review A miraculous display in a laptop you can probably skipThe Razer Blade is one of the most unique laptops we ve ever seen I just wish I could recommend it as easily as the Blade It can handle K gaming just as well as high speed p gameplay thanks to a dual mode screen And it s one of the fastest notebooks around featuring Intel s latest CPUs and NVIDIA s newest GPUs And notably it can be configured with an RTX But all of that comes at a cost It s noticeably heavier than the Blade and you ll have to pay at least to own one with the dual mode display It s like Razer put another Razer tax on top of its already high prices For some though the cost will be worth it The Blade s MiniLED display can natively handle K Hz meaning it can show up to fps gameplay and p Hz You could always configure a K panel to scale down to p or lower resolutions but that usually leads to a muddy mess and K screens are typically limited to Hz at best What s special about the Blade is that it delivers those resolutions as sharply as standalone monitors According to Razer the Blade s dual mode MiniLED technology was developed together with the display maker AUO The screen is natively a K Hz panel that can sync pixels together to accurately scale down to p something that looks far better than typical downscaling Razer says there s no mobile GPU or data pipeline that can effectively deliver K at Hz so that refresh rate is only possible in p It s still rare to find K Hz on desktop monitors and even a would have trouble hitting fps at that resolution Previously you d have to choose between a K screen with a much lower refresh rate or a faster p or p display The Blade lets you have your gaming cake and eat it too The only downside is that switching between those two modes requires a complete reboot Given how miraculous technology seems though I don t think that s a huge problem If you care more about resolution stick with the K Hz mode until you need to dive into some fast paced competitive gaming Maybe instead of thinking of the Blade as a slight upgrade from the inch model it s better to think of it as a shrunken down Blade That s another massive and expensive computer but potential buyers are likely aware of its downsides More importantly the Blade was the fastest Razer laptop for years ーnow that title belongs to the Blade and the new Blade Photo by Devindra Hardawar EngadgetBoth of these laptops feature Intel s th gen mobile CPUs as well as NVIDIA s more powerful RTX and GPUs This is the first time we ve seen NVIDIA s series hardware on any notebook so that alone is sure to be a hook for power hungry gamers Strangely though Razer s dual mode display is only available on the Blade ーthe tech likely isn t there yet to make it happen on the bigger computer In practice the Blade excelled at both K and p gaming Cyberpunk and Halo Infinite looked absolutely crisp in K with their graphics and ray tracing settings maxed out Both games also looked far brighter than I ve ever seen on a laptop thanks to the MiniLED panel That s particularly useful for bright HDR highlights something most notebooks and monitors handle poorly NonePCMark DMark TimeSpy Extreme Geekbench Cinebench RRazer Blade Intel i HX NVIDIA RTX Razer Blade Intel i HX NVIDIA RTX Razer Blade Intel i H NVIDIA RTX Ti ASUS Zephyrus G AMD Ryzen HS Radeon RX S Given the sheer power of the RTX in our review unit the Blade was also able to play games in K well beyond fps Depending on your graphics settings you may even be able to reach fps to fully max out its screen Halo Infinite hit a very playable fps with ultra graphics settings while Cyberpunk hit fps with Ultra ray tracing settings thanks to DLSS Not surprisingly the Blade had no issue getting above fps in Halo Infinite and Overwatch when I flipped over to p mode Personally I ve never really seen the point of gaming screens beyond Hz ーI just can t really perceive much of a difference by bumping up to or Hz But after switching between the Blade s various modes I noticed that I played better as I approached fps ーI hit headshots more regularly and I was faster to react whenever enemies popped up Maybe it was just luck or me feeling more comfortable over time ーor maybe those extra frames actually helped As much as I enjoyed the Blade s gorgeous display and incredible performance I didn t love lugging it around my house or hauling it in a bookbag It weighs pounds a full pound heavier than the Blade Now that might not seem like much but it makes a huge difference for portability Living with the Blade was no different than most other inch notebooks but the Blade feels noticeably bulkier But again maybe I should be judging it against the Blade instead which weighed a little over pounds When compared to that the Blade seems like a remarkable engineering feat That s not the way most people think of inch notebooks though The MacBook Pro replaced the inch model and many other laptop makers are following suit with their larger notebooks On the non gaming front the Blade also excelled at everything I threw at it Scrolling through websites and documents was a dream thanks to that high refresh rate screen And while it doesn t include a mechanical keyboard like Alienware and other competitors the Blade s typing experience was solid The trackpad is also far larger than the Blade s but it s just as smooth and responsive And you can actually expect to do a decent amount of work before recharging In PCMark s battery benchmark it lasted hours and minutes two hours more than the Blade It also has every port you d want three USB Type A connections two on the left side one on the right HDMI two USB C ports one of which supports Thunderbolt and a microSD card slot Photo by Devindra Hardawar EngadgetAs I spent time with the Blade I couldn t help but ask myself Is it really worth spending more for a dual mode screen when fast p laptops are becoming increasingly affordable Personally I think that resolution sits at a sweet spot between delivering more pixels than p but also achieving faster refresh rates than any K panel For most people a p laptop like the Zephyrus G simply makes more sense especially when you can find them for or more less than the Blade Given its added heft as well as its higher starting price with an RTX I can t recommend the Blade to most buyers not when the Blade is still around and starts at with a Ti If you want the be prepared to shell out another And if you re mainly intrigued by the dual mode display on the Blade that costs with an RTX Honestly that s a ridiculously high price for a laptop with that GPU Our review unit cost a whopping with the Core i HX RTX GB of RAM and a TB SSD But just like much of Apple s hardware the Razer tax may be something we have to pay for innovation The Blade s dual mode screen is one of the most remarkable things I ve seen in a gaming laptop lately but for most shoppers the Blade will be far more practical help you with all that we ve researched the latest models for all kinds of markets whether you re a gamer business user or content creator Read our buying guide below to find out which is the best computer monitor for you and especially your budget The basicsPanel typeThe cheapest monitors are still TN twisted nematic which are strictly for gaming or office use VA vertical alignment monitors computing and even inch displays have become popular for entertainment content creation and even gaming these days Nearly every monitor used to be but it s now possible to find and other more exotic display shapes On the gaming and entertainment side we re also seeing curved and ultrawide monitors with aspect ratios like If you do decide to buy an ultrawide display however keep in mind that a inch model is the same height as a inch monitor so you might end up with a smaller display than you expected As a rule of thumb add percent to the size of a monitor to get the vertical height you d expect from a model with a aspect ratio A K monitor is nearly a must for content creators and some folks are even going for K or all the way up to K Keep in mind though that you ll need a pretty powerful computer to drive all those pixels And K resolution should be paired with a screen size of inches and up or you won t notice much difference between p At the same time I wouldn t get a model larger than inches unless it s K as you ll start to see pixelation if you re working up close to the display One new category to consider is portable monitors designed to be carried and used with laptops Those typically come in p resolutions and sizes from inches They usually have a lightweight kickstand type support that folds up to keep things compact SamsungHDRHDR is the buzzy monitor feature to have these days as it adds vibrancy to entertainment and gaming but be careful before jumping in Some monitors that claim HDR on the marketing materials don t even conform to a base standard To be sure that a display at least meets minimum HDR specs you ll want to choose one with a DisplayHDR rating with each tier representing maximum brightness in nits However the lowest DisplayHDR and tiers may disappoint you with a lack of brightness washed out blacks and mediocre color reproduction If you can afford it the best monitor to choose is a model with DisplayHDR or True Black True Black and True Black The True Black settings are designed primarily for OLED models with maximum black levels at nits Where televisions typically offer HDR and Dolby Vision or HDR most PC monitors only support the HDR standard other than a few very expensive models That doesn t matter much for content creation or gaming but HDR streaming on Netflix Amazon Prime Video and other services won t look quite as punchy In addition most models supporting HDR and up are gaming monitors rather than content creation monitors with a few exceptions nbsp Refresh rateRefresh rate is a key feature particularly on gaming monitors A bare minimum nowadays is Hz and Hz and higher refresh rates are much easier on the eyes However most K displays top out at Hz with some rare exceptions and the HDMI spec only supports K at Hz so you d need at least DisplayPort K at Hz or HDMI The latter is now available on a number of monitors particularly gaming displays However it s only supported on the latest
