execution trace infoThe most effective way to improve the performance of code is to create a local dev environment that stresses it Once you can replicate a performance issue locally you can use all your tools and tricks to address the issue Avoiding guesswork and leveraging the power of modern code editors and tools helps you to reduce your mean time to repair MTTR when responding to an incident or ticket Once you can collect the performance data you need it s a cardinal sin to start guessing about where the problem lies Don t guess Collect data about the performance of your code and use it The primary reason that we are tempted to avoid profilers is that they have a deserved reputation for being clunky and hard to setup Lately I ve been working on a way of collecting performance data that is dirt simple to setup and as of today our free open source tool AppMap do this AppMaps have always included timing data and now the AppMap UI shows performance data when you open an AppMap in your code editor This tells you for sure if you can replicate a performance bug locally and you can drill down through the code execution tree to find performance hotspots You can also compare the AppMap data to a reported issue to verify that you can identify and replicate a performance issue Beyond verifying that the issue can be replicated locally AppMap captures the entire context of code being recorded and executed and provides detailed information about web services function calls parameter values and SQL Taken together the AppMap contains a wealth of data that you can use to analyze performance issues By virtue of its simple install and setup process flexible methods for recording your code and the comprehensive data included in the code maps AppMap is a great way to get started with a performance optimization task Once you identify the root cause and make your fix comparing AppMap s before and after performance data allows you to confirm that you ve addressed the performance issue in addition to any associated test cases These before and after data can also be shared in a post mortem to communicate the problem attached to a ticket that describes the fix and saved in a knowledge base to help prevent the issue from happening again Here s a brief demo of how to quickly troubleshoot and verify a fix of a performance issue in a popular Python application FYI we ve Demo transcript It s come to my attention that in our community app listings of past meetings that were recently added by a new team member feel notably slower than renderings of future meetings and a quick glance at database utilization shows a rapid increase of queries since the new feature has been introduced I ll use a custom test that will amplify the performance difference between the two cases simulating fetching and rendering of meetings To observe the behavior and measure the performance differences I m going to use the free and open source framework AppMap Now let me run the test and record my code behavior with AppMap This is interesting because the future meetings took s while past meetings took a lot more time s Let s drill down and compare the code flows of the two requests This is a Django app and I can see that the renderer took s for future and s for past meetings I can also instantly see that the first code flow has four children vs of the second one Let s look at the first flow first I can see that three SQL commands were executed for the future meetings request The first lists all future meetings from the table and the two following SQL commands pre fetch data for all future meetings from related tables Let s drill down to the second flow the request to view all past meetings The second sequence starts with fetching all past meetings What follows is very different though The ORM runs three queries for each past meeting in the database that s trips to the database total for past meetings created by the test Even on my dev environment with no other database load the performance difference between the two SQL command patterns is pretty remarkable Let s see what happens in the code that sets up the data entities A quick glance in the view implementation reveals that the past meetings view lacks the select related and prefetch related method calls causing the observed N problem class FutureMeetingsAll ListView template name meetings the tests were passing previously functionally the existing code works but it s causing extra costs and risk and puts an unnecessary strain on the database Let s fix and run the test again class PastMeetingsAll ListView template name meetings past meetings all html queryset Meeting objects filter when lt datetime datetime now datetime timedelta hours order by when select related where prefetch related topics meeting sponsors And here we can see that with the fix in place the number of the database queries dropped and the performance of the past meetings flow has improved dramatically To recap this demo AppMap helped me quickly identify a performance problem and verify a fix by providing me with all the clues required to discover and address the performance impacting 海外TECH	Engadget	Marvel’s ‘What If…?’ is a fun diversion, but not required viewing	https://www.engadget.com/marvel-what-if-disney-plus-animated-episode-one-183034023.html?src=rss	Marvel s What If… is a fun diversion but not required viewingMarvel has often been taken to task for poor pacing on its shows The Netflix programs were always said to be padded out with more installments than they really needed per season The Disney era has given us shows with fewerepisodes but that hasn t deterred complaints about slow pacing What If… premiering this week on the service has a different problem It s frantic and rushed like a podcast episode played at x speed The concept behind What If… is simple Take a pivotal moment from the Marvel Cinematic Universe change one thing see what happens In the premiere episode set during the events of Captain America The First Avenger Peggy Carter chooses to stay in the room where Steve is receiving the super soldier serum Steve gets shot forcing Peggy to jump into the machine and get bulked up in his place You d need to be intimately familiar with the original movie to spot the difference which is why the omniscient narrator is there to point it out It s probably the only time the episode stops to catch its breath The problem is that this is a half hour show attempting to present an alternate version of a two hour movie It isn t even enough to just say that Captain Carter has super powers they feel the need to show how the events of the entire movie play out down to the final battle with the Red Skull There isn t a lot of time for character development because they assume you already know the characters well from seeing them on the silver screen Also why is she Captain Carter and not Captain Britain Marvel StudiosIt runs from plot point to plot point a highlight reel of the film with some small and a lot of big changes You ll probably want to rewatch the original movie either before or after just because there are so many winks and nudges to it that the episode simply cannot stand alone It s like a DVD extra and fan fiction had a baby ーwhich to be fair is what the original comic felt like The difference here is that this is a version of What If that gets to play in the MCU sandbox with the voices and likenesses to boot except for Hugo Weaving who is once again replaced by Ross Marquand as the Red Skull Animation is the only way to pull it off given that the cast and setting changes with every episode so a live action production would be prohibitively expensive Marvel StudiosBut despite being owned by one of the most famous animation studios in the world Marvel Studios went with third party animators It s a cel shaded style which is more often used in video games and here looks a lot like rotoscoping It s sort of stiff and awkward with more attention paid to making characters look like their actors instead of being more fluid or expressive It s a shame given that Disney s short film Paperman utilized a hybrid D D style which looks similar to this but with a lot more personality Future episodes will explore other divergences from the MCU like T Challa becoming Star Lord or Tony Stark getting saved by Killmonger So it s likely some episodes will be far more enjoyable than others based on their conceit alone though Captain Carter is still a solid start But a good concept can t completely overcome animation and pacing issues	2021-08-11 18:30:34
