10 Surprising Benefits of Using Open-Source Technologies |
https://dev.to/bitstudios1990/10-surprising-benefits-of-using-open-source-technologies-15gd
|
Surprising Benefits of Using Open Source TechnologiesDespite its widespread use many myths surround open source technology However when understood and implemented effectively it can offer surprising benefits for organizations of all sizes Open source technology refers to software whose source code is freely accessible and modifiable by the public enabling a collaborative approach to software development This article aims to dispel myths around open source technology and highlight its advantages helping you decide whether it s right for your business Evolution of Open Source TechnologiesOpen source technology has come a long way since its inception In the s and s academics and corporate researchers commonly shared software openly In the late s open source began to flourish because of the Internet Software like Linus Torvalds Linux operating system and the Apache Group s HTTP Server laid the foundation for today s growth Open source is now accepted and adopted becoming an integral part of various industries Open Source vs Proprietary SoftwareHere are some common myths that surround open source and proprietary software Power and Performance Myth vs RealityOne common misconception is that proprietary software consistently outperforms open source While some proprietary software might offer advanced features there are numerous instances where open source counterparts prove equally powerful if not more so For example Linux an open source operating system powers of the top one million of the world s servers due to its performance and stability Similarly many businesses use open source databases like MySQL and PostgreSQL because of their flexibility and performance Cost and Value Upfront Expense vs Long Term InvestmentAnother prevalent belief is that proprietary software is more cost effective due to bundled support and updates However this view overlooks the long term cost benefits of open source There are no licensing fees for open source software and community support often supplements or even surpasses the support provided by proprietary software vendors Additionally a study in by The Linux Foundation reported that if Linux were to be developed as proprietary software it would cost about billion highlighting the substantial savings of open source Security and Stability Perception vs FactThe common perception is that proprietary software is inherently more secure and stable than open source This perception is only sometimes accurate The transparency of open source code allows for continuous inspection and improvement by a global community of developers contributing to its security For instance the Heartbleed bug in OpenSSL was quickly identified and fixed due to the project s open source nature Surprising Benefits of Using Open Source Technologies Enhanced CustomizabilityOpen source software grants unparalleled customization As such open source software can conform to the most specific business requirements With open access to the source code enterprises can modify the software to align with their operations better An example is SuiteCRM an open source Customer Relationship Management tool Unlike its proprietary counterparts you can adapt SuiteCRM to include custom fields workflows and modules that cater to specific customer management needs The result is a software solution that perfectly fits the individual business s needs enhancing productivity and efficiency in ways that off the shelf software cannot Cost effectivenessWhile there can be costs for implementation maintenance and potential customization the absence of licensing fees often makes open source software more cost effective Consider Red Hat Enterprise Linux an open source operating system Large scale deployments of proprietary operating systems can quickly escalate costs but Red Hat Enterprise Linux eliminates these licensing costs that escalate with large scale deployments of proprietary operating systems Amazon for example saved millions in licensing fees by switching to Linux for their servers Robust Community SupportOpen source projects often boast strong community support Developers and users worldwide collaborate on improvements new features and bug fixes WordPress a popular system for managing content has an extensive community As of May the WordPress plugin directory houses free plugins indicating a vibrant ecosystem enabling businesses to find fixes and enhancements without relying on a specific vendor Increased SecurityOpen source software can be more secure than its proprietary counterparts Because the source code is accessible potential vulnerabilities are quickly identified and rectified For instance Apache web server software has maintained a strong reputation for security and stability thanks to its active community that swiftly addresses security vulnerabilities One of its security flaws CVE was patched quickly within days of discovery Freedom from Vendor Lock inOpen source software provides freedom from vendor lock in where a customer starts depending too much on a vendor for products and services After vendor lock in sets in a customer may be unable to use another vendor without substantial switching costs For instance organizations using the MySQL open source database don t rely on a specific vendor for support They can switch vendors or leverage in house expertise without needing a software infrastructure overhaul Access to Latest InnovationsOpen source communities often pioneer technological innovation By using open source software organizations can access these innovations swiftly Docker the open source platform brought the benefits of containerization technology to its users far earlier than similar Platform Engineering On Kubernetes Part 2: Cluster API |
https://dev.to/thenjdevopsguy/platform-engineering-on-kubernetes-part-2-cluster-api-4mma
|
Platform Engineering On Kubernetes Part Cluster API“Using Kubernetes to manage Kubernetes this is a fun way of thinking about Platform Engineering and Kubernetes The whole idea is it gives you the ability to literally manage Kubernetes operations like creating and updating clusters or deploying and managing applications on a Kubernetes cluster with another Kubernetes cluster wondering at this point if anyone has watched Inception When it comes to performing CRUD operations for a new Kubernetes cluster on an existing Kubernetes cluster Cluster API shines In part of the Platform Engineering On Kubernetes series you learned all about how Controllers CRD s and Operators work In part you ll learn about Cluster API along with the overlap when it comes to Operators and Cluster API PrerequisitesTo follow along with this blog post from a hands on perspective you should have the following Read the first blog post in this series as it ties in with this blog post You can find it here Why Cluster APIThere are many ideas behind why Platform Engineering exists One of the primary reasons at a high level is the ability to have an underlying platform that makes utilizing tools and configurations easier for developers and engineers Going off of that analogy let s think about a Kubernetes cluster If you aren t an infrastructure engineer or have a background as a Sysadmin creating a production grade or a production like Kubernetes cluster can be daunting Even with a Managed Kubernetes Service you still have to worry about scaling networking storage writing the code to automate the creation management of the cluster and several other factors The truth is if every engineer has to create their own clusters or deploy to those clusters which will require maintenance upgrades troubleshooting etc that means the expectation is every engineer and developer are Kubernetes experts That simply won t work especially considering one of Platform Engineering s biggest goals is to ensure proper management of responsibilities sometimes called “separation of concerns when it comes to what engineer developer is responsible for what tool platform Cluster API comes in from a Platform Engineering perspective to help with this It gives you the ability to have a more straightforward method of creating and managing clusters Cluster API BreakdownCreating any type of on prem infrastructure cloud infrastructure or cloud service isn t easy There are an absurd amount of bells and whistles on top of the various configurations that you can use third party tools and best practices When it comes to Kubernetes clusters it s no different Although there are various Managed Kubernetes Services like AKS EKS and GKE available it s still not easier to manage and create Kubernetes clusters Developers engineers and other technology professionals who aren t experts in Kubernetes don t have the easiest time getting a cluster up and running Cluster API is one method that you can use to get Kubernetes up and running in an efficient fashion After the initial configuration it s pretty much just two commands clusterctl generate cluster capi provider kubernetes version v gt capi filename yamlkubectl apply f capi filename yaml more on these commands in the upcoming hands on section The gist is that a Kubernetes Manifest gets generated based on a couple of configurations that Platform Engineers would configure for other engineers and developers to easily use and deploy Kubernetes The generated Kubernetes Manifest then gets run and just like that a Kubernetes cluster appears Using Cluster APINow that you know a bit about Cluster API let s dive into the hands on section of actually using it To use Cluster API you need a Management Cluster The Management Cluster will be the cluster that you use to create other Kubernetes clusters hence the create Kubernetes with Kubernetes Because you need to choose at least one type of cluster this section from a hands on perspective uses Azure Kubernetes Service AKS However what you ll notice as you dive into this and check out the other Providers the steps are very similar for each provider If you don t have an AKS cluster available you can create one from the Terraform code here Once you create it ensure that you run the following command to connect to it az aks get credentials n cluster name g resource group name Install Cluster APIFirst you ll need to install Cluster API There are a few methods that you can use to complete this Linuxcurl L o clusterctlsudo install o root g root m clusterctl usr local bin clusterctlMacbrew install clusterctl Create The Management ClusterOnce Cluster API is installed you ll begin configuring the metadata for the Management Cluster Setting the CLUSTER TOPOLOGY to true ensures that the feature gate for managed topologies is available export CLUSTER TOPOLOGY trueNext set the configurations for the cluster that s creating managing other Kubernetes clusters This way the Management Cluster has access to Azure export AZURE SUBSCRIPTION ID export AZURE TENANT ID export AZURE CLIENT ID export AZURE CLIENT SECRET Base encode the variables export AZURE SUBSCRIPTION ID B echo n AZURE SUBSCRIPTION ID base tr d n export AZURE TENANT ID B echo n AZURE TENANT ID base tr d n export AZURE CLIENT ID B echo n AZURE CLIENT ID base tr d n export AZURE CLIENT SECRET B echo n AZURE CLIENT SECRET base tr d n Set the configurations needed for the Azure Cluster Identity used by the AzureCluster export AZURE CLUSTER IDENTITY SECRET NAME cluster identity secret export CLUSTER IDENTITY NAME cluster identity export AZURE CLUSTER IDENTITY SECRET NAMESPACE default Create the secret in the AKS cluster kubectl create secret generic AZURE CLUSTER IDENTITY SECRET NAME from literal clientSecret AZURE CLIENT SECRET namespace AZURE CLUSTER IDENTITY SECRET NAMESPACE Initialize the Management Cluster clusterctl init infrastructure azure Generate The Cluster ConfigurationNow that the Management Cluster is initialized you can start setting up the configurations for the new Kubernetes cluster Cluster API has a few different bootstrappers available The most common used is Kubeadm Because of that Kubeadm will be used underneath the hood on the Azure Virtual Machines when creating the new cluster Set the environment variables for the clusters location machine type and resource group export AZURE LOCATION eastus export AZURE CONTROL PLANE MACHINE TYPE Standard Ds v export AZURE NODE MACHINE TYPE Standard Ds v export AZURE RESOURCE GROUP devrelasaservice Next generate the Kubernetes Manifest that will contain the configurations for the new Kubernetes cluster clusterctl generate cluster capi azure kubernetes version v gt capi azurekubeadm yamlRun the Kubernetes Manifest kubectl apply f capi azurekubeadm yamlYou should now see an output on the terminal and in the Azure portal that has the new VMs with Kubernetes on them Configure The ClusterAfter the cluster is created you ll have to set up a few configurations for the networking and the Cloud Controller First ensure that your Kubeconfig is up to date to connect to the new Kubernetes cluster clusterctl get kubeconfig capi azure gt capi azure kubeconfigNext install the Cloud Controller on the Kubernetes cluster helm install kubeconfig capi azure kubeconfig repo https raw githubusercontent com kubernetes sigs cloud provider azure master helm repo cloud provider azure generate name set infra clusterName capi azure set cloudControllerManager clusterCIDR Set up a proper Container Network Interface CNI so the new Kubernetes cluster is usable As an example you can use the Helm Chart below to deploy Calico a popular CNI helm repo add projectcalico https docs
