RIP Jekyll (The Genesis of the Jamstack) |
https://dev.to/jaredcwhite/rip-jekyll-the-genesis-of-the-jamstack-3lb0
|
RIP Jekyll The Genesis of the Jamstack I can tell you there s no secret plan to revive Jekyll from the dead source Jekyll is in frozen mode and permanent hiatus RIP Jekyll source Good luck to Jared White to build a modern SSG for the Ruby community ーFrank Taillandier late release maintainer of Jekyll known as DirtyF on GitHub Those comments were posted in May by Frank Taillandier in The New Dynamic Slack chat Please follow the above source links for additional details They re unfortunately no longer in the Slack archive due to history limits so those screenshots which I took at the time may very well be the only proof of this information If they sound shocking to you they should But let me back up a moment I adored Jekyll I loved it ever since I first discovered itーand the brave new world of static site generatorsーin As a refugee from the wild reaches of PHP amp WordPress I pivoted my own web studio Whitefusion to build Jekyll and Rails solutions for clients I watched firsthand the rise of Netlify and the Jamstack I cheered Jekyll on from the bleachers and wanted nothing but the best of success for the project…until it became clear to me in early that there were serious concerns to be had about the future viability of Jekyll Those concerns led me to fork Jekyll and create Bridgetown So everything I m about to tell you comes from a place of love not gamesmanship Back to the topic at hand…immediately after Frank posted the above comments I attemptedーrepeatedlyーto reach out to him in order for us personally to issue a joint public statement as to the nature of Jekyll s frozen status and the implication that Bridgetown seemingly had become heir apparent to Jekyll but to no avail I can only speculate why he would feel free to communicate with me in The New Dynamic s Slack about Jekyll s frozen statusーand wish me luck in building Bridgetown ーyet refrain from making any public statement to that effect I considered publishing my own unilateral statement concerning the matter but in the end decided to respect Frank s desire to communicate only through the Slack chat and not work with me on a public statement Since that time however Frank has sadly and tragically passed away Here s a wonderful obituary by Scott Gallant CEO of Forestry TinaCloud Normally the passing of the lead release maintainer of a major GitHub project with over stars which also happens to be the progenitor of the modern Jamstack movement would be a topic of conversation But with no mention of this news and how it affects the Jekyll project on Jekyll s website GitHub repo or community forum as of September ーand with seemingly no involvement from GitHub directly more on that shortly ーwe can only surmise that the flow of public communication for the project truly has ceased Therefore it s now the time where I feel obligated to make a public appeal In my honest assessment There is no clear path forward for Jekyll as a viable and reliable open source technology In recent years the only other active core team member besides FrankーAshwin Maroliーwas inexplicably absent for most of As you can see in Frank s comments back in May he believed Ashwin had simply stepped down for good Mere weeks ago however Ashwin suddenly emerged once again in commits comments on Jekyll s repo with no public mention of why or what his next plans are This doesn t inspire confidence in the future of Jekyll I hope for the sake of everyone who relies on Jekyll for their businesses and organizations that Ashwin has decided to remain and pay attention to Jekyll again but I can tell you right now this is not how you establish and maintain trust in the open source community Open source in looks like Engagement on TwitterOfficial Discord chat roomPublic roadmapPredictable release cyclesWelcoming community involvement in shaping new features and tackling technical debtCultivating working relationships with wider ecosystems in this case Ruby Jamstack etc Lack of any one of these points isn t the end of the world but at the present moment Jekyll lacks ALL of them That s a real problem Is Jekyll truly dead as Frank surmised in his May comments It all depends on how you look at it But any honest assessment of the situation must acknowledge that Jekyll s future is in grave peril Bridgetown s Road to and the Future of Ruby Static Site GeneratorsLet s look at some positive developments that will provide a path forward for Jekyll users As lead maintainer for Bridgetown I recently posted a brand new roadmap for reaching v and beyond along with our upcoming fundraising efforts to meet and exceed those goals What I forgot to reiterate is how important it is to me personally that we provide clear guidelines and documentation for Jekyll users who wish to upgrade to Bridgetown While Bridgetown has diverged somewhat from Jekyll in terms of architecture and is not source compatible for example plugins and themes it nevertheless remains inspired by Jekyll and can offer a compelling answer for nearly all of the features and configuration options Jekyll users know and loveーall while adding a dizzying array of new features Jekyll has never and will likely never provide I have yet to hear feedback from a former Jekyll user who didn t immediately fall in love with Bridgetown But if for some reason Bridgetown simply isn t to your liking what s the alternative You could try out another Ruby static site generator with a long and impressive pedigree Middleman There s also Nanoc Besides those the most obvious choice some might say would be to switch to Eleventy which is very popular and offers a fairly Jekyll like experience but for JavaScript users in the NPM ecosystem I certainly have nothing against any of those projects and many more in the world of SSGs from Hugo to Pelican but I m a Rubyist through and through I want Jekyll damnit Only WAY better That s why I started Bridgetown in the first place and why it s been making waves over the past months See here and here and here and here and… So let s stop beating around the bush Despite the sad news regarding Jekyll the future for Ruby on the Jamstack remains bright indeed and we re here to lead the way We ll be sharing the details on our first major fundraising effort along with a line by line project plan later this month In the meantime please follow us on Twitter and join our Discord so you won t miss a thing •Some of you may be wondering wait I thought Jekyll was created by GitHub and powers GitHub Pages Doesn t GitHub work on Jekyll The answer is…complicated While Jekyll was indeed initially created by Tom Preston Werner the founder of GitHub it has stood apart as a separately maintained project for quite some time now Matt Rogers listed as one of three core team members has no active code level involvement other than an occasional PR review and previous lead maintainer Parker Moore stepped down in Most damning however is that GitHub Pages is still running on the Jekyll x branch and never upgraded to Jekyll Yes that s right any meaningful improvements Jekyll has made in and beyond are not available in GitHub Pagesーunless you precompile your site using a GitHub Action But if you do that you can theoretically use any SSGーincluding Bridgetown I suspect therein lies the actual future of the GitHub Pages produce…it s likely to evolve into a generic hosting tool and Jekyll will merely be one option among many So no from everything I can tell GitHub won t suddenly be stepping in to save Jekyll That ship my friends has sailed As Rubyists and web developers we must plan our next moves based on how things truly are not on how we wish them to be Once Jekyll sparked joy now we must thank it let it go and press onward to a better future |

Two sum LeetCode problem explained in simple terms using Dictionary Two Sum ProblemGiven an array of integers nums and an integer target return indices of the two numbers such that they add up to target You may assume that each input would have exactly one solution and you may not use the same element twice You can return the answer in any order Example Input nums target Output Output Because nums nums we return Example Input nums target Output Example Input nums target Output Let s startAs usual our main goal is to solve the problem and at the same time achieve the best time complexity with minimal space complexity If you are a beginner to problem solving or trying data structure problems I suggest you start with a brute force approach and then try to optimize your solution to the best time space complexity AnalysisBefore jumping into a solution or pseudocode read the problem statement a couple of times and make sure to understand it well To start with we can check each number in the array by comparing its sum with all other numbers This will give O n complexity with a simple brute force approach Let s see how we can do this better Let s assume the two numbers we need to find are A and B If A is the current element in our loop iteration B is the other number in the same array A B target then B target A How about if we could store keep track of target A in a data structure when we traverse each number in the array We will only store the difference in a set if it doesn t already exist If it exists already then the current indice and stored value indice are the answer We will just return it Dictionary is the best data structure candidate for our solution in C In Java we can go with Hashtable Difference between Hashtable and Dictionary in C Dictionary is a generic collection which is generally used to store key value pairs Dictionary is defined under System Collection Generics namespace It is dynamic in nature which means the size of the dictionary is growing according to the need A Hashtable is a collection of key value pairs that are arranged based on the hash code of the key It is the non generic type of collection which is defined in System Collections namespace Algorithm PseudocodeCreate a Dictionary to store the target currentelement s value in the array Iterate each element in the array and get the difference with target If the difference value already exists in the dictionary that is our answer Return the indices of the current element and the corresponding difference value stored in the dictionary Else store the difference value in the dictionary At the end throw exception No solution found if we don t have the difference element in our dictionary Let s start writing the solution Loop through the elements in the array If we find the difference element in the dictionary that matches that sums up the target That s it That is our answer Given Array contains the two indices that sums up the target Solution in C class Solution public int TwoSum int nums int target Dictionary lt int int gt dict new Dictionary lt int int gt for int i i lt nums Length i int diff target nums i if dict ContainsKey diff return new int dict diff i if dict ContainsKey nums i dict Add nums i i throw new Exception No solution found ComplexityTime Complexity gt O n gt Traverse the array one time Dictionary Add ContainsKey operations are O time Space Complexity gt O n gt Dictionary stores at most n number of key value pairs ConclusionThis problem is a very good example of Hashtable Dictionary Data structure usage to reduce the complexity from O n to O n Do check out more examples in this category for further learning ReferencesThe LeetCode Problem in this article Thanks for reading this post I hope this article is informative and helpful in some way If it is please like and share Follow me on Twitter LinkedIn for related content Happy learning |

Getting Started with PythonEveryone s journey of learning a programming language or anything new for that matter is different The beauty of Python is how easy it is to read and understand it whether you have experience in programming or not I started learning Python last year and it became one of my favorite languages in no time So how should you get started with Python Here are some of the things that worked for me Join some course on Python Although this is very subjective I feel like following a course helps learn the language in a proper order It s easier to learn a programming language in a structured way There are many paid and free courses out there to learn from I have linked a few down below Course on YouTube by freecodecampCourse on UdemyCourse on Coursera Don t skip the basics This one is especially for those who are familiar with other programming languages The syntax of Python is extremely easy and readable and it is very tempting to skip through the basics Python has a lot of features that you might miss on if you do A code you have written in five lines might just need one or two This may not seem like a lot but it matters when you re making larger projects Practice as you learn the concepts As I mentioned earlier it is very easy to get carried away and not put in time in practicing every concept But in order to achieve fluency in programming it is crucial to practice the smallest of concepts so you remember them when you need them You do not need to remember everything but it helps to explore the different features available I would also suggest looking up the solutions to some exercises to find more efficient and innovative ways to solve a particular problem What are you learning Python for Contrary to what most people think Python can be used for a lot more than data science There are lots of libraries and modules open sourced for various purposes As you advance in the language it is very helpful to acquaint yourself with those libraries and modules like Beautiful Soup for Web Development PIL for Image and Video Manipulation etc It helps us understand what exactly we re required to code and what is already available for us Make some fun projects Implementing all the concepts you have learnt is just as important as learning them Exercises help us practice every concept separately but when you make projects you learn how to put them all together and make something out of it You could make games like tic tac toe card games or as you go further bigger projects too This will give you the confidence that you can build something of your own Learning anything new is not easy and the journey is full of ups and downs You might feel demotivated at some points but remember that we all do too Some concepts might look daunting break them into smaller concepts look it up on the internet and give yourself time to absorb the concepts I hope this gave you a brief idea on how to get started with one of the most popular programming languages right now Happy Coding |

Fake Walmart press release caused litecoin x s price to jump percentDespite a bogus press release claiming otherwise Walmart isn t accepting litecoin for payments anytime soon The fake release caused the price of the cryptocurrency to briefly shoot up by percent before it tumbled back down The press release went out on newswire distribution network GlobeNewswire which later pulled the phony announcement and issued a notice to disregard it A Walmart spokesperson told CNBC nbsp the press release was fake and that the company asked GlobeNewswire how it was distributed in the first place Walmart didn t post the announcement on its own website and the press release listed an email address with a website that doesn t work Engadget has contacted Walmart and GlobeNewswire owner Intrado for comment If the person who sent the fake press release had a cryptocurrency wallet bulging with litecoin they may have made an absolute killing There s no doubt it was a creative way to inflate the price of a cryptocurrency but perhaps it wasn t the smartest idea It could draw an investigation from the Securities and Exchange Commission |
