海外TECH DEV Community How to build a React CRUD todo app (edit todo) https://dev.to/joelynn94/how-to-build-a-react-crud-todo-app-edit-todo-46g6 How to build a React CRUD todo app edit todo In this series we will build a todo application To begin we will go over a very basic way to build this application and revise as we gain more knowledge I suggest following along and if you get stuck you can fork the code from the Code Sandbox In the previous posts added the ability to delete todos Now lets add the edit functionality Add more stateWe need to add a couple more state values we can use to help us get the editing functionality boolean state to know if we are editing this will let us display different inputs based on a condition conditional rendering const isEditing setIsEditing useState false object state to set so we know which todo item we are editing const currentTodo setCurrentTodo useState Setup onChange handler for edit inputNow lets setup an onChange handler for the new input we will create in the next step function to get the value of the edit input and set the new state function handleEditInputChange e set the new state value to what s currently in the edit input box setCurrentTodo currentTodo text e target value console log currentTodo Re format JSXWe are going to make quite a few changes in the JSX I ll break this down We need to check if we are in editing modeIf we are editing then display the editing formIf we are not editing then display the add todo formThe editing form has a couple additional buttons so the user can control what they would like to do return lt div className App gt We need to conditionally render different inputs based on if we are in editing mode isEditing if we are editing display the edit todo input make sure to add the handleEditFormSubmit function in the onSubmit prop lt form onSubmit handleEditFormSubmit gt we ve added an h element lt h gt Edit Todo lt h gt also added a label for the input lt label htmlFor editTodo gt Edit todo lt label gt notice that the value for the update input is set to the currentTodo state also notice the handleEditInputChange is being used lt input name editTodo type text placeholder Edit todo value currentTodo text onChange handleEditInputChange gt here we added an update button element use the type submit on the button which will still submit the form when clicked using the handleEditFormSubmit function lt button type submit gt Update lt button gt here we added a Cancel button to set isEditing state back to false which will cancel editing mode lt button onClick gt setIsEditing false gt Cancel lt button gt lt form gt if we are not editing display the add todo input make sure to add the handleFormSubmit function in the onSubmit prop lt form onSubmit handleFormSubmit gt we ve added an h element lt h gt Add Todo lt h gt also added a label for the input lt label htmlFor todo gt Add todo lt label gt notice that the value is still set to the todo state also notice the handleInputChange is still the same lt input name todo type text placeholder Create a new todo value todo onChange handleInputChange gt here we just added a Add button element use the type submit on the button which will still submit the form when clicked using the handleFormSubmit function lt button type submit gt Add lt button gt lt form gt lt ul className todo list gt todos map todo gt lt li key todo id gt todo text we are passing the entire todo object to the handleEditClick function lt button onClick gt handleEditClick todo gt Edit lt button gt lt button onClick gt handleDeleteClick todo id gt Delete lt button gt lt li gt lt ul gt lt div gt After adding the JSX you should see the interface has changed some Handle when a user clicks Edit buttonThere are a few functions you see in the JSX above that we need to make in order to make this function Lets start with when a user clicks on the Edit button We want the Update button and Cancel button and change from the add todo input to the editing input function to handle when the Edit button is clicked function handleEditClick todo set editing to true setIsEditing true set the currentTodo to the todo item that was clicked setCurrentTodo todo for this to work do not forget to use the handleEditClick function in the JSX when its clicked we will pass the todo object as an argument lt ul className todo list gt todos map todo gt lt li key todo id gt todo text we are passing the entire todo object to the handleEditClick function lt button onClick gt handleEditClick todo gt Edit lt button gt lt button onClick gt handleDeleteClick todo id gt Delete lt button gt lt li gt lt ul gt Now we should see that the currentTodo is the todo we clicked on which is getting us close Notice how the todo text is now in the editing input Adding the updated text to the todos stateHere we will create a function that we will call when the form is submitted function to edit a todo item function handleUpdateTodo id updatedTodo here we are mapping over the todos array the idea is check if the todo id matches the id we pass into the function if the id s match use the second parameter to pass in the updated todo object otherwise just use old todo const updatedItem todos map todo gt return todo id id updatedTodo todo set editing to false because this function will be used inside a onSubmit function which means the data was submited and we are no longer editing setIsEditing false update the todos state with the updated todo setTodos updatedItem Call the handleUpdateTodo functionLast step is to actually update the todo item when the form is submitted function handleEditFormSubmit e e preventDefault call the handleUpdateTodo function passing the currentTodo id and the currentTodo object as arguments handleUpdateTodo currentTodo id currentTodo Putting it all togetherAfter doing everything mentioned above you should have something that looks like this import useEffect useState from react import styles css export default function App const todos setTodos useState gt const savedTodos localStorage getItem todos if savedTodos return JSON parse savedTodos else return const todo setTodo useState boolean state to know if we are editing this will let us display different inputs based on a condition conditional rendering const isEditing setIsEditing useState false object state to set so we know which todo item we are editing const currentTodo setCurrentTodo useState useEffect gt localStorage setItem todos JSON stringify todos todos function handleInputChange e setTodo e target value function to get the value of the edit input and set the new state function handleEditInputChange e set the new state value to what s currently in the edit input box setCurrentTodo currentTodo text e target value console log currentTodo function handleFormSubmit e e preventDefault if todo setTodos todos id todos length text todo trim setTodo function handleEditFormSubmit e e preventDefault handleUpdateTodo currentTodo id currentTodo function handleDeleteClick id const removeItem todos filter todo gt return todo id id setTodos removeItem function to edit a todo item function handleUpdateTodo id updatedTodo here we are mapping over the todos array the idea is check if the todo id matches the id we pass into the function if the id s match use the second parameter to pass in the updated todo object otherwise just use old todo const updatedItem todos map todo gt return todo id id updatedTodo todo set editing to false because this function will be used inside a onSubmit function which means the data was submited and we are no longer editing setIsEditing false update the todos state with the updated todo setTodos updatedItem function to handle when the Edit button is clicked function handleEditClick todo set editing to true setIsEditing true set the currentTodo to the todo item that was clicked setCurrentTodo todo return lt div className App gt We need to conditionally render different inputs based on if we are in editing mode isEditing if we are editing display the edit todo input make sure to add the handleEditFormSubmit function in the onSubmit prop lt form onSubmit handleEditFormSubmit gt we ve added an h element lt h gt Edit Todo lt h gt also added a label for the input lt label htmlFor editTodo gt Edit todo lt label gt notice that the value for the update input is set to the currentTodo state also notice the handleEditInputChange is being used lt input name editTodo type text placeholder Edit todo value currentTodo text onChange handleEditInputChange gt here we added an update button element use the type submit on the button which will still submit the form when clicked using the handleEditFormSubmit function lt button type submit gt Update lt button gt here we added a Cancel button to set isEditing state back to false which will cancel editing mode lt button onClick gt setIsEditing false gt Cancel lt button gt lt form gt if we are not editing display the add todo input make sure to add the handleFormSubmit function in the onSubmit prop lt form onSubmit handleFormSubmit gt we ve added an h element lt h gt Add Todo lt h gt also added a label for the input lt label htmlFor todo gt Add todo lt label gt notice that the value is still set to the todo state also notice the handleInputChange is still the same lt input name todo type text placeholder Create a new todo value todo onChange handleInputChange gt here we just added a Add button element use the type submit on the button which will still submit the form when clicked using the handleFormSubmit function lt button type submit gt Add lt button gt lt form gt lt ul className todo list gt todos map todo gt lt li key todo id gt todo text we are passing the entire todo object to the handleEditClick function lt button onClick gt handleEditClick todo gt Edit lt button gt lt button onClick gt handleDeleteClick todo id gt Delete lt button gt lt li gt lt ul gt lt div gt You should be able to change the todo item text now This is the fourth post in this series Keep in mind that in this post we added the ability to edit a todo item in the app We now have full CRUD functionality However I think this could be structured better We will look at re factoring the code into separate components in the next post Thanks for reading 2021-05-20 13:27:38
海外TECH DEV Community Breaking Down the Acronyms: SSR vs. SSG https://dev.to/aspittel/breaking-down-the-acronyms-ssr-vs-ssg-407b Breaking Down the Acronyms SSR vs SSGAcronyms are always fun they re helpful for reducing the effort of saying out a full long winded technical term but they can also look like alphabet soup and be really confusing to newbies I want to use this post to explain two terms that are often seen in tandem and start with the same two letters but are pretty different concepts Static Site Generation SSG and Server Side Rendering SSR are both back to being hot topics in web development but what are they And why are they so widely talked about SSGStatic site generators enable developers to create many pages all at once using templates with content plugged into them For example you may have a blog page for your application each one has a header title the author s name and image and the content itself all using the same layout from post to post You don t want to code a new HTML page for each blog post Instead each blog post could be written in a markdown file and then plugged into the correct template format so that each web page is standardized using a static site generator This pattern is much faster for the developer than writing out an HTML boilerplate for each web page The site is generated at build time meaning that you have a script that plugs every single piece of content into a template generating the HTML needed to properly render the page This is awesome for performance whenever the user goes to the page they are served a static HTML page the data is already plugged in and won t need to be plugged in by the server BUT there s a catch since the process is done at build time the site must have the build script re run and re deployed whenever you want to make changes Say you write a new blog post you d need to re build and re deply the site There are ways to automate this like web hooks but it s still not as flexible as a dynamically generated site SSRServer side rendering has been a common pattern in web development for years Frameworks like Ruby on Rails and Django used it to dynamically populate HTML templates with variable content If the user navigated to blog post for example the server side logic would plug the correct title content and author information into an HTML page and then send that back to the user So with SSR the templating process happens at the time of the request instead of on build This pattern fell out of favor as more logic got pushed to the client side and front end frameworks became more predominant That being said server side rendering still has many benefits such as end user performance since JavaScript can be used much more minimally Also search engines often struggle with parsing JavaScript generated web pages Recently more JavaScript libraries have swung back in the server side rendering direction Next js being one of the most notable That being said React has also discussed adding server side rendered components directly within the library itself With these modern web frameworks you get the developer experience that comes with a library like React but you can serve HTML to your end user giving them a potential performance boost ConclusionI hope this blog post helped to break down the differences between SSR and SSG and when you would use each in your app In one sentence SSR fetches data when the user requests the content and SSG fetches data when you build a site 2021-05-20 13:27:32

海外TECH DEV Community Upping My Accessibility Skills https://dev.to/clgolden/upping-my-accessibility-skills-5h0a Upping My Accessibility SkillsIn acknowledgement of Global Accessibility Awareness Day GAAD I ve finally done something I ve been meaning to do since I started coding years ago I listened to my website with a screen reader Using my portfolio site I recorded a bit of the Screen Reader AudioAt first it was overwhelming All those extra words made it sound like gibberish There are lots of settings with differences between OS updates and I still don t know how to get it to just slow down pause or go back A handicapped person would certainly need knowledgeable help to get a working system set up According to the CDC in adults in the US have serious difficulty doing the things I take for granted Difficulties that would make it hard to work a keyboard see hear and understanding web content The pandemic would have only made things worse for many of these people Fortunately according to Mozilla s Accessibility Learning Area HTML used correctly is a strong starting point There s also a fair amount of overlap with good SEO practices and Accessibility Besides compassion there are other reasons to up one s game in this aspect of front end development For one handicapped people buy stuff too so that s motivation for business owners For another reason it s the law Enforcement comes about through someone sueing the web owner so my advice is to not aggravate and confuse your site visitor Web Content Accessibility Guideline WCAG The World Wide Web Consortium WC develops standards for the web It s official accessibility guidelines are spelled out in the WCAG the Web Content Accessibility Guideline I tried I really did try to read the WCAG documentation even made a spreadsheet Finally I gave up It s probably good to have such a comprehensive gathering of info somewhere but in practical terms everyday web devs who are struggling to keep up with the latest tech so they can make a living will be too discouraged to follow through with that set of docs Thank Goodness for The Ay Project The AY Project is a community driven effort to make digital accessibility easier Ay is a symbol for the word Accessibility A followed by characters then y They have a Checklist written in language I can understand with linked references to the official Guidelines There are main categories and several sub categories that each deserve enough study to produce their own article I can see why the industry of accessibility testing is going strong It s a specialty Initially I intended go through each one of the items and make sure I had them included in my website boilerplate and thought process But that s going to take more time than I have right now So this article is going to be more of a planning exercise I ll look at each category and see what I m already doing and what I still need to learn with some references for study I know this will help me learn I hope it will give you some tips and perspective too The Checklist ContentSimple direct easy to read content is important for everyone who comes to a website Button anchor and label content needs to stand alone with respect to its meaning Good for SEO too It takes a little extra creative effort Global ContentResponsive code design and standards compliant HTML takes care of a lot of these items Semantic HTML provides good info for screen readers except for the generic div section and form elements I need to learn more about ARIA Accessible Rich Internet Applications attributes especially now that I m learning how to build web apps with JavaScript KeyboardTab through the website and see if the focus order makes sense I hate the default outline style that browsers apply to active links CSS Tricks has a few modern articles on creating my own styles for those focus elements ImagesMake sure all images have the alt text attribute even if they re purely decorative then the alt should be null as in no space I need to experiment with null alt attributes to see how they sound I ve been adding a space character all this time and the screen reader says unlabelled image which sounds irresponsible to me There are a lot of recommendations for best use of alt text WordPress users did you notice the link to An alt Decision Tree that core provided sometime in the last few years HeadingsHeadings are for grouping written content in meaningful ways not for decoration Well organized use of h h h etc tags are helpful to everyone disabled or not It s also good SEO There should only be one h on a page for accessibility This means the site title needs to use a different element ListsUse the right list elements for lists ControlsLots of good common sense guidance in this section Use anchor elements for links the button element for buttons None of the links in this article automatically open to a new tab window but if they did one needs to notify the site visitor it s going to happen I wish we had a universal ASCII symbol for links that open in a new tab I ll need to test if how screen readers pick up the target attribute I recently started using skip links in my websites but need to review them for updates Again a CSS Tricks article How to Create a “Skip to Content Link looks like a good starting point TablesSemantics again Use table elements for tabulated info The Guidelines ask that th and caption elements be used as well I haven t been using those regularly I m going to have to look up the scope attribute which the Guidelines ask for FormsMake sure forms are well organized and labelled Learn best practices for styling error and other status messages Media including Video and AudioDon t auto play and make sure controls are available The Guidelines on providing readable text applies use captions and transcripts This means I should have prepared a transcript of the audio I ve included above Have you ever typed up your own transcript It takes a good amount of effort and time and a helpful transcription app that my clients would probably not pay for AppearanceUsing a simple straightforward layout is good for all users and is forced upon us when thinking in mobile first mode I already test my websites in all the modern popular browser and the mobile devices I have at my disposal The WCAG Guidelines also asks us to test in specialized browsing modes such as Windows High Contrast or Inverted Colors For freelancers this will add costs to a project that clients may not want to pay I ll need to learn the different specialized browsing modes on Window and Mac OS and test which styles are broken by those modes I ve never done it before but increasing text to would be a good test Another design pattern I ve never considered can be evaluated by what s called The Straw Test It s always a good principle to not spread content over too wide an area AnimationContent that moves can be problematic to some people Here are the items to check for Ensure animations are subtle and do not flash too much Provide a mechanism to pause background video Make sure all animation obeys the prefers reduced motion media query Color ContrastNormal and large sized text and icons all have specific contrast ratios Here s a tool for calculating color contrast ratios I didn t even know it could be calculated As always make sure text over graphics are clear There is a CSS pseudo element I wasn t familiar with although I ve enjoyed its use on some websites It s the selection pseudo element and it adds style to text that the user has highlighted As you can imagine make sure the reader can still read the text Mobile and TouchThe sub categories of this one are all the same as good mobile first responsive styling Make sure the site can be rotated check the distance between links and buttons I ve been seeing horizontal scrolling lately The Guidelines say not to do it but it looks useful in some cases More research is needed on this Okay so that s the list I m going to be working with There s no such thing as Accessible We can only keep striving to improve Let me and anyone reading know of additional tips references or experiences you have Best 2021-05-20 13:01:42
