My American gf Japanese American but born and raised in Japan has mental health issuesBackground I did two years in high school and currently attend undergrad in Japan I have lived here for a total of years but have been learning Japanese since I was and am good enough with the language to do anything in Japanese but dont understand the culture at as a deep level My gf almost always speaks English to me up until now see below Until recently my gf has never displayed any outward signs of mental illness She has lots of friends and seems to be working toward her Phd in physics without major issues She goes hiking climbing with me and even skiing and has always seemed to have even more energy than I do She s super high energy and cheerful and until recently we never had any major fights or arguments and I honestly found no problems with her behavior That said it recently surfaced that she cheated on me with my best friend When I finally confronted her about it she admitted everything and seemed to have a complete mental breakdown She never cries but she was shaking and screaming and just going crazy to the point I feared her neighbors would call the police Oh and now she is only speaking Japanese about this and will not speak any English anymore for the last hours……she is completely bilingual but I m better in English so I think we should use English but she won t If I speak English she just replies in Japanese I ve NEVER seen her act like this before so i am shocked Then she broke it to me that she has a very severe mental illness it s actually been diagnosed and she says she ll show me some paperwork when she s ready so it s impossible that it s made up… Apparently it had been under control for years but recently it got outta control she says That said she says she needs more time before she can tell me what it is because it s one of the most stigmatized mental illnesses around and her last bf actually dumped her over it I recommended we go for relationship therapy because she hid her mental health condition and cheated on me and I clearly didn t provide her with the trust in me to talk to me about her mental health issue earlier She said that she would consider but she would be embarrassed to speak to a third party about her cheating… but considering there is a mental health issue involved I think we need professional help… My questions do any of you have experience with dating a Japanese person with a mental illness who a has cheated on you If so was getting their mental illness under control able to completely stop the cheating does her story that before it was under control for the last couple years but recently flared up check out Why wouldn t she get proper treatment when it flared up how should I get her to tell me what her condition is and convince her to come to therapy with me PLEASE DO NOT SAY I SHOULD BREAK UP WITH HER I already made my mind up so please advices premised on staying together only thanks… This is not a question of if I should stay with her Thanks for the help submitted by u Tokyo Stories to r japanlife link comments |
