Intro to Python: Day 11 - Another Class Inheritance Example |

Intro to Python Day Another Class Inheritance ExampleHi there I m a New York City based web developer documenting my journey with React React Native and Python for all to see Please follow my dev to profile or my twitter for updates and feel free to reach out if you have questions Thanks for your support Today in my journey with boot dev I encountered a fun problem that we solved using OOP and class based inheritance A rectangle is a shape with four sides where the length of the sides is equal and the length of the top and bottom are equal but the top and bottom don t need to be equal to the length of the sides A square is a type of rectangle but all four sides must be the same length So if we make a Rectangle class to get the perimeter and area of any given rectangle where we need to input the length of the x axis sides and the length of the y axis sides in order to get that information like so class Rectangle def init self length width self length length self width width def get area self return self length self width def get perimeter self return self length self width then we should be able to quickly build a Square class that inherits these methods but is automatically instantiated using only the length of one of its sides since all sides of a square are the same length class Square Rectangle def init self length super init length length Behold the power of OOP Unlike dragons and cars and other fairly non sensical use cases I could see actually using something like this if I were say building a house maybe Idk If you like projects like this and want to stay up to date with more check out my Twitter stonestwebdev I follow back See you tomorrow for another project |

Which engineering scope are you using? |
https://dev.to/freddyhm/which-engineering-scope-are-you-using-3nil
|
Which engineering scope are you using In the few years I ve been working in tech I ve started to see common patterns that engineers adopt to solve most problems For example here s a popular problem with different approaches Problem The way we clean our client s archives is complex and messy Craftsman s scope How to make the piece better Maybe we can simplify the clean up script Can we possibly use another language with built in features we can leverage maybe one with less dependencies It s the stereotypical engineering work we find in TV and movies This is the scope that can spend days or years focused on extracting of efficiency out of a component It s where algorithms are born and faster compute time is achieved Architect s scope How to make the system better Since the data is spread out evenly maybe we can create a centralized service that cleans each archive at a certain frequency The Architect scope is focused on arranging the pieces to produce an elegant system Tools for this problem are still rooted in technology but seen through a lens that encompasses more abstract concepts like patterns relationships coordination and communication Entrepreneurial s scope How to serve the client better Maybe we should confirm that our users even need this data How often do they access it Can they live with only the last X number of backups In this scope technology is simply a giant lever to fill a real need Communication and vision are the most useful tools here since uncovering needs and addressing them efficiently is much more about understanding than technology s use Finding a great solution requires the right mixI believe much of what plagues software engineering is that we simply copy roles from other disciplines but we don t organize our thinking around what those roles actually mean Or ignore the fact that some scopes tend to misalign with people s preference Titles like architect senior engineer and manager should technically embody one scope over the other but I rarely see that level of separation in thinking Especially when those positions are filled by engineers who have spent years looking at problems deeply through a Craftsman scope If you ve ever had a manager spend hours preaching the benefits of a mapping library while you have yet to have a talk about your career progression you can see the scope misuse at work My hypothesis When the three scopes are used effectively teams are much more productive in achieving the best possible solution to a given problem Have you seen these scopes in the wild Do you lean towards one more than the other Image references Photo by Markus Spiske on UnsplashPhoto by Rob Lambert on UnsplashPhoto by ThisisEngineering RAEng on UnsplashPhoto by Clem Onojeghuo on Unsplash |

MLH Fellowship - My Experience |
https://dev.to/anubhav-gupta/mlh-fellowship-my-experience-fnm
|
MLH Fellowship My ExperienceIn this article I share everything that you need to know about the MLH Fellowship program what is it the interview process and my experience being a fellow of the prep program What is MLH Fellowship The MLH Fellowship is a week internship alternative for aspiring technologists The different programs pair a fun educational curriculum with practical experience that you can put on your resume right away It s collaborative remote and happens under the guidance of expert mentors The program is divided into tracks that align with the different career interests that Fellows have The different tracks that the fellowship has to offer are as follows Software EngineeringWeb EngineeringSite Reliability EngineeringThere is another program called the Prep Program which is a week preparation program for those who are interested in experiencing the fellowship before committing to the full weeks You ll build out your portfolio of personal projects amp experiment with new technologies by collaborating in small groups through a short hackathon sprint About the Interview Process Let s have a look at how to apply for the fellowship the interview process and how to ace your interviews To apply for the fellowship you can go to their official website and apply directly from there The selection process is divided into stages The initial applicationThe behavioral interviewThe technical interviewLet s have a look at each stage separately in detail The Initial ApplicationThis is the very first round of the selection process the application round Essays The majority of the applicants are filtered here so don t take it lightly Make sure to take your time when answering the questions The questions are made to understand you better and your interests Pro Tip The interviewers are looking for these specific things in your applications Are you passionate enough about the fellowship Are you dedicated enough Are you open to learning and collaborating with others Make sure to cover these when writing your answers Code Sample This is another area where a lot of applicants get rejected You are expected to submit a code sample project which you have worked on The complexity of the project depends upon the program and track you are applying for For example A simple static site might work for the Prep Program but it may not work for the full fellowship if applying for a backend track The Behavioral InterviewAfter about weeks of submitting your initial application you would get a response from MLH about if you are selected for the next round or not If your application gets approved you are invited for a behavioral interview This is a general interview and not a technical interview It is conducted to confirm your eligibility and to check if you can communicate effectively with a proper internet connection What to expect in the interview You ll be asked general questions like an introduction of yourself why you want to be an MLH fellow and then some questions confirming your eligibility to join the fellowship This is a relatively easy interview round as no such preparation is needed for this round Although some people do get rejected in this round as well so make sure to answer the questions effectively The Technical InterviewThis is the final interview round After about another weeks you would be invited to a technical interview if you made it past the previous round In this round your technical skills are assessed The duration of the technical interview is minutes What to expect in the interview You have to share your screen and present the code sample which you submitted during the application You will have to explain how your code works The interviewer will ask you questions from this code sample itself so make you know what you have written and how it works What they want to see is your passion for the project how did you build it what made you pursue it and what would you change about it That s it about the interview process Now sit back and relax and wait for the final review and matchmaking The interviewers will evaluate your overall performance and would let you know if you get selected The final result typically comes about weeks before the program start date My Experience as a fellow I was a part of MLH s Prep Program the batch of Spring i e January This is our pod GC Cheetahs Day The first day was full of anxiety for me thinking and worrying about what would happen Everyone joined the meeting and our pod leader Gabriel Cruz introduced himself and briefed us about what to expect from the fellowship After this was the introduction time but MLH never fails to amaze us with its innovative ideas Instead of the standard introduction in which everyone tells about themselves someone else introduced us We were sent to private breakout rooms in groups of each where we had to interact with the other person so that we could get to know them After this we were sent back to the main meeting and the other person whom I interacted with had to introduce and tell everyone about me Vice versa I had to give an introduction to the person I interacted with This way everyone was introduced to the pod After a few days we were told that we had to work on a total of projects We assigned ourselves issues and started working together in groups of depending upon the issue s size Pod Meetings Daily StandupsEvery day we used to have our pod s meeting for hr where everyone was expected to be present These were daily standups and retros in which everyone shared what did they work in the past hours and what will they be doing in the next hours There also used to be a general discussion on the project and how to go about it Let s come to the fun part games Yes we used to frequently play games with the whole pod during these meetings as well Can t express through words the fun we had playing those games especially Gartic Phones I remember how a China flag turned into a fat man and then whatnot We also had a concept of lightning talks In this every day one of us had to teach a certain topic to the entire pod The topic could be anything of our choice which we would like to teach and which we master I was very nervous when it was my chance as I had never taught a technical concept to this many people before However my presentation turned out to be excellent and I received very positive feedback from my pod mates This certainly motivated me to teach to an even larger audience and has given me confidence in public speaking My Personal ExperienceThe fellowship was not just limited to the daily pod meeting of hr We spent most of the time interacting outside of the daily meetings I remember how we used to stay in meetings while working on issues together till late at night sometimes even AM When I was a part of the fellowship it was covid time I used to have my online college in the morning which I hardly attended LOL and slept during that time and then used to stay up till late at night while interacting with my pod mates At a more personal level the fellowship had a very good impact on me I was just in nd year of Engineering when I was a part of this program out of folks in the pod were from rd year or even older than that This gave me an advantage as I had access to the most valuable resource mentorship Those people guided me and helped me make a better career choice Imagine getting guidance and mentorship at a personal level from people who have achieved so much in their life GSoC LFX Microsoft Uber and more They expanded my knowledge to a very good level and introduced me to the various career options and what should I do to achieve them just like they did This one is a candid picture and don t mind our sleepy faces as it was past midnight here in India ConclusionI would recommend you apply for the fellowship no matter you get selected or not If you get rejected MLH always says it s not now and not never If you get selected you ll have the best experience of your life just like I had Ultimately it depends on you how you make the maximum out of the opportunity you are getting If you liked this article and you think it helped you know about the program consider giving this post a like and sharing it with your friends who might have the same doubt If you still got any questions you can reach out to me on my socials Twitter or Linkedin and I ll be more than happy to help |

The best budget laptops for 2023 |
https://www.engadget.com/best-budget-laptop-150038435.html?src=rss
|
The best budget laptops for Not everyone wants or needs to spend a boatload of money on a new laptop Depending on how you use your notebook ーif you re a student creative professional or just web browsing ーit may not be necessary for you to drop thousands on the latest model with top of the line specs Budget laptops do exist even if they don t get as much attention as their flagship counterparts If you re looking to spend only what you absolutely must on your next laptop we ve got a number of top picks for you to consider plus some shopping advice that can help you choose the best budget laptop for you What to look for in a budget laptopFirst we at Engadget consider anything under to be “budget in the laptop space The reason for this is twofold even the most affordable flagship laptops typically start at or more and if you go dramatically lower than that say or less that s where you ll really start to see compromises in performance You ll typically find the best balance of power and price in the to range But in this guide we ll cover top picks at a wide range of prices ーthere are a number of excellent options on the low and high end of the budget spectrum Arguably the biggest thing to look for in a cheap laptop is a decent spec sheet You might be able to find configuration options with the latest generation CPU chipsets or you may have to go for one that has a slightly older processor We recommend trying to find a notebook with the most up to date internals as possible but know that if you pick a machine with a CPU that s one generation behind it probably will not significantly affect performance Along with processors you should also consider the amount of memory and storage you need in a daily driver For the former we recommend laptops with at least GB of RAM anything with less than that will have a hard time multitasking and managing all those browser tabs The latter is a bit more personal how much onboard storage you need really depends on how many apps files photos documents and more you will save locally As a general rule of thumb try to go for a laptop that has at least a GB SSD this only goes for macOS and Windows machines as Chromebooks are a bit different That should give you enough space for programs and files plus room for future operating system updates After determining the best performance you can get while sticking to your budget it s also worth examining a few different design aspects We recommend picking a machine with a mostly metal body a screen that has at least a p resolution and a keyboard and trackpad area that s relatively spacious Any affordable laptop worth purchasing will have a built in webcam but most of them top out at p A few of the latest models have p webcams but you may want to consider a standalone peripheral if you spend a ton of time on Zoom meetings Be sure to check out the port situation as well Many laptops closer to will have fewer ports than their more affordable counterparts as counterintuitive as that may seem You ll find at least one or two USB C ports on the newest machines which means you may need a separate dongle if you frequently have to connect to SD cards A note about refurbished laptopsRefurbished laptops are another option to consider if you need a new machine and don t want to spend a ton of money Buying refurbished tech can be tricky if you re unfamiliar with a brand s or merchant s policies surrounding what they classify as “refurbished But it s not impossible ーfor laptops we recommend going directly to the manufacturer for refurbished devices Apple Dell and Microsoft all have official refurbishment processes that their devices go through before they re put back on the market that verifies the machines work properly and are in good condition Third party retailers like Amazon and Walmart also have their own refurbishment programs for laptops and other gadgets as well The best budget laptopsBest overall MacBook Air MThere s a reason Apple kept the MacBook Air M in its lineup even after coming out with the inch and inch Air M laptops The first machine with Apple s custom system on a chip the Air M was released at the end of and proved that the company didn t need Intel to power its notebooks anymore The M processor gave the Air blazing fast performance with a responsiveness akin to that of an iPad Pro That hasn t changed even after the launch of the M chipset and the latest Air powered by it You re still going to get impressive performance from the entry level MacBook Air M that will be just right for most people as a daily driver The Air M has the classic wedge design we ve seen in this family of notebooks for years which some will appreciate It may not be the refined profile that the M machine has but it s still thin and light and since it lacks a fan it ll be super quiet as well The inch Retina display is lovely and it s accompanied by a comfortable keyboard sans TouchBar and a spacious trackpad Battery life clocked in at nearly hours in our testing which will be more than enough for a full day s work It may be at the top end of our budget price range starting at but it will be money well spent Also we ve frequently seen the MacBook Air M drop to or when it goes on sale at Amazon and other retailers Read our full review of the Apple MacBook Air MBest budget Windows laptop HP Pavilion Aero If you like the general aesthetics of machines like Dell s XPS but don t want to pay or more the HP Pavilion Aero is your best bet We gave it a score of in our review and compared it to Dell s flagship laptop It s certainly not as sleek as that machine but it comes pretty close with its angled profile pound weight and its anti glare inch display Despite its keyboard being a little cramped it s a solid typing machine and we appreciate all of its connectivity options one USB C port two USB A ports an HDMI connector and a headphone jack You can currently pick an Aero up for as low as but they have gone on sale for even less All of the prebuilt base models available from HP directly come with Ryzen processors and you can customize the laptop to have up to a Ryzen CPU GB of RAM and a TB SSD Read our full review of the HP Pavilion Aero Best Chromebook Lenovo IdeaPad Flex iIt s been a couple of years since we named Lenovo s IdeaPad Flex i our favorite Chromebook and it remains our top pick today That s because it still has the best mix of specs and features that will suit most Chrome OS lovers It runs on an th generation Intel Core i processor has GB of RAM and GB of storage Plus its bright inch p touchscreen is great for working in Google Docs and streaming on Netflix While not a standout in the design department this convertible is relatively lightweight and we appreciate that it comes with a backlit keyboard ーsomething you don t often see in laptops at this price point It should also last around eight hours on a single charge or long enough to get you through a typical work day You re getting a solid port collection here too two USB Cs one USB A a microSD card slot and a headphone jack All of that keeps the Flex i ahead of the Chromebook pack and its affordable price tag makes it even better Read our full review of the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex iBest under Acer Aspire Acer s Aspire family is a solid Windows option if you have less than to spend on a new laptop The most recent models hit a good middle ground for most people running on Intel th gen CPUs and supporting up to GB of RAM and up to GB of storage Of course the higher specs you get the more expensive the machine will be ーnot all Aspire laptops come in at under But you can currently pick up a model with a inch p display Core i processor GB of RAM and GB of storage for about or less if it s on sale Design is pretty basic here but you do get a handy number pad and a variety of ports including one USB C connector three USB A ports and an Ethernet port We also appreciate that the latest Aspire s support WiFi and Acer upped the estimated battery life to hours This article originally appeared on Engadget at |

Can 'modeling' microphones deliver on their copycat promise? |
https://www.engadget.com/can-modeling-microphones-deliver-on-their-copycat-promise-133036629.html?src=rss
|
Can x modeling x microphones deliver on their copycat promise The humble microphone For many it s little more than a tool for a Zoom call For streamers and podcasters it s a utilitarian bit of kit But for some ーsingers musicians and other recording artists ーit s an instrument as characteristic and expressive as any guitar or piano The microphone is often the biggest investment these performers ever make If you want a different “timbre to your recordings then you could just buy a lot of microphones Alternatively you might consider a “modeling mic one specifically designed to imitate the character of famous and usually expensive models For those not wanting to spend “small condo levels of money on a well stocked mic locker something like the Sphere LX from Universal Audio offers a tantalizing prospect It s one of the aforementioned modeling mics and it claims to mimic of the most sought after microphones of all time The Sphere LX itself is a condenser microphone but thanks to its dual capsule setup most mics only have one it s able to do some pretty funky stuff Not only can it pretend to be a dynamic or ribbon mic both of which use different technology to a condenser it can imitate environmental factors such as distance from the mic and or different recording spaces You can even blend two different virtual microphones at the same time for added versatility It all sounds very clever on paper but does it actually sound well…good Universal AudioBefore we get to that it s worth understanding the setup required As the Sphere LX has two capsules the “sensor part it outputs in stereo unlike most vocal microphones that record in mono This means it ships with a specific XLR splitter cable that requires two ports on your audio interface So if your setup currently only has one you d need to find a new one with multiple inputs Shameless plug I wrote an audio interface buyer s guide that you can read right here There are some important steps to take before you can start experimenting with your new virtual microphones First if possible you ll want to “bind the two input channels on your interface so that they operate as one This locks their gain levels so you don t need to worry about the physical volume controls being different which could impact the effectiveness of the modeling It s also important to remove any processing your interface might apply For example Universal Audio s own Volt interface has hardware compression and EQ which you don t want applied here Other interfaces also can apply light processing or compression by default so you will definitely want to check your interface s settings Sometimes such processing requires turning off via software so watch out for that too With the hardware set you ll want to open the Sphere s companion software It s a VST plugin and therefore runs within other software ーAbleton Live Logic Pro or even Garageband will do Drop the plugin onto the same audio channel assigned to the Sphere LX s output and you re set to record Actually you can even record first and then add the software later as the emulation can be applied to any recorded audio but only recordings from the Sphere will “match the emulated mic Universal AudioIn the most simple use case you would record your vocal with the Sphere LX and then choose the microphone you want it to sound like in the software Then all you need to do is export the audio and you re done You can even go back change the emulation to another microphone and export it a second time but why stop there One of the key benefits of the dual capsule system in the Sphere LX over say something like Slate s M VMS system is that it allows for things like changing the direction you were addressing the “mic after the fact If you recorded into the Sphere head on but wanted a slightly off axis sound useful for taming high frequencies from a guitar for example you can do that in the software after the fact You can even change the polar pattern the shape area around the capsule in which sound is received While this feels a bit like witchcraft ーchanging the physical qualities of a microphone after something has been recorded ーit serves both practical and aesthetic purposes On the practical side you can theoretically record once and “try out different microphones mic placements and polar patterns This not only saves time with the vocalist or musician you won t need to keep moving gear around perfect if you have a smaller space Engadget ·Universal Audio Sphere LX mic modeling examplesIn practice unless you have all of these classic microphones for comparison it s obviously hard to know how close the Sphere LX comes to the originals I happen to have three of the microphones that are modeled by the system Sennheiser s MD Neumann s TLM and Shure s SMB although I use them primarily for spoken word podcasting and streaming On simple tests with voice recordings the Sphere LX comes really close for all three There are definitely differences but given that two units of the same mic can develop variations from each other over time the LX likely falls within those differential boundaries This is further reinforced by listening back to the raw audio captured by the Sphere which is very very far from what it sounds like with emulation applied I was particularly interested in how well the Sphere LX would emulate the SMB and the Sennheiser MD as these are both dynamic microphones Condenser microphones work very differently so the idea that one could imitate the other was interesting Condenser mics are generally favored in vocal studios as they capture more detail but dynamic mics are better for those with less than ideal recording conditions Being able to flip between the two with one mic would be both convenient and impressive The MD in particular has a unique character for a dynamic microphone with a surprisingly detailed lively sound With a straight voice test the Sphere LX doesn t quite capture those trademark “sparkle frequencies but it definitely does a good job on generally sounding like the Sennheiser ーand it s distinct from its imitation of the SMB also a dynamic mic but with more emphasis on the lower frequencies Engadget ·Modeling mic versus modeling softwareWhile the comparison shows a decent facsimile of the Sennheiser s sound it s worth noting that both the MD and the SMB have a physical highpass filters built in that can be adjusted through different settings of bass roll off This isn t something that s replicated in the Sphere s companion app so if you wanted any sound other than their default you would need to apply some post processing There are some other challenges too In almost every other recording situation once the track is laid down the take is set in stone You can manipulate it after the fact of course but the take itself is immovable With the Sphere LX and similar systems you can reimagine the recording the moment the singer s lips stop moving Flicking through each virtual mic and the related setting until you find the one you like the most This could obviously be a good thing but option paralysis is the death of many a good audio project The appeal of these systems could also depend on your budget and whether you feel confident that they will remain supported by the manufacturer This is particularly prudent for professionals “I find with anything like that you re into what s it going to be worth in the next you know five years Or when they decide to make the mic redundant which I ve found on products that involve anything software Chris Denman CEO of Skyrocket Audio and professional sound engineer told Engadget The redundancy isn t a huge risk unlike many app dependent gadgets as VSTs can live outside of an app store but something to consider IK MultimediaIf you re curious about microphone modeling but don t want to jump right into a hardware system there are software products that claim to do a similar thing without the outlay Something like IK Multimedia s “Mic Room plugin for example offers a similar roster of mics for well under To get the best results your current mic will need to be one the app has a reference for so there s possibly an additional spend and the results aren t as accurate or as configurable as the Sphere LX but it s an easy way to experiment before committing to something like Universal Audio s solution All in all whether mic modeling is right for you will come down to personal preference economics and the projects you need it for For casual users looking for a do it all mic it s perhaps a little complex and costly However for singers looking for a streamlined versatile setup it almost feels like a no brainer There will be plenty of use cases that fall between and either way it s a really interesting concept that will likely only continue to become more accessible This article originally appeared on Engadget at |
