海外TECH	DEV Community	From Floppies to Dial-Up : Reminiscing the Tech Days Gone By	https://dev.to/devrx/from-floppies-to-dial-up-reminiscing-the-tech-days-gone-by-2la2	From Floppies to Dial Up Reminiscing the Tech Days Gone ByGreetings fellow tech enthusiasts In the midst of our rapid technological advancements it s easy to forget the gadgets and systems that once paved the way for the innovations we enjoy today As someone who s usually deep in the code trenches or navigating the latest tech developments I find it fascinating to look back at the foundational pieces of tech that have become obsolete If you haven t used a DVD or a Floppy you are too young to be called a programmer Let s delve into some of these technological relics and appreciate their significance in our tech journey The Floppy Disk Data s Humble Beginnings In today s age of massive cloud storages and lightning fast SSDs it s almost poetic to think back to the time of the floppy disk Remember when these plastic squares with their protective metal slide were the very essence of data portability Those MB of storage might draw a chuckle when compared to today s terabytes but they were the trusted allies of many whether for saving a school project booting up an operating system or sending Humans to the Moon The tactile satisfaction of sliding one into a drive hearing it whirl and access data is something that s lost in today s touch and swipe era Pagers The Dawn of Instant Communication Long before the noisy pings from our smartphones became the norm there was the subtle beep of the pager Clipped to belts or tucked into shirt pockets these devices were the epitome of being connected The anticipation of seeing a new number pop up and then finding a phone to return the call was a ritual for many In a way they were the unsung heroes silently vibrating bridging gaps and keeping people in touch in a world that wasn t yet fully online VHS Tapes Analog Entertainment The tactile joy of holding a VHS with its rectangular solidity and the gentle whirr as you rewound a tape is a memory etched in many of our hearts Although I personally never had a chance to hold one it was really fascinating for me to see the Hollowood stars popping one into a VCR as they went on to their Friday night parties Sony s Walkman and Discman The Evolution of Portable Music Picture this a sunny day a Walkman clipped to your belt headphones on and the world fades away as the cassette plays your favorite tunes Or the Discman with its anti skip technology making it possible to carry a CD s worth of music on the go These weren t just devices they were statements In my days if you owned any one of these you were considered the richest and the collest person in the hood Before playlists were crafted with algorithms we had mixtapes and CDs carefully curated often replayed and deeply cherished Looking back it s evident that while these technologies have become obsolete they played crucial roles in shaping the tech landscape we navigate today It serves as a reminder that innovation is a continuous journey and what s cutting edge now may be a fond memory in the future I hope you enjoyed my perspective on the ever changing world It s astounding to see how far we ve come in today s age This blog was MY way of expressing gratitude to the long gone Fancy Tech Era The pace of technology is relentless While we embrace the new we must never forget the roots that laid the foundation If our forefathers hadn t developed these technologies would the Apollo mission have succeeded Until our next tech exploration stay curious and keep innovating	2023-08-19 09:00:50
海外TECH	Engadget	California DMV is investigating a Cruise robotaxi's collision with a fire truck	https://www.engadget.com/california-dmv-is-investigating-a-cruise-robotaxis-collision-with-a-fire-truck-093037885.html?src=rss	California DMV is investigating a Cruise robotaxi x s collision with a fire truckCruise will temporarily be deploying fewer autonomous vehicles in San Francisco while investigators are looking into quot recent concerning incidents quot involving its fleet According to The New York Times and TechCrunch the California Department of Motor Vehicles asked the company to cut its fleet in half after an incident wherein one of Cruise s robotaxis collided with a fire truck at an intersection The fire truck had its sirens and red lights on and was responding to an emergency at the time while the robotaxi has passengers onboard who sustained non life threatening injuries In another perhaps less controversial incident a few days before that a Cruise vehicle got stuck in wet concrete nbsp The DMV said in a statement that its primary focus is quot the safe operation of autonomous vehicles and safety of the public who share the road with these vehicles quot It also added that it quot reserves the right following investigation of the facts to suspend or revoke testing and or deployment permits quot if it determines that a company s vehicles is a threat to public safety The agency has asked Cruise to limit its driverless vehicles in operation to during daytime and at night at least until the investigation is done nbsp In an explanation about the collision posted on the company s website Cruise s General Manager for San Francisco Greg Dietrerich said the robotaxi identified the emergency vehicle as soon as it came into view It was also able to distinguish the fire truck s sirens quot as soon as it was distinguishable from the background noise quot However it wasn t possible to see vehicles coming from around the corner quot until they are physically very close to the intersection quot where the incident happened Further the autonomous vehicle had trouble predicting the fire truck s path because it moved into the quot oncoming lane of traffic quot to bypass a red light Dietrerich said Cruise s AV identified the risk of a collision and hit the brake to reduce its speed but it wasn t able to avoid the crash completely due to those conditions nbsp The DMV s request comes just a few days after the California Public Utilities Commission CPUC voted in favor of allowing both Cruise and Waymo to charge fares for fully driverless rides any time of the day in San Francisco Before that Cruise could only offer fared rides with no safety driver onboard in limited areas of the city between PM and AM The only commissioner who voted against the companies paid ride expansion argued that the CPUC didn t have enough information to accurately evaluate the impact of autonomous vehicles on first responders This article originally appeared on Engadget at	2023-08-19 09:30:37
