bought by Netlify The framework is now under the Netlify umbrella alongside Eleventy and SolidJS and will continue to evolve The cloud features including the Valhalla Content Hub will be integrated into Netlify s offerings The new slogan is composable architecture Gatsby is not the most popular React framework right now but I think this acquisition makes sense especially for the content hub and all the CMS integrations they have been working on The Gatsby Cloud offering is harder to adopt than an optional paid features on Netlify and that s even more true for sites that don t use Gatsby as a 海外TECH DEV Community These courses will help you land your first job for less than $100 https://dev.to/albert_hadacek/these-courses-will-help-you-land-your-first-job-for-less-than-100-16ph These courses will help you land your first job for less than Disclaimer I am not earning any commissions from promoting the links in this articleMy tech career started a bit in reversed order I landed my first junior position as a self taught developer Then went to study Computer Science at university while being a part time contractor and eventually managed to work full time during the last year of school as COVID allowed me to pretty much study online Having a degree still has some value and if you are able to get it cheap or for free my case go for it If you are in a position where years of attending classes is not an option I hope the following list of courses might help you to land your first job in tech Just a little note the curriculum I chose focuses on Frontend Full Stack development in JavaScript as that is in my opinion the best route to land a job in the tech space for the following reasons Frontend is constantly evolving so there is a lot of opportunity to catch the field There are plenty of high quality resources and great instructors sharing their knowledge The field is not heavy in mathematics and you don t have to understand all the low level bits of computingIt s rewarding as you see what you are building and even non technical people can interact with your apps which can help you with recruitersThere are roles where knowing some JavaScript CSS and HTML is a big advantage so you can kickstart your career as a tester or work in technical support and grow from there Computer Science BasicsEven though you want to be a front end engineer it makes sense to start with the basics of Computer Science the best course out there is definitely CS by Harvard It s a free course available on YouTube and it introduces you to plenty of cool technologies Unlike many university courses it does not focus on one language It takes a more holistic approach and the instructor David Malan is just a superstar CS by Harvard Website Your First Web Development CourseTo kickstart the learning of web technologies there are in my opinion just two options Either The Web Developer Bootcamp by Colt Steele or The Complete Web Development Bootcamp by Angela Yu These courses are available on the Udemy platform and you can get them for around dollars when on sale pretty often or search for coupons Both of the courses focus on full stack development and offer dozens of hours of great video content and coding challenges The advantage of Angela s course is that it also covers React Yet either of them is a great choice Pick one and finish it The Web Developer Bootcamp by Colt SteeleThe Complete Web Development Bootcamp by Angela Yu React and friendsAfter you finish one of the previous courses you will have enough general knowledge to pick your framework of choice React is the pragmatic choice as it s super popular other popular frameworks like Next js Gatsby or Remix are built on top of it and you can even develop Shopify apps or Hydrogen themes using it Potentially you can go with Vue js or Angular but my recommendation is React Here we have three great options Colt s course again or courses by another duo of talented instructors Stephen Grider and Maximilian Schwarzmüller The latter courses also teach you about the state management library Redux I have personal experience with all three of them and for the bucks you won t find anything better The Modern React Bootcamp by Colt SteeleReact The Complete Guide by Maximilian SchwarzmüllerModern React with Redux by Stephen GriderIf you want to keep focusing on full stack and you are tired of videos this free online course by the University of Helsinki is a no brainer One step furtherAt this point you should have a good grasp of how web applications work and have solid foundations in the React framework Now it s time to boost your resume with buzzwords Most companies use TypeScript which is a language developed by Microsoft that makes JavaScript a strongly typed language Eventually it gets compiled back to JavaScript yet it makes development smoother as you get better hints from your IDE and it helps you avoid silly mistakes Mastering TypeScript by Colt SteeleReact itself is cool yet you need routing server side rendering etc…You can set it up yourself or you can take advantage of Next js a full stack React base framework If you wanna build a serious application for your portfolio Next should be your go to Complete Next js Developer by ZTMGraphQL is another tool that is gaining lots of popularity and replacing the standard REST API architecture Knowing the basics of it will definitely gonna shine on your resume GraphQL with React by Stephen GriderLastly each aspiring developer should be comfortable with the versioning system Git It s the industry standard and you will definitely use it in your first work The Git amp Github Bootcamp by Colt Steele Coding InterviewSome companies like to interview candidates using questions about essential data structures and algorithms It s a bit different from day to day development and even seasoned developers have to sit down and review these topics So if you are applying for a job make sure you spend some time studying common data structures and algorithms First look at one of the following courses they both follow the “standard college level Algorithms amp Data Structure module yet they are way more fun I promise they are actually fun in comparison to my sixty year old college professor who obviously forced us to use the C programming language Master the Coding Interview by ZTMJS Algorithms and Data Structures Masterclass by Colt SteeleWhen you are comfortable with the basics of DS amp A focus on solving problems using that knowledge Leetcode is your best friend and if you struggle the last course I am gonna mention goes over the classical Leetcode problems in depth Master the Coding Interview Big Tech FAANG Interviews by ZTM Honorable MentionI wanted to keep the resources as affordable as possible The mentioned courses offer an incredible amount of value for dollars each Yet if you wanna invest a bit more definitely check Frontend Masters Again I gain no money from promoting this subscription service yet I have been using it for the past two years and if you wanna level up from junior to senior that s the place to go The pricing is around a month and if you are a college student you can get months for free due to the GitHub Student Developer Pack 2023-03-01 14:31:05

海外TECH DEV Community Closing, Cloning, or Disabling the Shadow DOM https://dev.to/jenc/closing-cloning-or-disabling-the-shadow-dom-2m00 Closing Cloning or Disabling the Shadow DOMIf you have been furiously trying to figure out how to close disable or extrapolate the contents of the shadow DOM for any following reasons to prevent encapsulated styles from being manipulated by developers or content folks using your web componentto secure sensitive code from being exposed to consumersin order to support light DOM because for whatever reason your stakeholder or client believes that the shadow DOM must be eradicated and through any means you must turn the web component into a normal component and somehow someone s already decided to use web componentsTL DR DON T DO IT For folks familiar with web components this may seem like an arcane task that s doomed to fail but I ve been asked to do some version of the above twice in my short career The title was just search bait This is the real article Reasons Why You Should NOT Close Clone Or Disable the Shadow DOMNote I used Fast Design to try out the above while doing my research Browser APIs prevent disabling attachment of a shadow rootThe CustomElementRegistry define specification specifically prevents the use of static disabledFeature from being applied to disable the attachment of shadow root on a web component Your console will return a DOMException NotSupportedError Browser APIs don t support cloningThe instant developer sensibility when I heard the client desire to convert shadow DOM children to light DOM ones well you gotta parse and transform DOM slotted nodes into generic HTML elements then move them into the light DOM right With that we reach for Element cloneNode and we ll find the error NotSupported ShadowRoot nodes are not clonable Here are the exact Chrome and and Chromium tests preventing that At this point I should have probably stopped but I didn t Oh no being unable to accept failure when presented with heroic feats of front end I just have to see where this goes Even though I couldn t clone the shadow root node I was able to grab its children parse and transform them into HTML elements and reattach them to their rightful parent Easy win right IT WORKED IN MY DOM But no Utter failure I get a flash of working web component As the shadow DOM remains open styles continue to be scoped towards shadow DOM elements looking to scope those styles towards flattened projected content Cloning and moving shadow DOM children nodes transforming slots to HTML elements and attaching them to their light DOM parent element also easily re trigger lifecycle events via changing the position of items within the DOM And I had to do all the above within the class constructor because that s where a shadow root is attached I had thrown in a setTimeout to prevent race conditions between the constructor operations and the component registration in the DOM This led to multiple re renders and attachments go figure moving the DOM order of children in a component is going to trigger connectedCallback again and again Well all the above required keeping the shadow DOM open cloning the shadow tree parsing it then to close it all within runtime As long as the shadow DOM remained open styles continue to be scoped towards This leads to my next epiphany Opening or Closing Shadow DOM on Runtime ImpossibleIn my previous example I kept the shadow DOM open cloned and transformed its children to light DOM nodes and tried to close it as a final act to disable the shadow DOM so that my children could render with their new light DOM styles I made another attempt at using the shiny new experimental declarative shadowroot API that s only available in Chrome currently on a template Both were resounding failures Why The shadow mode is set once on class instantiationIf open the shadow DOM can t be closed during runtime as the constructor that instantiates the attachment of a shadow root determines the open or close mode it is attached to the web component on instantiation You re going to get this error Uncaught DOMException Failed to execute createShadowRoot on Element Shadow root cannot be created on a host which already hosts a shadow tree Once a shadow mode is attached and connected it can t be closed or deleted but you can attach new ones A Closed Shadow DOM doesn t secure sensitive codeIf you want to hide your styles and prevent them from being altered by whoever s using the components fiiinee This is definitely a way to prevent folks from adding extraneous classes to the component in the light DOM Writing on shadow DOM V Eric Bidelman warns of how the functional and style encapsulation of shadow DOM can be misunderstood as a security measure Closed shadow roots are not very useful Some developers will see closed mode as an artificial security feature But let s be clear it s not Closed mode simply prevents outside JS from drilling into an element s internal DOM A black hatter could still inject malicious code into the component constructor Ditch Shadow DOM Lose Thy Scoped StylesAs a result of disabling the shadow DOM or converting its children to light DOM elements you lose the very benefit it offers in web components scoped styles Hypothetically you could use adoptedStylesheets to replace a pre existing scoped styles with your new light DOM styles but you ll have to figure out how to style your DOM to avoid conflicting styles in global CSS namespace That s a lot of work to do for something you already did once Now you need sets of styles to alternate between One that supports scoped styles and the other that supports light DOM styles Why would you do double the work SummaryMost components in web applications and on websites are based in Javascript While React and Angular use a series of functions to abstract the creation and rendering of components in client side applications web components leverage browser based APIs and HTML standards Would you attempt to re engineer how React handles children as slots or change the way React createElement works in the same way I tried to close the shadow DOM or make it s children work in the light DOM I hope not Customizing a technology to do the opposite of how it works on command usually ends in increasing friction with the mechanisms that make it behave the way it does If web components was already made as a choice for build once use everywhere then your next spikes might be What can I do within the environment s I m integrating this in to overcome perceived barriers of shadow DOM What can I do with the existing features and APIs of the framework I m using with web components it may be the framework you re using If you re working in vanilla JS it s most definitely browser APIs Let me know what you ve tried Thanks to Tebin Raouf tebin Simon Macdonald macdonst for programmatic support and guidance along the way Related Reading The question of removing the shadow DOM or creating the topic has been reported at the webcomponents polyfills repository under issue and svelte sveltjs issue E Bidelman Shadow DOM v Self Contained Web Components Web dev by Chrome 海外TECH Engadget The best soundbars for 2023 https://www.engadget.com/best-soundbars-143041791.html?src=rss The best soundbars for It s no secret that the built in speakers in most TVs are trash They don t project enough sound out to the front so you can hear well ーespecially subtle details Thankfully you don t have to splurge for a five speaker or more surround sound setup to fix the problem In most living rooms a single soundbar and maybe a subwoofer will suffice To help guide your shopping spree we ve compiled a list of everything to look for when searching for the best soundbar for you along with a list of the top picks for a range of budgets What to look for in a soundbarFeaturesWhen it comes to features the more you pay the more you re going to get Most affordable options or less will improve your television s audio but that s about it Step into the to range and you ll find a smart soundbar with things like built in voice control wireless connectivity Chromecast AirPlay and even Android TV They re all helpful when you want to avoid looking for the remote but the best audio quality is usually only in the top tier and the formats those premium devices support I m talking about things like Dolby Atmos DTS X and other high resolution audio standards These are what you ll want to look for if truly immersive sound is what you crave for your living room setup And not all Atmos soundbars are equal so you ll need to look at the finer details carefully before you break into the savings account PortsSonyThis is a big one A lot of the more affordable soundbars have limited options when it comes to connectivity They either offer an optical port or one HDMI jack and if you re lucky both Things get slightly better in the mid range section but that s not always the case The Sonos Beam for example is but only has a single HDMI port If you want to connect your set top box gaming console and more directly to your soundbar for the best possible audio you ll likely want to look for an option with at least two HDMI eARC inputs HDMI connections are essential for things like Dolby Atmos DTS X and other high res and immersive audio formats And with the HDMI spec soundbars can support HDR K and K passthrough to make these speakers an even better companion for a game console ChannelsAnother big thing you ll want to pay attention to is channels That s the or other decimal number that companies include in product descriptions The first figure corresponds to the number of channels A two would just be left and right while a more robust Atmos system especially one with rear satellite speakers could be five or seven left right center and upward The second number refers to the subwoofer so if your soundbar comes with one or has them built in you ll see a one here The third numeral is up firing speakers important for the immersive effect of Dolby Atmos Not all Atmos enabled units have them but if they do the third number will tell you how many are in play WirelessSonyMost soundbars these days offer either Bluetooth WiFi or both When it comes to WiFi that connectivity affords you luxuries like voice control either built in or with a separate device Chromecast Spotify Connect and AirPlay Depending on your preferences you might be able to live without some of these For me AirPlay and Chromecast are essentials but the rest I can live without Those two give me the ability to beam music and podcasts from my go to apps without having to settle for ーor struggle with ーa Bluetooth connection SizeThis one might seem obvious but humor me for a minute Nothing is more soul crushing than getting a pricey soundbar in your living room only to discover you have to rearrange everything to find a spot for it This was my plight when the Sennheiser Ambeo Soundbar arrived at my door Yes that speaker is absurdly large and heavy and most soundbars aren t nearly as big I learned a valuable lesson Make sure the space where you want to put a soundbar will accommodate the thing you re about to spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars on Basically it all comes down to the TV you have or are planning to get and what the primary goal is for your living room audio Is it ease of use Do you want the best possible sound from a single speaker or speaker sub combo Do you just want to be able to actually hear your TV better Or do you want to turn your living room into an immersive home theater with surround sound By paying attention to each of those areas you should have a good idea of what to look for in a soundbar soundbar sub combo or a more robust setup With that said we ve put numerous products through their paces at Engadget and have a few favorites for best soundbar at various price points to get you started Best premium soundbar Sony HT ASony has a long track record of excellent high end soundbars and its latest is another great sounding product The A is a robust Dolby Atmos soundbar capable of immersive audio thanks to Sony s Sound Mapping Sound Field Optimization vertical surround technology and S Force Pro front surround There s a lot of tech at work here and I haven t even mentioned Reality Audio or DSEE Extreme upscaling both handy when it comes to listening to music Speaking of audio you ll have the option of using Chromecast Spotify Connect or Apple AirPlay to send your tunes to the A Two HDMI eARC inputs mean you can hook up multiple streaming boxes or gaming consoles And thanks to HDMI support you can expect K and K passthrough to your television so the A is a great option for gamers This soundbar is expensive at and it doesn t come with a separate subwoofer though it does have one built in However Sony does give you multiple options for both a sub and rear satellite speakers The SA SW sub is while the SA SW is For rear speakers the SA RSS is while the truly wireless and much better looking SA RS set is If you re looking to save some money on the soundbar itself Sony offers the HT A for although we ve seen it on sale for recently It packs nearly all of the same bells and whistles as the A only in a channel configuration Runner up premium soundbar Sonos ArcThe top end of Sonos home theater lineup was well overdue for a refresh by the time the company introduced the Arc in This unit replaced the Playbar that debuted in offering directional sound via Dolby Atmos as the main upgrade The Arc sports a more modern design stellar sound quality and all of Sonos smarts including the ability to automatically calibrate to your living room and when you add more speakers The price doesn t include a sub but the Playbar didn t come with one either And sadly Sonos doesn t include a second HDMI jack for directly connecting devices other than your TV As is typically the case with the company s wares expansion gets expensive quickly as the wireless sub is and satellite One speakers are each However the combination of the Arc and a sub will get you pretty far sound wise even if they are separate purchases Plus the smaller and more affordable Sub Mini works well with the company s most premium soundbar and it clocks in at Another premium option Bowers amp Wilkins Panorama Bowers amp Wilkins introduced its first Dolby Atmos soundbar back in March filling a void in the company s existing home theater lineup The Panorama has a channel configuration but it packs total speakers including two subwoofers and watts of sonic power For that reason the company doesn t think you ll need a dedicated sub Indeed the Panorama does offer ample bass but it s not nearly on the level as a standalone unit This smart soundbar does have a low profile refined design alongside voice capabilities “hidden until lit touch controls and support for aptX Adaptive Apple AirPlay and Spotify Connect Most importantly it s currently available for less than the original MSRP at Best midrange soundbar Sonos BeamSolid sound quality Check Dolby Atmos Yep Compact and easy to set up Uh huh Compatible with other Sonos products for a more robust system You betcha The first gen Sonos Beam has been one of our favorites since it arrived in but there was one thing it didn t have Dolby Atmos That was the big addition to the model though it s a bit limited since the Beam doesn t have any upward firing speakers Sonos manages to make things seem more directional by tweaking audio timing and frequency instead of adding more drivers The new Beam still only has the one HDMI port which means you won t be connecting a gaming console or set top box directly to this It also means that if you have an older TV with an optical jack you ll need an adapter Runner up midrange soundbar Samsung HW QBSamsung s mid range QB will cost you but it comes with a bundled subwoofer This model also supports wireless Dolby Atmos connectivity with the latest Samsung smart TVs over WiFi and the channel configuration includes up firing speakers for proper immersive sound The QB supports Q Symphony which allows you to use both the soundbar and your TV speakers for a more robust surround sound setup on some and Samsung TVs SpaceFit Sound automatically calibrates the soundbar sub combo to a room Adaptive Sound optimizes audio for specific content types and Tap Sound allows you to send tunes from a Samsung phone to the QB with a simple tap HDMI eARC connectivity is here as well and so is voice control AirPlay Chromecast and a gaming specific audio mode Another midrange option Sonos RaySonos latest soundbar may be its most affordable to date but at it s not exactly a budget pick Especially when you consider there are cheaper options that come with a subwoofer Still the compact design doesn t command a lot of space in front of your TV making it a great option for smaller living spaces The Ray is easy to set up and provides great sound quality for both TV and music There are some trade offs when it comes to the immersive nature of the audio but it s a good option for upgrading your TV sound with minimal fuss Best budget soundbar Vizio Vt JIf you re looking for a way to improve your TV sound on a budget Vizio has some solid options With the Vt J you get a channel setup in a compact soundbar and inch wireless sub combo for This would be a great choice if you don t want your add on TV speaker to take up a lot of space There s no WiFi connectivity but that s really the only sacrifice when it comes to the basics HDMI ARC eARC and optical connections link to your television while a mm aux jack and Bluetooth allow you to play music from your phone or another 海外TECH Engadget 14 relaxing video games to help you destress https://www.engadget.com/best-relaxing-video-games-140048572.html?src=rss relaxing video games to help you destressIn recent years we ve seen an influx of self proclaimed “cozy games video games explicitly designed to invoke good vibes Being cozy however isn t the same as being good To help those who could use some help winding down we ve rounded up a selection of games that purposefully deemphasize fail states violence overwhelming grinds intense competition and other aggressive urges but aren t overly cute for the sake of it or so stripped down that they re boring Stardew ValleyApart from being one of our favorite couch co op games the farming life sim Stardew Valley is also notable for its relaxing qualities It s a game that s willing to meet you at your pace If you want to putter around your farm casually chat up townsfolk brew beer or fish for a few hours you can On the flipside if you want to turn your land into a model of ruthless efficiency as soon as possible the experience will be more overwhelming and the story will have a darker undercurrent It all starts a bit slow but there s no external force rushing you and the game s trajectory of progress always points upward It s an alternate little life one that gives you the choice to take it easy Buy for Switch PS Xbox PCLength hoursTetris EffectTetris Effect is in essence a prettier version of the falling block puzzle game that has compelled the globe since the mid s Its spacey pop soundtrack and themed boards have an ethereal almost spiritual quality one that fits neatly with the trance like condition Tetris can induce This helps explain where the title comes from To be clear Tetris is not the most relaxing game in the abstract The way it makes you scramble to fix your past decisions is part of its magic and several modes in Tetris Effect specifically thrive on stress Others however are explicitly designed to tap into the game s zen aspects “Chill Marathon for one simply resets your score upon failure instead of giving you a game over And since Tetris itself comes as second nature to an unusually large amount of people we ll make an exception for it here It can be difficult but even in failure Tetris Effect induces a mind freeing state like few games can Buy for Switch PS PS Xbox PC Meta QuestDorfromantikDorfromantik nbsp is a puzzle game in which you lay down tiles to create an idyllic countryside The tiles come in distinct types forests fields rivers railroads little houses and so on The idea is to chain similar pieces together and the game will give you little “quests to connect a certain number of matching tiles to grow your overall stack Since you can only see a few tiles at once exactly what your landscape looks like differs from game to game The need to keep gaining tiles creates a contingent sort of pressure but even still Dorfromantik is a game that encourages slowness There s no time limit and no way to even really “win You re led to consider each piece look at the land and see how it all fits When the tiles run out you ve usually created a beautiful little scene And if you just want to build a landscape without any restrictions there s a separate mode for that Buy for Switch PCA Short HikeA Short Hike is a lovely little adventure game that is completely in tune with itself You play as Claire a young bird in a world of anthropomorphic animals who is staying in a small yet bustling provincial park Something is weighing on her and she needs to make a phone call but the only place with cellular reception is the top of the mountain at the park s center Your only real objective in the two hour game is to get her there There is a conventional core to A Short Hike that involves doing light fetch quests for other park goers and collecting golden feathers to climb higher and double jump more But most of these tasks are straightforward and it quickly becomes apparent that you can literally soar around most of the park as you please taking in the sights and interacting with the other park visitors as they go about their lives Apart from simply feeling nice this freedom ties beautifully into the game s themes That mountain is calling but you don t have to climb it right away When you do the world will still be there for you to explore Buy for Switch PS Xbox PCLength hoursCaptain Toad Treasure TrackerCaptain Toad Treasure Tracker is an adorable puzzle platformer from Nintendo that has you navigate a series of contained diorama like levels each with a gold star at its end It s technically a spin off of the Super Mario games but here you can t jump Instead you need to explore the game s densely packed spaces from new angles shifting the camera to find hidden pathways and bonus treasures The whole thing is neither overlong nor super difficult but it is determined in that delightful Nintendo way to constantly hit you with new ideas each as playful and meticulous as the last While it doesn t reach the creative heights of the best Mario games ーsome of which were developed by the same team ーit is similarly amiable and more easygoing Buy for SwitchLength hoursDesert GolfingDesert Golfing nbsp is exactly what its title says and nothing more There is a ball a hole and some procedurally generated desert land in between That s it No par no club selection no music no items no pause menu no restarts not even a physical avatar Only dragging a cursor back to determine the next shot s angle and power and an attempt to get A to B Once you do a new hole appears and you go on infinitely The game technically has an “ending but may God have mercy on anyone who plays long enough to see it Desert Golfing reads as overly simple on paper and sure it makes sense as a sneaky critique of time sucking player debasing mobile games Actually playing it though borders on meditative The game s radical minimalism makes everything and nothing matter all at once There s a shot counter at the top but it s functionally meaningless merely signifying how long you ve played You may spend shots on one hole but there s no invisible eye judging you Instead you re allowed to focus entirely on the simple pleasure of arcing a ball through the air seeing it kick up sand and eventually making it plonk in the hole It s about the act of play more than the rules of a game golfing not golf And when something new does pop up ーa well of water a setting sun a cactus ーit feels momentous Buy for PC iOS AndroidThe RampMuch like Desert Golfing The Ramp is a successful experiment in minimalism It s a skateboarding game but its approach is a far cry from the Tony Hawk series It doesn t burden you with high scores skill points objectives camera adjustments or a HUD and it respects you enough to unlock all of its courses and characters after a brief tutorial While it takes a moment to get the hang of its controls The Ramp excels at conveying the joy of motion and momentum in vert skating from launching at speed to that brief moment of weightlessness in the sky to the rush of gravity pulling you back down There s a handful of tricks to pull off some chill music to help set the tone and no real penalty for biffing it The Ramp doesn t have much “depth by conventional gaming standards its developer describes it as a “digital toy which sounds about right But what it does it does well and it s uncompromising in its focus Buy for Switch PCEuro Truck Simulator Euro Truck Simulator lets you drive a bunch of big trucks across a condensed version of Europe delivering cargo and eventually growing your own trucking business It s a simulator not a GTA game so you re expected to follow traffic laws refuel your vehicle and complete your deliveries on time with as little damage as possible It doesn t have the gentlest learning curve and its management elements aren t as interesting as the actual trucking But Euro Truck Simulator s pleasures are similar to those of real life driving cruising down a long road tapping your thumb to the radio checking out the scenery going where the route takes you You ll get there when you get there As an aside All of this is most fun with a wheel but one isn t required Buy for PCLength hoursWide Ocean Big JacketThere s been no shortage of easy to play “walking simulators in recent years but Wide Ocean Big Jacket stands out among them for telling a particularly warm short story It s crudely animated and maybe an hour long but it develops more identifiable and human characters in that time than most big budget games do in hours The story follows the camping trip of a young couple Brad and Cloanne their year old niece Mord and her friend Ben and the subsequent lessons they learn about love and each other It has the air of an indie comedy a little quirky funny but not mean spirited honest but not long winded and moving when it s time to bring the story home Its world isn t ending and there s no combat It s a game about these characters in this specific moment and it s presented like a series of memories something its bold colors amplify The game s approach to interactivity plays a big role in selling all of this Instead of merely controlling a specific character you re often in charge of the camera a sort of director role that brings you closer to each scene but distances you the player from the action or what qualifies as action in this case Buy for Switch PCLength hourHidden FolksHidden Folks is like a digital take on those Where s Waldo nbsp puzzle books you might ve had as a kid It presents you with a series of living scenes each brimming with detail and micro narratives You get a set of things to uncover and once you find enough you can move to the next stage The monochrome art is hand drawn and all the sound effects derive from people s voices It s cute intimate and often funny Trying to find the proverbial needle in a haystack may get frustrating if you re in the wrong headspace but this is a game that demands you slow down and be patient There s no rush nobody on the screen is going anywhere Buy for Switch PC iOS AndroidLength hoursPowerWash SimulatorYou know those oddly satisfying YouTube videos of people deep cleaning rugs driveways old electronics and the like PowerWash Simulator is the video game version of those You take on a range of power washing jobs around the town of “Muckingham slowly but steadily erasing the grime from various objects in each gig There s no time limit or score to meet and each dirty thing has a corresponding progress bar to complete There s more meat to PowerWash Simulator than you might expect You can earn money to spend on upgraded power washing equipment and there s a narrative mode that goes places literally and metaphorically It probably doesn t need to do quite as much as it does but PowerWash Simulator s pleasures are layered the immediate satisfaction of making dirty things pristine and the larger one of systematically “working toward a job well done Buy for Switch PS PS Xbox PCLength hoursUnpackingUnpacking nbsp is a stripped down puzzler about unpacking boxes You methodically work your way through each collection of knick knacks placing them around different rooms in a sequence of homes The game is nearly wordless but it manages to tell a story almost entirely through its isometric environments The boxes you unpack all belong to the same character and each move takes place in a different year of their life This combined with the pixelated visuals gives the game a vaguely wistful tone Unpacking is still a puzzle game so it ll make items glow red until you put them in a “correct location This feels like a misstep If I want to leave my bookbag off to the side of my bed and just be done with things why can t I Isn t moving messy Still even if Unpacking is a bit too gamified there s a quiet catharsis to its fantasy of putting everything in its right place If nothing else it s far less stressful than moving in real life Buy for Switch PS PS Xbox PCLength hoursPlease Touch the ArtworkPlease Touch the Artwork is a set of three earnest puzzle games each inspired by abstract art The specifics of the games differ One has you mechanically recreate Mondrian style paintings another turns Broadway Boogie Woogie into a little love story and the third reframes New York City as a metaphor for adjusting to life in well a big new city Only the first can get particularly difficult but the game tells you right upfront that it s made to be a low stress experience with no timers and hints and redo buttons there if you need them What intrigues about Please Touch the Artwork isn t what it says about De Stijl nbsp and abstract art as if such works could ever be “solved Rather it s what it conveys about the experience of taking in art itself and how close it brings you to the lone developer Thomas Waterzooi behind the game The whole project has an intensely personal feel like peering into someone s brain and seeing how this kind of art speaks to them Some may see that as unbearably pretentious but even on a mechanical level Please Touch the Artwork is welcoming bold and sincere Buy for Switch PC iOS AndroidLength hoursZen Bound Like most games on this list Zen Bound nbsp has a simple premise You get a rope and a series of D sculptures and your goal is to wrap the rope around each sculpture until it s covered completely coating it with paint in the process The sculptures themselves can be more difficult than they first seem however with many hidden gaps and sharp angles Playing Zen Bound demands slow contemplation almost like meditating on the object you re binding This in turn may lead you to reflect on the physical nuances of the things you tie yourself to in real life But even if that sounds pompous just know that Zen Bound offers a thoughtful way to zone out Buy for Switch PCLength hoursThis article originally appeared on Engadget at
