floors While minutes may be enough time for the robot to scuttle around most rooms in my apartment those with larger homes may have to wait for it to recharge in order to clean everywhere iRobot has made a name for itself in the autonomous vacuum market for good reason Its machines are polished dead simple to use and the accompanying app is excellent That ease of use and the reputation of the iRobot name comes with a slightly higher asking price which many will be willing to pay But there are plenty of solid options now that didn t exist even just three years ago Runner up Shark Ion RVSharkThe Shark RV is the updated version of the RV that we previously recommended Like the Roomba the Shark RV has a slightly different design and a longer run time than the RV but otherwise they re the same vacuum You can still find the RV but it s a little difficult to do so now that the latest model is available Although we haven t tested the RV we feel comfortable recommending it since we found the previous version to be a great affordable robot vacuum Buy Shark RV at Target One thing that the RV fixes about the previous version is the latter s ugly bowling shirt design The new model nixes that and opts for a sleeker all black look with three buttons for docking cleaning and max mode You could rely just on the buttons but it also connects to WiFi so you can use the Shark Clean app As for the longer run time that s just a bonus The RV ran for about minutes before needing to recharge which was plenty of time for it to clean my two bedroom apartment The additional minutes of battery life on the RV should allow it to clean larger spaces more efficiently Some other things we liked about the RV include its spot clean feature adjustable wheels which raise and lower automatically depending on the “terrain and the obstacles in its path and its intuitive companion app that allows you to start and stop cleaning jobs set schedules and more Best bang for your buck Anker Eufy RoboVac SValentina Palladino EngadgetAnker s Eufy RoboVac S was one of the cheapest vacuums I tested but it also proved to be one of the most versatile First thing to note This robot vacuum doesn t have WiFi but it does come with a remote that gives you most of the functions and smart features you d find in an app including a schedule feature Eufy also includes additional brushes and filters in the box Buy Eufy RoboVac S at Amazon The “S in this robot s name stands for slim and it s roughly half an inch thinner than all of the other vacuums I tested Not only does this make the S lighter but it was the only one that could clean under my entryway table The S has a physical on off toggle on its underside plus one button on its top that you can press to start a cleaning It always begins in auto mode which optimizes the cleaning process as it putters around your home but you can use the remote to select a specific cleaning mode like spot and edge clean The S has three power modes ーStandard BoostIQ and Max ーand I kept mine on BoostIQ most of the time It provided enough suction to adequately clean my carpeted floors missing only a few crumbs or pieces of debris in corners or tight spaces around furniture It ran for roughly one hour and minutes when in BoostIQ mode and it has remarkable collision avoidance Sure it bumped into walls and some large pieces of furniture but it was the only budget vac I tried that consistently avoided my cat s play tunnel that lives in the middle of our living room floor As far as noise levels go you can definitely hear the difference between BoostIQ and Max but none of the three settings is offensively loud In fact I could barely hear the S when it was on the opposite end of my apartment running in BoostIQ mode Thankfully error alert beeps were loud enough to let me know when something went awry like the S accidentally getting tripped up by a rogue charging cable which only happened a couple of times and neither robot nor cable were harmed in the process Overall the Eufy RoboVac S impressed me with its smarts despite its lack of WiFi The lack of wireless connectivity is arguably the worst thing about the robot and that s saying a lot It s worth mentioning that this model is rated for up to Pa suction but you can grab the next model up the RoboVac S Max which gives you Pa suction just know that it ll likely be louder as a result But you can t argue with the value of the S ーespecially when you can often find it on sale for or less At this point though the S is a few years old so you could grab either the Robovac G or G if you want something comparable but a bit newer Both come in hybrid versions which means you ll get a robot vacuum and mop in one The differences between the G and G series are minor and we recommend getting the G Hybrid if you re just looking for a Eufy machine with some of the latest technology but don t want to spend a ton It has Pa of suction dynamic navigation and WiFi connectivity with support for Alexa and Google Assistant voice commands The G Hybrid on the other hand is a slight step up from that It s also a WiFi connected machine with vacuum and mop capabilities but it includes Smart Dynamic Navigation a slightly longer battery life and it comes with boundary strips with which you can set no go zones the G Hybrid supports this feature but you ll have to buy the strips separately |
