Notes On The Job Market For Frontend Programmers |
https://dev.to/bytebodger/notes-on-the-job-market-for-frontend-programmers-29de
|
Notes On The Job Market For Frontend ProgrammersMy regular readers both of them may remember that at about this time last year I was hired at Amazon But this year on January th Amazon jettisoned people I was one of them Although this was a severe blow to my mental health when it happened trust me when I say that I m not upset right now Not at all Sh happens But it does mean that I ve been wading through the job market now for the last few months And what I ve found has been interesting To say the least The following are some of my observations for the occasionally surprising ways in which the job market feels very different than the last time that I was actively looking for a job DisclaimersLet s get some disclaimers out of the way First I m a very senior dev working out of the US based job market I ve doing this for a quarter century So I don t claim for a second that these observations will apply to other levels of experience or that they ll apply to other countries Second although I ve been actively looking for the last few months I can t possibly assume that my experience will mirror that of other devs Even if they re like me very senior and they re operating like me from within the US So obviously your mileage on these observations may vary Third I ve primarily become a frontend dev by choice So it s perfectly possible that my experiences may not map to those who are backend devs or devops specialists or any other flavor of devs Finally I wanna make it clear that this post isn t me whining about the job market There are still plenty of jobs out there And believe me I ll be just fine But it s a little surpising even jarring to see how things have changed lately Beating the streets I ve grown incredibly spoiled as a senior dev in the last decade or so The last coupla times I moved jobs I barely had to apply anywhere I was constantly hit up by recruiters who always wanted to know if I was interested in new opportunities Whenever I even thought that I might be interested in a new role all I needed to do was to simply ANSWER the many inquiries that I typically received from recruiters The stream of recruiter inquiries was near constant whether I currently had a good job or not But lately I ve found that the pipeline of unsolicited recruiter inquiries has slowed to a trickle To be clear I m not claiming that I never receive unsolicited inquiries from recruiters But it definitely has not been the unfettered waterfall of solicitations that I m accustomed to receiving And if all I did was sit back on my couch and wait for someone to contact me then I d probably be sitting here with little or nothing to do Of course this is not shocking Not only did Amazon jettison a huge swath of highly qualified engineers So too did Meta and Google and Microsoft and Twitter and a whole host of other huge tech companies In January I read an estimate that k tech workers had been dumped into the market I assume that at this point that number is actually much higher I also wanna be clear that I m not griping about this It is what it is And in the long run I ll be just fine But I certainly empathize with anyone who s found the job market to be umm challenging lately StratificationI ve noticed a rather odd stratifying of the job market these days I remember a time not too long ago when it seemed like most of the senior frontend jobs that I saw advertised all fell within a certain band Specifically the US market seemed to value most senior devs somewhere between k and k Yes there were always outliers like the big FAANG companies that offered far more But for most established companies that needed frontend help it felt like they were bunching their offers together in a tight band But now that band seems to have been blown to smithereens I ve seen numerous job postings that advertise comp in the low to mid s I ve also seen many posts that advertise jobs in the low to mid s Heck just yesterday I was looking through job postings and saw a listing for a senior frontend dev requiring eight years of solid experience that purported to pay And yes I know how privileged this may sound to some folks I have many friends in completely different career fields who would kill to have a job that offers k k But for senior frontend programming help that just feels outright silly to me The employee contractor disconnectI m accustomed to contract work paying a premium over regular fulltime employee work The assumption is that contractors are treated as more throwaway They often receive lesser or no benefits And they re usually the first people let go when a company decides to tighten its belt The trade off is that contractors usually receive a higher hourly wage But that trade off seems from my perspective to be broken now I ve been talking to companies about potential fulltime jobs that range in the mid to upper s Yet every single time someone has contacted me about a potential contractor role the rate has been anywhere from hr on the high end to as low as hr on the low end Why in the world would I consider being a contractor at a rate that s equal to or less than what I can get as a fulltime employee Side note It s borderline comical to me that I ve been contacted repeatedly about a frontend contracting job at Amazon They specifically want someone with prior Amazon experience But they re steadfast in offering a maximum of hr Every time someone s contacted me about this opportunity I ve told them that I m simply not interested The return of college degree requirementsAs an entirely self taught developer I ve always had a certain disdain for companies that wanna use a year degree as a filtering mechanism Luckily for the last years this has hardly been a problem Because most companies were desperate enough for programming talent and because most were understanding of the fact that some people have learned all of this stuff without ever going to college nearly all open positions stated that you needed a computer science degree or equivalent experience But lately I ve seen far more companies that have a year degree as a hard limit to entry FWIW I actually have a degree But it s an Associates degree In electronics To be clear I m not claiming that there aren t still plenty of opportunities for the self taught crowd And I m not claiming that anywhere near all online applications require you to have a Bachelors in Computer Science And I also understand that when your applicant pool starts to grow to epic numbers you look for any way to filter out candidates But it s still disheartening to see the number of companies that are falling back on this lame non indicator of developer skills Sea of applicantsMore than anything it s just apparent to me that there are a lot of people in the applicant pool these days While the US unemployment rate is currently quite low it s clear that the unemployment rate amongst developers must still be fairly high This is evident to me from the many job postings for which I m extremely qualified At the risk of sounding arrogant the simple fact is that I have a stellar CV I have a solid CV portfolio site I have a long history of tech blogging on this site I have a boffo GitHub presence I have numerous NPM packages that I ve written and maintain I have full fledged React apps that I maintain in the wild and Nevertheless I frequently apply for positions that are soliciting senior React frontend devs And yet I find that mere hours or minutes after submitting my application I receive a form letter stating that I m no longer under consideration Although I know better than to waste any mental energy trying to dissect exactly why I was eliminated from any particular job posting sometimes you can t help but wonder If my CV wasn t enough to warrant even a follow up conversation what exactly were you looking for C est la vieIf any of this comes across as woe is me hand wringing believe me It s not I ll be just fine And I am talking to companies now about putative future roles But it s definitely interesting to me to see the state of the current job market Of course these things are cyclical And a few years from now everything will probably be right back to where it was But you may find some value in the insights I ve been gathering over the last coupla months Take care out there |

Sending E mails in PHP with PHPMailerIntroductionRequirementsSetupSending Emails with PHPMailer IntroductionWelcome to this tutorial on how to send emails using PHP Communication is key and emails are an essential part of keeping in touch with your users In this article we will walk through the process of sending emails using PHP and PHPMailer a powerful library for sending emails in PHP We ll also cover how to configure PHPMailer to use SMTP which is the most common way of sending emails on the web We understand that setting up emails can be daunting but don t worry We ll guide you through each step in a friendly and professional manner ensuring you have everything you need to get started As an added bonus we ll show you how to use environment variables in this project a useful technique for securely storing sensitive information like passwords and API keys So whether you re a beginner or a seasoned developer let s dive in and learn how to send emails with PHP RequirementsTo follow this tutorial you will need the following installed on your computer PHP version or higher ComposerA text editor e g VS Code Git optional SetupFirst clone the repository for this tutorial into an empty repository or download the source code and unzip git clone Next navigate into the project directory and install the dependencies using Composer cd sending mails with phpmailer composer installThis installs a couple of dependencies for us PHPMailer the library we will use to send emails DotEnv a popular library that allows us to use environment variables in our project Great point Before we proceed with the email sending process we need to create a env file in the root directory of our project This file will contain the environment variables that we ll use throughout our project such as our SMTP credentials and email recipient addresses To load the env file we ll use the Dotenv Dotenv class We ll call the load method to load the contents of the env file into our project To make things even simpler we recommend copying the contents of the env example file into the env file This way you ll have a template for the environment variables you ll need and you can fill in the appropriate values for your project With that done we ll be ready to move on to the next step and start sending emails with PHPMailer Sending Emails with PHPMailerFirstly navigate to the root directory of our project in your text editor and create a new file called index php Next we ll need to require the vendor autoload php file that was automatically generated by Composer when we installed our dependencies This file contains all the dependencies that we installed and allows us to use them in our project To do this we ll add the following line of code at the top of our index php file lt phprequire once vendor autoload php This code will include the autoload php file located in the vendor directory of our project With this done we ll be able to use PHPMailer and any other dependencies that we ve installed using Composer Using Environment Variables You can Skip this partUsing environment variables is a best practice for protecting sensitive information such as credentials from being exposed in source control To use environment variables in our project we first need to load the env file To do this we can use the Dotenv Dotenv class and call the createImmutable method to create a new instance of the class We ll pass in the DIR constant as an argument to specify the current directory as the base directory for our project require autoload php omitted for brevity dotenv Dotenv Dotenv createImmutable DIR dotenv gt load username ENV USERNAME By using environment variables we can keep sensitive information secure and prevent it from being exposed in our source code Import the necessary classes for PHPMailer by adding the following lines to the top of your index php file Import PHPMailer classes and exceptionsuse PHPMailer PHPMailer PHPMailer use PHPMailer PHPMailer Exception use PHPMailer PHPMailer SMTP Then we can proceed with the rest of the code in our index php file require autoload php omitted for brevity Create a new instance of PHPMailer mail new PHPMailer true try Server settings mail gt SMTPDebug SMTP DEBUG SERVER Enable verbose debug output mail gt isSMTP Send using SMTP mail gt Host ENV SMTP HOST Set the SMTP server to send through mail gt SMTPAuth true Enable SMTP authentication mail gt Username ENV SMTP USERNAME SMTP username mail gt Password ENV SMTP PASSWORD SMTP password mail gt SMTPSecure PHPMailer ENCRYPTION SMTPS Enable SSL encryption mail gt Port ENV SMTP PORT TCP port to connect to use for PHPMailer ENCRYPTION STARTTLS above Recipients mail gt setFrom from example com Mailer mail gt addAddress johndoe example com John Doe Add a recipient Content mail gt isHTML true Set email format to HTML mail gt Subject Here is the subject mail gt Body This is the HTML message body lt b gt in bold lt b gt mail gt AltBody This is the body in plain text for non HTML mail clients mail gt send echo Message has been sent catch Exception e echo Message could not be sent Mailer Error mail gt ErrorInfo In this code we create a new instance of PHPMailer and configure its settings to send an email We set the SMTPDebug property to SMTP DEBUG SERVER to enable verbose debug output which is useful for testing and troubleshooting We set the isSMTP property to true to indicate that we will send the email using SMTP We then set the SMTP server to send through the SMTP authentication credentials and the encryption settings These values are loaded from the env file using the ENV superglobal array Next we set the recipients of the email using the setFrom and addAddress methods We set the email format to HTML using the isHTML method and then set the subject and body of the email using the Subject Body and AltBody properties Finally we call the send method to send the email If the email is sent successfully we output a message to the user If there is an error we output a message with the error information I hope this helps you send emails in PHP using PHPMailer |

How CodeCatalyst compares to other AWS Services related to Development and CI/CD processes |
https://dev.to/aws-builders/how-codecatalyst-compares-to-other-aws-services-related-to-development-and-cicd-processes-3na5
|
How CodeCatalyst compares to other AWS Services related to Development and CI CD processesAt re Invent AWS announced Amazon CodeCatalyst and as you might have read on my blog or seen on my YouTube Channel I have been playing around with the service a lot A few days ago Brian asked me a few interesting questions one of them being What s the diff between CodeCatalyst and AppComposer Brian Tarbox AWS HeroLately we had a Community Builders session with the Amazon CodeCatalyst team and similar questions came up in regards to comparing CodeCatalyst with other already existing services And to be honest the amount of AWS services that are related to building managing or deploying software projects on AWS has grown a lot in the last years and it gets difficult to keep an overview of how these services play together and which tool has which functionality In this post we are aiming to compare and place CodeCatalyst in relation to other new or already existing AWS Services We are also going to look at missing functionalities that are currently available in other services but not in CodeCatalyst Please be aware that these are all our personal opinions and based on our own understanding some of it being assumptions This post was Co Authored with AWS Community Hero Brian Tarbox Thanks for your support AWS Services that we are going to compare CodeCatalyst with AmplifyApplication ComposerApp RunnerBeanstalkCodePipeline CodeCommit CodeBuild CodeStar CodeArtifactProton AmplifyAmplify was released at re Invent and has since then been improved gradually Amplify is a complete solution that lets frontend web and mobile developers easily build ship and host full stack applications on AWS with the flexibility to leverage the breadth of AWS services as use cases evolve With that AWS positions Amplify as a service that is able to reduce the heavy lifting on web or mobile developers that want to get started on AWS AWS has extended Amplify into being a service that offers nearly all building blocks required as part of your SDLC process It does not offer source code repositories but CI CD capabilities You are able to configure the CI CD pipeline and also provide your own build images With the release of Amplify Studio in AWS extended the capabilities to include a “No Code Low Code capability that allows rapid prototyping for web and mobile applications The target audience for Amplify are Front End and Mobile developers with no to minimal experience on AWS Application ComposerThis is a new AWS service announced at re Invent mainly focused on “rapid prototyping helping you to quickly “paint serverless applications build our your architecture out with visualizations Application Composer will create the required “starting code Cloudformation but also Lambda code in the background As output you get a project in code that you can then commit to a Git repository or deploy out to AWS Application composer enables Serverless developers to quickly prototype serverless applications and convert them into code that can then be used as a starting point for your project Application composer does not provide Source Code management or CI CD capabilities The service which reached GA on March th of points at developers starting new serverless projects that quickly want to get both an architecture diagram as well as a starting point for further developments App RunnerThis is a AWS service announced in and it can be used to build deploy and run web applications based on containerized workloads It allows you to stay focused on your application with the service taking responsibility to provision and host your application It also takes care of creating a container from your source code You can connect App Runner either to your source code management system or to a container registry BeanstalkThis is one of the “ancient AWS services it was announced in and has since then been around In the community I have more than once heard that “Beanstalk is dead and not being actively developed anymore but still it works and can be used to provision your web applications At the same time you will still be able to access the infrastructure that is required to host your service The “message is similar to App Runner it helps developers to focus on writing business code and ignore the deployment strategy Beanstalk supports Java NET PHP Node js Python Ruby Go and Docker web applications In order to use Beanstalk you will need to upload a source bundle it is not possible to connect beanstalk automatically to a Git repository but you can update the source bundle automatically using APIs CodePipeline CodeCommit CodeBuild CodeStar CodeArtifactWe treat these services in one group as they belong together from a strategic point of view They have been around for a few years and the teams that built these are now involved in CodeCatalyst CodeCatalyst partly uses them “under the hood CodeCommit is a managed git hosting CodeBuild is a managed “build system CodeStar is a “project management tool CodePipeline allows combining multiple CodeBuild steps to form a pipeline CDK Pipelines integrate with CodePipeline today With CodeArtifact users are able to store artifacts and software packages All of these services are tied to a specific AWS Account and live within the AWS Console This has forced organizations and AWS customers to create “toolchain accounts that centrally host these services These tools might be considered as building blocks rather than a full solution CodeCatalystAs we are comparing the other services with CodeCatalyst we also need to define what CodeCatalyst is a new AWS service announced at re Invent that will cover the full lifecycle of product development on AWS starting from the source up to the deployment part It is an “All in one solution to help you build software on AWS efficiently You can manage your planning and issue tracking in it as well as your source code and your CI CD workflows I have a few introduction videos recorded available on YouTube CodeCatalyst lives “off the AWS Console and this means that you do not need to be logged in to use it and it can access multiple AWS accounts by an integrated authorization process ProtonThis is a AWS service announced in and AWS describes Proton as a service to allow central teams to build and provide central infrastructure components that can easily be shared with users while at the same time maintaining the integrity of the deployed infrastructure With that the tool is focused on infrastructure provisioning deployment pipelines Proton allows the central “platform team to provide templates to be used by application teams with only minor changes or configurations to it Which problem s does CodeCatalyst address CodeCatalyst addresses the need of developers or of development teams that need to cover all parts of the product life cycle or parts of it with a tool natively built on AWS It can be used for issue management and planning as well as source code management It has natively built CI CD capabilities with workflows for Continuous Integration and Deployment CodeCatalyst offers an opinionated solution for addressing software development best practices on AWS It also allows online editing of source code with the Dev Environments and supports the management with reports on resources and workflows managed as part of CodeCatalyst With Blue Prints it allows developers to quickly start a new project and reduces the time to get a new project started It can be seen as an opinionated approach to development So how does CodeCatalyst relate to the other services Out of the six services we looked at a few can at first glance not compete or be compared with CodeCatalyst as they target a different audience or address different problems as CodeCatalyst Proton does not help with building or deploying code it is targeted towards composing an application from various pieces As such it might be part of a solution but not the whole solutionApplication Composer while this service can be used to do a rapid prototyping for serverless architectures it does not allow source code management or deployment of the built architecture I hope that we will see Application Composer as a new option for starting off a new project in CodeCatalyst going forwardBeanstalk is not a “developer focused tool as it comes with pre build environments and CI CD pipelines and expects you to manage the source code externallyBased on this the services we want to look at in more details are AmplifyApp RunnerCodePipeline CodeCommit CodeBuild CodeStar CodeArtifactCodeCatalyst vs AmplifyWhile Amplify allows to build CI CD pipelines and manage deployments for both Front End and Back End components of an application the pipelines and deployments are limited to the services supported by Amplify and the capabilities of the automatically generated CI CD pipeline There is not much flexibility to adjust the pipelines In addition to that Amplify does not allow you to store your source code or to manage your software project It has no build in issue management or tracking system With Amplify Studio and the corresponding tutorials you get the possibility to quickly get started on specific use cases This is not as flexible as the CodeCatalyst Blue Prints but gets you started pretty quickly Amplify Studio is awesome as a “low code getting you started tool it allows you to quickly build full stack applications through a User Interface and for that use case it is definitely better than CodeCatalyst At the Berlin Summit in I attended a Live Demo of Rene Brandle and was amazed by the functionalities Amplify Studio lives “outside the AWS Console in the same way as CodeCatalyst and it also requires an AWS account to be connected for deployments Each Amplify project can be connected to one AWS account This is more flexible in CodeCatalyst Still Amplify misses a lot of things that are required for an end to end “DevOps tool to manage all processes and requirements of an agile software development project CodeCatalyst vs CodePipeline CodeCommit CodeBuild CodeStar CodeArtifact Comparing CodeCatalyst to the Code services CodePipeline CodeCommit CodeBuild CodeStar CodeArtifact feels a bit like comparing a Tesla Model with Karl Benz Patent Motorwagen The Code services feel complex to use although they provide similar functionality than CodeCatalyst if you combine them together They are “building blocks that you as a developer can use to build “your own version of an integrated Developer Toolchain In addition to that they live in a specific AWS account as mentioned above which makes the handling of access complicated and requires you to have an IAM user that is allowed to access them The user interface and possible integrations are minimal and feel “developer unfriendly CodeCommit has the CodeGuru Reviewer integration which is currently not available in CodeCatalyst CodeBuild and with that CodePipeline is very slow in bringing up new fresh “build instances so starting a new pipeline execution can take minutes which is bad for developer productivity This is something that CodeCatalyst is addressing with the “lambda execution environment Summary takeaways and our wishesAs per the messaging blog posts and announcements from AWS around CodeCatalyst we believe that the service today aims to offer an opinionated tool for development teams that want to practice “You build it you run it in line with the DevOps mentality It also means that AWS shows the courage to not only give builders a tool at hand but also “influences what they build with Blue Prints that include best practices The vision for CodeCatalyst however could be even more than that a tool powered by KI capabilities that empowers builders to efficiently develop and build high quality software by reducing the manual work and efforts through automation However CodeCatalyst is not yet there and it s going to take some time and effort from the team to reach this Wishes for Developer Tooling in GeneralThis post has shown that AWS offers a lot of different possibilities to handle software projects on AWS We made clear that all of the available tools serve a different purpose and target a different audience While Amplify focusses on Web or Mobile developer and Application Composer targets Serverless developers Code Catalyst takes a more generalist approach Overall the “Developer Tools landscape on AWS needs More and better guidance on WHEN to use WHICH serviceBetter “HOW TOS instead of hard to read documentation or specificationWishes for CodeCatalystCompiling a wish list for CodeCatalyst can be a big effort as there are still a lot of features that we would like The best multi-device wireless chargers for 2023 |
https://www.engadget.com/best-multi-device-wireless-chargers-130020900.html?src=rss
|
The best multi device wireless chargers for There s a good chance you have enough devices with wireless charging support that a single device pad or stand just won t cut it However buying a multiple item charger can be a headache You not only have to contend with varying levels of support but different designs as well ーthe last thing you want is something that won t fit on your nightstand While this space can be confusing there are plenty of options out there that are worth your money We ll walk you through what you need to know while shopping for a multi device wireless charger and recommend a few models that belong on your short list Future proofingIt won t be shocking to hear that your phone choice influences your choice in chargers Only iPhone owners will need to consider Apple Watch compatibility Likewise you ll need an Android phone if you expect to power a Galaxy Watch Buy an iPhone or newer and you can attach your phone magnetically using MagSafe while the latest Android phones often have some form of fast wireless charging However it s not simply a question of getting the fastest charger You should consider what you might buy in the future Don t buy a two device charger if you have an iPhone and AirPods but have been eyeing an Apple Watch And if you think you might switch to Android or vice versa you ll want to get something more generic that doesn t lock you into any one ecosystem Some chargers include cradles trays and other features that are heavily optimized for particular products and might not even account for year to year changes Some vertical stands are too tall for small phones like the iPhone mini for instance While you can never completely guarantee that next year s phone or watch will work it s worth buying something more likely to last Having said all this don t be afraid to get a charger with vendor specific features if you re fiercely loyal to one brand Apple isn t expected to ditch MagSafe any time soon and Samsung will likely keep making Galaxy Watches for a while to come Where and how will you use it Sebastian Bednarek on UnsplashYou re probably buying a multi device charger with one location in mind It might sit on your nightstand or on your desk Not everyone buys a charger just for themselves though you might want to use one as a shared station for you and a partner If the charger will sit on your nightstand you ll likely want a compact stable unit that won t swallow all your free space or tumble to the floor You may also prefer a lay flat phone pad so your screen is less likely to keep you awake The Apple Watch and some other smartwatches can double as tiny alarm clocks so you might want a vertical charging option for any wristwear At a desk however you may want a vertical phone stand so you can check notifications Will the charger sit on a low table Horizontal pads may make it easier to grab your devices in a hurry Travel chargers should fold up or otherwise protect the pads while they re in your bag And yes aesthetics count You may want something pretty if it s likely to sit in a posh room where guests will see it If it s a shared charging station you ll want something with multiple generic surfaces and you ll probably have to forgo charging more than one watch at a time In those cases consider the handful of in chargers on the market or models with USB ports PerformanceIt s no secret that wireless charging is typically slower than wired and powering multiple devices adds a new wrinkle As these chargers often have to support a wide range of hardware you ll have to forget about the fastest device specific options from brands like Google OnePlus and Samsung That s not to say these will be slow but there just isn t much separating them on the speed front As a general rule the quickest multi device chargers tend to top out at W for phones And you ll need a MagSafe charger if you want to get that full W on an iPhone It s rare that you ll find a truly slow example mind you Even some of the most affordable options we ve seen will recharge your phone at a reasonable W or W and the W for other devices is more than enough If you re only docking overnight or while you work speed won t make a huge difference Just be sure that whatever you buy is powerful enough for a phone in a case It s also worth noting that fast charging for other devices is rare although you ll occasionally find speedier options for the Apple Watch Series Quality box contents and small detailsMelvin Thambi on UnsplashThe difference between a good charger and a great one often boils down to little details You won t always need to pay extra to get those but a larger outlay may be worthwhile to avoid frustrations for years to come A textured surface like rubberized plastic or fabric will reduce the chances your expensive gadgets will slide off their charging points The base should have enough grip and weight that the charger won t easily shift out of place Any floating or vertical stands should be sturdy ーsteer clear if there s any wobble You ll also want to make a note of what s included in the box Some chargers don t ship with power adapters and we ve seen numerous models whose Apple Watch “stands are merely holders for your existing charging puck Then there s helpful touches like status lights for confirming correct placement although you ll want to make sure they dim or shut off after a certain amount of time And while it s still true that cradles and trays can limit compatibility you do want your devices to stay where you put them Shelves and lips can prevent your phone or watch from sliding Oh and be wary of floating smartwatch mounts as heavier timepieces might sag Best premium in charger Belkin BoostCharge Pro in Wireless Charging Pad with MagSafeIt doesn t get much better than Belkin s most advanced model if you re an Apple devotee The BoostCharge Pro in pad offers W MagSafe charging for your iPhone fast charging for the Apple Watch Series and a space for AirPods or other earbuds with Qi compatible cases The base is weighty covered in rubberized plastic and includes a discreet status light for your earbuds More importantly it supports more devices than you might think Although the Pro pad uses MagSafe the horizontal layout lets you charge virtually any phone at reduced speeds We also have to give Belkin kudos for one of the most convenient Apple Watch chargers we ve seen It not only works horizontally and vertically but includes a knob to adjust for different sizes and third party cases This is quite large compared to some in chargers so it s not the greatest choice for a nightstand Consider the smaller footprint of its counterpart the BoostCharge Pro in Wireless Charger with MagSafe W if you have an iPhone or newer You also won t find USB ports and the indented earbud pad rules out a second phone Still it s easily worth the asking price Runner up in Logitech Powered in DockThere are many quality high end chargers to choose from but Logitech s Powered in Dock offers a few features that help it rise above It consumes relatively little space and the rubberized horizontal and vertical chargers deliver up to W while gripping your devices tightly so both you and your partner can top off It has a few limitations though The vertical stand isn t well suited to the iPhone mini and other small phones And while the floating stand works with most Apple Watches heavier ones tend to sag such as this author s steel Series with a Leather Link strap and might not charge properly If those aren t issues though your will be well spent Best budget in charger Anker Wireless ChargerYou can find plenty of more affordable in chargers Few however offer quite as much for the money as the Anker Wireless Charger in Stand It offers an adjustable angle W vertical stand and lets you charge an Apple Watch either horizontally or vertically There s also a W USB C power adapter in the box so you won t have to buy an aftermarket brick or rely on proprietary cabling to get started The limitations mostly stem from the cost cutting measures You probably won t have room for a second phone And like some chargers we ve seen the Apple Watch mount is a bring your own cable affair that only supports older USB A connections The included cable with your Series or SE won t work here At though this is a good bargain Another good option Otterbox in Charging Station for MagSafeIf you re willing to spend a bit more and live in Apple s universe the Otterbox in Charging Station for MagSafe is worth your attention The extremely small footprint is ideal for nightstands You can tuck your phone earbuds and Apple Watch into an area normally reserved for a single device The company supplies a surprisingly powerful W USB C power adapter in the box that serves as a fast wired option in a pinch The caveats are clear The floating MagSafe stand rules out Android phones and older iPhones You ll need to bring your own Apple Watch cable and the USB A port won t work with the USB C cables bundled with newer watches The horizontal only watch mount also rules out clock functionality The overall balance of space and utility is still difficult to top for Best in charger Mophie Dual Wireless Charging PadThe in field is highly competitive and makes it difficult to choose an absolute winner However Mophie s Dual Wireless Charging Pad hits many of the right marks It can charge two devices at up to W each making it a great pick for a two phone household The fabric surface with rubberized trim should keep your gadgets steady and the status lights will confirm accurate placement There s even a USB A port to plug in your watch charger or any other wired hardware The complaints are few You won t charge at W and we d rather have USB C than USB A It s nonetheless a safe choice at and worth buying over less expensive options Runner up in Samsung Super Fast Wireless Charger DuoMulti device chargers from phone manufacturers tend to be either compromised or highly proprietary but Samsung s Super Fast Wireless Charger Duo sometimes known as the W Duo Fast Wireless Charger bucks that trend It s compact and delivers high speed charging for one phone and an accessory whether it s a Galaxy Watch or another manufacturer s earbuds The status lights will even dim at night and change color to indicate when your batteries are full This won t help for two phone households and Samsung only guarantees W charging for some of its own phones the Galaxy Note Galaxy S and later You ll also want to be mindful of which version you buy as there are variants with and without a power adapter in the box Neither is cheap at respective prices of and This remains an elegant charger for nightstands and travel though and the pads are sufficiently device agnostic Best charger for two people Mophie in Wireless Charging MatThere are few wireless chargers built with more than one person in mind but Mophie s in Wireless Charging Mat is the most well rounded of the bunch The pad can handle up to four devices wirelessly at W including two phones and two accessories There s also a spare USB A port for charging earlier Apple Watch models using the included mount and your own cable or wired items A fabric surface subtle device trays and indicator lights will also take the mysteries out of charging This is a giant charger compared to most and you might find it limiting if your home has more than one Apple Watch or accessories that won t fit the smaller charging pads Even so Mophie is offering considerable value for The in does more than some in chargers at that price and it doesn t suffer the compatibility issues of rivals like Nomad s Base Station Pro This article originally appeared on Engadget at |
