We now do more computing where there s cleaner energyAt Google we care about the energy use of our data centers In fact we were the first major company to be carbon neutral way back in and we ve been matching of our annual electricity use with renewable energy purchases since But we want to go even further By we plan to completely decarbonize our electricity use for every hour of every day One way we can do this is by adjusting our operations in real time so that we get the most out of the clean energy that s already available And that s exactly what our newest milestone in carbon intelligent computing does Google can now shift moveable compute tasks between different data centers based on regional hourly carbon free energy availability This includes both variable sources of energy such as solar and wind as well as “always on carbon free energy such as our recently announced geothermal project This moves us closer to our goal of operating on carbon free energy everywhere at all times by Shifting compute tasks across location is a logical progression of our first step in carbon aware computing which was to shift compute across time By enabling our data centers to shift flexible tasks to different times of the day we were able to use more electricity when carbon free energy sources like solar and wind are plentiful Now with our newest update we re also able to shift more electricity use to where carbon free energy is available The amount of computing going on at any given data center varies across the world increasing or decreasing throughout the day Our carbon intelligent platform uses day ahead predictions of how heavily a given grid will be relying on carbon intensive energy in order to shift computing across the globe favoring regions where there s more carbon free electricity The new platform does all this while still getting everything that needs to get done done ーmeaning you can keep on streaming YouTube videos uploading Photos finding directions or whatever else We re applying this first to our media processing efforts which encodes analyzes and processes millions of multimedia files like videos uploaded to YouTube Photos and Drive Like many computing jobs at Google these can technically run in many places of course limitations like privacy laws apply Now Google s global carbon intelligent computing platform will increasingly reserve and use hourly compute capacity on the most clean grids available worldwide for these compute jobs ーmeaning it moves as much energy consumption as possible to times and places where energy is cleaner minimizing carbon intensive energy consumption Google Cloud s developers and customers can also prioritize cleaner grids and maximize the proportion of carbon free energy that powers their apps by choosing regions with better carbon free energy CFE scores To learn more tune in to the livestream of our carbon aware computing workshop on June at a m PT And for more information on our journey towards carbon free energy by read CEO Sundar Pichai s latest blog post Related ArticleOur data centers now work harder when the sun shines and wind blowsToday we re announcing a carbon intelligent computing platform which can shift tasks to hours of the day when energy from cleaner power Read Article |

Project Starline Feel like you x re there togetherPeople love being together ーto share collaborate and connect And this past year with limited travel and increased remote work being together has never felt more important Through the years we ve built products to help people feel more connected We ve simplified email with Gmail and made it easier to share what matters with Google Photos and be more productive with Google Meet But while there have been advances in these and other communications tools over the years they re all a far cry from actually sitting down and talking face to face We looked at this as an important and unsolved problem We asked ourselves could we use technology to create the feeling of being together with someone just like they re actually there To solve this challenge we ve been working for a few years on Project Starline ーa technology project that combines advances in hardware and software to enable friends families and coworkers to feel together even when they re cities or countries apart Imagine looking through a sort of magic window and through that window you see another person life size and in three dimensions You can talk naturally gesture and make eye contact A woman communicates with her sister and baby using Project Starline We brought in people to reconnect using Project Starline A woman communicates with her friend using Project Starline We brought in people to reconnect using Project Starline A woman and a man communicate using sign language using Project Starline We brought in people to reconnect using Project Starline A woman communicates with her friend using Project Starline We brought in people to reconnect using Project Starline To make this experience possible we are applying research in computer vision machine learning spatial audio and real time compression We ve also developed a breakthrough light field display system that creates a sense of volume and depth that can be experienced without the need for additional glasses or headsets The effect is the feeling of a person sitting just across from you like they are right there Key breakthroughs include D imaging real time compression and a D display One of the things we are most proud of is that as soon as you sit down and start talking the technology fades into the background and you can focus on what s most important the person in front of you Project Starline is currently available in just a few of our offices and it relies on custom built hardware and highly specialized equipment We believe this is where person to person communication technology can and should go and in time our goal is to make this technology more affordable and accessible including bringing some of these technical advancements into our suite of communication products Project Starline being used in one of our Google offices To start that journey we ve spent thousands of hours testing Project Starline within Google as we connected colleagues between the Bay Area New York and Seattle We ve also been conducting demos with select enterprise partners in areas like healthcare and media to get early feedback on the technology and its applications We re planning trial deployments with enterprise partners later this year We re really excited about the progress we re making with Project Starline and the technology s potential to solve the important problem of wanting to be together with someone even when you physically can t We look forward to sharing more later this year |

Using AI to help find answers to common skin conditions |

Using AI to help find answers to common skin conditionsArtificial intelligence AI has the potential to help clinicians care for patients and treat disease ーfrom improving the screening process for breast cancer to helping detect tuberculosis more efficiently When we combine these advances in AI with other technologies like smartphone cameras we can unlock new ways for people to stay better informed about their health too Today at I O we shared a preview of an AI powered dermatology assist tool that helps you understand what s going on with issues related to your body s largest organ your skin hair and nails Using many of the same techniques that detect diabetic eye disease or lung cancer in CT scans this tool gets you closer to identifying dermatologic issues ーlike a rash on your arm that s bugging you ーusing your phone s camera How our AI powered dermatology tool works Each year we see almost ten billion Google Searches related to skin nail and hair issues Two billion people worldwide suffer from dermatologic issues but there s a global shortage of specialists While many people s first step involves going to a Google Search bar it can be difficult to describe what you re seeing on your skin through words alone Our AI powered dermatology assist tool is a web based application that we hope to launch as a pilot later this year to make it easier to figure out what might be going on with your skin Once you launch the tool simply use your phone s camera to take three images of the skin hair or nail concern from different angles You ll then be asked questions about your skin type how long you ve had the issue and other symptoms that help the tool narrow down the possibilities The AI model analyzes this information and draws from its knowledge of conditions to give you a list of possible matching conditions that you can then research further For each matching condition the tool will show dermatologist reviewed information and answers to commonly asked questions along with similar matching images from the web The tool is not intended to provide a diagnosis nor be a substitute for medical advice as many conditions require clinician review in person examination or additional testing like a biopsy Rather we hope it gives you access to authoritative information so you can make a more informed decision about your next step Based on the photos and information you provide our AI powered dermatology assist tool will offer suggested conditions This product has been CE marked as a Class I medical device in the EU It is not available in the United States Developing an AI model that assesses issues for all skin types Our tool is the culmination of over three years of machine learning research and product development To date we ve published several peer reviewed papers that validate our AI model and more are in the works Our landmark study featured in Nature Medicine debuted our deep learning approach to assessing skin diseases and showed that our AI system can achieve accuracy that is on par with U S board certified dermatologists Our most recent paper in JAMA Network Open demonstrated how non specialist doctors can use AI based tools to improve their ability to interpret skin conditions To make sure we re building for everyone our model accounts for factors like age sex race and skin types ーfrom pale skin that does not tan to brown skin that rarely burns We developed and fine tuned our model with de identified data encompassing around images and case data of diagnosed skin conditions millions of curated skin concern images and thousands of examples of healthy skin ーall across different demographics Recently the AI model that powers our tool successfully passed clinical validation and the tool has been CE marked as a Class I medical device in the EU ¹In the coming months we plan to build on this work so more people can use this tool to answer questions about common skin issues If you re interested in this tool sign up here to be notified subject to availability in your region ¹This tool has not been evaluated by the U S FDA for safety or efficacy It is not available in the United States |

Tackling tuberculosis screening with AI |

Tackling tuberculosis screening with AIToday we re sharing new AI research that aims to improve screening for one of the top causes of death worldwide tuberculosis TB TB infects million people per year and disproportionately affects people in low to middle income countries Diagnosing TB early is difficult because its symptoms can mimic those of common respiratory diseases Cost effective screening specifically chest X rays has been identified as one way to improve the screening process However experts aren t always available to interpret results That s why the World Health Organization WHO recently recommended the use of computer aided detection CAD for screening and triaging To help catch the disease early and work toward eventually eradicating it Google researchers developed an AI based tool that builds on our existing work in medical imaging to identify potential TB patients for follow up testing A deep learning system to detect active pulmonary tuberculosis In a new study released this week we found that the right deep learning system can be used to accurately identify patients who are likely to have active TB based on their chest X ray By using this screening tool as a preliminary step before ordering a more expensive diagnostic test our study showed that effective AI powered screening could save up to of the cost per positive TB case detected Our AI based tool was able to accurately detect active pulmonary TB cases with false negative and false positive detection rates that were similar to radiologists This accuracy was maintained even when examining patients who were HIV positive a population that is at higher risk of developing TB and is challenging to screen because their chest X rays may differ from typical TB cases To make sure the model worked for patients from a wide range of races and ethnicities we used de identified data from nine countries to train the model and tested it on cases from five countries These findings build on our previousresearch that showed AI can detect common issues like collapsed lungs nodules or fractures in chest X rays Applying these findings in the real worldThe AI system produces a number between and that indicates the risk of TB For the system to be useful in a real world setting there needs to be agreement about what risk level indicates that patients should be recommended for additional testing Calibrating this threshold can be time consuming and expensive because administrators can only come to this number after running the system on hundreds of patients testing these patients and analyzing the results Based on the performance of our model our research suggests that any clinic could start from this default threshold and be confident that the model will perform similarly to radiologists making it easier to deploy this technology From there clinics can adjust the threshold based on local needs and resources For example regions with fewer resources may use a higher cut off point to reduce the number of follow up tests needed The path to eradicating tuberculosisThe WHO s “The End TB Strategy lays out the global efforts that are underway to dramatically reduce the incidence of tuberculosis in the coming decade Because TB can remain pervasive in communities even if a relatively low number of people have it at a given time more and earlier screenings are critical to reducing its prevalence We ll keep contributing to these efforts ーespecially when it comes to research and development Later this year we plan to expand this work through two separate research studies with our partners Apollo Hospitals in India and the Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia CIDRZ |

Android 12 Beta: Designed for you |
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/blogspot/MKuf/~3/7vHLHjAwSSM/
|
Android Beta Designed for youFrom the beginning Android has always been about personalization and allowing you to select the device service and experience that s right for you By providing an open ecosystem that gives you choice Android has grown to more than billion active devices around the world Android builds on everything you love about Android and focuses on building a deeply personal phone that adapts to you developing an operating system that is secure by default and private by design and making all your devices work better together Today we re releasing the first beta of Android and giving you a look into some of the features that will be available in future releases A more personal experienceAndroid includes the biggest design change in Android s history We rethought the entire experience from the colors to the shapes light and motion The result is that Android is more expressive dynamic and personal than ever before PersonalizationStarting with Android on Pixel devices you ll be able to completely personalize your phone with a custom color palette and redesigned widgets Using what we call color extraction you choose your wallpaper and the system automatically determines which colors are dominant which ones are complementary and which ones just look great It then applies those colors across the entire OS the notification shade the lock screen the volume controls new widgets and much more This work is being done in deep collaboration between our software hardware and Material Design teams We re unifying our software and hardware ecosystems under a single design language called Material You Fluid motion and animationsFrom the moment you pick up an Android device you ll feel how it comes alive with every tap swipe and scroll Your phone quickly responds to your touch with smooth motion and animations For example when you dismiss your notifications on the lock screen your clock will appear larger so you know when you re all caught up We ve also simplified interactions and recrafted the entire underlying system to make your experience more fluid and efficient Your Android devices are now faster and more responsive with better power efficiency so you can use your device for longer without a charge This was achieved by some under the hood improvements including reducing the CPU time needed for core system services by up to and reducing the use of big cores by the system server by up to Redesigned system spacesSome of the most important spaces on your phone ーlike your notification shade quick settings and even the power button ーhave been purposefully reimagined to help you get things done The notification shade is more intuitive and playful with a crisp at a glance view of your app notifications whatever you re currently listening to or watching and Quick Settings that let you control practically the entire operating system with a swipe and a tap The Quick Settings space doesn t just look and feel different It s been rebuilt to include Google Pay and Home Controls while still allowing for customization so you can have everything you need most in one easy to access place To make sure you always have help from Google at your fingertips you can now long press the power button to invoke Assistant to make a phone call open apps ask questions or read aloud text heavy articles Private and secure by designAndroid includes new features that give you more transparency around which apps are accessing your data and more controls so you can make informed choices about how much private information your apps can access The new Privacy Dashboard offers a single view into your permissions settings as well as what data is being accessed how often and by which apps It also lets you easily revoke app permissions right from the dashboard We ve added a new indicator to the top right of your status bar so you know when your apps are accessing your microphone or camera And if you want to remove app access to these sensors for the entire system we ve added two new toggles in Quick Settings We re also giving you more control over how much information you share with apps With new approximate location permissions apps can be limited to seeing just your approximate location instead of a precise one For example weather apps don t need your precise location to offer an accurate forecast Beyond these new privacy features in Android we re also building privacy protections directly into the OS There are more opportunities than ever to use AI to create helpful new features but these features need to be paired with powerful privacy That s why in this release we re introducing Android Private Compute Core It allows us to introduce new technologies that are private by design allowing us to keep your personal information safe private and local to your phone Private Compute Core enables features like Live Caption Now Playing and Smart Reply All the audio and language processing happens on device isolated from the network to preserve your privacy Like the rest of Android the protections in Private Compute Core are open source and fully inspectable and verifiable by the security community There are more features coming later this year and we ll continue to push the boundaries and find ways to maintain the highest standards of privacy security and safety Try these features and moreAndroid is packed with other useful experiences like improved accessibility features for people with impaired vision scrolling screenshots conversation widgets that bring your favorite people to the home screen and ways for all your devices to work better together We re also delivering on our promise to make third party app stores easier to use on Android You can find many of these features today in Android Beta available on Pixel and other devices |

Your photos your memories your wayWe capture photos and videos so we can look back and remember But having all your photos ーof loved ones screenshots selfies ーmixed together makes it hard to rediscover important moments In fact most of the trillion photos stored in Google Photos are never viewed To make it easier to look back we re using AI to power new features that resurface meaningful moments and bring your memories to life ーwhile giving you control over what you relive New types of memories personalized to youWith Memories you can already look back on important photos from years past recent highlights moments with your loved ones your favorite activities and more Using machine learning we can now go beyond resurfacing photos based on themes to doing so based on not so obvious visual patterns in your photos Starting later this summer when we find a set of three or more photos that share things like shape or color we ll highlight these little patterns for you in your Memories For example one of our engineers received this collection featuring photos he snapped of his favorite orange backpack On their own these photos may not be the most meaningful but when you see them all together they tell a story ーyour story As always they re private and only visible to you Later this year you ll also see new types of Memories of the moments you celebrate whether that s Diwali Lunar New Year Hanukkah ーwhich my family celebrates ーor something else These Memories will show up as you scroll through your photo grid along with new Best of Month Memories and Trip highlights which are starting to roll out today Bringing your photos to lifeLast December we launched Cinematic photos which use machine learning to create vivid D versions of your photos Taking this a step further we re using computational photography to really bring these memories to life When you re trying to get the perfect photo you usually take the same shot two or three times ーtrying to get all my kids smiling and looking at the camera at the same time is a challenge to say the least Using neural networks to synthesize the movement between two nearly identical photos and fill in the gaps with new frames we can create vivid moving images called Cinematic moments Best of all Cinematic moments can be created with any pair of nearly identical images ーwhether they were captured on the latest smartphone or scanned from an old photo album Creating this effect from scratch would take professional animators hours but with machine learning we can automatically create these moments and bring them to your Recent Highlights Control what Memories you want to seeNot all memories are worth revisiting Whether it s a breakup a loss or some other tough time we don t want to relive everything We specifically heard from the transgender community that resurfacing certain photos is painful so we ve been working with our partners at GLAAD and listening to feedback to make reminiscing more inclusive Google Photos already includes controls to hide photos of certain people or time periods and we re continuing to add new ones to improve the experience as a result of this continued partnership Later this summer we re making these controls easier to find so you can choose what you look back on in just a few taps We re also adding more granular controls for Memories in your grid ーstarting today you ll be able to rename a Trip highlight or remove it completely And coming soon you ll be able to remove a single photo from a Memory remove Best of Month Memories and rename or remove Memories based on the moments you celebrate We re also introducing Locked Folder ーa passcode protected space where you can save photos separately so they won t show up as you scroll through Google Photos or any other apps on your device Locked Folder will be available first on Google Pixel and arrive on more Android devices throughout the year And on Pixel you ll even have the option to save photos and videos directly to your Locked Folder right from the camera With Google Photos AI powered features help you look back and enjoy your memories by bringing them to life in new ways ーand you can do it all on your own terms Looking back is important and incredibly personal Relive the moments you want to how you want to with Google Photos |

Search, explore and shop the world’s information, powered by AI |
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/blogspot/MKuf/~3/cWlYKAl9-Ds/
|
Search explore and shop the world s information powered by AIAI advancements push the boundaries of what Google products can do Nowhere is this clearer than at the core of our mission to make information more accessible and useful for everyone We ve spent more than two decades developing not just a better understanding of information on the web but a better understanding of the world Because when we understand information we can make it more helpful ーwhether you re a remote student learning a complex new subject a caregiver looking for trusted information on COVID vaccines or a parent searching for the best route home Deeper understanding with MUMOne of the hardest problems for search engines today is helping you with complex tasks ーlike planning what to do on a family outing These often require multiple searches to get the information you need In fact we find that it takes people eight searches on average to complete complex tasks With a new technology called Multitask Unified Model or MUM we re able to better understand much more complex questions and needs so in the future it will require fewer searches to get things done Like BERT MUM is built on a Transformer architecture but it s times more powerful and can multitask in order to unlock information in new ways MUM not only understands language but also generates it It s trained across different languages and many different tasks at once allowing it to develop a more comprehensive understanding of information and world knowledge than previous models And MUM is multimodal so it understands information across text and images and in the future can expand to more modalities like video and audio Imagine a question like “I ve hiked Mt Adams and now want to hike Mt Fuji next fall what should I do differently to prepare This would stump search engines today but in the future MUM could understand this complex task and generate a response pointing to highly relevant results to dive deeper We ve already started internal pilots with MUM and are excited about its potential for improving Google products Information comes to life with Lens and ARPeople come to Google to learn new things and visuals can make all the difference Google Lens lets you search what you see ーfrom your camera your photos or even your search bar Today we re seeing more than billion searches with Lens every month and an increasingly popular use case is learning For example many students might have schoolwork in a language they aren t very familiar with That s why we re updating the Translate filter in Lens so it s easy to copy listen to or search translated text helping students access education content from the web in over languages AR is also a powerful tool for visual learning With the new AR athletes in Search you can see signature moves from some of your favorite athletes in AR ーlike Simone Biles s famous balance beam routine Evaluate information with About This Result Helpful information should be credible and reliable and especially during moments like the pandemic or elections people turn to Google for trustworthy information Our ranking systems are designed to prioritize high quality information but we also help you evaluate the credibility of sources right in Google Search Our About This Result feature provides details about a website before you visit it including its description when it was first indexed and whether your connection to the site is secure This month we ll start rolling out About This Result to all English results worldwide with more languages to come Later this year we ll add even more detail like how a site describes itself what other sources are saying about it and related articles to check out Exploring the real world with MapsGoogle Maps transformed how people navigate explore and get things done in the world ーand we continue to push the boundaries of what a map can be with industry first features like AR navigation in Live View at scale We recently announced we re on track to launch over AI powered improvements to Google Maps by the end of year and today we re introducing a few of the newest ones Our new routing updates are designed to reduce the likelihood of hard braking on your drive using machine learning and historical navigation information ーwhich we believe could eliminate over million hard braking events in routes driven with Google Maps each year If you re looking for things to do our more tailored map will spotlight relevant places based on time of day and whether or not you re traveling Enhancements to Live View and detailed street maps will help you explore and get a deep understanding of an area as quickly as possible And if you want to see how busy neighborhoods and parts of town are you ll be able to do this at a glance as soon as you open Maps More ways to shop with Google People are shopping across Google more than a billion times per day and our AI enhanced Shopping Graph ーour deep understanding of products sellers brands reviews product information and inventory data ーpowers many features that help you find exactly what you re looking for Because shopping isn t always a linear experience we re introducing new ways to explore and keep track of products Now when you take a screenshot Google Photos will prompt you to search the photo with Lens so you can immediately shop for that item if you want And on Chrome we ll help you keep track of shopping carts you ve begun to fill so you can easily resume your virtual shopping trip We re also working with retailers to surface loyalty benefits for customers earlier to help inform their decisions Last year we made it free for merchants to sell their products on Google Now we re introducing a new simplified process that helps Shopify s million merchants make their products discoverable across Google in just a few clicks Whether we re understanding the world s information or helping you understand it too we re dedicated to making our products more useful every day And with the power of AI no matter how complex your task we ll be able to bring you the highest quality most relevant results |

Working with merchants to give you more ways to shopWe want to help people discover learn about and shop for the products they love ーwhether those products come from a big box retailer new direct to consumer brands or the mom and pop shop down the street We re supporting an open network of retailers and shoppers to help businesses get discovered and give people more options when they re looking to buy Two concrete steps we ve taken to support discoverability for all merchants are eliminating commission fees and making it free for sellers on Google To show you the most relevant shopping information we must have a deep understanding of the products that appear across Google and in the world around us ーfrom images and videos to online reviews and inventory in local stores That s why today we shed some light on the technology behind our Shopping Graph our most comprehensive real time dataset about products inventory and merchants The Shopping Graph is a dynamic AI enhanced model that understands a constantly changing set of products sellers brands reviews and most importantly the product information and inventory data we receive from brands and retailers directly ーas well as how those attributes relate to one another With people shopping across Google more than a billion times a day the Shopping Graph makes those sessions more helpful by connecting people with over billion listings from millions of merchants across the web It works in real time so people can discover and shop for products that are available right now The Google Shopping Graph Having a deep understanding of the world s products is just one piece of the puzzle To help more merchants get discovered it s important that we support like minded partners who share in Google s mission to democratize e commerce That s why today at Google I O we announced that we re expanding our partnership with Shopify introducing a new simplified process that will let Shopify s million merchants feature their products across Google in just a few clicks This new collaboration with Shopify will enable merchants to become discoverable to high intent consumers across Google Search Shopping YouTube Google Images and more As we eliminate barriers like fees and improve our technology we ve seen a increase in the size of our product catalog and an increase in merchants on our platform But exactly how do these sellers and their products show up across Google Search Shopping Image Search and YouTube are popular ways for people to research and discover products Today we announced even more ways to get discovered by people shopping every day Discover more with new shopping experiencesWe know it s easy to get inspired just by strolling your neighborhood browsing a magazine or taking note of something online That s why we re building new more integrated shopping experiences to meet you where you already are For instance one of the most popular ways people take note of things they like is by taking a screenshot ーbut it s not always easy to take action on those screenshots afterward Now when you view any screenshot in Google Photos there will be a suggestion to search the photo with Lens allowing you to see search results that can help you find that pair of shoes or wallpaper pattern that caught your eye Using Lens to find that perfect pair of sneakers We also know that shopping isn t always a linear experience You may open your browser intending to shop but switch your focus to an email or news article or you might not be ready to buy yet That s why along with other new modules in Chrome that help you pick up where you left off we re introducing a new feature in Chrome that works locally on your device to let you see your open carts when you open a new tab So when you step away or browse on other sites you can pick up your shopping right where you left off Reminders for your shopping carts in Chrome Linking a loyalty program from Sephora Once you re ready to make your purchase we want to make it easy for you to get the best value for the products you re buying Coming soon we ll let you link your favorite loyalty programs from merchants like Sephora to your Google account to show you the best purchase options across Google helping brands and their customers foster a stronger more direct relationship We ll continue to work toward bringing you a better shopping experience Be sure to tune into Google Marketing Live GML next week to hear more updates |

An Effective Strategy To Learn Vue.js In Less Than Seven Days |
https://dev.to/blarzhernandez/an-effective-strategy-to-learn-vue-js-in-less-than-seven-days-4dp6
|
An Effective Strategy To Learn Vue js In Less Than Seven Days No BS Here the action plan and strategy I followed to achieve itLearning Vue js in less than seven days was one of my recent challenges At first I was skeptical about if I was going to able to achieve it Before following the next pragmatic methodology to learn Vue js that we are going to reveal throughout this post I have I wrong believe I thought that those who are knowledgeable in different areas were born with a special power I was completely wrong As someone said Everything is difficult until you know how to do it After I finished university and obtained a master s degree in Computer Science I dug into the self taught journey Over this journey I realized that the difference between super learners and others is basically the way both learn I knew nothing about building a learning map based on your personal needs and even less about how to identify what drives me if it is an internal or external force As cliche as it sounds setting the right mindset plays a big role in achieving your goal in less time and effort If we are now jumping on the technical and explicit things related to Vue js there will be a few crucial things to consider Choosing the official documentation and a video course format will save you a lot of time so you can get familiar with the main concepts faster Anyway let s jump to the exact action plan I followed to learn Vue js in less than seven days Disclaimer This is just a guide to give you a list of key factors to succeed while learning Vue js The outcome might vary depending on different factors like your level of experience in this case mainly with JavaScript HTML and CSS In my case I learned the Vue js fundamentals and got a decent code velocity but more complex concepts were digested as long I continued developing Vue js projects There two crucial stages you need to focus on if you want to learn anything faster Planning and Strategy StageThe plan and the strategy you re going to stick to will play a big role in how fast you can grasp all Vue js related concepts and elements Build a learning mapPicking a course and going straight into it is one of the common mistakes we make when learning something new Do you want to fix that So then start by building a learning map It will help you to get an understanding of all the things you are trying to learn Simply put it is a personalized guide based on your own needs OK all of this sounds good but how do I really build a learning map No worries let s jump to it right now To build a learning map to learn Vue js there are three main things you have to consider so you can boost your learning speed What drives you to learn The first thing to do to build a learning map is to be completely honest about what drives you to learn Is this an internal or external force If this is an internal force that means you have a genuine passion for the frontend and you are probably fully focused on mastering every detail of the Vue js framework An external motivation means you are learning it because the company needs you to learn it for an incoming project or because it is a trending and on demand framework and you want to get on that train Yet you are not interested enough in learning it Why is it so crucial to know the type of motivation That s simple Because there might be a few sections or things that are irrelevant for the type of motivation so you can skip them for later With a clear idea of what drives you to learn you can now devote your time and energy to it Build a learning structureThe idea behind building a learning structure is to find the fastest route to grasp a topic By doing this you will speed up your understanding of how Vue js works and all concepts involved in it There are two things you need to consider when building a learning structure concepts and facts Concepts are all the fundamentals and principles about Vue js you need to understand whereas a fact is all the truthful things you must remember about it Concepts and facts to learn about Vue jsWhat is the right version to learn as of this writing Vue or What is a common popular tech stack of an app based on Vue js Get familiar with the most common and used Vue js concepts Facts and dilemmasLet s start out by talking about a few things you will probably stumble upon just after you start learning the Vue js ecosystem What is the right Vue version to learn When I was starting out learning Vue js this was a question that quickly came ups so you might have the same dilemma too Research and dive into it a little bit without worrying too much The idea is to be clear why you re choosing either version or I suggest you just make a comparison at a high level For instance the following Reddit threads will give you insight into the difference between both versions Learn Vue or Should I learn Vue or What is a common popular tech stack of an app based on Vue js Knowing what to learn is crucial to boost your learning speed You need to have an idea of what is a common tech stack when building Vue js apps so you can devote time and energy to those specific elements Here is a common Vue js stack Framework Vue Routing vue routerBundler WebPackUI kit framework Element UI Vuetify State management VueX Common conceptsNow that you have a better understanding of the right Vue js version and the stack you want to focus on it is time to jump to the fundamentals concepts and unique things that belong to Vue js The Vue instance Every Vue js app starts by creating a new Vue instance Data and methods When a Vue instance is created it adds all properties found in its data object toVue s reactivity system Instance Lifecycle Hooks different than lifecycle Hooks This is a series of steps that run whenever the Vue instance is created init beforeCreate created etc Lifecycle hooks Functions that give users the ability to add their own code at a specific stage mounted updated destroyed etc Template syntax Vue js uses an HTML based template syntax that allows you to declaratively bind the rendered DOM to the underlying Vue instance s data The template syntax includes interpolations directives and shorthand e g v bind v on Computed properties Allow you to handle complex logic and operations They are calculations that will be cached based on their dependencies Watchers Allow you to perform asynchronous or expensive operations in response to changing data They allow you to track any property and react to any change on it Class and style binding Allow you to manipulate classes and inline style You can pass data to apply specific classes or styles Conditional rendering Vue js allows you to condition whether or not to show a block component or element using different directives such as v if v else v show and v for Event handling Listening to events from the DOM event handlers inline handlers event modifiers Form input binding Use the v model directive to create two way data binding on form input Components Basics Components are reusable Vue instances with a name like lt button counter gt Passing data to child components with props Props are custom attributes you can register on a component Props passed down to a child component become properties on that child component These concepts are the most common or useful when starting with Vue js Choose the right resourcesBy building a learning structure you figured out the fastest route to learn Vue js Now it is time to research the right resources and methods other effective learners are using As Scott Young the author of the Ultralearning book says Spending one or two hours figuring out the right resources and how do people get good at this is a very useful investment Vue js official guide hours I suggest you start off by reading the Vue js official documentation Since it is your first time with Vue js you probably will not be able to grasp and digest all the information No worries That s fine Choose a highly rated video course hours Again at this point in your learning journey you shouldn t worry about all the items in the course A video course will help you to speed the learning process up It will help you to bridge the understanding gap you had after you read the Vue js official guide The goal of the course is to understand the Vue js fundamentals It should take roughly effective hours While doing this try to use the Pomodoro technique in order to avoid burnout I suggest taking the following Vue js courses A few of them are free and others are quite cheap so there are no excuses Courses Develop with VueJS Complete Vue js Router and Vuex Course Vue MasteryVue js Fundamentals Execution StageAt this point you have the right mindset a learning map and the right resources to crush the Vue js roadmap In order to grasp as much of Vue s world as possible you need to follow a series of steps The time to execute the plan has arrived Note Keep in mind that all the following steps are required from day to day Teach it to yourself or to a child part of the Feynman technique If you can explain what you have learned in plain English there is no doubt you have achieved two things You are clear about the topic and its elements You can t explain what you don t understand You stored that knowledge in your long term memory rather than in your working memory For any confusing or unclear concepts try to explain them to yourself or to a child without using jargon or dense vocabulary I usually practice this with my four year old son It is not easy at all But when he is able to get an idea of what I am talking about I understand that I grasped it too Go live on YouTubeReally No worries You don t need to expose yourself at least for now Again this is a matter of measuring how much you understand the topic you are learning You don t need to go live on YouTube but live on private mode Confused Let me explain Whenever I am learning something new one effective thing I do is to record myself I try to explain a confusing or complex topic and then see how well I did I use YouTube for simplicity and quick access but you can record yourself using your laptop s tools if you want or use whatever method you feel comfortable with Check the screenshot below I was recording how to know when to use a computed property and a watcher I went live on YouTube but using private visibility If you consider your explanation good enough you can even publish it or just have it there for future access Write down what you have learnedYou might not be a writer but that doesn t mean you can t put your learning process on record and most importantly create the neural connections in your brain to store that knowledge in your long term memory Indeed this article was the result of learning Vue js I documented the most important lessons concepts and elements of the process That helped me to remember things easily Blogging what you are learning will help in different areas and it might end up becoming something meaningful to you at some point That s what I went through I am now a writer Practice practice practiceThis is so obvious Once you have a better understanding of Vue s ecosystem you should implement a project I recommend starting from a basic one to a mid level project There s no silver bullet You will need to practice over and over That is part of our dev journey We will never be prepared enough We will need to re learn and come back several times Closing ThoughtsLearning Vue js in less than seven days was an amazing experience As I outlined throughout this article that doesn t mean I am the boss of Vue js now It means I grasped the relevant concepts and elements because I built a learning map that sped up my learning process Determining if your motivation to learn is internal or external is a key factor to decide what resources to include and what you have to leave out All the prior points are about the plan and strategy to follow They will boost your learning process with Vue js or any JS framework or topic you are learning Yet the execution stage is what will help you to crush your learning process When learning Vue js try to explain to yourself or to a child confusing or complex concepts without using dense vocabulary or jargon Also try to record yourself or write down what you have learned in plain English When you force your brain to explain a concept in your own words you create neural connections that help you to store it in your long term memory Happy coding If this post turned out helpful share it to reach more devs Also feel free to Is it worth it to cross-post on Medium in 2021? |
https://dev.to/jmfayard/is-it-worth-it-to-cross-post-on-medium-in-2021-5dn4
|
Is it worth it to cross post on Medium in Maybe sometimes The writingCopy pasting from DEV basically worksExcept when you use DEV liquid tags but that s understandableBut Medium still does not support code snippets in and that s super lame Instead of your article being a single source of truth you have your article plus ten outside gistRemember to use the option Customize Canonical Link to an URL on your personal websiteDon t have a personal website yet The wonderful people at DEV forem have partnered with Stackbit I use it for with great joy See Medium uses a Dark Design Pattern to hide the Customize Canonical Link option It s hidden in a submenu then the th entry called More settings then you have to scroll completely to the bottom wait it s still hidden behind Advanced Settings then it s still hidden behind a checkbox and only then do you find Customize Canonical Link The paywallAs a reader I hate the Medium PaywallBut that would be OK if it actually gives writers sustainable income There is a paywall to access the Financial Times articles and it segregates between users who don t want to pay and hate it and users who get lots of value from the FT and pay And that s OK And sometimes you get real money on Medium My article “What s Your Current Salary Is a Red Flag That You Don t Want to Work There got K view and I earned with it to this dayBut wait there is a catch it happened only once and I have basically given up retryingAnd that s because on Medium Publications have all the power If you publish on your own name unless you are a celebrity which I assume lots of my readers are you will get few views and peanuts in terms of dollarIsn t that normal if we follow the analogy of the FT paywall Well no let s be real here Medium publications will not play the role of improving your writing the way a professional editor with a set of rules would It s just one or few guys probably not lots of women who earn lots of followersBut actually publications don t earn the followers either they just rent it to Medium My friend at would like to move away from Medium but it s only possible if you don t care about loosing all your readers And I really disliked the experience of submitting to publications You put lots of work in your content you click submit a random number of days later you get a message Thank you but I will pass on this one On the other hand if the publication owner is a friend I would cross post to his publication I m not sure readers get a ton of value from the content behind the paywall anyway For example my article What s Your Current Salary is available freely on DEV and intentionally so Medium uses another Dark Design Pattern to confuse people into using the paywall whether they want it or not I have just published an article today under my company account It s part of the paywall not because we chose to because even after following the help page neither my colleague in charge of the publication nor I can find how to deactivate it SummaryCross posting to Medium can be interesting for reach and sometimes for money but there are big cons as well In general it s not an enjoyable experience If you work at Medium I think you should protest the lack of code snippets and even more against the dark patterns designed to screw the writers |
