海外TECH DEV Community Post-Bootcamp Retrospective https://dev.to/jrrohrer/post-bootcamp-retrospective-2da3 Post Bootcamp RetrospectiveOn November th I passed my final project assessment and officially graduated from Flatiron School The following weekend I competed in my first hackathon Technica with two fellow alumnae and we won both categories we submitted our project to The past two months have been full of career prep transforming my LinkedIn page to reflect my new skills building a portfolio site to showcase my projects mock interviews and working through Flatiron s postwork curriculum Just before Christmas I completed my mock technical interview which went really well considering I didn t know much about data structures and am still stuck on the functional components are presentational components mindset As part of the career prep curriculum graduates are given a token for a free mock technical interview through SkilledInc I chose the React interview which lasted about an hour I was asked several questions Tell me about yourself some JavaScript concept questions and a few data structure questions The problem I was given to solve was Create two buttons containing the text A and B When A is clicked the text should become bold When B is clicked B should become bold and A should be un bolded I answered this question with a lot of basic JavaScript partly because I was given the problem inside of a functional component When the interviewer asked why I didn t make use of state to solve the problem I told her how I would have solved this inside of a class component The clicked button would be tracked in state the clicked button would be given a className attribute and some CSS would be triggered to change the styling based on which button was clicked But since my mindset for functional components is that they are presentational I solved the problem without using state She accepted my answer and I passed I had been really nervous about the mock technical going in but the interviewer was very patient calm and friendly She gave me a lot of great advice on where to go from here what to practice and what to learn next Since then I have been really enjoying finally being able to dig into the stuff I want to learn myself I ve found a course on edX on Web Accessibility and it s my first step toward hopefully obtaining a certification from the IAAP I ve also been focusing more on the data structures and algorithms problems provided as part of the post work And I ve started learning TypeScript since it keeps coming up alongside JavaScript in a lot of job postings Flatiron taught me a lot and gave me a good foundation for learning more in the future Now that I have experience with a lot of the major programming concepts I can pick up where Flatiron left off on my own and shape my knowledge to fit my personal goals It would have been nice to have a more up to date education especially when it comes to functional programming in React or an introduction to Redux ToolKit but I have the skills now to learn that stuff on my own And I m looking forward to doing it Today I am going to declare my job search start date I have already started applying for different positions and I am looking forward to rejoining the workforce this year Wish me luck 2022-01-05 14:23:01
海外TECH DEV Community Tiny details of web design - Part One https://dev.to/ironcladdev/tiny-details-of-web-design-part-one-23eb Tiny details of web design Part OneTo be able to create a stunningly amazing User Interface is challenging even if you ve been doing it for a while To be honest the hardest part of building a website is coming up with a design for it In this tutorial I m going to show you tons of tips on how to improve your css code and make your website as polished as a diamond Let s get started Style your ParagraphsYou see paragraphs in literally of all websites on the internet They may not seem like much but in fact they are one of the most important elements on your site If you make ugly paragraphs a user will automatically just scroll past them whereas if you make them look amazing users will keep going There are five seriously important aspects of paragraphs I ll go over in this section which are Colors Spacing Dimensions Size and Font ColorsThe number one thing I ll make sure to go for is make sure my paragraph s color contrast isn t too high If your paragraph is over a white background set it to a dark grey color If it is on a black background make it a light grey Try not to make the colors pure white or black Also no matter how drastic your website s colors are you should always use a monochromatic color Colored text usually go for headers links and other things a user should click on SpacingIf a paragraph is super compacted it looks longer and will drive a user away from reading it Even if a spaced out paragraph is in reality taller than a scrunched up paragraph it looks more readable and doesn t make you want to not read it as much Also try your best to use more paragraphs rather than less The more space between text I don t mean massive amounts the more readable they look DimensionsTake a look and observe a few websites You usually won t see paragraphs as wide as the entire view width Try using the max width css property to control the width of your paragraphs preferably from pixels wide Also make sure to keep some padding margin on the sides of the paragraph SizeToo small a font size makes your paragraphs look really long whereas too large a size makes your paragraphs look like garbage I typically will choose a font size of px for larger screens and shrink it down to px at smallest for smaller screens FontTypically you will see a serif or sans serif type font for paragraphs Never use a cursive or handwriting font for your paragraphs unless you want an angry web developer coming after you that s me of course That s it for paragraphs I hope you pay a bit more attention to the small details Choosing the right font usually takes me about minutes since I have to find the right one Most of the time if I can t find a good sans serif font I ll use Open Sans Montserrat or Raleway all of which are google fonts Clean Looking HeadersHeaders can mean a lot of things Since I went over a bunch of things in the previous section on paragraphs I ll keep this a bit shorter Some things you ll have to pay attention to are the space around the header alignment font and size SpacingTypically a header should have some space above it preferably from pixels Also make sure it has a decent about of space below it so that it doesn t appear to cram into the content below it so much AlignmentIt s difficult when to decide about aligning your headers to Left and when to align it to Center When should you do each one If you are writing a blog post a page with a lot of content or a page with over headers it s best to align them to Left If you have a smaller amount of headers on a single page it s better that you align them to center Rarely should you ever have to align them to the right Font and SizeTry to have either a super clean and polished font for headers or a cursivey handwriting like font depending on what your site is Try your best to make the font for headers differ from the one you use for paragraphs As for size try to make h h and h headers larger than default from sizes em h to em Headers mean large text You have to take that seriously Headers also play a very important part in web design They express the theme of your website so make sure to get them correct InputsInputs There are almost unlimited ways to style them Their default style is not something you should be using in your site Let s go over some aspects you ll need to make them look super professional ColorsTypically inputs should have a light border around them and be easily visible in terms of contrast You wouldn t want a user to miss an input due to lack of border Dimensions amp PositioningInputs should have a reasonable amount of padding and be restricted in size as well as positioned nicely A super long input could totally trash your site s design as well as an input with minimal padding AnimationsThere are many CSS techniques you can use for event actions on an input such as focus hover active invalid valid and more Make sure you add a short animation preferably of a second or less on each action If you are making a website involving logins signups and other things that require inputs make sure to style them nicely for the people that use your website Use a large paletteIt doesn t matter if you use a lot of colors just make sure they look nice together Make sure you use css variables for them so you don t get them mixed up Define at least shades of a certain color so that you can use them to describe the depths of each element If your site has a lot of content involved in it you ll need to use a bunch of colors to a certain extent defining CSS variables root background strongest rgb background strong rgb using CSS variables container background var background strongest Make sure you use the var function in css ButtonsThese sweet little html entities you can literally click buttons until the day you die of all different sorts but what lies behind these that makes people want to click them A stylish signup or subscribe button is more likely to make a user click that than a badly designed button How can you add this invisible bait to your site Similar to inputs make sure it has a decent amount of padding an absolutely smooth and beautiful hover animation and a good contrast If you balance these elements correctly you can literally make a button cry out to a user to click them Well that s it for this article I hope you enjoyed it Stay tuned for part two If you ve enjoyed this post be sure to follow me and join my discord 2022-01-05 14:21:30
海外TECH DEV Community How take a screenshot with Puppeteer https://dev.to/krasun/how-take-a-screenshot-with-puppeteer-39eg How take a screenshot with PuppeteerMaking screenshots of the websites with Puppeteer can be tricky A lot of pitfalls wait for us Let s examine Puppeteer on a set of screenshotting problems and tackle arising pitfalls I posted worked Puppeteer examples to understand the context of the solution better and copy it if needed Meet PuppeteerIt is a Node library that interacts with browsers that support Chrome DevTools Protocol CDP It is not only Chrome and Chromium but Firefox also has partial support of CDP The Chrome DevTools Protocol was developed to manage debug and inspect Chromium and Chrome at the low level So think of Puppeteer high level API over Chrome DevTools Protocol which allows you to do everything in the browser that you can do manually Extract data from a SPA submit a form type text perform end to end UI testing and other automation related tasks Debug performance issues Run debug and test Chrome Extensions Pre render SPA to make a static site But for Google SEO it does not matter since Google renders JavaScript for every page nowadays And guess what Make screenshots and PDFs of pages Generating Screenshots and PDFs with Puppeteer is the main focus of the post Puppeteer architecture and internals for curiousYou can skip this section It is not required to start using the library But I love to explore the internals of the libraries I use and so might you Lightweight option of PuppeteerFirst of all there are two versions of the library available puppeteer core and puppeteer You should use puppeteer core when you are going to manage browser instances by yourself or you do not need it otherwise stick to puppeteer Three simple examples that come to my mind with puppeteer core You are using CDP from the extension so you do not have to download Chrome or Chromium You want to use a different Chrome Chromium or Firefox build You have a running cluster of browsers or a separate browser instance on an other machine When you use puppeteer core you must ensure that you use a compatible browser version But the puppeteer library downloads and runs a compatible version of Chromium instance for you without any worries Puppeteer AlternativesThere are a lot more but the most popular two are The oldest alternative to make screenshots is using the Selenium WebDriver protocol The second one is Playwright and it is a good one It is the competitor to the Puppeteer Playwright and Puppeteer have compatible API but Playwright supports more browsers So if you must take screenshots in different browsers prefer to use Playwright By the way top contributors of the Puppeteer work on Playwright But the library is still considered new Practical Examples of using Puppeteer to take screenshotsBefore starting to work with Puppeteer let s install it using npm npm i puppeteer A simple screenshotTo take a simple screenshot with Puppeteer and save it into the file you can use the following code use strict const puppeteer require puppeteer async gt    const browser await puppeteer launch    try        const page await browser newPage        await page goto        await page screenshot path example png     catch e        console log e     finally        await browser close     Always close the browser to avoid resource leaking Resolution and Retina DisplayTo avoid blurred images on a high resolution display like Retina Display you can change the viewport properties width height and deviceScaleFactor use strict const puppeteer require puppeteer async gt    const browser await puppeteer launch    try        const page await browser newPage        await page setViewport            width default            height default            deviceScaleFactor default                await page goto        await page screenshot path apple com png     catch e        console log e     finally        await browser close     That s called pixel perfect screenshots A full page screenshotPuppeteer knows how to make screenshot of the scrollable page Use fullPage option use strict const puppeteer require puppeteer async gt    const browser await puppeteer launch    try        const page await browser newPage        await page goto        await page screenshot path apple com png fullPage true     catch e        console log e     finally        await browser close     But it won t work with infinite scroll A full page screenshot with infinite scrollIt is out of the scope for the article but it is hard to find the case when you need to make screenshots with infinite scroll sites And if you need to you can use the next algorithm Load the page wait until it is loaded Scrolling until there the size of the page is not changed Take the screenshot If you try to do it with Twitter or Instagram for account that has a lot of posts you absolutely will end up with crashed browser instance due to the memory exhaustion Wait until the page is completely loadedIt is a good practice to wait until the page is completely loaded to make screenshot use strict const puppeteer require puppeteer async gt    const browser await puppeteer launch    try        const page await browser newPage        await page goto            waitUntil networkidle                await page screenshot path apple com png     catch e        console log e     finally        await browser close     It is a little bit of magic but networkidle event is heuristic to determine page load state The Puppeteer team finds it working quite well for many real world use cases But if you need to wait until some element is rendered and visible you need to add Page waitForSelector use strict const puppeteer require puppeteer async gt    const browser await puppeteer launch    try        const page await browser newPage        await page goto            waitUntil networkidle                const selector div        await page waitForSelector selector            visible true                await page screenshot path example com png     catch e        console log e     finally        await browser close     You can also wait for selector or function or timeout for file chooser for frame for function for navigation for network idle for request for response for selector for timeout and for XPath A screenshot of the page areaTo take the screenshot of the page area use the clip option use strict const puppeteer require puppeteer async gt    const browser await puppeteer launch    try        const page await browser newPage        await page goto        await page screenshot            path apple com png            clip                x                y                width                height                         catch e        console log e     finally        await browser close     But if you need to take a screenshot of the element there is a better approach A screenshot of the specific elementPuppeteer allows to take the screenshot of any element on the web page use strict const puppeteer require puppeteer async gt    const browser await puppeteer launch    try        const page await browser newPage        await page goto        const selector body gt div first child        await page waitForSelector selector        const element await page selector        await element screenshot            path example com png                         catch e        console log e     finally        await browser close     As you see it is essential to make sure that the element is ready A screenshot with transparent backgroundPuppeteer provides a useful option to omit the background of the site Just set omitBackground to true use strict const puppeteer require puppeteer async gt    const browser await puppeteer launch    try        const page await browser newPage        await page goto        await page screenshot            path example com png            omitBackground true                         catch e        console log e     finally        await browser close     Have you run the code If yes you spotted that the screenshot does not have a transparent background It happens because omitting background works only for elements with transparent background  So if your target site does not have a transparent background and you want to force it you can use JavaScript to accomplish the task Change the background of the body in the evaluate function use strict const puppeteer require puppeteer async gt    const browser await puppeteer launch    try        const page await browser newPage        await page goto        await page evaluate gt                        document body style background transparent                await page screenshot            path example com png            omitBackground true                         catch e        console log e     finally        await browser close     Screenshot as BaseYou build Puppeteer as a service and do not want to store screenshot files You can choose to return the screenshot in Base encoding format use strict const puppeteer require puppeteer async gt    const browser await puppeteer launch    try        const page await browser newPage        await page goto        const base await page screenshot encoding base        console log base     catch e        console log e     finally        await browser close     You will receive a string that you can share with another service or even store somewhere Generate PDF instead of PNGIt is relatively easy to generate PDF instead of PNG use strict const puppeteer require puppeteer async gt    const browser await puppeteer launch    try        const page await browser newPage        await page goto            waitUntil networkidle                const selector div        await page waitForSelector selector            visible true                await page pdf path example com pdf format a             catch e        console log e     finally        await browser close     Look at all possible Puppeteer PDF options It is an exciting and complex problem which deserves a separate post  It depends on your use case but also consider using PDFKit for programmatic PDF generation Blocking ads when using PuppeteerI do not use any ad blocking extension because life is tough and everybody needs some way to earn money If I can help sites sustain and survive by non blocking the ads I will do it But when you test your site or your customer site you might need to block the ads There are ways to do it Intercept and block request that load ad into the site Use an extension that is optimized exactly to solve this problem The first one is tricky and highly depends on the site you are taking screenshots of But using an extension is a highly scalable approach that works out of the box Install puppeteer extra and puppeteer extra plugin adblocker in addition to puppeteer package npm i puppeteer extra puppeteer extra plugin adblockerAnd then use it use strict const puppeteer require puppeteer extra const AdblockerPlugin require puppeteer extra plugin adblocker puppeteer use AdblockerPlugin async gt    const browser await puppeteer launch    try        const page await browser newPage         ads are blocked automatically        await page goto        await page screenshot            path example com png            fullPage true             catch e        console log e     finally        await browser close     Most pages include ads and trackers which consume a lot of bandwidth and take a long time to load Because fewer requests are made and less JavaScript is performed when advertisements and trackers are blocked pages load substantially quicker Block trackersTo take screenshots faster you might block trackers It will help to speed up rendering The ad blocking plugin can help us with this issue Do not forget to install puppeteer extra and puppeteer extra plugin adblocker in addition to puppeteer package npm i puppeteer extra puppeteer extra plugin adblockerAnd then use it use strict const puppeteer require puppeteer extra const AdblockerPlugin require puppeteer extra plugin adblocker puppeteer use AdblockerPlugin    blockTrackers true default false async gt    const browser await puppeteer launch    try        const page await browser newPage         ads are blocked automatically        await page goto        await page screenshot            path example com png            fullPage true             catch e        console log e     finally        await browser close     If you need to block only trackers but do not block ads just use request interceptor Preventing Puppeteer detectionSome sites might block your Puppeteer script because of the user agent and it is easy to fix use strict const puppeteer require puppeteer async gt        const options        args             user agent Mozilla Macintosh Intel Mac OS X AppleWebKit KHTML like Gecko Chrome Safari                headless true        const browser await puppeteer launch options    try        const page await browser newPage        await page goto        await page screenshot            path example com png            fullPage true             catch e        console log e     finally        await browser close     There are also many other hacks to ensure that Puppeteer is not detected but you can save time by using the ready puppeteer extra plugin stealth plugin for the stealth mode Install it in addition to puppeteer package npm i puppeteer extra puppeteer extra plugin stealthAnd then use use strict const puppeteer require puppeteer extra const StealthPlugin require puppeteer extra plugin stealth puppeteer use StealthPlugin async gt    const browser await puppeteer launch    try        const page await browser newPage                await page evaluateOnNewDocument gt            const newProto navigator proto            delete newProto webdriver            navigator proto newProto                await page goto                await page waitForTimeout        await page screenshot path stealth png fullPage true     catch e        console log e     finally        await browser close     Important As you see I remove the webdriver property since the stealth plugin misses this hack and by using webdriver property usage of the Puppeteer can be detected Hide cookies bannersIt is a tricky task to implement generically but you can accept a cookie by finding the selector of the Accept or reject button and clicking on it Using basic access authentication with PuppeteerIf your page is protected by HTTP basic access authentication the only thing you need to do is to specify username and password before loading and taking the screenshot of the page use strict const puppeteer require puppeteer async gt    const browser await puppeteer launch    try        const page await browser newPage        await page authenticate username YOUR BASIC AUTH USERNAME password YOUR BASIC AUTH PASSWORD        await page goto        await page screenshot path example png     catch e        console log e     finally        await browser close     Using a proxy for PuppeteerIn case if you need to use a proxy to make a screenshot with Puppeteer you can specify a browser wide proxy const puppeteer require puppeteer async gt    const browser await puppeteer launch        args proxy server        try        const page await browser newPage        await page goto            waitUntil networkidle                await page screenshot path example com png     catch e        console log e     finally        await browser close     But in some cases you might want to use a page wide proxy without recreating the browser instance In this case you can install puppeteer page proxy npm i puppeteer page proxyAnd use it specify proxy on per page basis const puppeteer require puppeteer const useProxy require puppeteer page proxy async gt    const browser await puppeteer launch    try        const page await browser newPage        useProxy page        await page goto            waitUntil networkidle                await page screenshot path example com png     catch e        console log e     finally        await browser close     Add support of emojis Japanese Arabic and other non Latin languages to PuppeteerIf you run Puppeteer in OS without emojis support you need to install OS wide fonts to support emojis The same can happen with non English characters like Chinese Japanese Korean Arabic Hebrew etc To get Puppeteer to render emojis you can use Noto Fonts published under SIL Open Font License OFL v You need to search and how to install fonts for your host OS Have a nice day I posted a lot of Puppeteer examples and I hope I helped you solve your screenshot problems with Puppeteer I described every problem I encountered and the solution to it 2022-01-05 14:17:43
