Foreign governments likely spy on your smart phone usage and now Senator Ron Wyden s office is pushing for Apple and Google to reveal how exactly it works Push notifications the dings you get from apps calling your attention back to your phone may be handed over from a company to government services if asked But it appears the Department of Justice won t let companies come clean about the practice nbsp Push notifications don t actually come straight from the app Instead they pass through the smart phone provider like Apple for iPhones or Google for Androids to deliver the notifications to your screen This has created murky room for government surveillance quot Because Apple and Google deliver push notification data they can be secretly compelled by governments to hand over this information quot Wyden wrote in the letter on Wednesday Apple claims it was suppressed from coming clean about this process which is why Wyden s letter specifically targets the Department of Justice quot In this case the federal government prohibited us from sharing any information and now that this method has become public we are updating our transparency reporting to detail these kinds of request Apple said in a statement to Engadget Apple s next transparency report will include requests for push notification tokens according to the company Specifically Wyden asks the DOJ to let Apple and Google tell customers and the general public about the demand for these app notification records Google did not respond to a request for comment by the time of publication It s even more complicated because apps can t do much about it Even if there s an individual pledge for security if an app delivers push notifications it must use the Apple or Google system to do so In theory this means your private messaging could be shared with a foreign government if you re getting push notifications from the app That includes any metadata about the notification too like account information The revelation about push notifications come at a time when privacy and security have become a selling point Companies advertise how they ll keep your information safe but as more loopholes come to light it s becoming harder to suss out what s actually trustworthy nbsp This article originally appeared on Engadget at |

After a slow month in the world of video game marketing things are starting to pick up The past week has given us a first look at the new Fallout TV show a few release dates and a trailer for a little game called Grand Theft Auto VI ー and the Game Awards are still to come What good timing for us to launch a weekly video game show to dig into the news This week s storiesThe Game AwardsThe Game AwardsThe Game Awards will go live on Thursday December at PM ET Expect a few hours of game announcements new trailers awkward interviews and musical performances including one by the fictional band from Alan Wake Amazon MGM StudiosFallout but on TV Amazon dropped the first trailer for its live action Fallout series ーand man it sure does look like Fallout The show is set in Los Angeles years after the nuclear apocalypse and it stars Yellowjackets actor Ella Purnell plus Walton Goggins Aaron Moten and Kyle MacLachlan It s heading to Prime Video on April GTA VI is coming in The biggest news item this week pre The Game Awards was the first official trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI As of writing it s already reached million views on YouTube ーa pace usually reserved for only the finest K Pop videos GTA VI is set in Vice City it s coming out in and I m sure we ll hear a lot more about it before then NexonWhat is an indie game The meat of this week s episode focuses on the longstanding debate about what indie actually means One of the titles nominated for Best Independent Game at the Game Awards Dave the Diver was commissioned and bankrolled by Nexon one of the largest video game studios in South Korea It s not indie and its inclusion in this category highlights how little consensus there still is around the definition This is kinda my area of expertise ーit s my th year as a video game journalist and indie games have always been a core feature of my reporting I ve spent a lot of time thinking about what I mean when I say indie so I sat down and formalized this thought process There are three questions that can help define a game in an indie gray area Is the team on the mainstream system s payroll Is the game or team owned by a platform holder Do the artists have creative control I dug into these questions this week and discuss how having a publisher isn t related to the indie label at all But when all else fails in the indie debate there s one ultimate question to ask Can this team exist without my support This is why the distinction matters The indie label helps to identify the artists that would not exist without game sales crowdfunding or word of mouth support from players It exists to determine the teams that are truly living and dying on game sales and it helps players decide where to spend their money If Dave the Diver didn t sell well its team would likely have the chance to try again If say Pizza Tower didn t sell well its studio could have folded I think this is an important conversation so give that story a read and let us know in the comments if you think my questions help or just make things more confusing It s probably a little bit of both Now playingI ve been thoroughly enjoying The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood on Steam Deck ーit s the latest game from Deconstructeam the indie studio that made The Red Strings Club and Gods Will Be Watching The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood is a game about building tarot decks manipulating elections betraying a coven of witches and seducing everyone it s sexy and well written and I highly recommend it Another game I m looking forward to is A Highland Song from indie studio Inkle it just came out this week and I m excited to dive in Let us know in the comments what you re playing Also we still don t know what to call this weekly video game news show so leave us some name suggestions too Thanks This article originally appeared on Engadget at |

strong online passwords Your login credentials are not secure if they re all written down on a sticky note near your computer and if you lose that physical record you ll have a hard time logging into your most used accounts Password managers with their various apps and plugins not only keep your information secure but also remove the guesswork around remembering credentials and make it easier to log in from almost anywhere But while having something is better than nothing not every password manager stacks up the same We tested out nine of the best password managers available now to help you choose the right one for your needs How do password managers work Think of password managers like virtual safe deposit boxes They hold your valuables in this case usually online credentials in a section of the vault only accessible to you by security key or a master password Most of these services have autofill features that make it convenient to log in to any site without needing to remember every password you have and they keep your credit card information close for impulse purchases But given that passwords are one of the top ways to keep your online identity secure the real value of password managers is staying safe online It s just not possible without a password manager to have unique long and hard to guess passwords Florian Schaub an associate professor of information and of electrical engineering and computer science at the University of Michigan said Common guidance states that secure passwords should be unique with the longest number of characters allowed and uppercase letters lowercase letters numbers and special characters This is the exact opposite of using one password everywhere with minor variations depending on a site s requirements Think of how many online accounts and sites you have credentials for ーit s an impossible task to remember it all without somewhere to store passwords safely no a sticky note on your desk won t cut it Password managers are more readily accessible and offer the benefit of filling in those long passwords for you Are password managers safe It seems counterintuitive to store all your sensitive information in one place One hack could mean you lose it all to an attacker and struggle for months or even years to rebuild your online presence not to mention you may have to cancel credit cards and other accounts But most experts in the field agree that password managers are a generally secure and safe way to keep track of your personal data and the benefits of strong complex passwords outweigh the possible risks The mechanics of keeping those passwords safe differs slightly from provider to provider Generally you have a lengthy complex master password that safeguards the rest of your information In some cases you might also get a security key to enter when you log in to new devices This is a random string of letters numbers and symbols that the company will send you at sign up Only you know this key and because it s stored locally on your device or printed out on paper it s harder for hackers to find These multiple layers of security make it difficult for an attacker to get into your vault even if your password manager provider experiences a breach But the company should also follow a few security basics A zero knowledge policy means that the company keeps none of your data on file so in the event of an attack there s nothing for hackers to find Regular health reports like pentests and security audits are essential for keeping companies up to par on best practices and other efforts like bug bounty programs or hosting on an open source website encourage constant vigilance for security flaws Most password managers now also offer some level of encryption falling under the Advanced Encryption Standard AES AES bit is the strongest because there are the most number of possible combinations but AES bit or bit are still good Who are password managers for Given their universal benefit pretty much everyone could use a password manager They re not just for the tech savvy people or businesses anymore because so much sensitive information ends up online behind passwords from our bank accounts to our Netflix watch history That s the other perk of password managers safe password sharing Families friends or roommates can use them to safely access joint accounts Texting a password to someone isn t secure and you can help your family break the habit by starting to use one yourself Lisa Plaggemier executive director at National Cyber Security Alliance said Streaming is the obvious use case but consider the shared bills file storage and other sites you share access with the people around you as well Are password managers worth it You likely already use a password the nine contenders on iPhone Android Safari Chrome and Firefox That helped us better understand what platforms each manager was available on and see how support differs across operating systems and browsers As we got set up with each we took note of ease of use and how they iterated on the basic features of autofill and password generators Nearly all password managers have these features but some place limits on how much you can store while others give more control over creating easy to type yet complex passwords From there we looked at extra features like data breach monitoring to understand which managers offered the most for your money Finally we reviewed publicly available information about security specs for each This includes LastPass which more experts are shying away from recommending after the recent breach For the sake of this review we ve decided not to recommend LastPass at this time as fallout from the breach still comes to light The company disclosed a second incident earlier this year where an unauthorized attack accessed the company s cloud storage including sensitive data Since then hackers have stolen more than million in cryptocurrency using private keys and other information stored in LastPass vaults These are the password managers we tested PasswordLastPassBitwardenDashlaneKeeperNordPassEnpassNorton password managerLogMeOnceBest password manager PasswordMany security experts trust Password with their private information and after testing it out it s clear why The service includes industry standard encryption a secret key that only you know on top of your master password a zero knowledge policy that means it keeps no data and other security features like frequent audits two factor authentication and a bug bounty program That said Password did fall victim to a recent cybersecurity incident that s worth noting Password detected suspicious activity on its Okta instance but an investigation concluded that no Password user data was accessed Password now also supports passkeys which are credentials stored in your most used devices that are protected by biometric authentication like fingerprints or facial recognition or PINs Password has a pretty intuitive user interface across its mobile and desktop apps A tutorial at download helps you import passwords from other managers onto Password so that you don t feel like you re starting over from scratch It also clearly rates the strength of each password and has an open and fill option in the vault so that you can get into your desired site even more quickly We also liked the user friendly option to scan a set up code to easily connect your account to your mobile devices without too much tedious typing At per month the individual subscription comes with unlimited passwords items and one gigabyte of document storage for your vault It also lets you share passwords credit card information and other saved credentials If you upgrade to the family plan for each month you ll get to invite up to five people plus more for each per month to be a part of the vault Best free password manager BitwardenBitwarden s free plan includes unlimited passwords on an unlimited number of devices which is more than we ve seen from some of its competitors There are drawbacks like you can only share vault items with one other user but we think that s a fair tradeoff Bitwarden is based on open source code meaning anyone on GitHub can audit it which is a good measure of security On a personal level it includes security audits of your information like a data breach report that can keep you in the know about when your passwords have been leaked and when it s time to change them Plus it s widely available across the platforms we tested including Windows and iOS with a level of customization options to access your password vault and more It also recently added passkeys to its vault and two factor authentication options as a secure way to sign in Bitwarden may be the best free password manager but it does have a paid version and we do think it s worth it At annually for individuals or for families you unlock encrypted file storage emergency access unlimited sharing and more additional features But the free version comes with the basics that can get anyone set up on password management easily Best password manager for cross platform availability NordPassAcross password managers we tested cross platform availability was relatively similar Most are widely available across web browsers and different operating systems including our other top picks on this list But we wanted to give a nod to NordPass here because of how easy the service makes it to access your vault from any platform while keeping your data safe NordPass even lets you use biometric data to sign in now like your fingerprints or face making it even easier to get into accounts across devices NordPass has a free option with unlimited passwords and syncs across devices A per month premium plan keeps you logged in when switching devices comes with security notifications and allows for item sharing A family subscription comes with six premium accounts and only costs per month This makes it an excellent budget option as well Besides the pairing code to connect accounts NordPass is a pretty standard password manager Scanning a code gets me from my laptop to mobile device to work computer super easily If you re constantly switching devices and those extra few seconds save your sanity it s worth considering Best password manager for shared access DashlaneDashlane has four subscription options A free user gets access to a single device with unlimited passwords an advanced user pays per month to get upgraded to unlimited devices and dark web monitoring for per month a premium user also gets VPN access and an per month family plan includes access for up to subscribers It met all the criteria we looked for but with a clear emphasis on sharing credentials Dashlane highlights secure sharing starting at its free level which is a functionality that some competitors keep behind a paywall Other free features however recently took a hit Dashlane limited the number of passwords users of the free version could store Access for up to members in a family plan is one of the bigger plans we ve seen as well While we were testing it password sharing seemed front of mind with a tab dedicated to it in Dashlane s browser extension Arguably the biggest caveat here though is lack of Linux support FAQsWhy use a password manager Using a password manager can enhance your online security They store all of your complex passwords and autofill them as needed so that you can have unique strong passwords across the web without remembering each of them yourself In many cases unique passwords are your first defense against attack and a reliable manager makes it easier to keep track of them all How secure are password managers Password managers are a secure way to store your credentials Experts in the field generally agree that the benefits of accessibility when storing complex passwords outweigh the possibility of attack like what happened with LastPass But Disney Bundle subscribers in the US should now be seeing some more general entertainment fare popping up on Disney The long awaited integration of Hulu into the company s namesake streaming platform is underway Disney has added a Hulu tab to the platform for those with a bundle subscription The company is calling this a limited beta of Hulu on Disney ahead of a broader rollout in the spring The Hulu tab appears alongside those for Disney Pixar Marvel Star Wars and National Geographic on the Disney homepage Clicking or tapping on the tab will take you to a Hulu Hub which features thousands of movies and shows including episodes that aired on TV the day before The idea is to make it easier for subscribers to access everything they might want to watch from within the same app According to Disney by rolling out the Hulu tab in beta to begin with subscribers will have time to set up parental controls and family profiles if they haven t already done so That should help them stop kids from watching movies and shows that perhaps aren t age appropriate It s worth noting that the integration won t spell the end for Hulu which Disney will soon take full ownership of as a separate app You ll still need that to access the Hulu Live TV and Premium add ons for instance Additionally you ll have to go to the Hulu app for the service s full on demand library nbsp It seems that nothing much will change for folks in other countries as things stand Disney subscribers in many territories already have access to Hulu originals as well as titles from the ABC Disney and th Century back catalog through the Star tab This article originally appeared on Engadget at |

Fortnite aims at the survival-builder crown with its new Lego mode |

Remember when Fortnite was just a battle royale game After six years of storylines concerts and even Olympic events Fortnite has grown beyond its roots into a general catch all social space And Epic Games isn t going back expanding the Fortnite experience even further with three new modes announced at its Big Bang Event this weekend a racing game a social music experience and most importantly to kids a Lego themed survival builder that launches today If Lego themed survival builder sounds suspiciously like Minecraft to you you re not wrong Minecraft itself has been burdened with comparisons to Lego since its release over a decade ago this is just the Lego company returning the favor There s a survival mode where your little Lego minifig explores a verdant landscape punching trees and rocks to gather supplies for building There are skeletons that wander around at night and will attack if they spot you Various animals wander around that can provide resources If you pet a chicken it will produce an egg though I accidentally punched it first and got nothing as every other chicken proceeded to avoid me for the rest of the day Once you get into it though the comparisons fall away The procedurally generated landscape is realistically rendered thanks to the power of Epic s Unreal Engine with natural looking trees covered in individual leaves and blades of grass that blow in the wind Punching or chopping natural features is what turns them into Lego elements It s weird almost like you re colonizing the real world by turning it into a Lego one It s also huge about times the size of the battle royale island Once you ve obtained the materials building is rather simple There s a list of building plans and your character adorably holds a Lego tile with blueprints on it while you re in the construction mode Players get a handful of essential recipes to start like a campfire to keep warm and a shack for shelter and they can earn more as they play and level up The game will helpfully sketch a ghostly outline of where each component goes asking the player to slide and lock it into place There s no place for error or major creativity in the basic survival mode ーthat s what the sandbox is for There all of the building plans will already be unlocked leaving players free to let their imaginations go wild There s plenty here for Lego devotees as Epic has scanned around different Lego elements for use in the game All of your favorite pieces should be present and the company plans to add more in the coming months there are over unique Lego elements total As this is an official collaboration with the company many of the graphical assets were received directly from Lego and only legal builds will be allowed as opposed to illegal builds which refer to Lego configurations that in the real world may stress or break pieces Hardcore Lego aficionados will definitely appreciate the attention to detail Epic GamesAnd Epic would certainly like to see more Lego fans playing Fortnite especially kids Though it started life as a violence oriented game the title has evolved into a gathering space where kids sign on just to socialize with friends The Lego feature along with the two other modes Epic announced over the weekend ーFortnite Festival and Rocket Racing ーare Epic s way of facilitating that by providing activities that are more than just running around and shooting By eschewing the violent elements as well as controversial practices like loot boxes Epic also hopes to make Fortnite more palatable to parents Lego Fortnite similarly to Minecraft lets you customize the challenges you ll face in your world You can toggle gameplay basics like enemies hunger temperate damage stamina and so on along with some more advanced features The mode supports up to eight players in a party and you can delegate seven of your friends as quot key holders quot to your world allowing them to access and edit it when you re not around Each player can have eight worlds saved to their profile nbsp As for existing Fortnite players they re free to continue playing as they always have and completely ignore the new modes the only difference they ll see is that the main menu has been expanded a bit to accommodate the new options But if they do decide to try out the Lego mode they ll find plenty that s familiar as over skin options have already been translated into minifigs and there are emotes for your character to perform Players will still earn XP which will go into their overall stats as opposed to remaining walled within the Lego mode Cosmetic elements can be used between modes as well and when you tab between options in the in game locker it will tell you what modes each skin is compatible with As this is Fortnite all of the new modes will be free to play including the Lego survival builder Epic hopes this will bring new players in though it remains to be seen whether it can draw significant market share from Minecraft Existing players will see Cloud storage app Proton Drive is rolling out a new tool that automatically sends photos to a private cloud server bringing the feature set closer to something like Google Drive Not only does the software automatically sync and upload photos to its servers but there s a management tool that categorizes images based on when the photos were taken which Proton calls snapshots of your life All of these features are reserved for Android users All you have to do is download the update and enable photo uploads in the settings Like all aspects of Proton Drive the transfer will be end to end encrypted so you don t have to worry about prying digital eyes The encryption applies to the photo itself and any associated metadata As for revisiting the photos the app lays them all out in a grid view with preview options in a variety of file types including panoramas portraits and even timelapse videos It s worth noting that Proton Drive already offered cloud storage for photos but there wasn t an automatic sync Now there is Android users rejoice though the company has yet to announce an iOS version The update begins showing up today but it ll be a few days before everyone gets it You know the drill A GB Proton Drive subscription costs per month while a GB plan costs each month There s a free tier but it s only GB Proton has been busy this year The company released a native Windows file syncing app back in July and its very own password manager in April It s well regarded in the worlds of online encryption and security There s a reason after all why Proton VPN is our top choice virtual private network This article originally appeared on Engadget at |

When Snapchat introduced the notion of ephemeral data to the masses a decade ago self destructive messaging really took off There were tons of companies trying to cash in from Meta created Poke to Wickr Confide Hash and others For the most part all of those companies failed but the idea has thrived To that end WhatsApp just introduced voice messages that automatically delete after being played The messaging app s View Once feature already exists for photos and messages but this is the first time it has been applied to voice messages The interface is simple Just select View Once and make a voice message It ll self destruct after the recipient hears it This is not only fun in a Mission Impossible sort of way but actively enhances privacy in the case of audio recordings that mention sensitive topics Hey once in a while you have to give someone credit card details and it s better to be safe than sorry There are some caveats as no technology is foolproof WhatsApp encourages users to only send View Once voice messages to people they trust as there are ways to get around the ephemeral nature of the data For instance Android users can use the screen record function as they listen and anyone can use another camera or external microphone to capture the message The tool s rolling out globally over the next few days so it might be a bit before the update hits your box WhatsApp has been making all sorts of improvements throughout the past year Just last week the platform introduced the ability to share photos in their original format without compression The app also recently added a tool that masks your IP address when making calls This article originally appeared on Engadget at |
