海外TECH DEV Community The decline of CSS Tricks https://dev.to/robole/the-decline-of-css-tricks-1a3b The decline of CSS TricksIt is sad to see that CSS Tricks is in a steady decline Recently Geoff Graham lost his job Geoff was the editor of CSS Tricks for as long as I have been a reader years according to Geoff It was an abrupt end In Geoff s own words I woke up yesterday to the news that DigitalOcean has cut a bunch of jobs from the payroll It sounds like a pretty big wave and yes my job was lopped off with it Thankfully Geoff was not left in a tough spot as he has other jobs on the go This is my first rodeo with sweeping layoffs…or even losing a job I always expected I d feel devastated if something like this were to ever happen but I ve gotta admit it s all good Anyone who knows me well knows that I never have one job but many eggs in a number of baskets That might be influencing my feelings a wee smidge I realize not everyone is in the same boat Why is Digital Ocean laying people off It is endemic in business now that if there is economic slowdown heads can roll to cut costs and keep profits up You can set your watch by it in some regions Digital Ocean acquired CSS Tricks in March of last year presumably as a marketing move to increase its visibility to frontend developers Digital Ocean announced on Feb th that they were laying off about percent of employees even though revenue is growing DigitalOcean in its fiscal Q financial filing said it recorded million in sales up percent year on year during those final three months The quarter ended with a million loss though but better than the million a year ago They are amongst other tech companies implementing layoffs this month including Wix Twilio and Udemy In a comment on Hacker News DigitalOcean co founder Moisey Uretsky said the following on layoffs As unfortunate as the layoffs are they were really due to two CEO changes in the past months and leadership changes that created competing directions in the business which Yancey Spruill our new CEO is now addressing We are not running out of money nor do we have an immediate need to raise capital and the layoffs aren t related to any sort of cost cutting It is not cost cutting it is a change in direction ‍They actually are not a profitable business Back to Moisey to field that one We are running at a modest loss now which is OK because we are growing and also because whenever you launch a new product or feature the up front costs are much higher to get the initial product built and there is no revenue contribution from it until it s launched and has ramped up But even so we did manage a completely net profitable year in our history in which I m very proud of and have been at a slight loss in other years We still have plenty of our Series B raise in our bank account The good news is that they have cash in the bank and the stock price DOCN is on the rise since the layoffs on Feb th ‍️ The decline of CSS TricksWhen DigitalOcean acquired CSS Tricks last year there was a small transition period where Chris Coyier helped to hand over the reins and then he stepped away From the content side CSS Tricks was a person team of Chris Geoff and Robin Rendle Robin also left shortly after the acquisition Geoff was the final link to the old establishment If you have read any of Geoff s articles or had him edit one of yours it is hard not to be infused with his enthusiasm and curiosity for all things web development He had a significant imprint on a lot of what CSS Tricks produced Throughout the years CSS Tricks has had lots of articles contributed by guest writers If people continue to contribute then maybe CSS Tricks can weather the storm and remain a source of education and inspiration for the frontend community I have written a couple of articles for CSS Tricks a couple being two At the beginning of January I was conscious that it has been a while since I contributed something I thought Maybe I should get into the habit of offering some articles to CSS Tricks again So I submitted a proposal for an article on January th I still have not heard back nearly months later I began to wonder if something was awry It surely wasn t me In September of last year Digital Ocean announced that they would be migrating the content of the website to their homespun CMS and shared a proposed redesign of the website This has not been completed yet but is meant to be done in the first half of this year The frequency of publication has slowed down Geoff mentioned that articles were published in down from in This downward trend is continuing into just articles have been published so far this year Final thoughtsI hope that CSS Tricks can carry on and can retain the same spirit The signs do not look promising I would like to take this opportunity to thank Geoff for the positive contributions he has made to web development 2023-02-28 17:31:33

海外TECH DEV Community How to speed up pandas with NumPy methods https://dev.to/deepnote/how-to-speed-up-pandas-with-numpy-methods-34pa How to speed up pandas with NumPy methodsYou d be hard pressed to find a data scientist who doesn t use pandas for their day to day work but sometimes it pays to go from pandas to NumPy Pandas boasts great accessibility and a wide range of tools for small and medium scale projects but not all pandas methods utilize vectorization which reduces the runtime of code Take the apply  method for instance It s essentially a glorified Python for loop and it comes with immense speed constraints especially with large data sets On the bright side you can speed up many pandas methods by pulling from NumPy Let s look at how to speed up pandas with NumPy methods using a data notebook Use cases for using NumPy methods to speed up pandasRuntime optimization is crucial in a business context It directly impacts the performance of programs especially bigger more complex ones Just consider the importance of customer experience If your company s application is powered by a program that runs faster and more efficiently your end users are bound to be more satisfied Hence increased customer loyalty and lifetime value On the other hand a sluggish app runs the risk of sending customers to your competitors There are also cost savings and scalability to consider Optimizing the runtime of a program means it will require fewer resources to execute helping to reduce costs And as applications grow in size and complexity runtime optimization becomes even more critical to making sure performance doesn t suffer The issue with pandas is that although it supports vectorization some of its methods don t This is true for the apply  and groupby  methods You end up using native Python for loops for execution which slows pandas down But NumPy can help improve the performance of pandas in several ways For instance if you re performing numerical operations NumPy offers a suite of numerical functions including element wise operations and linear algebra By using these functions instead of equivalent pandas methods you can get a performance boost Plus since NumPy provides a high performance array data structure that is optimized for numerical computations you can often achieve faster computations when compared to pandas DataFrames There s also the fact that NumPy arrays are stored in a contiguous block of memory making them slightly more memory efficient than DataFrames which store data in a more complex structure and form Using NumPy methods to speed up pandas in a data notebookPandas and NumPy are supported across both interactive Python environments and Python scripts Therefore runtime optimization can be achieved in either of them For this tutorial we ll be exploring how to go from pandas to NumPy methods in a notebook that has Python installed  Keep in mind that you can skip the setup process below if you re using a Deepnote notebook Deepnote comes complete with the most popular data analytics and machine learning Python libraries already installed so you can seamlessly import them into your project Installing pandas amp NumPyTo install pandas and NumPy in a Jupyter notebook run the following command Importing pandas amp NumPyNext to use their methods we must import them The commonly used alias for pandas is pd and for NumPy it s np Pandas vs NumPy runtime comparisonFirst let s create a dummy data set for experimentation Next let s create a NumPy array with two columns and ⁸rows From this array we create a pandas DataFrame using the pd DataFrame method The first five rows are shown below Pandas apply vs NumPy where for conditional columnsWe mostly use the apply  method to create conditional columns in pandas The implementation is shown below We categorize the column as Class A if the entry is less than and Class B otherwise As discussed above the apply  method is basically a glorified for loop As a result it misses the whole point of vectorization Using NumPy s where  method we can create conditional columns while also having vectorization in place With this method the condition is passed as the first argument This is followed by the result if the condition evaluates to True second argument and False third argument As you can see above the np where  method is approximately five times faster Pandas apply vs NumPy select for conditional columnsThe np where  method allows us to choose between two results i e it s for binary conditions If there are multiple conditions  np select  should be used Consider we have the following function With the apply  method we get the following runtime But if we use np select we get The conditions and the corresponding results are passed as the first two arguments The last argument is the default result You can see that the np select  method is five times faster than the apply  method This is because it s using vectorization while the apply  method is looping through the column to create a new column based on the conditions Pandas sort values vs NumPy sort Sorting is a common operation to arrange data in a specific order In pandas we use the df sort values  method to sort a DataFrame With the earlier DataFrame we get the following runtime But NumPy also provides a sorting method More specifically it s the np sort  method Using NumPy we first convert the column we want to sort into a NumPy array Next we sort the obtained array Lastly we create a new DataFrame using the sorted array and rearrange the column entry of the other column The NumPy approach is roughly faster than pandas Best practices for runtime optimization with pandas amp NumPyOptimization is important but it s also important to proceed with caution It s always a good practice to profile your code first so you re aware of the bottlenecks If you optimize your code before profiling it you may end up optimizing the wrong parts making it even slower The biggest bottlenecks in pandas usually come from looping through a DataFrame Thus look for parts that can be replaced with vectorization Additionally getting support from external libraries can offer many benefits as well They re often optimized for performance and can be faster than custom implementations Lastly ensure that you don t compromise the readability of your code for optimization Optimizing your code can sometimes make it less readable which makes it harder for other people to understand and maintain it In general you should only move forward with optimization if you have evidence from profiling that your code is slow and that optimization will lead to a significant performance boost Combine pandas amp NumPy with DeepnoteGet started for free to explore collaborate on and share your 海外TECH Engadget Samsung Galaxy S23+ review: A solid phone that’s probably not worth the upgrade https://www.engadget.com/samsung-galaxy-s23-review-a-solid-phone-thats-probably-not-worth-the-upgrade-173026346.html?src=rss Samsung Galaxy S review A solid phone that s probably not worth the upgradeDespite what companies would like you to believe you don t need to get a new phone every year or two So while Samsung s lineup of its Galaxy S flagship phones may seem underwhelming when compared to the last generation it s not a bad thing that these devices offer little reason to upgrade It s just that after having said the same thing about the models as well as competing phones from Apple and Google it feels hard to be excited about non folding smartphones anymore Like most of the competition Samsung has focused on tweaking the S series camera and software features alongside small adjustments to display and design We ve also got the typical processor upgrade and promised battery life improvements which are objectively good things on paper but in reality don t impact your daily use that much We ve already reviewed the S Ultra which thanks to a large screen onboard S Pen and megapixel camera is aggressively targeted at power users For everyone else looking to get a new Android phone there s the S or the S Samsung hasn t made the smallest model available to review yet so we re focusing on the Plus model here If you re considering Samsung s middle child it s probably only worth it if you re currently using something at least three years old or if you re outside the US DesignOne of the most noticeable changes between the S and its predecessor is this year s cleaned up appearance The two phones are basically the same save for the shiny camera housing on the back of the older model wrapping around the top left corner Samsung introduced this “contour cut housing on the S and I grew to like the aesthetic especially on the lavender and pink versions Looking at the S and S side by side I m ambivalent they re both inoffensive Whether you prefer the cleaner look depends on your personal taste Functionally nothing is too different between the two designs ーthe S wobbles slightly less but that was never a huge deal on the S I liked the lavender color of our review unit as well as the green version I saw at Samsung s hands on event but the cream and black options bore me In terms of physical dimensions the differences between the two generations are negligible They re practically the same weight width and length and exactly the same thickness The S is slimmer and lighter than the Pixel Pro and iPhone Plus though those two have larger displays Display and audioSpeaking of one area that Samsung did somewhat improve on the S is its screen Yes it s mostly the same as before with the same size same FHD resolution and an up to Hz refresh rate By now you probably have heard reviewers like myself extol the virtues of screens with high refresh rates and how great they are for scrolling your Instagram or Reddit feeds The S is no exception Cherlynn Low EngadgetBut it s now capable of hitting up to nits when outdoors compared to nits before meaning it should be easier to read in sunlight There haven t been many sunny days recently so it s been hard to put this to the test But the S still offers a vibrant colorful screen as is typical for Samsung s mobile products nbsp Meanwhile when it comes to audio the Galaxy S is as good as any flagship smartphone That is to say it offers clear vocals and ample volume but is slightly lacking in bass Voices of The Weeknd SZA and Rihanna all sounded clear in the songs that I listened to though the instruments in the latter s cover of Love On The Brain sounded a little messy CamerasThe triple rear camera system on the S is the same as before That is to say its main megapixel sensor is accompanied by a MP telephoto and a MP ultrawide Up front though the S has a new MP sensor with an f aperture and degree field of view Cherlynn Low EngadgetAs a professional pixel peeper I could make out just the slightest difference in sharpness between selfies taken with the S and S specifically in the highlighted strands of my hair There was some distortion in the pictures taken with the older phone whereas the same lines were tack sharp on the MP version Overall though barring some general color temperature variations it was hard to tell the two images apart Compared to the Pixel Pro and the iPhone Pro the S has a slight advantage in retaining detail thanks to its dual pixel autofocus as well I shot some selfies with a friend as we were cackling maniacally one night and Samsung s flagship was the only one that retained the gorgeous greens purples and blues in her hair while capturing every individual strand of her eyelashes You could even see the texture of the pigmentation in her purple eyeshadow The Pixel s MP front camera managed to capture the hues in her hair too but its picture simply wasn t as detailed or clear Meanwhile the iPhone s MP photo barely showed any of the colors in my friend s tresses Though they remain unchanged the S s rear cameras are still pretty capable In most situations with adequate light they deliver pictures that are similar in quality to the Pixel Pro and iPhone Pro My shots of the New York cityscape one overcast day all showed slightly different coloring The S had the deepest brightest blue while the Pixel was the most neutral Samsung s x telephoto lens let me get the closest to faraway buildings and still get crisp pics though Google s algorithms still made for clean results In low light however the Pixel consistently outdid the S with better exposure and retention of clarity in my numerous shots of mouth watering food Whether it s a shiny fried shrimp or a plate of tantalizing scallops the Pixel delivered more even highlights than the S Google s portrait mode also consistently kept subjects in focus although every now and then the S would produce a photo with surprisingly accurate outlines of my subjects While it s not at the same level as Google s or Apple s flagship cameras the S isn t lagging far behind and offers some versatility for those looking to take shots from a distance Performance and battery lifeThis year marks the first time Samsung is using a Snapdragon processor in all variants of the Galaxy S series regardless of where they re bought That means if you were relegated to using a version with Samsung s own Exynos chip in the past getting an S would be a bigger upgrade for you than someone in the US Exynos models have been criticized for performance and battery life drawbacks compared to their Snapdragon counterparts so trading your S in for an S would make more sense in Europe or Asia than in the US The S series is powered by the Snapdragon Gen for Galaxy which is a customized version of Qualcomm s top of the line mobile processor It has slightly higher clock speeds than the regular edition so if this is the only deciding factor for you when choosing between a Galaxy and say a OnePlus then know that this difference is extremely slight Cherlynn Low EngadgetIn daily use the S felt as zippy as any of the new phones I ve tested lately Whether I m dragging and dropping my face between apps learning Japanese on “Hey Japan mindlessly scrolling on Instagram or trying to get into Genshin Impact the S never hiccuped I generally expect pretty smooth performance out of new phones like this so I can t say I m especially impressed and it s probably more realistic to evaluate performance after a few months with the phone I can however talk about how impressive the battery life has been In general the S has matched the Pixel Pro that I also carried around while testing their cameras and both devices stuck around for longer than two days without a charge Granted I wasn t heavily using either during that time mostly whipping them out to take photos and videos throughout the day On our video rundown battery test the S clocked a whopping hours which beats pretty much every phone we tested in as well as the Galaxy S Ultra and OnePlus Wrap upIt might feel like nitpicking but with so few meaningful changes the S doesn t feel like it s worth upgrading to if you re using an S or S That is at least if you re in the US Those who are living with an Exynos version of an older Galaxy flagship will likely find a greater improvement in performance and battery life making it a more worthy upgrade But just because the S isn t chock full of surprises and updates doesn t mean it s not a good phone It still ranks up there as one of the best Android phones around Samsung has consistently delivered capable phones with thoughtful software and features in the last few years and with the S it continues to be a serious contender for those looking for an excellent Android phone
