adapt to changes in a rapidly changing business environment However this means constant changes with customizations and integrations At the same time the cloud software vendor shows up with new releases and another set of changes comes into play As the implementation of cloud ERP grows customers have a need to validate their processes after each change How can you do this when manual testing approaches are time consuming and tedious Here is how we can achieve a lot with automated testing In this article we won t talk about the advantages of automated testing of cloud based ERP platforms in theory Instead of this we ll explain how we implemented automated testing in practice and demonstrate how it helped to achieve better results for our client Let s get started Retail ERP Software Structure and ChallengesThe project we are going to talk about is Comcash a cloud based ERP Enterprise Resource Planning software with a wide range of features It includes Point of Sale software and E commerce software that allows small and medium businesses to sell their products both offline at physical shops and online at e shops The main goal of the platform is to provide retailers with a new way of selling groceries organizing products and inventory performing sales managing customers managing and tracking warehouse activity and performing accounting with the help of only one powerful cloud tool The completely integrated software solution allows retailers to cover all aspects of the process quickly and efficiently Before going further let s take a detailed look at the project ecosystem that includes web desktop and mobile modules The web module consists of Admin Panel ーfor managing the whole systemE shop ーfor performing sales onlineThe desktop module includes POS ーa native Windows desktop application where sales are performedDesktop application ーfor tracking and displaying ordersThe mobile module has A mobile POS application ーused to reduce the load in the stores during the line busting hours with the help of this app customers are able to make a purchase right at the place where the mPOS employee stands in the storeMobile application ーfor managing warehouse activityMobile application ーfor tracking and displaying ordersAn intelligent display working in tandem with its parent s POS Terminal that helps customers to track the processing of their order in real time what products have been added to the list products price and quantity etc As you can see the project consists of many subsystems and components with complex logic and structure While the system continues to grow errors began to appear unexpectedly and it was necessary to fix them as soon as possible Moreover the speed of release of software products to the market is an important part of business development But a continuously growing project requires much more time and human resources for its development and testing At this point the main tech challenges included Continuously expanding project meant more and more new features added for testingExtra workload caused a lack of time for the QA team to conduct a complete regression testingAdding new project functionalities resulted in some existing features or even parts of current functionality breakingAll these problems could stop the store s operations and customer service The number of bugs in production and requests from the client to fix them could increase as well Moreover test cases required the creation of a large amount of test data and combinations and without prepared data it was impossible to test as many scenarios as possible A user without the necessary permissions could have access to reports sales or customer information in the Admin panel there was a risk of entering incorrect data into the system or deleting it altogether This might result in revenue loss reputational damage and operational disruption of the store Over time it became clear that the tech challenges greatly slowed down the testing of new features and the development of the project and might negatively impact the final product Implementing Automated Testing What We Did and What We GotTo solve the tech challenges we came to the conclusion that it would be more rational to automate the verification of all main scenarios After analyzing the basic flows of our system we identified that the most critical is the Discounts functionality from the POS side This is a large module with complex logic and mathematical calculations which could take two weeks of manual time to check Therefore we decided to automate this feature To do this we needed to explore the possibilities of writing tests for a desktop application and we found a suitable solution such as Appium and WinAppDriver with results visualization using the Allure report This allowed us to pull off most of the tasks from manual QA engineers Test data was created and values were calculated by autotests taking into account all conditions and combinationsResponses from the server were processed without the participation of manual QA engineersA large number of tasks for testing sales taxes and discounts were transferred from manual testing to automationHowever a lot of problems related to the UI and API parts needed to be solved as well A data leak from the Admin panel by requests from an unregistered userStopping the store s operations and losing customers due to the impossibility of creating a sale or a customer in the Admin panel with the proper permissionsThe accidental deletion of some components in the Admin panel led to the removal of products in the e shop and POSThe risk of fraudulent transactions with reportsThe lack of clarity on how the business and its processes are performing due to the discrepancies in financial reportsPossible income loss and penalties for providing inaccurate information to the tax authorities due to incorrect tax calculations One More Step to Get Better ResultsTo make the system more effective and safe it was necessary to adopt effective solutions that allow for fixing vulnerabilities and covering all possible permission combinations inside the system using API and main user flows for POS and UI modules As a result POS API and UI autotests were implemented in the project that helped us achieve significant resultsThe key business benefits for the client included Improvement of customer service by eliminating problems with using the Admin panel optionsIncreasing the level of protection and security of system dataQuick detection of critical bugs that might block the storeThe ability to deploy hotfixes to production frequently and quicklyThus we achieved an integrated system of solutions for each direction which allows us to solve the testing tasks on the project in a comprehensive and quick manner For example here are the results of one of the recent releases Now we run tests on a regular basis before each release and get detailed metrics which are analyzed for further actions One of the key metrics to judge the efficacy of the QA process is the bug classification metric It helps us to identify the most problematic areas of the system and increase test coverage to avoid critical bugs in production The test coverage metric discovers uncovered areas of the project to make it more robust Also test coverage can serve as a basic measure of risk the more test coverage attained the lower the chances of production defects Once we identify the benefits of autotests within the QA team we wanted the developers to be able to run tests at any time For this purpose integration with CI was arranged And the stakeholder could catch the clear and accurate big picture of the processes on the project at any time The Bottom Line Business Benefits of Automated ERP TestingBy implementing automated testing in the cloud based ERP software we managed to successfully solve a bunch of problems with a positive impact on the final product quality and the project itself Collecting all unique scenarios helped us to make it possible to automate all kinds of combinations and significantly reduce the number of bugs in production Eliminating the human factor when checking core functionality helped us to avoid inaccuracies in calculations and as a result to assure our client of receiving correct and real numbers and statistics Also we were able to reduce regression testing time Having automation testing implemented we managed to save about hours of manual time for the QA team for each release to test new functionality and perform priority business tasks An average automation testing time is about minutes and the difference in time savings is more and more noticeable with every release Optimizing processes in the QA team helped manual QA engineers to be more focused on testing critical functionality What is even more important adopting automated testing gave an opportunity to the client to make sure that the key functions of the inexpensive at a month or a year Best wireless security camera Blink camerasThere s a lot to like about the Wyze Cam V but it needs to be plugged in For a wireless alternative we like the Blink Indoor and Outdoor cameras They both run on AA batteries so you can place them anywhere you want and they ll run for around two years before you need to replace the batteries The Blink Outdoor is weather instruct it to clean a specific spot in case you need it And if you prefer to talk to your robot vacuum cleaner the Roomba works well with both Alexa and Google Assistant Best high end robot vacuum iRobot Roomba s If you don t mind spending more money on an even better robot vacuum we recommend the Roomba s It has the strongest suction power of any Roomba so it s not surprise that it cleans both carpet and hard floors well It has a mapping technology that helps it keep track of all the different rooms in your home to clean it in the most efficient way possible But arguably the best thing about the s is that after each job it automatically empties its bin into a clean base that can hold about days worth of dirt In short the s is worth the splurge if you want a robot vacuum that doesn t require a lot of attention Best smart plug Wyze PlugSmart plugs are the easiest way to add a bit of connectivity to your home without spending a ton of money Connect your regular non smart lamp and voila it s internet connected and you didn t have to spend a fortune The best one we ve tried is from Wyze thanks largely to its easy to use app We were able to fly through the installation process pairing was seamless and connecting it to WiFi was simple as well We especially love that it offers two factor authentication the rest of the smart plugs we tried did not have this You can schedule it to go on and off at different times and days The Wyze Plug works with Alexa Google Assistant though you ll have to go through the Google Home app to pair it plus the IFTTT service Runner up TP Link rig is now a pluginPlaying guitar and growing up when I did basically means I am legally required to worship Tom Morello So when I got wind that Neural DSP s latest collaboration was with Rage Against the Machine guitarist I knew I d have to put it through its paces Archetype Tom Morello turns the company s meticulous modeling ears to the sounds that defined not just Rage but Audioslave as well just like it has for Gojira John Petrucci and Rabea Massaad previously The result is a stunningly accurate recreation of Morello s tone and one of the simplest entries in the Archetype series yet nbsp Where as most of the other Archetype plugins have multiple amp sims racks of effects and even a synthesizer Morello s is a single amp and five core effects pedals with a few extras tossed in That shouldn t be that shocking though Morello has played more or less the same exact rig since the earliest days of Rage Against the Machine through to this very day on stage Neural DSP modeled his specific amp a beat up Marshall JCM watt head that he famously has his tone literally etched in The dials basically don t move You can set them to whatever you want in the plugin but why would you Photo by Terrence O Brien EngadgetHis pedal board hasn t changed much over the years either The core here comes down to five effects an EQ a phaser a delay a wah and ーof course ーa Whammy pedal or simply quot wham quot here for trademark purposes There s also a dive bomb pedal though I m fairly certain the effects its being used to create here were done on Tom s guitar with the tremolo arm or with the Whammy Which I think is evidenced by the fact that none of the Morello designed presets make use of that effect There s a bonus delay and reverb pedal plus an EQ section separate from the EQ pedal and you can mic the virtual cabinet with different virtual mics change their position and distance from the speakers or even load your own IRs impulse responses While the later is a nice bonus it will lead you away from the stated goal here ーto make you sound like Tom Morello Well there s good news and bad news on that front Bad news is you will never sound like Tom Morello Unless you are Tom Morello In which case welcome Morello s playing is as much about his unique style and carefully crafted technique as it is his gear But I will say that Neural DSP can get you like percent of the way there The raw tone from the amp sim is spot on I always struggle when I decide I feel like banging out some Rage songs because I can t get anything even remotely close to the required punishing grooves out of my Yamaha THR or Fender Blues Jr But with Archetype Tom Morello I was able to match the raw sound of his riffs nbsp Photo by Terrence O Brien EngadgetSince Morello relies heavily on digital delay and pitch shifting those effects relatively easy to recreate in a plug in Even his trademark phaser which is analog is pretty accurately captured here The one effect that doesn t quite land is the wah It s a bit harsher and nasal than what I hear on Rage records It s important to note that to really get the most out of this plugin though you ll need a MIDI expression pedal Trying to play Morello s iconic Whammy heavy solos without an expression pedal is like trying to cook without salt It might be technically possible but the results will be unpleasant This is where I ran into a small problem I do not have a MIDI expression pedal amongst my piles of gear I have an analog expression pedal and I was able to connect it to my computer through Arturia s new KeyLab Essential mk but the results were uneven nbsp Ableton sometimes failed to recognize the full sweep of the pedal and I d be unable to make the full two octave jump while playing the quot Killing in the Name quot solo And when bypassing my DAW and using Archetype Tom Morello as a standalone app it inverted the sweep of the expression pedal even when I reversed the polarity So I had to go heel down when I would normally go toe down playing the wah guitar in quot Bulls on Parade quot which was a bit tough to adjust to Photo by Terrence O Brien EngadgetI also found that some of the presets even the Morello designed ones needed a little EQing to sound their best Especially the quot Killing in the Name quot and quot Like a Stone quot ones where rolling off some of the high end was necessary to keep the highest Whammy notes from driving my dog insane Minor hiccups like that aside channeling my inner teenager ーwildly flicking my pickup selector on and off while creating cascades of high pitched digital noise was insanely fun Obviously personal taste will play a major role here But Rage Against the Machine and Morello were very important to my development as a guitarist I will never be as talented creative or famous as Tom Morello But for an afternoon I could role play as a chaotic good master of riffs At least until my five year old asked why the man on the stereo kept shouting quot
