海外TECH DEV Community Web 3.0 & blockchain - how they work together https://dev.to/stanleyugwu/web-30-blockchain-how-they-work-together-1191 Web amp blockchain how they work togetherHello guys In this post we ll be looking into the web and internet the problems of the current web blockchains web and how web and blockchains works together Let s dive in What is internetInternet is a decentralised network of computers interconnected together for different purposes This purposes are defined by what we the users of internet use it for example communication providing services watching videos playing games etc Then what is Web World Wide Web WThe World Wide Web or Web or W was invented by Sir Tim Berners Lee in as a system of information communication built on top of the internet where information is communicated through webpages made of HTML Hypertext Markup Language and other web resources like images documents all delivered by a web server and rendered by the web browser and interlink to one another via hyperlinks The Web is just one way of information communication that relies on the internet Email is another way in which information meant for a specific user identified by an email address is sent to an email server which then relays the information to the identified user s email client The internet and the web from their origins has been decentralised in nature No one one entity controlled most of it Anonymity and privacy was built into its nature users would dial up to a specific server to get or share information and that s all no data tracking no data privacy violation no data black markets But as the web and internet evolved innovations and improvements came in some companies dominated the web space and so did issues and problems Let s talk about the problems a bit CentralisationCentralisation in itself is not a problems as it has its advantages But it turns out the disadvantages are more critical Because a handful of companies now own larger portions of the services that run on the internet they have more control Google for example has services that run on the internet and with very large user and data base think Gmail Google cloud Google Search Engine etc Same is true for other companies like Facebook think WhatsApp Instagram They ve dominated almost the entire space and it s now almost impossible to compete with them as they consistently buy out or copy features of other growing services which means more control and data So what happens is that they re in control of most of the data people put out on the web and internet at large and as such centralisation and it s disadvantages have come in picture The following problems have emerged They decide what to do with your data They do what they like on the space as nothing can stop them They control what you can do on the internet since they re the providers of most of the services you use They experience outages and downtimes in which case there s almost nothing else you can do except wait As all the data is stored in one place attacks are attracted so your data may end up in the wrong hands You can t really compete with them on the space as they have the resources to buy you out or copy you when you walk in their steps Because they run a centralised architecture when they experience outages or server failures all the websites and softwares that depends on their services stops working The SolutionWith all the above problems the solution to most of it would be to decentralise the Web we have now and that s what Web or web has come to do and in a moment we ll understand how Based on the history of internet and how the Web has being used the Web can be split into two generations or eras Web This is the era of the beginning of internet when the web mostly consisted of static webpages that the user just read information from No interaction Only the website owners created information and the web was decentralised at this time It s also called reading era Web This is the era we are in now The era where interactivity has being incorporated into the web Now users can read and as well as create contents on the web It s the social interaction era It s also called reading and writing era It s in this era that all the above problems have emerged because of centralisation by the big players And now the third era Web has kicked off This is a new era of the web This era is supposed to deliver the web from the shackles of the disadvantages of centralisation and solve alot of the problems web is facing currently like ones mentioned above Web is an idea for a new iteration of the web based on blockchain technology Because of how blockchain works it ll be the backbone of web let s see how So what is BlockchainBlockchain is a network of peer peer connected computers aka nodes where each node maintains and updates a copy of a distributed ledger or record which is synced across the network Blockchain is much like every other network that forms the internet except that in this network they share a record of data among the computers nodes on the network and each node can update the record When the record is updated by a node the updated record is then shared across the other nodes which means at each point all the nodes has to have an up to date version of the record Blockchain network is said to be decentralised because there s no central control of the network If one node goes down the other nodes will still be active And other nodes can freely join the network The record or ledger shared on the blockchain is also decentralised because there s no single source of truth All the nodes are sources of truths Each node has up to date version of the record It s because of the decentralised nature of blockchain along with the features that decentralisation brings like transparency and security that Web would be based on it There s more Adding to the decentralisation of blockchains some blockchains also allow for running codes on the network They allow computer codes to be added to the network s record and those codes would be executed on call inside one computer node on the network These codes are called smart contracts and amazingly these smart contracts can read write data to the shared record ledger on that network These are what makes web amazing In web things still look same as in web web browsers would still be used to access apps on the web apps can still have backend and frontends webpages will still be made up of HTML you can still use regular frontend libraries and frameworks But in web though apps are now called dApps decentralised apps and their backend codes would be smart contracts which will run on the blockchain This is why they re called dApps SummaryThe fact that dApps have their backend codes running on a decentralised network blockchain paves the way for new ideas opportunities and innovations Your dApp can leverage on that feat and shock the world Thanks for reading and your corrections are welcomed 2022-02-16 15:34:57
海外TECH DEV Community You’re Doing It Wrong — Recruiting a DevRel https://dev.to/codenameone/youre-doing-it-wrong-recruiting-a-devrel-4bdn You re Doing It Wrong ーRecruiting a DevRelThis article was co written with Wesley Faulkner Wesley Faulkner is a first generation American public speaker and podcaster He is a founding member of the government transparency group Open Austin and a staunch supporter of racial justice workplace equity and neurodiversity His professional experience spans technology from AMD Atlassian Dell IBM and MongoDB Wesley currently works as a head of community at SingleStore and in addition co hosts the developer relations focused podcast Community Pulse and serves on the board for SXSW The DevRel collective is a community where people in the developer relations field can chat and help each other out But this post isn t about that group…We ll get to that This is an article about you the startup founder or manager who s trying to hire your first developer relations person This article is here to help you by example I m not the first to write about this problem Taylor Barnett wrote a great piece on this as well Be sure to check it out But first let s make sure we have the terminology right Developer Relations is a field that encapsulates all the different roles that facilitate the communication between an organization and third party developers That can include a developer advocate such as myself a developer evangelist community manager and much more But getting started is pretty hard How It StartedWesley Faulkner started this by opening this thread on the DevRel collective community Slack “Hey y all I need a temperature check I m getting a lot of LinkedIn solicitations for first developer advocate roles Here s just a snippet of the last one I got With that we are looking for our first Developer Advocate to create our Developer Relations strategy from scratch There s no set playbook but you ll thrive in this role if you re passionate about educating developers His response to this was “Thank you for reaching out but I m not interested at this time Hiring someone to execute and do strategy is really hard Time and time again I ve seen this go south in a hurry and no one wins in that situation If you review the job description it is heavily biased towards action With a first role there s a lot to do and without focus and direction the results will not only seem scattered externally but internally as well It s as if you wake up in a field and want to get out so you bolt off in a direction Then it feels like you re going nowhere so you turn around and go in the opposite direction All that work and time gets wasted My suggestion is to create a solid strategy and direction before getting someone to execute it You could even hire a contractor or consultant to help with that Better yet make that the first role you hire You wouldn t open a restaurant with just servers on staff would you You would get a manager to make sure that all tasks are delegated responsibly Why wouldn t you take that same approach with DevRel I Shai am currently the first developer advocate at Lightrun and I can very much empathize with those sentiments What Do You Do A former boss of mine is running an open source company without a DevRel person He asked for my help so I popped into a Zoom meeting with them It was clear they felt uncomfortable asking this but it s the obvious question “What do you do What Does a Developer Advocate Do I can answer this about my job but I can t provide an answer for other developer advocates or developer relations The reason is that our jobs vary too much and include a lot of flexibility An open source company that targets big data will have completely different needs from a close source enterprise debugging tool The job of a developer relations advocate in both companies can be completely different As a result a perfect candidate for the job at Company A might be a terrible candidate for the job at Company B How Do You Begin With Lightrun our founders interviewed a lot of developer relations people This didn t take off Part of this is the huge demand we have in the market right now We re getting a lot of solicitation over LinkedIn by just having that job title But another part is the vagueness of our job descriptions If I m considering a job I d like to know that I ll be able to do it I d like to know what it would require Unfortunately that s something the employer needs to define for the employee…Not the other way around Lightrun solved this problem by hiring me Since I was already a part of the team I understood the product I m a company founder and effectively did developer relations for years in one way or another we just didn t call it that Since I know what s needed and understand the company culture I could draw up a plan and decide what needs to be done When we grow this activity additional DevRel staff can fit into the framework I m constructing here and improve it with their experience Right now with the proverbial “blank slate I very much feel the words Wesley wrote about and can understand why people don t want to be the first developer relations person in a company Founder in DevRel Most companies don t have an experienced person on staff already But most have a technical founder When reaching out to developers a lot of the founders do this in an ad hoc way You post to Reddit or set up a blog and try to get some developers to use the product That s all great and could be the starting point for a developer relations role within the company But the trick is to turn this into something that s more strategic and actionable Are you hiring a developer relations person just to write blog posts Where can that person contribute What are reasonable KPIs What would the day of a developer relations person at your company look like What s the chain of command Is marketing in charge or is it the CTO If you can t answer these basic questions you don t have the infrastructure in place to hire a developer relations person You can hire the “best person out there and be disappointed because they won t know what to do I know a lot is thrown on the shoulders of founders but if you re a BD business to developer company then you pretty much need to understand the role in depth Otherwise you ll have a hard time managing and evaluating the work of the developer relations person Some Other ThoughtsWesley s thread struck a serious nerve in the community with responses Here are some highlights which I think are the perfect TLDR for this post “The inevitable reaction in these situations months in is either You ve gotten great results from your efforts but we re not seeing the vision or the strategy part done Maybe you re not the one to do that part Or you focused on the strategy portion so you get Nice execution on the strategy but we re just not seeing the results on the ground Maybe DevRel doesn t actually work It is an absolute strategy for failure ーDavid G Simmons“I ve seen a number of these first hires fail this summer and now the engineers first advocates themselves feel imposter syndrome and otherwise about DevRel And it was the stakeholders fault for not having their strategy known to their hire ーTessa Kriesel“This is a well articulated response with understandable examples VP of Eng Mkt should do a lot of legwork in these small companies on that strategy piece BEFORE hiring the first DevRel ーDewan Ahmed“It s been a different experience for me As a first devrel at CURJOB I had a lot of existing trust with the founder exec team and executing on a couple of tactical things docs tutorials forum helped build some credibility The main strategic goal when I was hired was get more pageviews though since then it has been refined since “We ve been working toward a strategy but one hard thing about a strategy at a small company is that it is difficult to formulate It s hard to do internally to make the time and hard to know who to trust to come in and consult It s hard to find the right fit esp when you are still trying to do the tactical stuff at the same time “I doubt I would have had the same success without the deep trust I had with the founder ーDan MooreOriginally published at The New Stack 2022-02-16 15:25:37

alternativesOnce you ve made the decision that you don t want to allocate of the dev time on building and maintaining back office tools it s time to choose the perfect solution In fact you have a few possibilities Pick one of the admin panel templates that are easy to find online They are often free and very easy to install but they come with limitations The idea behind them is to fit the most common needs and there is very little or no customization available Take advantage of open source admin frameworks and libraries Their pros Much more flexibility and customization compared to the templates they re also free to use Cons Setting them up and making edits still requires quite a lot of dev work even if less than budding a back office solution from scratch They can t be customized by non tech team members Try Forest Admin as it gives you the best of both worlds The fundamental features like CRUD operations search filters dashboards or export are available out of the box but you 海外TECH Engadget The best podcasting gear for beginners https://www.engadget.com/2020-02-14-the-best-podcasting-gear-for-beginners.html?src=rss The best podcasting gear for beginnersStarting a podcast is easy Making one that actually sounds good is another story entirely We can t help much with the bigger problems facing would be podcasters ーfinding a good topic and getting people to listen ーbut we can point you to the best gear to get started With a few smart purchases you too can sound like a podcast pro Get a decent microphoneYou need a good microphone There s no arguing with this It doesn t matter if you re starting your own show or planning to guest on someone else s podcast A great microphone will elevate your voice to help you get the sort of depth and richness you hear on the radio and popular shows like Radiolab While you could record with your phone or your PC s webcam mic in a pinch nobody wants to hear that every week We strongly suggest starting with a solid USB microphone They can connect easily to any computer or even phones and tablets with a dongle and they ll offer a huge leap in sound quality Previously we ve recommended the Blue Yeti as the ideal beginner mic It s easy to use and sounds great for the price But it s also a condenser microphone which means it s not great for the noisy environments most newfound podcasters are recording in So this year we re suggesting you jump straight to an inexpensive dynamic microphone like the Audio Technica ATR X Buy Blue Yeti at Amazon Buy Audio Technica ATR X at Amazon Dynamic microphones do a better job of isolating your voice and cutting out background noise ーthe only downside is that you need to speak close to it like a radio host The ATR X also has USB C and XLR connections which means you can easily bring it over to a more professional audio interface down the line or drag it along to a friend s studio There are cheaper USB microphones out there like Blue s Snowball and AmazonBasics Mini Condenser but you ll pay for going cheap with noisier recordings If you re serious about podcasting it s worth spending a bit more up front There s a good chance you ll end up chucking a cheaper mic once you hear the difference Buy Blue Snowball at Amazon Buy AmazonBasics Mini Condenser at Amazon Pro tip RTFMYou should actually read the instructions and make sure you know what every dial and button does Most importantly make sure you re speaking in the right direction With most microphones including the Blue Yeti you want to aim at the side with the brand label Some models like the ATRX and other dynamic mics need to be addressed from the top Yes I know this all sounds basic but I ve encountered dozens of people who end up aiming for the wrong part of their mics when they re getting started It s also worth picking up a few accessories to make your recordings sound great Get a pop filter or foam cover to avoid plosives that annoying titutal pop when you make quot p quot sounds If you re going to be recording regularly it s worth investing in a tabletop arm to hold your mic in an optimal position and also avoid the extra noise you get from desktop stands You could of course start exploring more expensive microphone options but I d suggest holding off on those until you re more committed to the podcasting life The next big level up from USB options is the world of XLR microphones the same interface used for professional audio gear You ll also need a USB audio interface like the Tascam US x or FocusRite Scarlett i to connect those mics to your computer At that point you can start looking at higher end options like the Rode Procaster It sounds noticeably richer than the Yeti and since it s a dynamic microphone it s also better at cutting out unwanted noise Here s some advice You can save quite a bit by buying all this equipment used or refurbished I saved on the excellent Shure PG USB microphone years ago by going through eBay Buy FocusRite Scarlett i at Amazon Buy Rode Procaster at Amazon Choose your audio editing weaponsNow that you have the hardware you need some software to put your show together There s no avoiding this part You need to learn the basics of audio editing Luckily there s Audacity a free open source audio editor that works across every computing platform Its UI is ugly and a bit archaic but it s also pretty powerful once you get a handle on it I ve edited all of my shows with Audacity and aside from a few annoying crashes and quirks it suits my needs well If you re looking for something more robust or you grow tired of Audacity the free version of AVID s Pro Tools is worth a look and there s Reaper by Winamp creator Justin Frankel They re both full fledged digital audio workstations DAW and Reaper also has the bonus of working with plenty of tools and plug ins At the high end of the spectrum there s Adobe Audition but at per month or for the year it s not worth considering until podcasting has become your life Get good headphonesHeadphones are the best way to monitor your recordings ーthat is to hear yourself as you re recording ーas well as to make sure they sound great once completed You ll definitely want something better than the earbuds that came with your phones We recommend starting with something like Sony s MDR a pair of over the ear headphones that have been studio mainstays for decades They offer a neutral sound and a light fit exactly what you ll need for hours of editing If you ve already picked up a pair of great headphones those will work fine Be sure to turn off any noise canceling features though as they can color what you re hearing while monitoring recordings We re not going to go down the rabbit hole of recommending large speakers like you d find in a real studio They re not worth it for podcast editing and most people will be listening to your show with headphones anyway Of course if you make something that sounds great on headphones it ll probably be fine on speakers Buy Sony MDR at Amazon Prep your recording altarYou can t just set up your fancy new microphone anywhere You ll want to find a room that s as quiet as possible or even a small closet If both of those options are out carve out some space in the corner or along a wall of a larger room Wherever you set up you ll need to treat your space a bit with some foam wedges or other sound absorbing objects You can always go the simple route Drape a curtain or blanket over your desk to create an isolated sound dampened spot Learn how to record with friendsSo now you re all set to record a podcast on your own But how do you bring in a co host or guest That s where things get a bit complicated You could chat with a friend over Skype and record their audio using something like Total Recorder on Windows or Soundflower on Mac You ll want to make sure the other person is also aiming for the best audio quality with a high quality mic In a pinch you can have a guest record a voice memo on their phone but be sure to follow NPR s phone recording guidelines To simplify remote group recordings you could consider web based services like Zencastr and Cast which automatically capture high quality local audio They ll get you better quality than a Skype recording since you re not dealing with compressed audio from your guests These services let you quickly edit and process recordings online as well While they may sound like podcasting heaven there are issues to watch out for Network interruptions could easily render a session useless and they re demanding on systems with minimal RAM If you go this route be sure to have backup recordings For the most control your co host can record their side of the conversation on their end and send it to you afterward This obviously introduces additional layers of complexity like making sure your audio stays synchronized throughout the whole recording It s also tougher to edit since you re juggling multiple files on a timeline instead of one But honestly the quality bump is worth it If you re looking to hone your audio editing skills there are online tutorials like this Udemy course or YouTube instructional videos Recording with another person physically near you is a bit tougher Some mics like the Blue Yeti have modes for shared recording Otherwise you ll need to get a USB audio interface to plug multiple XLR mics into your computer If you re going that route you ll have to be extra careful about avoiding crossover recordings on those mics If you re looking to record interviews on the go nab a digital audio recorder like the Zoom Hn and a few mics like Rode s Lavalier Go Since it won t sound nearly as good as a home setup I wouldn t recommend this as your main recording method unless you invest in a powerful recorder with support for pro grade XLR mics Buy Zoom Hn at Amazon Buy Rode Lavalier Go at Amazon Choose a podcasting serviceOnce you ve locked in an episode or two it s time to start exploring podcast hosts These will host your files give you a feed you can subscribe to in any podcast app and usually help you list your show on iTunes Spotify and other services Most important you can get some detailed analytics from hosts and if you get popular enough they can also help you nab some sponsorships You can get started for free with Acast per month with Libsyn or per month with Audioboom Photos avdyachenko Mic Cisco Cisco Blog Disaggregating Memory May be the Most Exciting Trend for Computing System Design Right Now https://blogs.cisco.com/datacenter/disaggregating-memory-may-be-the-most-exciting-trend-for-computing-system-design-right-now Disaggregating Memory May be the Most Exciting Trend for Computing System Design Right NowJust throwing more resources at difficult and complex challenges in high performance computing design willy nilly can often be an inefficient solution If the resources are not used smartly and efficiently it can lead to a lot of waste and excess A relevant example is internal storage in computing systems In my first blog in this three part series I discussed the rapid growth of key performance metrics across CPU GPU cores memory network throughput storage capacity and peripheral interconnects These numbers certainly attest to the sheer scale that the compute industry is willing to throw at the problem of how to support the explosion of workloads and applications that we are experiencing with the mainstream adoption of cloud mobile and social technologies In this second blog in the series I talk about how memory upgrades in high performance computing design today are changing the rules of the future of hardware game 2022-02-16 15:00:36
