The best MacBooks for 2023: How to pick the best Apple laptop |
https://www.engadget.com/best-macbook-140032524.html?src=rss
|
Apple s most recent laptop arrived in June of this year with the inch MacBook Air It carries the same M chip as the latest model inch MacBook Air and roughly the same specs other than a larger screen and more speakers Of course a new M chip could arrive as early as next month but as with the advent of the M chip Apple will likely use the next gen chip in one or two new computers while still supporting the older yet still very capable M machines The biggest changes will likely be reserved for the more high end MacBooks In short those looking for a new MacBook have a lot to think about We solidified our testing and created this guide to help demystify the chips specs and everything else so you can figure out which model will work best for your needs We ll update this guide as Apple releases new laptops and we have a chance to put them through their paces As of today these are the best MacBooks for everyone from students to power users Factors to consider when buying a MacBookCompared to PCs Apple computers tend to have more streamlined specifications The company has long been known for this simplicity and the M series system on a chip condenses things even further The M and M chips combine among other technologies the CPU graphics card and unified memory RAM Apple s Neural Engine is included too which is a specialized group of processor cores that handles machine learning tasks such as image analysis and voice recognition While a unified chip means you have fewer decisions to make when picking a MacBook there are still a few factors to consider including the number of CPU cores amount of RAM storage capacity screen size and obviously price CPU coresThe M chip is offered with a single configuration an core CPU and a core GPU At the other end of the spectrum the M Max chip is built with up to a core CPU and a core GPU Cores are in essence smaller processing units that can handle different tasks simultaneously Having more of them translates to the computer being able to run multiple programs and applications at once while also smoothly processing demanding tasks like video editing and high level gaming In short more cores allow for more advanced computing But if your needs fall below professional level gaming and cinematic video and audio editing getting the highest number of cores is likely overkill ーand after all more cores equals higher cost and more power usage RAMMemory or RAM options vary depending on the chip you choose The MacBook Air with the M chip comes with either or GB of RAM With the M chip you can opt for or GB The M Pro chip includes or GB of memory while the most powerful M Max chip gives you the option of or GB You ve likely heard the analogy that compares memory to the amount of workspace available on a literal desktop surface whereas storage is the amount of drawers you have to store projects to work on later The larger the worktop surface the more projects you can work on at once The bigger the drawers the more you can save for later More RAM is ideal for people who plan to work in multiple programs at once And the more demanding each program is the more RAM will be required Extra memory can also come in handy if you re the type who likes to have infinite numbers of tabs open on your browser If your daily workflow doesn t involve simultaneously using a vast number of memory intensive programs you can save yourself money and buy the RAM configuration that you re most likely to actually use For casual users GB may be enough however if you can afford an upgrade to GB of RAM we recommend going doing so as modern browsers tend to be pretty memory hungry Investing in more RAM now will give your new MacBook a longer lifespan of reliable use It s also important to keep in mind that unlike most PCs the RAM in current model MacBooks is not user upgradable so you ll want to get what you plan on needing at the outset Devindra Hardawar EngadgetStorage capacity SSD Storage options range from GB of SSD for the M MacBook Air and TB of storage for the MacBook Pros with the M Max chip If you want to rotate between a long roster of game titles or keep lots of high res videos on hand you ll want more storage If you re mostly working with browser and cloud based applications you can get away with a smaller capacity configuration That said we recommend springing for GB of storage or more if it s within your budget You ll quickly feel the limits of a GB machine as it ages since the operating system alone takes up a good portion of your built in storage Having TB will feel even roomier and allow for more data storage over the life of your laptop When Apple announced the new iPhones the company also announced new iCloud storage storage plans with subscriptions that allow up to TB of storage You could also transfer files to an external storage device But if you don t want to pay for a monthly subscription and prefer the convenience of having immediate access to your files it s best to get the highest amount of storage space your budget allows for at the outset Screen sizeMacBooks come in and inch sizes That might not seem like a huge difference but as Engadget s Nathan Ingraham noted when he reviewed the new inch MacBook Air a bigger screen makes a surprising difference That s especially true if you plan to use your laptop as an all day productivity machine and won t be using an external monitor More space means you can more clearly view side by side windows and have a more immersive experience when watching shows or gaming But screen size is the main factor influencing weight The inch MacBook Air M weighs pounds whereas the top end inch MacBook Pro weighs pounds If you plan to travel a lot or swap your work locations regularly a smaller screen will make life easier in the long run All MacBooks feature IPS LCD panels in plane switching liquid crystal display which Apple markets as Retina displays The MacBook Air M and the inch MacBook Pro M have Retina displays A Liquid Retina display is offered with the M MacBook Air and the Liquid Retina XDR display comes with the and inch MacBook Pros Liquid refers to the way the lighted portion of the display flows within the contours of the screen filling the rounded corners and curving around the camera notch XDR is what Apple calls HDR high dynamic range Compared to most other laptops MacBook displays are notably bright sharp and lush But one feature worth pointing out is another Apple marketing term ProMotion It s the company s term to describe a screen with a higher Hz refresh rate which results in smoother scrolling and more fluid looking graphics Only the and inch MacBook Pros offer ProMotion the other models max out at Hz which is perfectly fine for everyday browsing and typical workdays But if you want buttery smooth motion from your display you ll have to shell out more money for an upgraded model PriceThe least expensive MacBook is the inch M Air with GB of RAM and GB of SSD which sells for and has been regularly going for at multiple retailers Alternatively you can spend up to for the inch MacBook Pro M Max with GB of RAM and TB of storage Chip type screen size memory and storage capacity all influence the price at checkout which is why guides like this may help you determine just what you need and what you don t so you can get the most cost effective machine for you Our guide suggests MacBook Air M for most people the MacBook Air M for students and those on a budget and the or inch MacBook Pros for professionals If you have extra money to spare once you ve picked your machine we recommend upgrading to at least GB of RAM and GB of storage to make your machine as future proof as possible Best overall MacBook Air MOur resident laptop expert Devindra Hardawar called the MacBook Air M a near perfect Mac in his review awarding it a high score of It s the newer of the two Air models Apple still sells and notably a better buy than the inch MacBook Pro as the latter is both heavier and more expensive The Air was built around the new M chip and completely refreshed for with a new squared off design that ditches the wedge shape The inch Liquid Retina screen hits up to nits making it both bigger and brighter than the previous generation The Hz refresh rate doesn t deliver the butter smooth scrolling you get on Pro models but it s lovely nonetheless The quad speaker array pumps out great sound filling a room at max volume without distortion and the three mic array does a good job of picking up your voice for video calls The p webcam is an improvement over previous generations It even beats our top Windows laptop Dell s XPS Plus which still sports a p camera but Devindra found the image the Air captures to be drab Despite being thinner than ever the M Air manages to hang on to its mm headphone jack and includes two USB C Thunderbolt ports and a MagSafe connector That means you don t have to block a potential data port while charging The battery life is ample lasting hours and minutes in our rundown test which should be more than enough for a day or two of work The M processor gives the Air enough speed to play games particularly those from Apple Arcade Streaming and cloud gaming work well through Safari and you ll find a handful of compatible titles on Steam However many of the bigger AAA releases still aren t compatible with Macs though Apple is looking to change that Our review unit performed well in benchmark tests beating the Air M and nearly matching the performance of the inch MacBook Pro M It s a fanless system which means it s quiet but to keep things cool the CPU does have to be throttled occasionally Overall it s an excellent choice for everyday use and can handle most tasks Of course if you re planning on doing intensive video editing you ll likely want something more powerful such as the MacBook Pro M but the Air is arguably the best multipurpose ultraportable laptop that Apple makes Our review MacBook Air had an M chip with a core GPU along with GB of memory and TB of storage That configuration will run you We think the processing power of the Air is plenty capable without the GPU bump and the terabyte of storage is probably overkill for most casual users Instead we recommend the setup with an core GPU GB of memory and GB of SSD storage The inch MacBook Air is certainly the best laptop for anyone that prizes portability above all else However if a slightly larger screen size is tempting to you don t sleep on the inch MacBook Air M The new laptop does everything that inch model does well while giving you a larger screen to work with in a still svelte package It doesn t side step the very Apple issue of having a little less RAM and storage than we d prefer in its base model GB GB SSD but that doesn t hold it back It s one of the best MacBooks we ve used recently and it gives fans of the Air lineup a new configuration to consider And since it s starting price is only more than that of the inch Air the jump isn t as cost prohibitive as say the inch MacBook Pro which starts at a whopping Read our full review of the inch Apple MacBook Air MBest budget option MacBook Air MThe MacBook Air M may not have the most current Apple silicon but it gets so much right that it s still an excellent laptop and probably the best MacBook for college students It earned a high score of in our review and Devindra declared it one of the fastest ultraportables you could buy at the time Of course now that the M is on the scene its numbers are comparatively less impressive but with a base price of and often on sale for less it s a relatively affordable way for students or those with tight budgets to snag an entry level machine that s both fast and capable The Air s inch Retina display looks beautiful and is ideal for binge sessions The laptop s sturdy wedge shaped unibody case weighs just pounds making it easy to take to class or work You can even fire it up in the quietest library without making a sound thanks to a heat sink and passive cooling that eliminate the need for a fan The keyboard offers a satisfying amount of depth despite its thin profile and the trackpad is smooth The performance of the M chip really makes the MacBook Air M stand out It s impressively responsive launching apps nearly instantly and running them effortlessly Safari delivers a slick browsing experience loading complex pages quickly The M chip is also behind the Air s long battery life We managed to get hours and minutes during our video rundown test which should be more than enough to get you through a full day grind Of course it s not without drawbacks The M Air houses a p webcam which isn t as sharp as the M Air s p camera and it only comes with two Thunderbolt ports and a headphone jack If you re charging your computer there s only one available plug for accessories There s no SD card slot either and since Apple hardware isn t the easiest to upgrade yourself you ll want to buy all the storage you need right out of the gate We recommend sticking with the base configuration GB RAM GB SSD if you ll mostly be using web based programs and cloud based apps For an extra you can upgrade to GB of memory which is good if you stream heavily like to have a lot of open tabs or want to run a ton of apps at once Alternatively the same amount could get you GB of storage if you want to keep a lot of files and photos locally Read our full review of the inch Apple MacBook Air MBest for creatives MacBook Pro M nbsp The and inch MacBook Pros came out in January of both using more powerful versions of the M chip the M Pro and the M Max For creatives the new machines are a blessing positioning them as the best MacBooks for video editing and music production The inch MacBook Pro with a core GPU M Pro chip can easily handle K video editing effects processing and whichever Mac compatible digital audio workstation you prefer The inch screen is a bright and vibrant MiniLED Liquid Retina XDR display with a Hz refresh rate for smooth scrolling and animations A six speaker array produces crisp punchy sound that s better than what most laptops can deliver and the built in mics are great for video calls As you d expect with a high end Pro model you get a full complement of ports including an SD card slot headphone jack HDMI port and three Thunderbolt sockets There s even a MagSafe charging port We got a respectable hours and minutes of battery life out of the inch model and according to Apple the inch model can get up to hours on a charge If you re planning on processing a lot of K video complex D scenes or more expansive music compositions you may want the better performance provided by the faster M Max chip In that case we recommend the inch MacBook Pro as its larger battery can better match the chip s higher power consumption As long as cost isn t a deciding factor the inch Pro with the M Max is the way to go It s one of the more powerful MacBooks available with a bigger screen core CPU core GPU GB of memory and TB of storage Those options will run you but should serve even the most demanding user well for years Read our full review of the Apple MacBook Pro MThis article originally appeared on Engadget at |

Honbike’s e-bike of the future is perfect for cities |
https://www.engadget.com/honbikes-e-bike-of-the-future-is-perfect-for-cities-133014272.html?src=rss
|
Editorial Note Apologies for the delay in this review earlier this year I was in a bike accident not with this bike I should add that left me with a months long concussion I am a proud townie I don t mind the odd nature walk but I m far happier striding for hours at a time through cities coffee in hand I loved walking from law school in the center of London back to my apartment six miles away through the hustle and bustle That s possibly why I feel such a kinship with Honbike s Uni It s an elegant efficient and beautifully designed city e bike of the future that is a joy to ride just so long as you never think about taking it out of its comfort zone HardwarePhoto by Daniel Cooper EngadgetI won t lean too hard into the unique design angle because plenty of bikes eschew the usual diamond frame template It s undeniably eye catching with a crossbar running from the headset head tube down to the rear wheel which then appears to bleed into the chain stay I quite like the commitment to making it look as if it s one continuous structural unit even if it is divided by a wheel The chunky crossbar gets much of its strength from the Wh worth of battery inside which promises a top range of km or miles The squared off tube ends and built in front light gives it a look and feel best described as VanMoof y The Uni costs in the US and here in the UK less than the you can pay for a half decent e bike Honbike hasn t scrimped too obviously with a Gates carbon belt drive with a quoted life of km There are Tektro Aries disc brakes on custom six spoke wheels that make it look like you re riding a sport bike The front and rear fenders are included although the instructions do tell you to put the front fender on backwards There s an integrated front light but only an aftermarket battery powered rear light bolted onto the seat It s less than ideal but the logic for why it s there is obvious With no top tube there s nowhere to install an integrated rear light that s high enough to be visible at night Photo by Daniel Cooper EngadgetIntegrated into the headset is a dot matrix display that s supremely bright and perfectly visible in bright sunshine There s a small control unit on the left hand grip where you ll turn it on run the lights and set your power level On the right a built in throttle will activate walking assist mode and give you a tiny shot of power from a standing start There are plenty of e bikes costing around two grand that often feel a little phoned in and no I won t name names But for every standout like the gorgeous Raleigh Trace there are plenty that look like their manufacturer took an old road bike added a rear wheel motor bolted a battery onto the downtube and called it a day I don t think it s unreasonable to expect the industry to up its game and the big brands are getting better in the face of better designed competition The Uni is a better looking bike than lots of those in its price bracket and I d say looks like it costs a little bit more than you ll actually pay The bike is hewn from series aluminum and weighs about kg or pounds which is a little heftier than it may look It s a two handed job to lug it about and so you probably wouldn t want to carry this up several flights of stairs on a regular basis In UsePhoto by Daniel Cooper EngadgetI often wonder to what extent we should judge a bike upon the merits the company itself sets for it versus a more general purpose view The Uni is marketed as a city bike engineered to eat up the long flat stretches of asphalt between us and our destination It s no surprise because I already tipped my hand here that it s ideally suited to that environment comfortably cruising along the road whenever and wherever I chose to go In fact judged on that merit alone if you re only ever riding this on the road or a dedicated cycle lane you can just order one right now When the electric assist is off the Uni s essentially the world s most overbuilt single speed and it works in that configuration too If you re on flat well paved roads then you should feel very comfortable that you ll get where you need to go quickly and easily It s only when we take a more general purpose view and test the Uni out of its comfort zone do you see its weaknesses Like many townies it starts to struggle the further from civilization you get even if you re well within the boundaries of a city Not far from where I live there s a path through a small wood that you can use to cut the distance between two major roads It s a well worn path and on sunny days it s a mostly flat and dry stretch that ll save you minutes or more Sadly even the gentlest of terrain will pose a problem because there s no suspension or shock absorption shaking your bones to a fine powder Afterward I took the bike to some tree lined residential avenues the sort where the roads are only relaid once every three or four decades The trees have had time and opportunity to burrow across the road and make the terrain less than smooth as a consequence Your municipality may be fine with potholes and uneven roads but take it as read that the Uni is not Photo by Daniel Cooper EngadgetYou ve noticed too I ve mentioned flat roads a few times because you re not going to get too much help up hills There are only three acceleration modes and no fine grain control beyond to help you get more power where you need it Here in Norwich there s a daily savage hill that up one side has an incline of between and degrees while its opposite hits It s so steep that it s the site of an annual endurance cycling competition and seemed an ideal place to test the Uni s gyroscopic uphill assistance Essentially the bike is meant to know the gradient you are cycling up and automatically adjust the power to suit your needs Yeah For the gentler side it s doable but you can expect far less help from the bike than you might expect The company says it ll run between nine and mph on a degree incline but only if the rider s maximum weight is kg Sadly I m a few kilos over that figure and so I really had to work for every little bit of help leaving me fairly sweaty by the time I d reached the summit For the latter however you ll struggle to go more than halfway up before the bike simply refuses to continue During my testing a pair of dudes in a panel van were hooting with sadistic glee as I tried and failed to motivate the Uni to climb any further This isn t a dealbreaker since there aren t too many really nasty hills in the center of most towns and cities But you might need to plan your route to avoid anything too extreme during your morning commute While I m piling on the bike is designed to look like a single piece of metal that curls into itself The lack of a second tube means there s less of an obvious mounting point around the frame when you need to lock it to a public rack Instead you re forced to wrap the chain around the wheel mount and then back again to try and create something that feels secure enough to leave You can also electronically lock the electric assist but that won t stop the wheels from turning leaving an enterprising thief with at least something usable Given the cost of one of these things the fact so little thought had been given about safely storing one is a bugbear Photo by Daniel Cooper EngadgetHonbike says the Wh battery will squeeze out around miles or km in range via that W motor Naturally that s in the best possible conditions with the lightest rider and the least amount of electric assist available Here in the real world you can expect that figure to fall by a fair amount and the company has tuned the motor to emphasize a smooth gentle ride over world beating power You ll pretty much find that the bike will just keep you gently cantering around at mph in all but the highest power setting You can push things to the current legal limit of mph if you want but you d rarely need that sort of power unless you re going hard in heavy traffic and need to work your legs But I found that as a heavier more power hungry rider that my range would be closer to miles on a single charge And here s a nice thing Honbike may have a perfectly fine app it s also completely inessential The built in display will give you most of all the information you d need to access including your speed and a basic battery monitor If you want and you splash out for a smartphone mount then the app can show you a local map your speed distance and trip duration At the end of each trip it ll also tell you how much carbon dioxide you ve saved by cycling if you really need the boost to your eco credentials If I have one other concern it s about how riders will be able to keep this bike running for a very long time An end user can buy replacement tyres and inner tubes brake pads pedals fenders and the front and rear lights from the company s online store While brake cables that are run through the frame are an annoyance it s a common issue on high end bikes and most repair stores can handle it with little bother But for the other key parts including the wheels the motor and the battery it appears that Honbike recommends you send it in to its service center I don t necessarily blame the company for getting nervous about user repairs to power units since the risk is fairly significant nbsp Wrap UpPhoto by Daniel Cooper EngadgetIt s worth saying that more of this piece has been focusing on the Honbike s flaws rather than its strengths Which is a bit of an irony really since riding around on this thing has been pretty much a joy from start to finish It s just that it s very much designed to be the apex predator in a single environment and so you need to be aware of that before you buy But if what you want and what you need is a bike that ll get you from one end of the city to another in an elegant and painless manner then there s plenty of reasons to buy one Especially when you look at other bikes in this sub two grand bracket and realize that as limited as it may be it s also a real looker This article originally appeared on Engadget at |
