forward and reverses proxy to send and receive webhooks to client endpoints and from third party providers They are designed to enforce security resilience and high availability on all webhook events for an organisation We wrote a more detailed description here The image above describes the flow of webhook events from the microservices to client endpoints as well as from third parties to the microservices In this article we will discuss why webhooks gateways are relevant to the microservices architecture and what common features are found in the webhooks gateway Finally we will discuss some of the caveats to bear in mind while adopting a webhooks gateway Why Do We Need Webhook Gateways The various advantages of a microservice architecture subsequently present unique challenges that Webhook Gateways are purpose built to address Centralised Infrastructure to Decentralised MicroservicesMicroservice architectures split up several functions of an application into separate services that are owned by different teams This separation is typically based on a common domain e g Payments service Notifications service etc This design pattern engenders each team to build deploy and maintain their services independently Unlike a monolith application teams are able to increase velocity and deliver features faster This approach means increased complexity for webhook management How are we able to route webhook events from third parties to the right microservice s How are we able to route webhook events from backend services to client endpoints This is where a webhooks gateway comes in They re able to provide a central infrastructure capable of ingesting and routing webhooks both internally to backend services and externally to client endpoints This central platform also reduces the learning curve for new teams to add webhooks to their services Microservice Language and Protocol AgnosticOne of the major benefits of the microservice approach is the ability for teams to utilise the best tools for the job For example one team can decide to build their API using Rails GraphQL and MongoDB while another team can decide to build their API using Golang gRPC and PostgreSQL Regardless of the technology stack chosen by each team Webhook gateways rely on a consistent payload structure to send to client endpoints and an endpoint to receive from a third party As long as the payload format and structure remain consistent developers can implement the business logic with any technology stack they prefer While leaving the gateway to cross cutting concerns like retries rate limiting and signing the payload Services can be rewritten from Python to Rust and redeployed with the Gateway To the client endpoints the payload remains the same and it can continue to rely on the payload format and structure to remain the same Routing to Microservices based on payload structureWhen webhooks are ingested into your systems from third party providers in a monolith all events are routed to the same application all the time However in a microservice architecture one or more microservice s can rely on the event from the provider to carry out separate actions Webhook Gateways can be configured to receive events and route them to one or more destinations They can match both headers and payload to determine webhook s destination Traffic Control to prevent overloading of resourcesInternet facing services are common targets for malicious attacks and exploitation They need to handle a sudden spike in requests from valid users and bad actors This requires features like request throttling and blacklist capabilities to keep systems reliable and secure Webhook Gateways are an effective barrier against Distributed Denial of Service DDoS attacksーthrottling the number of requests made to affected services so the service isn t overwhelmed and protecting it against becoming unresponsive Common Features amp BenefitsA Webhook Gateway is located at the outer edge of your microservices and acts as a proxy to manage all ingress and egress webhook traffic The Webhook Gateway handles several features SecurityWebhook Events sent to client endpoints need to be securely delivered to client endpoints Clients need to validate that the message has not been tampered with in transit and they need to know that events are not being re transmitted by malicious actors in some sensitive environments they need to authenticate the webhook provider and authorise their IP address through their network firewall When receiving events from third party providers e g Stripe Twilio consumers need to verify the webhooks before routing them to backend services for processingWebhooks Gateway is able to centralise cross cutting concerns like webhooks security and securely receive events from backend services sign the payload timestamp the payload and deliver them reliably with a static IP address Since they exist at the outer edge of your microservices they are able to prevent exposing any of your backend services directly to the internet and reduce the attack surface area for malicious actors ResilienceManaging HTTP Endpoints is one of the core responsibilities of a Webhook Gateway Standard webhooks flow is a post request to an endpoint and expect a xx status code in return indicating success However these endpoints fail from time to time for several reasons flaky networks spikes in traffic code or infrastructure changes that resulted in downtime and degraded performance in the client s application dependencies Due to the various types of issues that can prevent reliable webhooks delivery webhook Gateways add important features like timeouts to prevent waiting endlessly for responses and retries to automatically re transmit webhook events rate limiting to deliver events to client endpoints at a steady pace the client can process and circuit breaking to prevent wasting system resources on zombie endpoints i e endpoints that have failed consecutively over time Customer Facing DashboardDebugging webhooks delivery is an important aspect of the responsibilities of webhooks providers to clients Best practice enables engineers to debug webhook delivery without human interaction with the engineering team of the provider Webhook Gateways provide such a utility to generate rich customer facing webhooks dashboard where users can directly zero human intervention debug webhook delivery issues and fix failing endpoints with a few clicks Multiple Data Source OptionsWebhook Gateways need to be flexible and versatile Microservices emit events through various channels For example building on Google Cloud developers will often use Google PubSub to emit happening in one or more microservices similar to AWS for Amazon SQS and other tools like Kafka and RabbitMQ Plugging into all these options makes a webhook gateway such a versatile tool for streaming webhook events from multiple event generating microservice to send the events to the client endpoints Caveats of using Webhooks GatewaysWhile there are several benefits to deploying a Webhooks gateway there are some caveats to keep in mind when adopting a Webhooks gateway for your organisation such as The webhooks gateway is a new software component in your environment It would require learning and building expertise in it Platform Engineers and SREs will need to integrate deploy and maintain this new software component and build production excellence running the webhooks gateway By design a webhooks gateway is responsible for webhooks traffic inbound and outbound of your organisation This therefore becomes a single point of failure for the entire organisation Webhooks gateway then needs to be designed for high availability to ensure no data loss for any webhook traffic In the end webhook gateways aren t one size fits all You can build a webhook gateway in house or acquire an off the shelf solution like Convoy while analysing your system s unique requirements that really caught our interest so we decided to go into more detail and here s the result In this article we will talk about the PHP s call and callStatic magic methods and about the late static binding feature We will see how to use them together to make an Object invoke a method from a different class Class making our OOP coding smoother and without breaking the SOLID principles To explain this we will walk through building some classes methods and traits getting some gaming inspiration from the old but gold Minecraft to have our friendly Steve be able to make some damages thanks to our code Building the skeletonBefore diving into the hard part let s first write the skeleton of our application Let s start with the Models first of all we will need a class called Entity which is the basis both for our character Steve and for the enemies and a Weapon class so we can give our hero some help in fighting the foes Entity phpclass Entity     protected weapon         public function when you re developing and you want to make classes communicate easily having a much cleaner code without mixing their functionalities If you re building a library or a framework like Laravel this helps to make the code style outstanding Let s see how Let s add some code to our Entity php file Entity phpclass Entity public function call name arguments void if name attack                         echo Entity attacked     What s happening here We defined the call magic method that as previously said will be invoked instead of a not defined method The name parameter is the name of the function called and the arguments is an array containing the parameters passed to it So inside of call we can add some logic to control what happens depending on the method name In this first simple step we call the attack method from our Weapon class So let s introduce an incredibly helpful Trait which we ll see in a more detailed way in the second part of this article the ForwardCallTrait trait seamlessly allows calling methods from different classes As I said you will explore this trait more deeply in the next part for now we focus on the fact that it takes both an object and a method as Experience and code cleaning So there s only one thing left to explain if you re still wondering PHP s late static bindingWhat s this new static gt name arguments about Let s first make one step back We created the Entity Class representing a Player a Foe or anything that can perform an action in our ideal Minecraft like game So we will probably extend it Let s finally make a simple empty class named after our cubey friend Steve class Steve extends Entity Now a Steve instance can call all methods from the Entity class The problem is that no instance is created in a static context so you can t use this variable either to call non static methods That s why we need to create a new instance and here comes the tricky part If you create a new instance with new self which could be the first thing coming to mind the later calls will result as made from an Entity instance instead of Steve because at the time of invoking the method there s no instance created yet Using the new static allows this thing to be changed and compute the method using runtime information So the result would be that when call is invoked the class of this would be Steve and not Entity To make this more apparent isn t it Let s connect the dotsSo we had a short but intense trip in these few lines of code Knowing PHP magic methods and patterns can be surprisingly helpful and even with an easy example we showed the power of using call and callStatic methods to handle undefined calls and to address them to other classes We also learned about PHP s late static binding which is really worth knowing when coding a lot in OOP to handle classes and inheritance correctly In the second part of the article you ll see how these patterns are applied in Laravel to ease Developer Experience and to create a fully it s been inspired by epic fantasy series from television Until now the Final Fantasy games have never quite had their angry moody dark moment With nuanced occasionally horny characters and often a lot of violence is this the series moody teenager era FFXVI is the first game in the series made for the PS expanding the detail of both character models and environments While the significant characters move and emote realistically Square Enix has kept an artistic touch to character design The most impressive parts are the environments with gorgeous forests medieval fortresses and major landmarks towering over the usual fields and cliffs you ll be exploring and fighting at The quality isn t consistent enough in an era of games like Horizon Forbidden West Dead Space and nbsp Elden Ring though I noticed when character models and environments weren t given the same attention as key scenes and chapters Unlike previous Final Fantasy games while there s still an ensemble cast you ll only ever control the protagonist Clive ーyes an interesting choice in hero name one that even some in game characters are surprised by You ll eventually be able to offer simple commands to your faithful wolf Torgal and you ll be joined by other companions that will fight entirely independently of you These include your childhood friend Jill the mysterious daddy of thunder Cid and several more spoiler ish additions Fortunately and unlike an awful lot of non playable battle allies in RPGs they can usually attract the attention of a monster or two and even finish off enemies by themselves Still there s no escaping the fact that it s an even looser party battle dynamic than its predecessor Final Fantasy XV let alone older titles The tale of FFXVI is achingly Game Of Thrones y It starts out as a battle of warring states of religion versus monarchy wars for the sake of controlling resources ーor escaping inhospitable land Sometimes the inspiration is a little on the nose Dad dies early on Check Mysterious wolves Check Creepy mother son relations Check However the series has always drawn on pop culture inspiration over the years Dungeons and Dragons Star Wars and Lord of the Rings have all been tugged at for monster names storylines and more Within the opening hours we meet Clive his sickly but chosen younger brother Joshua and their childhood friend Jill Clive and Joshua s mother the Cersei styled Anabella Rosfield swiftly betrays her family and the entire nation The leader her husband is slaughtered in front of Joshua whose latent powers as a dominant fully awakened due to this trauma Arguably even more harrowing a chocobo the game series giant bird mounts gets bricked in the head and someone kills an owl This all happens in the span of a couple of minutes In the form of the giant fire Eikon elemental deity Phoenix Joshua burns enemies and allies alike to ash and as Clive watches horrified he somehow unleashes a new never before seen Eikon of his own Ifrit who has a surprisingly grisly encounter with Phoenix Clive wakes up with no memory of this however while a foreboding figure in a hood watches all of this unfold So yeah the perfect pilot episode of a fantasy series on HBO The superb voice acting and writing really helps sell the melodrama and seriousness of the story For a series often criticized for cliche or awkward translations this is all so much better The voice actor for Cid is Ralph Ineson who was even in GoT Get ready for lots of Yorkshire accents It s time for all to learn what “ta ra means Square Enix notes that even if you pick the Japanese language setting the game s lip sync is set to the English version Square EnixIf you haven t played a Final Fantasy title before ーand Square Enix is positioning this as an action game for that kind of player ーIfrit is usually a run of the mill summonable demon He s rarely a crucial plot pivot so it s cool to see the series subvert expectations and pay tribute to the games of the past There are lots of Easter eggs like this both subtle and obvious The crystal theme originally penned for the first Final Fantasy game on the Nintendo Entertainment System is remixed and dropped in during multiple points of the game while Cid a character found in every FF game either as a non playable character or party member has a daughter called Mid ーa reference to the grandson of Final Fantasy V s version of Cid While other games including spin offs and Final Fantasy XV have touched on real time combat Final Fantasy XVI goes all in It s dangerous new territory for a series with some die hard fans but possibly a necessary move to attract a new audience But it s not Devil May Fantasy It doesn t appear to be a particularly deep system on either the default or story centric difficulties I found myself leaning on abilities I knew could do sustained damage doing well timed dodges and countering There are layers to battles but they re easy to ignore Mid game skills like the ability to jump and then kick off an enemy or launch yourself into the air with a pull attack normally used to sling smaller enemies toward you offer some more vertical approaches to combat However I rarely needed to figure this out during battles and it was more about relentlessly attacking and paying attention to incoming attacks that enemies usually signposted Clive will bolster his initial fire attacks courtesy of Phoenix with skills from other Eikons adding new forms of attack or counters If there s some kind of elemental scissors paper rock dynamic I didn t notice it or missed an explanation The major difference between action and story focus modes is the inclusion of several accessories that make FFXVI one of the most accessible and forgiving action RPGs I ve ever played You ll start the game with a handful of accessories like the Ring of Timely Focus which slows down when an evadable attack approaches giving you ample time to dodge The Ring of Timely Strikes will unleash a barrage of complex attacks just by spamming the square button I played with the Ring of Timely Focus occasionally equipped helping me to hold my own in more difficult scenes filled with enemies but tried to fight the bigger enemies and bosses with only my own skills There is a new game plus mode that offers hardier enemies and challenges but I haven t had time to play it yet The bosses while spectacular have a tendency towards being damage sponges especially the Eikon on Eikon fights that typically include three or more transitions in a single battle Once you ve figured out the timing of dodges to attacks it s often repeated to boredom But hey they always look cool Some of these boss fights are incredibly epic and I mean Bayonetta level of ridiculous There aren t many boss battles in video games that reach the level of Clive s duel against Bahamut…Final Fantasy XVI also has a wonderful hidden weapon Its own built in wiki Active Time Lore a play on active time battles from the series arguable heyday of the late s not only fills in the narrative gaps plaguing FF but plenty of other politically tilted RPGs Both FFXII and FFXIII suffered from lots of fictional terminology and complicated back story With the latter developers relegated anything close to a glossary to menus that were difficult to navigate and consequently rarely investigated Square EnixActive Time Lore which can be summoned from the touchpad during almost any scene or area brings a convenient shortcut to that tip of the tongue which warring state is he from again quandary It s an elegant solution inspired by Amazon Prime Video s X Ray feature It also ensures gamers don t come undone when there are so many political maneuverings time skips false deaths and hooded strangers All of this is augmented by Vivian a character whose sole purpose appears to be educating Clive about the wider political implications of his fight to dismantle the political structure around huge magical crystals by destroying them dominants by besting them usually and freeing indentured magic wielding slaves All while seeking vengeance for his brother Talking with her at your base of operations will open a handy personnel chart of all the main characters their associates and the rest It also comes with a chronological slider so you can guess who ll betray who next If you came undone during a season of Game of Thrones you might understand why this could be needed Square EnixFinal Fantasy XVI is different perhaps due to the producer Naoki Yoshida who worked on the online MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV as both producer and director But with Final Fantasy VII Remake including the next chapter offering the party battles I want I don t see a problem in Square Enix taking the series in this direction I miss the party battle dynamics but I didn t feel hamstrung by my own mediocre action game reflexes or skills If you are looking for challenging battles the game comes with post game content aimed at completionists and the muscular of thumb But for those looking for a fantasy adventure with a plot that s kept me hooked so far the sixteenth
