海外TECH DEV Community My Virtual Meeting Survival Strategies https://dev.to/lillchan/my-virtual-meeting-survival-strategies-27oa My Virtual Meeting Survival StrategiesI ve been working from home since mid and over the years I ve unconsciously collected strategies for staying focused during virtual meetings I realize now that some of these are focusing strategies common to folks with ADHD which I was diagnosed with at the beginning of this year Woohoo neurodiversity In the spirit of the Virtual Coffee November Challenge for National Novel Writing Month NaNoWriMo here are my strategies to survive virtual meetings Without these the disembodied voices from my laptop go in one ear and out the other Just Say NoI decline meetings I don t need to be in Working for a large corporation my inbox is flooded with newsletters meeting invites and whatnot from departments I ve never even heard of If I m not sure if I need to attend or the agenda is unclear I ll message the organizer to get more clarification and check if I m needed I make sure to send a reason for declining if the organizer personally invites me so they know I m not just blowing them off arbitrarily Take All the Notes My notes are some combination of verbatim transcript questions rephrasing of ideas in my own words and incomplete sentences all formatted within satisfyingly uniform nested bullets yay bullet points I like to make sure both my notes and the meeting window are visible either by splitting the screen or using multiple monitors I rarely look back at my notes unless it s to pull a link or remember a question follow up item It s more of a strategy to stay engaged rather than a beautifully curated reference Move Ya BodyOver the last couple years I ve found the joy of turning off my camera and moving around during calls I usually stretch or walk around the room Sometimes I pace around the garden when the weather is nice I m spoiled by California weather I used to have a manager who loved to have walking check ins unless we needed to talk about something requiring a room computer For virtual meetings the key is having a good wireless headset I ve been using the Jabra Evolve for many years now and love it Jabra has more headset options now I recently got Apple Airpods Pros as a gift which I appreciate for the ease of connectivity to my Apple devices The biggest flaw to this setup is if I forget to charge my headset after a long day of meetings so I always keep a wired headset nearby just in case Face TimeThere are some meetings where I prefer to have my camera on so folks can see my unspoken reaction to things I make faces more than I say things We re on calls so much these days I have to be strategic about when to turn on my camera otherwise I get camera fatigue I save camera time for smaller more intimate or social calls My current webcam is the Logitech Cs Pro HD I love the built in privacy shutter which has served me well and has nicer image quality than the built in laptop camera I find that I can t have my self view on otherwise I m distracted by checking that I m making a socially appropriate face and don t act very naturally I also try to put the view of other folks faces near my camera so when I speak or listen I m looking straight at them like I would in person Engagement LightIt takes me a long time to digest information so I usually don t have follow up questions or input immediately after a discussion as well as struggling with anxiety about speaking up Here are some ways I still try to lightly engage in meetings Asking clarifying questions that rephrase an idea the way I understand it and checking with the speaker if that sounds right Reminding everyone about the agenda if we stray too far from the main topic Giving a minute warning when we re getting close to time and asking what we want to accomplish by the end of the meeting Calling out action follow up items and who will take ownership of said items Final ThoughtsFidgeting I ve noticed that I fidget with random things on my desk and have been considering getting an actual fidget toy I m liking the look of these Fidgetland toys thanks to Kai for the recommendation in this amazing ADHD resource article Multi tasking I don t believe in doing other mentally taxing things when I m in meetings chat email tickets etc unless it s a meeting intended for everyone to get work done If we ve decided that we all need a meeting then we should all be engaged in the conversation otherwise it s a waste of everyone s time Of course this is an incomplete list that will evolve with time I m hopeful that as we all develop better strategies to work from home that virtual meetings will continue to become more engaging thoughtful and welcoming Thanks for reading Would love to hear your thoughts and experiences with virtual meetings 2022-11-29 23:35:19
海外TECH DEV Community What Makes You Stay In A Community? https://dev.to/adiatiayu/what-makes-you-stay-in-a-community-4go What Makes You Stay In A Community Hello Friends When I was writing Supportive Tech Communities You Want To Be Part Of some thoughts crossed my mind Why do people want to stay in a community What makes them willing to volunteer in a community For me these are the things that made me stay being active and willing to contribute to the communities WelcomingWhenever I join a community I will introduce myself And I can get that sense of warmth and welcoming atmosphere from how everyone receives me and other newcomers It can be either through emojis GIFs or welcoming replies When I didn t get that sense of welcome I would leave InclusivityIn this context I m talking about inclusivity in general There was a time when I joined a community and felt like an outsider I remember I was a total newbie And I asked a super noob question It was a while before anyone responded And the only response that I got was It s very basic bro It s easy Have you googled Oh yes I remember that response clearly as if I heard it yesterday First of all oh please I m not a bro and definitely not your bro Second it may be easy for you but not for me Have you never been a newbie And most importantly friends that kind of response makes newbies doubt themselves and feel like they don t belong in tech So yes I m totally staying in an inclusive community SupportNot gonna lie One of the reasons I join a community is to get a support system I need people to ask questions give me feedback and get mentorships I need friends with whom I can share my ups and downs and who have the same interest as I do of course I m talking about tech A supportive community will always get your back And because I get that support I will not only stay but also give back to the community I contribute and volunteer to support other members with whatever I can Size of the communityI m an introverted and shy person So a huge community is usually overwhelming for me It takes a lot of work to catch up with the conversations Also I often have trouble figuring out where to start And it would be worse if the community lacked moderators I usually stay but more as a quiet passenger Small to medium size communities usually are inclusive and more intimate And I often found myself not only sticking around but also being active in these sizes of communities The founder s the team and the volunteersI found myself staying in communities where the founder s the team and the volunteers are actively engaging with the members and know their members What makes a community great is when all members can interact with the community s core team In my opinion that s one thing that makes people feel included Acknowledgement and appreciationHere is an example A maintainer in your community approaches you and says Hey I remember you gave an idea about X the other day We think it sounds great for our community Will you talk more about it The community remembers that you gave the idea although it s already been passed And they even ask you if you want to talk more about it Not only do they acknowledge you but they also appreciate you I will definitely stay and give my all when I get such acknowledgment and appreciation in a community I mean who doesn t Now I m curious What are you looking for in a community when you think of joining And if you re part of a community what makes you stay Even better what about the community that makes you active in engaging and volunteering or contributing I would love to hear from you Drop your thoughts in the comment below Thank you for reading Last you can find me on Twitter and Mastodon Let s connect 2022-11-29 23:11:38
海外TECH DEV Community Web Security 101 - Part 1: Secrets https://dev.to/abbeyperini/web-security-101-part-1-secrets-5e39 Web Security Part SecretsStarting my web security series by sharing my secrets just kidding Let s talk about keeping our secrets safe Environment VariablesSecret ServersTokensCookiesMan in the MiddleWeb Storage APIIndexedDB APISession Hijacking Environment VariablesEnvironment variables are like global server variables They re often used for secrets and sensitive information There are ways to expose them to front end code in the browser but then they re not secrets anymore Anyone can find them There are packages like dotenv that allow you to configure environment variables in files You can configure them when you host a site using a platform like Heroku or Netlify You can also set them in your terminal environment manually or in files your terminal uses Another common use case for environment variables is for information that will change by environment For example you d have an environment variable denoting the environment like NODE ENV testing or NODE ENV production Then you d have code like if NODE ENV testing URL BASE http localhost else URL BASE http mydomain net Depending on how you deploy it s also possible to have separate projects for each environment and just change the values of the variables Secret ServersYou may be asked to use a secret server to store your secrets Some are set up similar to a password manager just to share credentials Others are servers that allow you retrieve secrets with an authenticated HTTP request Products like Google Cloud have the authentication authorization secret storage and secret retrieval built into the system you use to deploy your code If secrets are stored this way instead of hardcoded in an environment variable it s much easier to rotate them frequently TokensTokens are a string representing information that has been encrypted often using a cryptographic hash The information is for authentication and authorization purposes When you re a user of an app they re typically using tokens to authenticate and authorize you You ll usually get keys or tokens from APIs to authenticate and authorize your app as a developer There are lots of encryption algorithms but one you ll commonly come across in web development is a JWT A JSON Web Token has cryptography features around JSON In other words they re designed to be compact URL safe and easily consumed in JavaScript Perfect for HTTP requests in web development They re even formatted like an HTTP request with headers a payload with the JSON data and a signature The signature is another type of cryptography code signing In short code signing aims to guarantee you can trust the information by verifying the source Like many cryptographic standards the JWT algorithms are not secret You can paste a JWT into Auth s JWT debugger and see the information inside This is why you should keep JWTs and all tokens you receive secret Rotate them often Only send them over HTTPS As secrets tokens should stay in the server but we often need to store information about users in the browser Let s talk about cookies CookiesAfter you login and a server has received your authentication authorization token it will repackage the information the front end needs into a cookie and send it via HTTP There s a specific set cookie header You can use multiple set cookie headers and each takes one key value pair e g a JavaScript object or a Python tuple The most secure cookie has the secure SameSite and HttpOnly attributes set The first means it can only be sent over HTTPS The second prevents CORS requests from accessing the cookie if it s set to strict The lax value sends the cookie when a user navigates to the same origin The value none doesn t restrict requests for the cookie HttpOnly only allows the cookie to be stored in a server It won t be set in the browser and you won t be able to access it in your app with the cookie API In other words if you don t set HttpOnly and SameSite strict anyone can access your cookie in the browser with JavaScript In other words if you want to store session information about a user in the front end don t put anything secret in your cookie Instead the front end will store a token or id that expires essentially a public key It doesn t matter if someone knows the public key if the private key is stored on the back end for verification Only when the two are put together is sensitive information revealed Man in the MiddleWhy should you guard your tokens and cookies so closely Man in the Middle attacks They go by many names and monster in the middle is my personal favorite Using HTTP as an example the monster intercepts the information in the middle between the sender and the recipient Then they ll repackage the information like they never opened it and send it on its way Sometimes they want the secrets in your cookies Other times they re more interested in how you re code signing or encoding the information Check out the OWASP article for more information Web Storage APIIf you re already planning on storing non secret information in the front end you can also use the Web Storage API The Web Storage API has two parts session storage and local storage Session storage only stores things for a session as soon as you close the browser or tab it s gone Local storage has no expiration Both store key value pairs There are built in methods so storing and accessing information in Web Storage is as easy as localStorage setItem key value sessionStorage getItem key IndexedDB APIThe IndexedDB API is like the Web Storage API but bigger It s a whole object oriented database right in the browser This means you can store a lot of not secret information It s persistent storage and works online and offline For more information check out Mozilla Developer Network s guide Session HijackingWhy am I so adamant you shouldn t store secrets in the browser Session hijacking There are multiple types including a man in the middle attack A common one is to gain access to session information stored in the browser The goal is either to send it to the server and gain access there or maintain your session impersonating you Attackers can use trojan horses clickjacking UI redressing and XSS to session hijack as well Always assume anything stored in the browser is compromised ConclusionLike many of my blogs this advice comes from experience I ve exposed keys to the browser not realizing how dangerous that was My husband has been the victim of a session hijack and we discovered how little Amazon cares about protecting people from them I thought I d get started with a general overview of secrets and where not to store them I ll talk more about server HTTP JavaScript and HTML vulnerabilities in other blogs in this series 2022-11-29 23:10:58
