A developer's guide to estimation |
https://dev.to/jlewis92/a-developers-guide-to-estimation-3143
|
A developer x s guide to estimation BackgroundI should probably start by saying I really dislike estimating Most of the time it s a bit like licking your finger and sticking it into the air and the everywhere else it s even worse Between having to usually quantify a large number of unknowns that can slow you down you have to try and plan in whether the coworker helping you out isn t going to rightly go on sick leave just before that major dependency comes in When you finally do give an estimate to the people you are giving the estimate to it s not an estimate it s a guarantee and when it doesn t happen for a multitude of reasons you get a pretty uncomfortable meeting where you have to try and explain why you didn t do what you said you would This feeling is so entrenched into software development that there s a pretty common joke about it person Hey we ve got this really cool feature we need adding All you need to do is add a button to the formdeveloper weeks person but it s just adding a button developer ah sure it ll take weeks However none of this really matters because the business needs this information to try and forecast future work and if this doesn t happen the company can go out of business So as much as I dislike doing estimates it s still a key skill for any developer to have How to estimateSo we ve established that we all need to know how to estimate but there s a slight problem in that how does a developer actually estimate I m sure most of us with a little experience have just thrown a number out and been reasonably accurate in that prediction without really thinking about it This is of course utterly unhelpful when you re trying to learn how to estimate and you might read articles such as this one from Time Camp which go through a fair amount of the individual techniques you can use to estimate However in my opinion the real answer to this we use a mixture of techniques that can give you an estimate in under seconds really any longer and you re probably overthinking it or the task is too large and you need to break it down Having said that here is how I personally estimate tasks Estimation can really be broken in to three parts for me Getting an actual estimate converting how long I think it will take into a realistic estimate and then finally how to convey that estimate to the business I ve broken this down below Getting the estimateWhen I think about how long something is going to take I m essentially running through questions like in the below flowchart to try and draw together an accurate estimate NOTE The above isn t everything just representative of the questions you should be asking yourself before you give an estimate For example if the code I m writing is using an interesting technology I d probably slightly reduce the time just because I d put extra work into it Converting to a real estimateThere s a few methodologies you can use to do this but I m going to discuss of the more common ones The three point estimateFrankly I don t use this that often anymore but when I was starting out and had no idea what to do doing a three point estimate helps you frame the problem in an easy to digest way NOTE Three point estimation is the endpoint of estimation i e once you ve gone through the other steps in trying to figure out how long the task will takeWhile there are several ways to get to a three point estimation we re most interested in the quickest way of getting there so we re going to use the simplest Essentially you ask yourself these questions How long will it take if it s simpler than I expectedHow long will it take if everything goes wrongHow long is it going to take realistically based on what I currently knowYou then divide the estimates by and then dived them by For example I get a task to add a button to form and based on what I know optimistically it will take me an hour to add realistically it will take hours and pessimistically it ll take me days This gives me the following over Now as this is close to hours I d then just round up to a full hour day as that s close enough Time plusThis is a really simple way of estimating and in my experience it s the most popular way of doing this activity I really wouldn t recommend this for a beginner as it s easy to get wrong but essentially you take how long you think it s going to take add and then round up to the nearest of hours day days days days days and week Any more and the task should probably be split apart i e × times × I then take the estimate and then round up to days This is usually far less accurate than a three point estimate but can get you there most of the time In my opinion despite simpler calculation this is actually more complicated to do as it relies on already having a full understanding of the solution before you can give an accurate estimate and as I said earlier better not to rely on if you re new to estimating Conveying the estimateConveying can really be broken down into parts What to do when you re giving an estimate and what to do while you re working on the task In the meetingWhen you re actually in the meeting and getting asked for an estimate here s some tips Take a few seconds to consider before answeringEven if you already know what you re going to be asked to do it always worth spending a few seconds considering the answer in your head as this is the last chance before the estimate is fixed in people s minds On multiple occasions has helped me to remember that one little thing I forgot to consider allowing me to make a more accurate estimate Be honestI know that occasionally you will get pressured to give shorter estimate than you really expect it to take If this is happening to you trust me it s going to be far less awkward to explain now than when you have to tell the same people pressuring you it s going to take longer than you saidBe honest with yourselfIf you re throwing out estimates that you think may be possible but have historically have taken you a lot longer as well as constantly having to explain to the project manager why it s taking longer it s probably a good idea to take a look at you re estimation process Don t panicIf you re new to the process of giving estimates and the other people around you know that if you get it wrong it s not such a big deal provided you re getting closer every time We ve all been where you are and it s not an easy thing to do when you re just getting startedExplain you re reasoningWhat I mean by this is is that just give a short sentence showing you understand the task and set expectations around difficulties you may have For example if I know that I ve got dependencies on another team I d probably say something like I can get this done by end of day tomorrow provided I get dependency X in the next couple of hours After the estimateOnce you ve given your estimate there are some things you can do to help try and get the task done on time and also mitigate issues if you do get it wrong TimeboxingThere are a lot of guides on how to this such as this one by clockify but in a nutshell it s the practice of allocating a set time in your day where you try and complete the task CommunicateIf you ve said a task is going to take a week and every day you ve said everything s going well up until the final day when you suddenly say that you re going to need another week you are pretty much asking for angry questions to be asked It s always better to make sure the project manager understands how you re doing and in my mind is a major reason for the daily standup If you re team isn t doing a daily standup for some reason then you probably have access to an instant messaging tool and oyu can use that instead Don t worry if you get it wrongWe ve all been in this position at some point the best thing to do is to not get too worried over it and let somebody know that you might need some help and why you re having issues What will get you in trouble is not the underestimation it s when you try to hide it |

CSS Specificity Explained |

|
CSS Specificity ExplainedIf you ve ever run into weird unexplainable styling issues there s a high chance it was something regarding specificity Specifi what ty Specificity Let s dive into it Note For the entirety of this tutorial we will use CSS If you use something else I m assuming you can translate this article into your preferred language of styling yourself If not let me know by asking your question in the comment or emailing me if you are reading this on my own website What is specificity Let s be specific about it Jokes aside it can be quite difficult to understand at first Specificity is a calculation being made to determine which CSS rules should be applied This doesn t make it a lot clearer so let s look at the selectors we use in CSS to define our styles ID CLASS and TYPE Notice the order of these as it is important to understand specificity First let s refresh and look at examples of each of these selectors IDThis one is relatively simple It s used to style something that shouldn t be reused throughout the entire application It s extremely specific An example of this would be gallery The HTML would be lt div id gallery gt lt div gt CLASSThe first example of this type of selector would be the obvious class selector blogpost You would use a class selector to define something a little less specific something that might be used in multiple places or at multiple times In HTML this would be defined as lt div class blogpost gt lt div gt Another example of what would fall under the class column of specificity are attribute selectors These are selectors that target based on the attributes of an element For example type checkbox Another example are pseudo class selectors like hover TYPEType selectors are selectors where you directly refer to the type of HTML element Think of the paragraph h or even table elements Okay let s talk specificity nowWe just looked at examples of selectors we can use while styling The specific selector we use is important as it determines what the specificity is Specificity is basically a little list with counters Each type of selector ID CLASS or TYPE has its own column in the list If we would write it out we could say it like this ID CLASS TYPE The CSS styling with the highest numbers starting from the left will get applied This is all quite dry and might be hard to understand so let s look at some examples Examples to start withLet s say we define the following CSS selectors gallery styling This would have a specificity of Why Well gallery is an ID selector so that value will be increased to Let s look at another example blogpost heading styling What do you think I see two classes classes are in the middle column If you thought this would have a specificity of you would be correct Let s look at one more relatively simple example p styling Just a simple type selector This applies to all paragraphs so it s not that specific What would the calculation for this be If you thought you re correct Okay let s look at one more simple example before we dive head first into the more difficult calculations to see which styling would be applied p blue styling What do you think the specificity is here I think you got this by now because it s Intermediate examplesWe covered the basics so now let s look at some more realistic examples of how we would have written our rule sets and see what styling would be applied in the end This can get quite difficult the more selectors you have but you got this header h title color red header title color blue So which one would get applied Try it yourself and see if you re right Here s a codepen to see the result SPOILER ALERT The specificity is vs So the header h title styling would be applied This is pretty fun let s look at one more example before wrapping it up fieldset div label max color red max color blue So would the text be red or blue I m not going to give you the answer this time I will give you the link to a codepen though But before clicking on it and seeing the result try to figure it out yourself This is the codepen for the example above ConclusionSpecificity is quite difficult once you have loads of selectors in your production application We didn t cover all the different types of examples but if you follow the explanation given you should get very far There are certain tools out there that calculate the specificity for you but I recommend getting the hang of this yourself Practice it a bit more if you need to It s definitely a decent skill to have in your toolbelt Did you enjoy this article and want to read more from me Follow me on dev to or subscribe to my newsletter at my website |

The Problem With React |
https://dev.to/steveblue/the-problem-with-react-46mg
|
The Problem With ReactIn this post I ll tell the other side of the story The parts the React Documentary failed to mention The recent React documentary was not a good look but you wouldn t know it looking at the comments on Youtube Some may refrain from posting anything critical fearing retribution by members of the community It s a real thing Haters gonna hate An ethical way to make a documentary is to be objective but the narrator is clearly crafting a narrative that is biased toward React Why do we even need a narrator Are we caught in a cult of personality The documentary is a warped take on reality There is no counterpoint a complete lack of diverse perspectives so we don t get the complete story Who am I to tell you anything about React I m not a React maintainer I m a web developer that used React in an enterprise org someone who taught functional programming with React to others implemented a large React UI library and coded a React app I ve been developing for the web for over years At least I m not begging you to subscribe to my Youtube channel ChurnMy time with React involved engineers migrating class components to functional enzyme to react testing library fixing issues with build configurations tracking a multitude of dependencies patching security exploits Time that could have been spent coding features and enhancements wasted The job of an engineer at a corporation isn t to merely maintain the codebase our job is to deliver value for the business to delivering features and bug fixes for customers After many months of work React finally upgraded their documentation If you haven t already migrated your class components to functional you soon will because in the React docs class components are now deprecated and will be removed in a later version This is just one example of the churn Several developers first learned how to code React using the help of Create React App but probably found they had to roll their own build with Rollup Webpack or Vite while working at a corporation There is no mention of Create React App in the new React documentation React doesn t even recommend client side development in the new docs favoring several server side implementations including Next js Gatsby Expo and React Server Components The problem with going all in server side is that some front end engineers at corporations have no control over the server I was one of these engineers No argument could pull Java away from the stack in favor of Node js an often more performant tool that could have even saved the corporation operational costs React has effectively abandoned engineers like me We have no guidance for bootstrapping a React app solely for the client This is what happened to me after trying to convince others at a large enterprise organization to move some logic to the server This problem of valuing DX over UX isn t unique to React other libraries and frameworks suffer from the same thing What s possibly unique to React is revealed by that famous quote from Mark Zuckerberg Move fast and break things I m sorry but at this won t fly at other corporations It s not like React even gets the DX right DX is a hot mess especially when multiple parts of the ecosystem are ever changing So What Just became React is popular now doesn t mean it always will be I think we already hit peak React but haven t seen any conclusive analytical evidence to validate that The job market is heavily React but it won t always be this way A decade ago before React even gained popularity KnockoutJS jobs were a rare opportunity in a sea of jQuery It s happened before and it s happening again There is a great sea change happening in web development Several libraries are springing up to support UI component development with Web Components Frameworks like Qwik are changing the game by removing hydration and moving a majority of work to the server Change is happening now React engineers rode a wild wave that is about to come crashing down By the way I realize jQuery is still around I just dipped into a codebase that uses jQuery React will most likely be around in a decade I m not saying React is going away entirely I m saying React in ten years will be regarded like jQuery is today How To ChangeIf you re heavily embedded in the React ecosystem you re doing yourself a disservice professionally It s time to replace short term thinking with long term if you hope to make it for a long time in this profession Make sure you learn the fundamentals that apply to every library and framework That means HTML CSS and JavaScript Take some time every year to learn new standards landing in the browsers Learn TypeScript because it s here to stay whether as an extension of the language or at some point types baked into the specification Learn how servers work http WebSocket and so forth These fundamentals help you fix issues contribute to open source spur innovation It s time to start thinking OK how would I do that without React |

discount at Woot Wellbots is also taking off of a pair of earbuds dropping Google s Pixel Buds Pro down to when you use the Engadget coupon And speaking of vouchers the iPad Air is off at Amazon when the best tech deals from this week that you can still get today nbsp Apple Watch SEYou can snag Apple s most affordable smartwatch the Apple Watch SE for its lowest price yet It s on sale for after a percent discount which matches the steepest discount we ve seen since its debut We gave it a review score of calling it the best smartwatch can buy There s no always on display and it doesn t have blood oxygen sensors skin temperature readings or ECG monitoring like the Series The screen isn t quite as robust either But for you ll get a fully featured smartwatch with excellent app integration and plenty of health tracking features Beats Fit ProBeats Fit Pro are premium earbuds that usually come at a premium price but right now Woot has them for percent off That brings them to which is the lowest we ve ever seen them go for We gave them an in our review praising the excellent active noise cancellation powerful sound and punchy bass They also happen to fit a wide range of ear shapes thanks to the fit wing that s comfortable while keeping the buds securely in place nbsp The Beats audio brand is owned by Apple so they take on some of the more helpful iOS compatibility features like good Siri integration and support for spatial audio Despite that they ll also pair up with Android devices Though if you re an Android person you might check out the deal on Pixel Buds Pro below nbsp nbsp Google Pixel Buds ProIf you use an Android phone the Pixel Buds Pro are what we recommend Right now a discount code at Wellbots will knock off the list price bringing them down to just Enter ENGTGOOGLE at checkout to get the deal In our review of the Pixel Buds Pro we appreciated the responsive touch controls excellent bass and solid noise cancellation They ve got an excellent hour battery life if you re not using active noise cancellation Turn the feature off ーand drop the buds in the charging case ーand you ll get a full hours on a charge One of our complaints was a lack of quality in handling phone calls but if you re more of a texter anyway perhaps that won t matter as much Our other concern was the price But with off that s less of an issue The same code will also give you off on the Google Pixel Watch You can read our review of Google s latest wearable here Apple Watch Series The Apple Watch with GPS connectivity in the mm size usually goes for but Amazon is selling it for right now which matches the lowest price we ve seen it drop to a few times before The sale only covers the Product Red and Midnight colorways and doesn t extend to the larger mm case size Still it s a nice savings on a wearable we think is one of best smartwatches on the market right now It s got tons of health integrations including blood oxygen sensors ECG abilities temperature monitoring crash detection and of course all of Apple s fitness tracking and coaching It s only designed to work for iPhone users so if you re an Android person you might want to check out our other space gray variants are only getting a standard seven or nine percent discount depending on the size and aren t currently offering the coupon nbsp nbsp We gave the tablet a top notch score of in our review calling it a future proof iPad The M chip makes it speedy enough for content creation and gaming while easily handling more intensive workflows The battery life is great and the front camera is far improved over the previous model ーthough it s still on the top of the portrait edge which can make you seem off centered in video calls if you have it in landscape orientation It also doesn t use that great camera to take advantage of Face ID you ll still need to use a fingerprint on the button or tap in your unlock code nbsp Apple AirPods Pro nd gen We keep a close eye on the price for Apple s AirPods Pro They re undoubtedly great earbuds I m wearing some now as I type this but they re not cheap I m indefinitely borrowing my set from my mother They ve once again dropped back to their lowest price making them instead of We saw the same sale back in February so if you missed that now s your chance nbsp They re our current favorite option for iPhone users according to our guide to wireless earbuds They ve got Apple s new H chip to deliver better noise cancellation and an impressive transparency mode The battery life isn t as long as some competitors ーyou ll only get about six hours on a charge though the case delivers an extra three charges before you need to plug in again Check out our full review here nbsp JBL Flip A few of our favorite Bluetooth speakers from JBL are up to percent off at Amazon right now That includes the Flip which off bringing the waterproof speaker down to We named the Flip one of our favorite portable wireless speakers in our guide It s got great sound quality for its relatively small size just over a pound and only seven inches long and it s plenty durable nbsp The biggest discount goes to the JBL GO with a percent discount making it just It s got five hours of battery life a waterproof rating and is just three inches tall That one didn t make it into our top picks but a similarly diminutive speaker that did the Tribit StormBox Micro is also on sale with a percent discount nbsp nbsp The Charge which we also recommend in our Bluetooth speaker guide is on sale for percent off That s not an all time low but takes off the usual list price JBL s Charge is a little cheaper to begin with and has roughly the same specs including a two pound size and hour battery life It s on sale for percent off bringing it down to And if you d rather buy direct from JBL many of the same deals can be found on their site as well nbsp Echo Show Falling between a home hub and a smart TV Amazon s Echo Show can control your smart home and play Rivian issues its second airbag recall in less than a monthRivian is issuing a recall for airbag related issues for the second time in the last few weeks The EV automaker is notifying affected owners of the RS SUV about potentially faulty side curtain airbags The recall says one or more of the models side curtain airbags left or right side may not have been properly fastened A report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA says the affected models were manufactured at the company s Normal IL plant between October th and January st Rivian began contacting customers on March nd to schedule an inspection and secure them properly In addition the company says it will reimburse any owners who already paid for the repair elsewhere Although the latest recall only affects vehicles it s the second time the automaker has issued an airbag related recall in less than a month A March st one was much broader affecting over RT pickups and RS SUVs over an airbag deployment issue In that case a supplier s faulty seatbelt sensors which prevented the front passenger airbags from deploying were the culprit However the vast majority in that group won t likely have the flaw as Rivian estimated only one percent of the recalled vehicles were affected Although the recalls won t likely hurt Rivian s finances significantly it still isn t a great look for the young automaker ーespecially when it recently laid off six percent of its workforce for the second time in less than a year This article originally appeared on Engadget at |
