Creating Web Accessibility: HTML Attributes |
https://dev.to/frontend_jedi/creating-web-accessibility-html-attributes-5cnj
|
Creating Web Accessibility HTML AttributesBack on the topic of accessibility and today we ll be focusing on some of the HTML attributes that can enhance accessibility Before diving right in let s fulfill all righteousness by defining what HTML Attributes areAccording to Java point HTML attributes are special words which provide additional information about the elements or attributes are the modifier of the HTML elements Now that we ve gotten that out of the way let s dive into some attributes that enhance accessibility for usersalt attribute This attribute provides a text description of an image which is read aloud by screen readers for users who are blind or visually impaired It is important to provide an accurate and descriptive alt text for every image on a web page title attribute This attribute displays a tooltip when the user hovers over an element and also provides additional information about that element It is very useful when using icons or symbols that are not very familiar to users also for users who have difficulties with small or hard to read text aria label attribute This attribute provides a text label for an element that is not visible on the screen or cannot be interacted with aria label is almost exactly like the image alt attribute it can be used to provide more information for users who are blind or visually impaired They are used in elements such as buttons inputs tables links etc There are so many aria attributes that can be used to enhance accessibility but unfortunately cannot make it on this list visit the WC comprehensive list of ARIA attributes on their website to learn more Back to the list tabindex attribute This attribute controls the order in which elements are focused when a user navigates a web page using the keyboard It is important to ensure that the focus order is logical and intuitive for users with mobility impairments or who rely on the keyboard to navigate You can read more about the tabindex attribute hererole attribute This attribute can also be used to control the focus order of elements on a web page which can be helpful for users with mobility impairments or who rely on the keyboard to navigate For example if you have a section of your website that contains a list of links you could use the role attribute to indicate that the section is a navigation menu This would allow a screen reader to announce to the user that the section is a menu and provide additional navigation options accesskey attribute This attribute can be used to assign a keyboard shortcut to an element such as a link or a button This can be helpful for users who have difficulty using a mouse or other pointing device allowing them to navigate a web page more quickly and easily ConclusionWhen creating a website or application it is paramount that you have all types of users in mind because of what use will your app be if your users can t make sense of their left from their right Accessibility should be your first thought As usual thank you for reading and I hope you got value for your time Follow frontend jedi to stay updated on this series and other frontend development topics Follow me on twitter Frontend Jedi let s connect and learn more together |

The New Reality - AR + dNFTs |
https://dev.to/anil_from_revise/the-new-reality-ar-dnfts-2n57
|
The New Reality AR dNFTsWhat if you could enhance your reality and own it What if you could also allow others to experience it immersively This idea can become a reality we could live in together This is possible by utilizing the power of Augmented Reality AR and Dynamic NFTs dNFTs So let s dive right in and see how we can use AR and dNFTs to create a new reality Intro to AR and dNFTsLet s start by understanding what AR and dNFT s are ARAugmented Reality is a technology designed to augment our reality AR enhances our real world by incorporating different digital elements into our physical world We can create interactive experiences using AR that are influenced by our real world Digital content is gaining a new outlook because of the immersive potential of AR Pokemon Go was a successful AR game showcasing the power of AR in gaming You must have also experienced AR lenses on Instagram and Snapchat This is one of AR s use cases called “Social AR Few Examples of AR experiences on Snapchat source There are many more use cases and implementations of AR we will get onto that soon But now let s learn about dNFTs dNFTsdNFTs are nothing but the involvement of dynamics in NFTs So what is dynamic Well it implies change the opposite of it is static Consider your name it s likely not gonna change so we can consider it to be an example of static data However if we look at the temperature of our place or the price of a cryptocurrency they keep on changing This implies that they are dynamic Let s get back to dNFTs NFTs Non Fungible Tokens as we know are unique digital objects on a blockchain Each NFT differs from the others as it possesses a unique token ID and contract address Then we can attach metadata like images videos and other forms of media to it thus making it possible to own a token representing a unique digital object But what if we could incorporate new information and data into an NFT This will increase its value and utility Here s where dNFTs come to light Dynamic NFTs dNFTs are expanding NFTs by their ability to respond to external events and data A dNFT is a type of NFT that can change its property based on external conditions Smart contracts are instructed on how the dNFT s metadata should be changed based on an external trigger Eg Dynamic Art A piece of digital art in a dynamic NFT can change depending on the external weather Source Chainlink The intersection of AR and dNFTsAR and dNFTs can be combined to enhance the way we experience our digital and physical worlds For example an AR app could recognize a dynamic NFT and display different information or animations depending on the token s current state Instead of letting NFTs stay in the wallet AR allows us to experience them in the real world Artists are using AR to enhance their artwork and give it life The true power of the spatial web can be experienced by combining AR with NFTs dNFTs for instance can be created when specific events occur such as when a hidden location in an AR app is discovered dNFTs might also have “hidden features that are only revealed when a user interacts with them By overlaying this digital art onto the real world through AR users can experience the art in a unique way For example a dNFT art piece could respond to the user s motion or change its look based on the time of day Let s explore a few use cases of dNFTs and AR Gaming The immersion and engagement of gaming can be taken to the next level by overlaying game worlds onto the real world using AR The items and assets in the game can be represented using dNFTs dNFTs can also allow character progression i e as we level up in the game our character s look will change to reflect the progress Example Maddroids are using the power of AR and dNFTs in their game Art In the world of art AR with dNFTs is enabling artists to create dynamic as well as interactive art pieces that can evolve over time In addition technologies like face tracking provide new methods of control for NFT based interactive and animated artwork by providing a new canvas to place them With a world lens you can interact with an art NFT by placing it in your own environment be it your living room office or art gallery with AR Marketing and advertising Companies can use the potential of dNFTs with AR to increase their consumer engagement and reward their customers with exclusive access to their events and products Education With AR we can provide an interactive learning experience to students by laying educational content in the real world Also dNFTs can be combined to provide students with badges progress cards and exam reports Fashion AR could allow people to wear simple bodysuits in real life and view each other s fashion NFTs through AR glasses which overlay extra information onto a user s real world scene Rtfkt arguably the most successful NFT fashion brand recently posted a video of people walking around New York City wearing Rtfkt s clothing in AR including its Metajacket from the point of view of a person wearing AR glasses Passport and identity Future passports can be issued as dNFTs this getting automatically updated based on the locations you travel to Also you could go through your travel history in form of AR I am super excited to use this Business growth Businesses will use AR and dNFTs as a means to provide loyalty points and discounts to their customers will see an incremental growth in their traction and profits Event organization dNFTs as a form of event ticket can update its status on its own based on your activity and involvement in the event Supply chain Supply chain can gain a surmountable benefit by using dNFTs and AR to get automatic and immersive updates on the status of delivery during each checkpoint ExamplesLet s look at some exciting projects in this space QR AR NFTPascal Boyart was one of the first street artists to attach Bitcoin QR codes to his work He gives life to his murals using the power of AR spatial audio and NFTs La LibertéGuidant le Peuple Liberty Guiding the People Pascal BoyartLamelo Ball dNFT Lamelo Ball a professional NBA player released dynamic NFT tied to his performance on the court Source Lamelo Ball WebsiteAR filter to showcase NFTThe auction house Sotheby s created an Instagram filter allowing users to see what Botticelli s “Portrait of a Young Man Holding a Roundel painting would look like in their homes Botticelli s Portrait of a Young Man Holding a RoundelAR dNFTsOne can buy seed crystals which with time grow into OG crystal Source OG Crystal AR Mural NFT Ryan Sarfati and Eric Skotnes s The Majestic artwork allows people who can t visit Tulsa can enjoy the painting online in AR Source OpenseaIt is the largest mural in Oklahoma holding the world record for the largest augmented mural Target Tracking AR NFT NFT Boba allows owners to view their NFT in the real world using AR plane tracking implementation Source NFTBobadNFT gamingSunflower Land is a game allowing the creation of dynamic pfp and characters Source Sunflower LandSome other examples are Face filter NFTs Melbourne based artist Marc O Matic merges traditional illustrative art D animation and augmented reality Ready Player Me buy NFT avatars and use them in augmented reality and virtual reality environments Hololoot It is a blockchain based ecosystem that integrates NFTs and AR assets creating a metaverse for users to explore and create user generated contents that are recorded on the blockchain AR Metaverse ConclusionWith the powerful combination of AR and dNFTs brands and creators can benefit as their immersive projects will gain improved engagement greater loyalty and flexible monetization AR Augmented Reality and dynamic NFTs Non Fungible Tokens are two emerging technologies that have the potential to revolutionize the way we interact with digital assets Overall the future of AR with dynamic NFTs is bright with the potential to transform various industries and create new and exciting experiences for users This new sphere of collaboration leaves us with a question to ponder If we can build the future then why not For more updates about dynamic NFTs and their recent developments DevOps based application deployment If you want to learn Docker in depth and looking for best resources like books online courses and tutorials then you have come to the right place Earlier I have shared best Docker and Kubernetes courses and my reasons to learn Docker and in this article I am going to share best books to learn Docker and Kubernetes in depth Being an author of a Java and Programming blog I often receive a lot of questions about Docker like what is Docker What is Kubernetes What problem them solve Do I need to learn Docker as a Java Developer what is Docker compose which Docker commands should I learn what is Docker Hub How can I migrate my application to Docker and how can I deploy Docker container on AWS Azure and GCP These are also common doubts of programmers across the world and I believe every programmer should learn Docker and Kubernetes Let s start with What is Docker and why a Programmer should learn Docker Simply speaking Docker is a tool which makes application deployment really easy It abstract the deployment using container which means you can deploy a Java application and a NET application in the same way You don t need to install JDK or CLR into your host all you need is a Docker image which contains not just application code but also everything else your application need to run like Java Runtime Java third party libraries as well as operating system like Linux or Windows Like most software technologies out there Docker provides a great level of abstraction which makes it easy to bundle an application and its dependency which in turn makes it easy to deploy the application on cloud Docker also aims to solve the classic problem of application working on one machine but not working on others It does that by abstracting all things including OS which is needed by the application to run Docker was first launched by Solomon Hykes in It is also one of the most popular DevOps tool and great for continuous deployment and testing Docker containers make sure there is consistency with multiple environments developments and release cycles helping to standardize your environment Best Docker and Kubernetes Books for Beginners and Experienced DevelopersWithout wasting any more of your time here is my list of best books to learn Docker from scratch Though this list is not just for beginners but also for an experienced developer who wants to learn Docker in depth I have also included books like Docker Deep Dive which is really great to level up your Docker Skills and become the developer every company Apache APISIX Serverless Plugin for Event Hooks |
https://dev.to/apisix/apache-apisix-serverless-plugin-for-event-hooks-1l73
|
Apache APISIX Serverless Plugin for Event HooksApache APISIX is an open source high performance API gateway built on top of Nginx One of its powerful features is the ability to create serverless functions which are small stateless programs that can extend the functionality of Apache APISIX In this article we ll cover the basics of the Apache APISIX serverless plugin and how it can be used to trigger serverless functions in response to events Learning objectivesYou will learn the following throughout the article What is Apache APISIX serverless plugin How the serverless plugin works and how to use it Serverless plugin use cases How you can use serverless plugin to integrate with a webhook What is Apache APISIX serverless plugin The Apache APISIX serverless plugin for event hooks allows you to write serverless functions and integrate them into the API gateway The plugin provides a simple and flexible way to run custom code in response to events without having to manage the underlying infrastructure Serverless plugin separates the logic for handling events into separate serverless functions you can simplify your API architecture and make it easier to manage Apache APISIX provides support for serverless frameworks for popular cloud vendors such as Azure Functions AWS Lambda How to use the serverless plugin To use the Apache APISIX serverless plugin for event hooks you ll need to write a serverless function code in Lua programming language that implements the logic that you want to run in response to an event and enable serverless pre function or serverless post function plugin depending on the phases of the request response cycle of your choice Currently APISIX only supports Lua to write a function code If you prefer other programming languages you can always use plugin runners to create a new custom plugin from scratch Serverless plugin use casesHere are a few use cases for the Apache APISIX serverless plugin for event hooks Dynamic Routing The serverless plugin can be used to dynamically route incoming API requests based on specific criteria such as the request method URL path or header values This allows you to easily implement complex routing scenarios without having to modify the underlying Apache APISIX configuration Authentication and Authorization You can use the serverless plugin to implement authentication and authorization checks for your API For example you can write a serverless function that verifies the presence of a valid API key in the request headers before allowing the request to continue Or it can be used as an external authorization service with the combination of forward auth plugin Request Transformation The serverless plugin can be used to transform incoming API requests before they are processed by the backend service For example you can write a serverless function that modifies the request headers or body to match the format expected by the backend service Response Transformation You can also use the serverless plugin to transform the response from the backend service before it is sent back to the client For example you can write a serverless function that modifies the response headers or body to match the format expected by the client Logging and Monitoring You can use the serverless plugin to implement logging and monitoring for your API For example you can write a serverless function that logs detailed information about each API request such as the request method URL headers and body for later analysis Integrating Apache APISIX with webhooks Demo To integrate Apache APISIX with webhooks you need to create a serverless function that listens for incoming POST requests to the URL endpoint checks if the request method is POST and sends a webhook notification to the third party service whenever a new message is posted The serverless function should also return the response from the webhook so you can see the status of the webhook and any error messages if something goes wrong In both cases APISIX can communicate with the target service letting the target know that an event was triggered by calling a provided URL with information about that event PrerequisitesDocker installed on your machine to run APISIX Basic knowledge about couple of APISIX core concepts such as Route Upstream and Plugin Set up the projectThis first thing you clone the apisix docker project repo from GitHub git clone Open the project folder in your favorite code editor The tutorial leverages VS Code Install and run Apache APISIXTo run Apache APISIX you can follow these steps Open a new terminal window and run docker compose up command from the root folder of the project docker compose up dAbove command will run Apache APISIX and etcd together with Docker We installed APISIX using Docker in this demo However there are other options to install it on installation guide Configure the serverless function in Apache APISIXTo set up the serverless function in Apache APISIX you need to create a new route for the endpoint and configure the serverless plugin with our custom function code in Lua Here s an example of a serverless function in Lua that listens for incoming POST requests to the endpoint and sends a webhook notification function webhook conf ctx Import neccessary libraries local http require resty http local core require apisix core Send the webhook notification only if the request method is POST otherwise skip and send it to the upstream as usual if core request get method POST then Send the webhook notification to the specified URL local httpc http new local res err httpc request uri method POST headers Content Type application json body core request get body Check the response from the webhook if not res then core log error Failed to send webhook err return err end end Return the response from the upstream service return conf status conf bodyendAs you can see in the above sample webhook function code it makes JSON POST requests to a provided URL with the request body the request body from the client to the API Gateway as a payload Testing webhooks website is used to mock our webhook endpoint To create and set your webhook endpoint Generate a URL by navigating to in your web browser Select Copy to clipboard next to Your unique URL Paste it to the request uri method of HTTP request in the function code Also all other requests including POST will be forwarded further down to the upstream service In the next step we configure a route and upstream Configure a Route and UpstreamNow we will create a new route with the serverless function plugin enabled and an upstream that acts as our backend service curl X PUT apisix admin routes H X API KEY eddcfffadbcf H Content Type application json d uri post plugins serverless pre function phase rewrite functions return function conf ctx Import neccessary libraries local http require resty http local core require apisix core Send the webhook notification only if the request method is POST otherwise skip and send it to the upstream as usual if core request get method POST then Send the webhook notification to the specified URL local httpc http new local res err httpc request uri method POST headers Content Type application json body core request get body Check the response from the webhook if not res then core log error Failed to send webhook err return err end end Return the response from the upstream service return conf status conf body end upstream nodes httpbin org type roundrobin In the preceding route configuration example we created our first route by sending curl request to APISIX Admin API In the Route request body we specified that any requests to path post will trigger the serverless function code and be forwarded later to the target httpbin org This means the request will be routed to httpbin org post endpoint after it checks if the request method is POST and the event should be sent to the rd party service webhook endpoint or not The backend service can be replaced with your backend service You may also notice that we added the function code into functions properties of serverless pre function in the Json object Test the configurationFinally we test by calling post API Gateway endpoint if everything works as we expected and the post event will be sent to the webhook website curl i post X POST d message A new webhook message After you navigate to the webhook URL from the page that you generated in the previous steps You should see a POST request notifying our webhook endpoint about the event and sent the request body In addition to this we get the response back from the mock upstream service httpbin org HTTP OKContent Type application json form n message A new webhook message n headers Accept Content Length Content Type application x www form urlencoded Host X Forwarded Host json null url Obviously if you send other methods of HTTP requests apart from POST the serverless function code will not trigger the webhook endpoint This is a basic example of setting up a serverless function in Apache APISIX You can extend this functionality by adding more complex logic to your serverless function such as triggering another function in response to webhooks ConclusionThe Apache APISIX serverless plugin for event hooks provides a flexible and scalable way to trigger serverless functions in response to events that occur during the processing of API requests By using the plugin you can simplify your API architecture improve the performance and reliability of your services and reduce the cost of managing your application infrastructure Related resourcesEvent Driven APIs with Webhook and API Gateway Recommended contentManage serverless APIs with Apache APISIXHow to choose the right API GatewayWhy Is Apache DevOps Architecture Advantages and DisadvantagesDevOps architecture is an approach to software development and operations that emphasizes collaboration automation and continuous improvement Below are some of the key advantages and disadvantages of DevOps architecture Advantages Faster Time to Market DevOps architecture enables organizations to deliver software updates and new features more quickly and with higher quality By automating many of the software development testing and deployment processes organizations can reduce the time required to move code from development to production resulting in faster time to market Improved Collaboration DevOps architecture promotes collaboration between development and operations teams which can help to break down silos and improve communication This collaboration helps to ensure that everyone is working towards the same goals and reduces the likelihood of misunderstandings and delays Higher Quality By automating many of the software development and testing processes DevOps architecture can help to improve the quality of software products This is because automated tests can identify issues earlier in the development process making it easier to address problems before they become more significant Scalability DevOps architecture can help organizations to scale their software development and operations processes more easily By leveraging cloud computing and virtualization technologies organizations can quickly provision and scale up or down as needed ensuring that they have the resources they need to meet changing demands Continuous Improvement DevOps architecture is built around the principle of continuous improvement By continuously evaluating and improving processes tools and practices organizations can make iterative improvements to their software development and operations processes over time resulting in higher quality software and more efficient processes Disadvantages Complexity DevOps architecture can be complex to implement and manage particularly for organizations that are new to this approach There can be a steep learning curve and it can take time to fully implement and optimize DevOps processes and tools Cost Implementing DevOps architecture can be expensive particularly if an organization needs to invest in new tools and infrastructure The initial investment in DevOps can be significant although the long term benefits of this approach can offset these costs Cultural Resistance DevOps architecture requires collaboration and communication between teams which can be challenging for organizations that have a more siloed culture Resistance to change can also be an obstacle to implementing DevOps particularly in organizations where there is a preference for traditional waterfall style development processes Security Risks The automation and integration of development and operations processes can introduce new security risks into the software development lifecycle Organizations need to be vigilant about security and implement appropriate security measures to minimize these risks Tool Overload DevOps architecture relies on a range of tools and technologies to automate and streamline processes While this can be an advantage in many ways it can also lead to tool overload making it difficult for organizations to manage and maintain their toolsets effectively Overall DevOps architecture can deliver significant benefits in terms of speed quality collaboration and continuous improvement However it is not without its challenges and organizations need to carefully consider the advantages and disadvantages of this approach before adopting it my previous article about DevOps Click here |

macOS amp iOS bug could start a new wave of exploitsWhile immediate issues arising from new class of bugs that can beat the strict code signing of macOS and iOS have been fixed researchers are wary that there are more to come Apple is known to be extremely strict when it comes to code signing on iOS with only apps cryptographically signed by a developer certificate trusted enough to run on the operating system With macOS becoming more iOS like stricter enforcement of code signing has also been adopted for added security However in a disclosure on Tuesday by security outfit Trellix there is a large new class of bugs that an attacker could use to bypass code signing and allow the execution of code in macOS and iOS This can lead to an escalation of privileges for the app and an escape from the sandbox Read more |

How to find the best gaming console for you in 2023 |
https://www.engadget.com/best-gaming-console-140057674.html?src=rss
|
How to find the best gaming console for you in There is no such thing as the best game console but figuring out which one is right for you is more in reach There are seven systems that you could reasonably call “current gen and others such as Valve s Steam Deck further muddying the waters Engadget staffers play games on pretty much every console you can think of and a few that you might not have thought about for a very long time For some nothing but the highest specced system will do others just need the cheapest way to play the latest games maybe you value portability over everything or maybe you haven t played in years and are looking for a system for your family to enjoy together There are endless use cases for a games console and that s why we ve put together this article We ve reviewed and evaluated every console in here some more than once and tried to categorize the “best gaming console for specific needs You ll find picks in here with all of the big players represented and two best high end consoles each for different reasons We hope by the end of this guide you ll be much closer to deciding on the perfect console for you Best high end console PSThe PlayStation delivers the most stunning graphics and seamless performance of any current gen gaming console Sony stuck with the traditional hardware upgrade cycle for the PS significantly improving processing power and visual fidelity over the previous generation and introducing a new gamepad packed with immersion mechanics The DualSense Sony s latest controller is a standout feature It offers intense and precise haptic feedback along the grips and has adaptive triggers meaning tension in the R and L buttons changes as players equip various weapons and tools This is something that the Xbox Series consoles simply don t have Meanwhile the PS offers a library of console exclusives including God of War Ragnarök Returnal the Demon s Souls remake Insomniac s Spider Man series every The Last of Us game and re release and a litany of Final Fantasy titles PlayStation Plus Premium the highest tier of Sony s monthly subscription service adds cloud streaming freebies and a catalog of games to download at any time Premium costs a month or annually and there are cheaper tiers with fewer perks in the Plus ecosystem The PS may look a little funny sitting next to your TV but truly it s what s inside that counts And hey that s why companies like dbrand exist Jessica Conditt Senior ReporterBest high end console Xbox Series XThe Xbox Series X is the most powerful gaming console on the market and together with a Game Pass subscription it gives you an almost endless library of titles to dive into including launch day Microsoft releases While we d still like to see more exclusives on Xbox there are major titles on the horizon like Starfield Redfall and the revamped Forza Motor Sport PC gamers may also appreciate cross purchases between Windows and Xbox titles as well as the ability to stream games from the cloud using Game Pass Sure Sony still has a stranglehold on big budget narrative games but the sheer wealth of offerings on Microsoft s platforms ーincluding small indies classic franchises and a ton of great games via EA Play included with Game Pass for PCs and Ultimate ーis staggering It used to be that you d have to stick with the same console all of your friends are using but these days the availability of cross play multiplayer on most titles makes that consideration moot If you want to play Call of Duty with your friends it doesn t really matter if you get an Xbox Series X or PlayStation So the best advice now Base your choice on the exclusives you d like to play as well as the potential subscription benefits If you want to see where Master Chief goes next or are just tired of paying full price for first party games and some indies you ll probably be happiest with a Series X and Game Pass Devindra Hardawar Senior ReporterBest budget console Xbox Series S Game PassThe Xbox Series S packs enough power to play the latest and greatest games but it truly shines as a semi portable Game Pass machine The Series S is a disc less compact console that typically costs though it s frequently on sale for to This little rectangular baby can play games at resolutions higher than p though it won t hit K and it s less powerful overall than the Series X The Series S also has less storage space than its big sibling and this is its main drawback That s where Game Pass comes in A Game Pass Ultimate subscription unlocks cloud streaming on the Series S as well as PC and mobile devices allowing players to dive into a large library without downloading anything Game Pass Ultimate is a month with the first month for Microsoft has the most reliable cloud network in the business and it s committed to releasing all of its big new Xbox Game Studios titles on Game Pass day one Sony has yet to make such a promise with in house launches on PlayStation Plus Even without Game Pass the Series S is the cheapest way to participate in the Xbox console ecosystem and it ll play every game the Series X can You might just have to delete downloads as you go J C Best for local multiplayer Nintendo SwitchIt s a pity that the rise of online multiplayer meant the death of local options for most gaming consoles ーthat is except for the Nintendo Switch Chalk it up to Nintendo s legacy It s a company that s always prioritized the simple beauty of playing with your friends and family on the couch Be it four players racing against each other locally in Mario Kart or diving into an assortment of mini games in Mario Party you can have a blast using a single Switch hooked up to a TV It s a cinch to connect other controllers to let your friends join ーsomething they ll likely have on hand if they have their own Switch And since it s a portable console you can always play against others over local networks giving you the beauty of being together with friends while also having your own private screen Just try doing that with a PS D H Best couch portable Valve Steam DeckThe idea of a portable console that s primarily used at home might feel counterintuitive but this is actually how a lot of people prefer to play games and the Steam Deck helped prove it The Steam Deck came out in February and quickly emerged as a popular PC portable for people who wanted to spend time away from their desks but not their Steam libraries It s a chunky handheld gaming console with dual analog sticks and trackpads standard face buttons bumpers and triggers four rear clickers and a inch LCD touchscreen It s big and strangely beautiful and plays most PC games just fine The Steam Deck starts at and tops out at making it relatively affordable in the world of PC portables The Steam Deck is a little too big and battery sucking to be a must have carry on while traveling but it s perfect for cuddling on the couch with a supportive pillow and power outlet nearby J C Best for first time gamers Nintendo Switch LiteNintendo has a history of making tank like portable consoles and the Switch Lite is no exception It s just as fast as its larger sibling but since it has integrated controls you won t have to worry about any Joy cons flying away if it s dropped The Switch Lite s inch screen and smaller frame always makes it easier for tiny hands to hold something I ve found particularly useful as my four year old daughter is finally getting into games There s a wide variety of child friendly content available on the Switch but we d recommend diving into the classic of library Nintendo titles via the console s online service Kids will ultimately figure out Minecraft on their own but it s up to the older generation to instill the value of proper platforming with Super Mario Bros D H Best for commuting Nintendo Switch LiteThe Switch Lite is by far the cutest handheld gaming console on the market today and this is just one reason it s ideal for use in public The Switch Lite is a tiny lightweight handheld with a inch LCD touchscreen and basic gamepad buttons and it s sold in a variety of colorways and special editions It feels natural to pull out while on the bus riding the subway in a waiting room or just hanging out at a cafe bar or park It s a low profile portable that offers a library of engaging games from Nintendo and beyond including exclusive franchises like The Legend of Zelda Pokemon Mario Kart Smash Bros Bayonetta Animal Crossing and Kirby In comparison to the standard Switch the Lite model is sturdier for everyday commutes because it doesn t have detachable controllers and it takes up less space in your bag It s also about cheaper than the larger Switch at J C Best for air travel Nintendo SwitchThe Switch s hardware may be showing its age but it s still the best way to get some gaming in during long flights Having a inch screen or inches with the pricier Switch OLED in your hands makes it easy to ignore annoying seat neighbors countless delays and all of the other indignities of air travel The Switch should also survive for several hours of gameplay and it s easy to charge for longer journeys While the Steam Deck may be tempting it s also so large it ll likely fill up much of your backpack The Switch can still fit alongside your computer and other gear and its game library is so vast you ll never be left wanting for things to play D H Best handheld gaming console for nostalgia Retroid Pocket The Retroid Pocket is an accessible streamlined emulation machine that s capable of handling games from the sixth generation down that s anything up to the GameCube and PlayStation It can even run some PSP games apparently but at this point you re just getting greedy The Retroid Pocket brings classics like Super Mario RPG Metal Gear Solid Final Fantasy IX and so many others to modern audiences and they all look better than ever What s more the Retroid Pocket is an Android based handheld gaming console which means it also works as a hub for cloud streaming through services like Xbox Game Pass Ultimate This little device is tinier than a Switch Lite and it has a inch LCD touchscreen that s smaller than Nintendo s latest handheld but bigger than the screen of a classic Game Boy for what it s worth What s most astonishing about the Retroid Pocket is its price just J C Best console with a large game streaming library Xbox Series X or S For console gamers Microsoft s Game Pass subscription has been a revelation For a month you can play hundreds of games including all of Microsoft s first party software as well as major titles like Monster Hunter Rise and A Plague Tale Requiem Even better Microsoft owned titles are available the day they re released Bump up to the Game Pass Ultimate tier and you ll also get access to cloud gaming which lets you stream select titles to your phone computer and even some TVs The sheer variety of content on Game Pass makes it hard to stomach paying full price for a game ever again Sony s response to Game Pass amounts to an evolution of its PlayStation Plus service Its highest tier Premium offering costs a month and it also gives you access to a large library of titles and cloud streaming But Sony isn t adding first party titles to any PS Plus tier the day they launch ーyou ll either have to pay full price or wait until they get added to the rotation Until Sony caves having release day access to titles makes Game Pass the obviously better subscription service D H |
