My Smart Working Experience: Pros and Cons |
https://dev.to/this-is-learning/my-smart-working-experience-pros-and-cons-bkm
|
My Smart Working Experience Pros and ConsI m doing smart working in a full remote company for a couple of years These are the pros and cons based on my personal experience Let s begin with what I don t like and what I feel I m missing from when I was working from the office we ll get into the positive aspects later This article is the script of the following video you can watch it on YouTube Feeling alone I think we should immediately address the elephant in the room am I feeling alone First of all I m quite a shy and introverted person and this probably helps me out on that as long as I don t isolate myself too much Most of the time I enjoy either the silence in my room or listening to the music I like in the speakers and anyway I know that I can always reach out to my colleagues in case of need or if I just to have a chat From what I ve seen myself and heard from other people the company s culture is the game changer here I m currently in a full remote company we do not have an office at all which means everyone works from the place they like and every internal policy and process is designed for a distributed team To compare it to the previous company where due to Covid we were in a hybrid emergency situation I actually felt more alone there Isolated to be precise The worst part was when most of the team was in the office and it was my turn working from home You know FOMO fear of missing out right That s what I felt I was missing out on the conversations the jokes which I knew were taking place in the office Even calling someone that was in the office felt a bit awkward for example if the other colleagues were going on a coffee break the one you called had to decide if stay on call with you or join the others and leave you alone I also felt the same while being at the office in call with someone at home It s been quite uncomfortable Being remote on the other hand means that everyone is in the same situation I m not missing anything and everyone is always happy to have a chat or a call Disconnecting Speaking of being alone at some point you might want to disconnect entirely I mean even if the schedule is flexible you re not supposed to work and no one wants you to do that When you associate work with being physically in the office it s easier to disconnect as you just leave the office You re disconnected and everyone knows they ll have to wait until tomorrow When you work from home it might not be that simple Is it a problem for me First of all I m a notification person I receive emails and Slack messages on my phone and I was like that even before working from home That s probably not a healthy habit I should definitely work on that but I have to say I have wonderful colleagues and clients that respect my time and don t expect me to reply immediately We all agree that a proper meaningful answer is way better than a quick and possibly incomplete one Once more the culture of the people you re working with is what makes smart and remote successful or not If someone is expecting you to be immediately available at any time it s not on remote working but on that person in particular not being respectful of your time Less unexpected help Speaking of cooperation I have to say it is true that it s not as easy as in the office A quick example if you re a junior developer you might benefit a lot from the senior colleague walking next to your desk and offering you for some help or advice In a remote environment it is more up to you to be more proactive and ask for help if needed Not being in person might indeed create some friction but we also have to say that sending a Slack or Teams message shouldn t be a big deal In any case this is not necessarily a bad thing as it helped me be even more independent even if I have to admit I should probably ask for help more often as it could actually save me some time and produce better results Protected time during commute The last downside is tightly bound to the first pros on the list and I m talking about the commute In my case I was going to work by train half an hour on board and then minutes walking to the office to be precise I was carrying an electric scooter with me but that s another story The thing is that half an hour on the train was kind of enjoyable You cannot skip that you re minutes hostage on a chair waiting so it s up to you if you want to entirely waste that time or do something meaningful with it So I used to read books and this means almost on every work day I was reading for about an hour This was also giving me some momentum to keep reading before going to sleep as well So why is this on the downsides of working from home I mean no one stops me from protecting an hour a day to have some good read but feels different At home I have plenty of other activities I can do so I have to be much more intentional if I want to read On the other side while being stuck on the train it was much easier and satisfying No more commute Buuut speaking of the train commute overall I don t miss it At all Here s the list of Pros of working remotely I ve experienced so far Using public transportation means having to deal with delays cancellations strikes bad weather and so on And also it takes time and money I could probably save some time but for sure not money by going by car but this would mean having to deal with traffic parking polluting the environment and so on Being able to work from wherever I want which is usually at home for me it is actually saving me so much time and money and has a great impact on my life quality too Way less stressful Pick your company Besides no longer requiring to physically be in the office means I don t need to take into consideration how far the office is located or if an office exists at all Instead of being limited to the companies in a few kilometres radius from my home I can carefully select and pick the company I like the most even if it s located on the other side of the world if I want to As of today I m working for Claranet Italia based in Italy as the name suggests and the cool thing is that we re all spread across the country from the southmost region to the northmost region I wouldn t be able to work with all those amazing people if we had to be in the same place since we live in different cities I love my hometown and I m happy I didn t have to relocate when I changed job but in case I want to move to another city for whatever reason I don t actually have to worry about finding a new job I can just keep working for the same company Organize my time It is true that you need to be more intentional about your time but it s also true that you have much more freedom to organize it I can decide to wake up earlier and start working earlier or I can decide to sleep a bit more and start working later always according to the tasks and meetings I have on that day Taking breaks is also easier I can decide to go for a walk or do some exercise or even go to the supermarket while it s not too crowded as I can easily make up for that time later on during the day While everyone is stuck in the checkout line buying their groceries at pm I m probably comfortably sitting on my chair doing some code reviews before going to prepare dinner This clashes with the difficulty of disconnecting but at the cost of repeating myself a dozen times working remotely requires a healthy company culture which respects your time and fosters your independence Doing smart work in a company not designed for that might give you a hard time disconnecting instead doing remote work in a company that embraces it will give you much more freedom to organize your time As always it s all about the right people If you re working from home but your employer still requires you to clock in and clock out you better find a new job Eat healthier Since I have the chance of buying some food outside the rush hours I have a better selection of ingredients to cook my pasta for lunch every day Did I already mention I m Italian Lunch equals pasta for me and being at home means I can properly cook it every day I don t miss a single bite of that microwaved pasta I had to eat while in the office Disgusting Enjoy the silence I briefly mentioned at the beginning of this article that being alone in the room has some advantages One of them is that I can enjoy the silence during a debugging session or when I need to laser focus on a task If I want to listen to some music I can do that as well without bothering anyone else and without headphones I don t really like headphones Oh and also I can also decide the room temperature which is often a war every day in the office between that one who s always cold and the other one constantly sweating because of the heat while being in the same room at the same temperature sitting one next to the other We re hiring Before stepping to conclusions if you re based in Italy and you re looking for a remote job my company is hiring I m sorry but due to legal requirements for now we can only hire in Italy Qui di seguito un po di link FrontendBackendCloud EngineerTutte le posizioniSe sei interessato dagli pure un occhio e se hai domande mi trovi su LinkedIn ConclusionAnd this was MY personal experience with smart working so far The conclusion is that as long as the environment is designed for that you re encouraged to be independent and you re not missing out on anything it s a great way to work Flexible time and location no commute no distractions no more microwaved pasta what else could I ask for I m curious to know what s your experience with smart working have you ever tried it Do you like it Do you think it s a bad practice Let me know in the comments below Thanks for watching don t forget to Terraform - Variable Validation |
https://dev.to/pwd9000/terraform-variable-validation-47ka
|
Terraform Variable Validation OverviewToday we will discuss an interesting feature of Terraform by taking a closer look at variable validation rules inside terraform variables variable fruit type string description What fruit to pick default apple validation condition can regex lemon apple mango banana cherry var fruit error message Invalid fruit selected only allowed fruits are lemon apple mango banana cherry Default apple The above example validates the fruit variable against a set of predefined fruits An input that matches the regex pattern passes the validation If any invalid fruit is passed the error message quickly informs the users about the allowed values Terraform s consistent updates have always aimed to make infrastructure as code IaC development more efficient secure and error free One of these updates the addition of a validation capability for input variables has significantly improved this IaC tool s robustness This blog post will demystify Terraform validation discussing its utility and providing practical examples using the Azure platform Understanding Terraform Variable ValidationTerraform s variable validation helps ensure the values assigned to variables meet specific criteria defined in advance Introduced in version this feature allows you to provide custom validation rules for your input variables Validation is essentially added as a validation block within the variable declaration and it uses a condition to determine whether a value is acceptable There are two key components in a variable validation block the condition that expresses the criteria a value must meet and an error message to alert the user if the value doesn t pass the check The condition is a boolean expression When the condition is false Terraform produces an error displaying the custom message The Importance of Terraform Variable ValidationTerraform variable validation brings four key advantages to IaC developers Greater Consistency With variable validation you ensure that acceptable input values adhere to specific standards This fosters uniformity across each infrastructure deployment Error Reduction By flagging erroneous or unacceptable variable inputs the tool drastically reduces errors that might arise during the terraform apply phase Enhanced Security By validating inputs adequately developers can avoid potential security vulnerabilities resulting from insecure or dangerous variable input Improved Developer Experience Validation improves user experience by quickly catching errors and guiding users towards acceptable values accelerating the development process Variable Validation In Action Azure Platform ExamplesLet s dive into some practical use cases of variable validation with Azure infrastructure deployments For instance when creating a virtual machine if a user wants to choose their known operating system we define a terraform variable and validate whether the input falls within our accepted values variable os type description Operating System to use for the VM validation condition contains Windows Linux var os type error message The os type must be either Windows or Linux In the example above we utilize the contains function to validate whether the os type falls within Windows Linux If a user enters an OS type out of this list Terraform will display the error message preventing potential confusion or failure in deployments Similarly you might want to implement a naming convention for a resource group in Azure For example the name must always start with a rg prefix Terraform validation can assist here variable resource group name description Name of the resource group validation condition can regex rg var resource group name error message The resource group name must start with rg Our condition uses a regular expression to test whether the given resource group name starts with rg If not Terraform prompts the user with the specified error message Let s take a look at one more example The following example demonstrates another use case for Terraform s variable validation when working with private DNS records and validating the record type This code sample ensures that only valid DNS record types are specified when deploying resources variable private dns record type type string description value of the private dns record type only allowed options are A AAAA CNAME MX PTR SRV TXT default A validation condition can regex A AAAA CNAME MX PTR SRV TXT var private dns record type error message Invalid value for private dns record type only allowed options are A AAAA CNAME MX PTR SRV TXT The above variable block is a stricter example where it validates the private dns record type against a set of predefined DNS record types An input that matches the regex pattern passes the validation If any invalid DNS record type is passed the error message quickly informs the users about the allowed values This variable validation can then be used in the resource block as follows to create a corresponding private DNS record for that type for example A record exampleresource azurerm private dns a record private dns a record count var private dns record type A name lower var private dns record name resource group name var resource group name ttl var private dns record ttl zone name var private dns zone name records var private dns record value tags var tags or CNAME record exampleresource azurerm private dns cname record private dns cname record count var private dns record type CNAME name lower var private dns record name resource group name var resource group name ttl var private dns record ttl zone name var private dns zone name record var private dns record value tags var tags The resource blocks above creates an Azure Private DNS A or CNAME record but only if the private dns record type variable is A or CNAME for example If the DNS record type doesn t fit that criteria of teh validation count equals and Terraform won t create this record type This approach ensures the correct DNS record gets created based on the initially validated variable and avoids unnecessary or inaccurate resources By integrating variable validation in your Terraform configurations like this you enhance the accuracy and predictability of your deployments With this advanced feature you ll be able to manage resources more effectively on platforms like Azure ConclusionIn summary variable validation enhances Terraform s robustness as an IaC tool by reducing errors improving security and fostering a consistent developer friendly experience Our examples on the Azure platform demonstrate how you can avoid complications by ensuring variable inputs align with your requirements during the infrastructure setup process As you continue to build with Terraform consider this feature to help bolster your code s reliability and your infrastructure s integrity I hope you have enjoyed this post and have learned something new ️ AuthorLike share follow me on Streamlining Transportation Network design with Excel and PythonIntro The transportation problem a classic optimization challenge revolves around determining the optimal distribution of goods from multiple sources to numerous destinations while minimizing overall transportation costs Scenario In the Dusty Outpost Second Chance Recycling has two major collection centers A and B each with different maximum capacities for trailers in a week Collection center A can hold up to trailers while collection center B can accommodate up to trailers The process starts with trailers from the collection points moving to a sortation station where they will be sorted and re consolidated The sorted materials will then be sent to two recycling plants Revive plant and Reborn plant The capacity of Revive plant is trailers and the capacity of Reborn plant is trailers To optimize the flow of goods we need to consider the cost of moving trailers between each location The costs are as follows Transportation legCost TrailerCollection A to Sortation Collection B to Sortation Sortation to Revive Sortation to Reborn Our goal is to find the most cost effective way to transport the trailers from the collection centers to the two recycling plants through the sortation station However it s essential to remember that the sortation station cannot hold any trailers By optimizing this flow efficiently Second Chance Recycling can minimize costs reduce transportation inefficiencies and contribute to a more sustainable recycling process in the Dusty Outpost Mathematical Problem Decision Variable The aim is to find the quantity of trailer positive integer between each leg qtyiqty i qtyiwhere i trailer count for every leg j Objective Function ∑i qtyi∗costj sum i qty i cost j i ∑qtyi∗costjwhere cost is the cost per trailer Constraints a The first leg of the network is to ensure that maximum number of trailers from the plants would be capped to the capacity of the collection plant Legqtyi≤ColCapacityiLeg qty i leq Col Capacity i Legqtyi≤ColCapacityib The second leg of the network is to ensure that maximum number of trailers from the sortation center to plant should the capacity of the collection plant Legqtyi≥PlantCapacityiLeg qty i geq Plant Capacity i Legqtyi≥PlantCapacityic Flow capacity is to enforce that what sum of trailers inbound to sortation plant should be sum of the trailers leaving outbound of the sortation plant ∑Legqtyi ∑Legqtyi sum Leg qty i sum Leg qty i ∑Legqtyi ∑Legqtyi Method Excel SolverThe Decision variable are of Trailer for each transportation leg Highlighted in Yellow cells The object function is to minimise the total Cost of transportation i e trailers cost for the individual leg The constraint The Trailer for each leaving collection point lt Capacity of each collection point Supply capacity constraint The constraint The Sum of all trailer for each recycling plant should be gt Capacity of recycling plant Demand The constraint The flow constraint is Sum of all Trailer inbound to sortation Sum of all trailer outbound Result of Solver Objective Functions Transportation legTrailerCollection A to SortationCollection B to SortationSortation to ReviveSortation to Reborn Method Python PULPimport pulp as op Create the problemprob op LpProblem TrailerOptimization op LpMinimize Decision variablesx op LpVariable x lowBound upBound None cat Integer x op LpVariable x lowBound upBound None cat Integer x op LpVariable x lowBound upBound None cat Integer x op LpVariable x lowBound upBound None cat Integer Set the objective functionprob x x x x Add constraints to the environmentprob x lt prob x lt prob x gt prob x gt prob x x x x Solve the problem other solvers prob solve op SOLVERNAME prob solve The status of the solutionprint Status op LpStatus prob status Print the solution valuesprint Solution print Objective value op value prob objective print x x varValue print x x varValue print x x varValue print x x varValue INTEGER OPTIMAL SOLUTION FOUND Status OptimalSolution Objective value x x x x Summary Each tool brings its own set of advantages and your choice will ultimately depend on the complexity and scale of your transportation optimization needs |

yen bill problems police So ok my brother came to Japan to visit and before in home country changed local currency for yens he asked for yens and he got trolled but very hard by the bank it was exchanged in a well know national bank and not in a shaddy shop they gave him x yen bills He didn t know anything about it he thought it was normal and he didn t know what bills are common or not in Japan so he took it as it good enough Ok fine he is in Japan I didn t noticed about the bills and went for sushi for lunch total was k in Ginza and my brother said “let me pay I have plenty of cash so the surprise was the restaurant staff didn t want to accept the bills they said they are “fake so no way to accept bills those bills are neat mint condition I don t think they were used before and looks brand new looking closely they don t look anywhere fake just brand new My brother even had the receipt from the bank about the exchange for any questions may happened in the airport customs… so no way those bills were fake So we were adamant if you want your money from the lunch is going to be with bills the tencho was start threatening with calling the police if we don t pay I told go ahead I was reading at the same time that bills are legal bank notes in Japan not common I know because in few years here first time seeing bills but legal nevertheless They wanted to close because was pm already and seeing that I was not willing to pay with another currency or way the fucking called the police Yeah fine imagine the typical bullshit with police asking me the papers residence phone everything before I was trying to explain the situation no way police on their duty on checking on gaijins after they check everything we start discussing about the bills even police asked me to pay with another way and lying told them thats the only money I have with me now They check the bills by made phone calls they started talking with the restaurant manager and finally they told that I can pay with that money because is not fake of course its not fucking fake almost hours wasted but was a nice experience for my brother Now the question is that serious business trying to pay with bills in Japan We have like more bills to spend in few days one time was funny but I dont want this happening every time… submitted by u Kubocho to r japanlife link comments |
