Dependency Injection in a React application Huh You may know the dependency injection or DI from your backend endeavours or maybe you remember it from Angular But I think it s more than likely you didn t think about hacking the DI into a React app And that s fine because the idea is weird But very interesting Some of you might remember my post about AeroDI here where I build my own dependency injection library for fun and some advantageous usage I stubbornly use it everywhere I can in all of my hobby projects to catch weird bugs and make the library better So it got updated a bit since the original post But anyway today is the day one of those weird design choices will allow us to do put it into react app But why Good question I don t know if anyone will have a similar use case but I actually had a situation where using the same DI helped a lot Let me explain When I write my backend code I use something called domain driven development This means among other things that the code that does the business logic is separated from everything from the api binding from the database binding etc the code is on it s own standalone and talking to outer world with various interfaces implemented by api and db for example I will describe a nice folder structure for such things in a future article The code in question here was the code that runs gravitational multibody simulation The whole domain part of the code is autowired with AeroDI on the backend I realized I need the same code on the frontend with just minor corrections like different file loading mechanics So I decided to try somethingCopy the code as is into frontend app into a special lib folderSetup AeroDI to generate reflection for that lib folderInitialize the AeroDI in the app but only onceAfter that the DI should work fine and can be used just like on the backend Insane Let see how to do that precisely Zustand I choose you To make the global initialization look very professional and less like a hack I decided to use a zustand store to provide the DI So I made the following changes to the system Installed aero di package because I use yarn with yarn add aero diAdded this to package json scripts generate reflection aero di generate baseDir src lib Changed by build and dev commands to generate reflection dev yarn generate reflection amp amp vite build yarn generate reflection amp amp tsc amp amp vite build Added DI to the globalStore I removed other fields here for clarity export interface GlobalStore di AeroDI export const useGlobalStore create lt GlobalStore gt set gt const di new AeroDI classesReflection return di And then if you want to use the DI in a react component const di useGlobalStore store gt store di And for example const getStrongestGravityContributorAtPoint di getByClass GetStrongestGravityContributorAtPoint Yay Simple and works Explaination why it even works Just a very short explaination because there is not really that much to it AeroDI generates its support code into a typescript file that you then use to initialize the library This code is not something super special sitting in a special place and needing unique treatment No this code is just some code piece in you app and just like any other code in your app will be compiled down to the dist react app in my case via Vite And because the reflection metadata was part of your code itself it will become part of the dist build and no other care is needed Easy One thing to remember is live reloading won t regenerate the reflection data but this can be easily remedied by setting up a nodemon monitor the lib folder and run generate on change for example like that verbose true watch lib ignore lib reflectionData ts ext ts js json exec yarn generate reflection delay That s allThanks for reading Now that I have this in my app I used it to also implement a three js renderer skipping that horrendous three js react fiber plugin And I will describe how to do it and not go insane in the next article Until then happy coding |
