Onboarding at Jobber is Fun? |
https://dev.to/jobber/onboarding-at-jobber-is-fun-5al7
|
Onboarding at Jobber is Fun Onboarding is a very common business experience A room full of people sharing their values and trying to get you up to speed as soon as possible on the way they do work It s nothing but slideshows videos whiteboards and values discussions with a snack if you re lucky It s a gruelling process that every company uses but it can be better You might be the one onboarded trying to keep your head above water and absorb all the information You care about this job and are trying to be a sponge and absorb everything you can Trying to get everything in your head so you can start to give back to this amazing company you ve joined You might be the one onboarding trying to shepherd a new and valued colleague through the process You re so excited for this new coworker and all the potential they represent You know that if you can teach them ten thousand things they ll be off to the races being a great member of the team Having been a member of more than a few onboardings over the years I can tell you what works and what doesn t Let s go over why the experience I had onboarding at Jobber was great and what that means for your own processes And to me that discussion starts with putting Everything in the Right Order Everything in the Right OrderAt Jobber there is lots to learn the company s values and focus on providing the best possible experience for our Service Providers SPs and their Service Customers SCs The different departments that make up the company And even all the strange wonderfulness of the company Slack That s not unique at Jobber either any long lived company will have lots to teach their new colleagues and a limited time to do it The best thing you can start with is to make sure you have an organized approach to this information If this information is a series of manuals you can expect that they won t retain much of that info At Jobber our consistency and structure comes from Welcome Mat our onboarding plan It s an amazing course that helps new Jobberinos learn everything they need to know about working here We break down everything you need to know into seven days of fun exciting learning You re thrown together with a cohort of people across the company to learn about this new adventure you re embarking upon And our fantastic people team at Jobber provides all the context required on the edges of the course Through the group meetings sharing sessions and structured learning the focus is clear and concise This makes it much more than a presentation read aloud by a host because it s Interactive Make it InteractivePresentations are effective at presenting information to a large group of people but they are bad at actually teaching We all have memories of schools with some professor droning on about some arcane topic You don t want that in your classroom and you don t want it in your boardroom either Instead move the focus from the presenter to those being presented to Use breakout sessions and other group activities to keep your new hires engaged with the content Rather than present answers to common questions tell them how to find it on their own During Welcome Mat we challenge our new hires to build the skills they ll need to answer their own questions How do I get in touch with the Success team What if I have computer troubles who do I reach out to What benefits do I have Rather than lay out the answers to these critical questions we ask them to go find them on their own This teaches them not only the answer to those questions but also where to go if you have any questions It s fun and interactive but it s focused at the same time Each day of the seven having its own theme and clear messaging on what you re expected to learn Every day begins by setting expectations and ends with a recap and further info This helps you dig more into anything you find particularly interesting It s never functional learning never “this is how you do your job but at Jobber each day focuses on the “Why Focus on the WhyWhen I went through the seven days of Welcome Mat the people team hosted activities that took me all over Jobber The emphasis was not on the information but on why the information was necessary You can teach someone about Sales part of Day Customers but why not focus on the benefit of your services and the needs of your customers That way your new hires will go and search out all that information on their own At every stage I found the meetings and activities tightly organized and focused on the why Before I had left I had an appreciation for all aspects of the company and how each part fit together It was clear how all the departments interacted and how everything laddered up into Jobber s vision For Jobber that vision starts with some guy named Graham Graham is the reason that I m even talking to you today He was Jobber s very first customer and learning about him is important enough that it happens on day one Our beloved SPs are so valuable to us that the conversation starts and ends with them We re bringing people and technology together to build stronger communities Our communities are built on the backs of small businesses so when small businesses win we all win When someone finishes your own welcome process they should be able to articulate your company s vision just as clearly This is your best chance to instill in your employees the Why that underpins why you do what you do Onboarding represents a critical opportunity to start from the right spot for the right reasons It s much harder to adjust things once they re out of that first boardroom For Jobber that means making sure everyone knows why we want to help change the world for small business owners everywhere That All Sounds AmazingIt is amazing It was a supportive organized wonderful experience I did promise you some tips and tricks for your own onboardings so I better live up to my promises and deliver I have the following recommendations to make your onboarding as awesome as Jobber s Organization Make sure your onboarding focuses on teaching the right things You ve got a limited amount of time to onboard someone make it count Keep It Interactive Put your new hires in cohorts have them learn about the company and about each other together This will help them engage with the work together and teach them how to find the answers they ll need Focus on the Why If you teach someone with a power point they ll only remember the snacks on the table If you instead focus on the why and get them excited about learning they ll learn it themselves That might seem like a lot of work to do and it is But think of it like an investment in your future employees The better organized interactive and rooted in your company s vision your onboarding is the more effective it will be And let me tell you again onboarding at Jobber is fun Onboarding at Jobber is Fun If all that sounds like the kind of onboarding experience you d like to have check out our careers page We re always looking for talented people of all backgrounds for a variety of roles I can promise you the onboarding experience at least is absolutely world class |

Let's debug a node.js app using the built-in debugger! |
https://dev.to/siddharthshyniben/lets-debug-a-nodejs-app-using-the-built-in-debugger-2o24
|
Let x s debug a node js app using the built in debugger It s about time we stop using console log to debug things While console are really powerful tools it s a pain to maintain Most of us can use our IDEs to debug code But did you know that Node js comes with a built in debugger It s a simple terminal based one but extremely powerful too Let s check it out by debugging a sample app using the built in debugger The codeThis is the simple program we are going to be debugging right now const numbers process argv const sum a b gt a b let out numbers reduce sum console log out If you are a seasoned developer you should have caught the bugs already But forget it Here s some sample output from this program node index js usr local Cellar node bin node Users mac Blog Code node debug index js Firing up the debugger Node js has two ways to start the debugger The first way is to run node inspect file js This starts a WebSocket connection to the debugger and clients can use this connection to debug the code The second way is to use the built in inspector client using node inspect file js note that it s a command now not a flag We can start the inspector for our app by running node inspect index js node inspect index js lt Debugger listening on ws c fe d c aaab lt For help see lt lt Debugger attached lt okBreak on start in index js gt const numbers process argv const sum a b gt a b let out numbers reduce sum debug gt This gives us a debug prompt where we can run commands to debug the code The basic ones are cont c Continue executionnext n Step nextstep s Step inout o Step outrepl Enter a REPL in the current scope For now let s press n lt enter gt to go to the next line The debugger will look like this now break in index js const numbers process argv gt const sum a b gt a b let out numbers reduce sum console log out debug gt We are at the second line now Now we know that there is something wrong with the numbers array We can take a look at its value by watching it We can run the command watch numbers to do so Then we can use the watchers command to print all watched variables This is what it will look like now debug gt watch numbers debug gt watchers numbers usr local Cellar node bin node Users mac Blog Code node debug index js debug gt We just spotted the bug We forgot to get rid of the first arguments in the process argv Silly me Let s fix the code First exit the debugger with Ctrl d then modify the first line const numbers process argv slice const sum a b gt a b let out numbers reduce sum console log out but it s still broken node index js just prints Let s try debugging again Fire up the debugger again and head to the third line where the addition goes on node inspect index js notice how we can pass arguments lt Debugger listening on ws dbe c a abccff lt For help see lt lt Debugger attached lt okBreak on start in index js gt const numbers process argv slice const sum a b gt a b let out numbers reduce sum debug gt nbreak in index js const numbers process argv slice gt const sum a b gt a b let out numbers reduce sum console log out debug gt nbreak in index js const numbers process argv slice const sum a b gt a b gt let out numbers reduce sum console log out debug gt Now instead of going to the next line we can step into the line so we know what exactly is going on Pressing s will move us back to the sum call Now we can watch a and b debug gt stepbreak in index js const numbers process argv slice gt const sum a b gt a b let out numbers reduce sum console log out debug gt watch a debug gt watch b debug gt watchers a b debug gt We just spotted the second bug We are trying to add two strings of numbers instead of strings Let s fix that right away by converting all the strings to numbers const numbers process argv slice map Number const sum a b gt a b let out numbers reduce sum console log out Running this program node index js will now correctly output Yay Wrap The Node js built in debugger can be a life saver when you don t have a proper IDE at hand You should take a moment to check out the official documentation for the debugger so you can understand the rest of the features You could even build your own client What s your favorite debugging tool |

A Custom date picker in SvelteI have this fairly small but fully functional custom date picker UI control which I ve been porting between UI frameworks for quite a few years I ported this example to Svelte about years ago and today I decided to update it to Svelte Try it out I always try this first with any new framework to see how they stack up Perhaps the most important thing demonstrated by this use case is the ability to validate and conditionally accept a value into the control s internal date state and the ability to modify the control s view state by navigating through months without changing the value it was quite a departure from the old version in case you d like to compare There s not a lot more to say about this Enjoy |

Typescript module, multiple exports, where do you begin? |
https://dev.to/mindplay/typescript-module-multiple-exports-where-do-you-begin-1on9
|
Typescript module multiple exports where do you begin I m building a Typescript library It s going contain several related packages I want them under a single source control but I want them published as packages you can install individually because some of the packages will have larger dependencies and I want to keep the main package lightweight I m guessing I need some sort of monorepo setup I d prefer to use whatever is available in plain old npm please no yarn or third party monorepo tools At least one of the packages is going to have multiple exports in package json that is it will contain multiple modules in the same package This will make sense for packages that ship with optional modules keeping them close at hand but loading them is optional The Typescript source module structure won t necessarily match the published modules that is I might decide to use more TS modules published as fewer compiled ES modules just for cleaner structure so I will probably need some sort of bundler as well I ve looked at Typescript project references and npm workspaces and it s not clear to me if I need either or both of those I d like to use esbuild or rollup for bundling but I need exports in package json which does not seem to be an npm standard feature Is it a node feature Or is it specific to webpack maybe I don t understand where this feature belongs or comes from My library should work both on the web and under node Emitting d ts files is important since it s a TS package Publishing modern ES modules would be fine if this requires a recent version of a browser or node that s fine supporting older platforms is not a concern for this library Supporting Deno is nice to have but not a must I realize I m already throwing up a long list of requirements here It s not completely clear to me if publishing for Deno requires you check in the compiled files or if it s better to just structure the TS module sources to fit If so I m willing to do that Where the heck do I start I m willing to make concessions here in favor of simplicity If that means I have to restructure my code or if publishing individual packages rather than multi module packages with exports makes things easier then yes There s a wealth of articles and documentation but it s never clear to me which of them apply to my situation There are so many options and avenues and every time I sit down to try to figure this out I get lost and overwhelmed by the time I have tabs open I just close everything and give up I really just want to keep things as simple as possible as few tools and as little configuration as necessary Help |

Getting Started with Docker |
https://dev.to/codesphere/getting-started-with-docker-42b
|
Getting Started with DockerWe ve all heard the dreaded words “But it works on my machine Whether simple or complex dependencies are an integral component of any development environment A slightly different version or installation of a dependency can cause drastic issues with your development That s where Docker comes in Docker facilitates the building and shipping of applications across machines consistently In today s article we re going to build and use your first Docker image While it may seem like an unnecessary step for your personal projects docker is essential for any development team What is Docker Docker is a platform that enables you to manage your application s development running and shipping independent of the infrastructure you are using Docker uses isolated environments with app specific dependencies installed to run applications These isolated environments are known as containers Docker gives us the ability to run multiple containers at the same time Since they are isolated we don t need to worry about containers interfering Thus Docker containers can simultaneously have different software versions running in different isolated environments The added benefit is that we don t need to clutter our host machine with multiple versions of the same software Docker containers are built by following pre written instructions These instructions are written as part of a Docker image A Docker image is a template created by the developer and it contains the application code libraries tools and other dependencies required to run the application inside a Docker container making the Docker image portable and platform independent Docker images open for public use are available on Docker Hub Using DockerFollow the instructions on to install the Docker engine on your computer Make sure to check that your machine meets all the requirements At the same time we recommend that you sign up here to be able to publish your docker images on to Docker hub Installing the Docker engine also installs a GUI and Docker CLI You can use the Docker CLI from your system s terminal directly When opened for the first time the Docker GUI also gives a small tutorial To use the Docker CLI we need to learn its basic commands Docker CommandsDocker commands always take the latest version by default If you need a different version you can add a “ after the name docker ps Lists all the containers currently running Adding the a attribute also lists the exited containers docker pull To download an image from Docker hub It takes the image name as a parameter docker run Runs a new container It takes an image name as a parameter If an image isn t available locally it checks the Docker hub repository downloads and runs the image docker stop Stops a running container It takes in the container id or container name as a parameter docker start Starts a stopped container It takes in the container id or container name as a parameter docker build Builds a new docker image It takes the image name and version as parameters docker images Lists all images available on the local machine docker rm Removes a container from the containers list It takes in the container id or container name as a parameter docker rmi Removes a local image from the machine It takes the image id as a parameter Make sure to remove all containers related to the image file you are removing We can also use the Docker GUI for the above commands as shown below Opens the web application in the browser Opens the interactive terminal for the container Stops the container Starts restarts the container Deletes the container Building a Docker imageWe will build a Docker image for a NodeJs application for our demo It is a simple To Do list and will use an Express based server Here s the code for our project Before creating the Dockerfile image we need to test our application locally to ensure it works You can download the above code and run it locally by running node server js from the terminal You should be able to open the webpage in the browser using localhost Once we are sure the application works fine we can create our first Docker image like so Create a folder and copy the source files index html script js and server js and the package json file inside it The Docker engine needs a Dockerfile containing the steps to build the image to create a Docker image We need to create this file You can create this file anywhere on your machine but using the same folder as the source files makes things easier We need to create a new plaintext file and name it Dockerfile Dockerfile doesn t have any extension The Dockerfile used to create the demo app image is available belowThe first line of the Dockerfile instructs the Docker engine to start with the base image of node alpine This image is available on Docker hub Alpine is a Linux distro small in size that helps keep the resulting image size small Line two changes our working directory to home demo app inside the environment Please note that now the environment is Linux so we need to follow Linux naming conventions Next we copy the package json file from the source files folder to the current working directory This file will be used in the next step to install the required dependencies Now we run the npm install command which installs all required dependencies Then we copy all the source files to our working directory Finally we execute the command node server js to run our application inside the environment We run the following command in the terminal to build this Docker image docker build t demo app demo app is the image name and the version is We need to run the image to create a Docker container and test our app Create a Docker container from the image using the following commanddocker run p name demo demo app The p adds a host port which we can use with localhost to access our web application The ーname attribute gives a name to the container and helps us run commands on the container If everything goes fine we can access the web application in our browser using localhost We can see our container details by running docker ps in a separate terminal And there you have it We created a Docker image from scratch and ran a container inside the terminal using that image You can even take it a step further and publish it on Docker hub to let other Docker users use it or just to show it off to friends Similarly you can build larger applications and use Docker to deploy them online Now the next step for a lot of development teams is deploying your application with this image But most cloud providers make this process extremely difficult That s why at Codesphere we re building a cloud provider that can run any app you throw at it Happy Coding |

Rivian reverses price hike for RT and RS pre orders following backlashRivian is quickly backtracking on its steep EV price hikes The Vergereports Rivian has reversed the price increases for RT pickup and RS SUV pre order customers Anyone who ordered one of the vehicles before March st will pay the original prices and those who cancelled orders in response can reinstate their orders without affecting their prices or delivery timing Orders for affected configurations made from March st onward will still cost more Company chief RJ Scaringe said the higher prices quot broke the trust quot of customers and that the automaker didn t properly communicate the reasons for the hikes While the new prices were meant to reflect higher manufacturing costs hence maintaining prices for new buyers Rivian quot wrongly quot applied those increases to existing customers according to Scaringe It also incorrectly presumed customers wouldn t mind buying the lower end dual motor and standard battery models if the quad motor option was suddenly too expensive The price change angered more than a few customers Quad motor buyers faced prices between to above what they d expected Some accused Rivian of bait and switch tactics while others cancelled or threatened to cancel orders in response Tesla a key competitor has historically honored pre order prices regardless of any changes between the order and delivery The incident is poorly timed at least Rivian is still in the early stages of ramping up RT deliveries and has yet to fulfill RS orders The automaker s reputation is still young and delicate ーit risks driving business to Tesla Ford and others with comparable EVs While reversing the price hike will likely be painful to Rivian it might be worthwhile if it fosters goodwill and leads to more sales in the long run nbsp |

Four Ways States Use Digital Tools to Deliver Critical ServicesGovernment leaders are reimagining the way they serve communities in the new digital era They ve traded manual paper based processes and in person services for digitized flexible solutions that offer better constituent experiences and improve operations Google Cloud is working with SpringML to help public sector agencies address four pandemic driven challenges with digital solutions Keeping the World Moving Digital Immunization PassThe speed and accuracy in processing COVID documents is important to many organizations including transportation authorities hospitals entertainment venues educational institutions fitness centers and businesses of all sizes Unlike paper digital immunization credentials are easy to access and difficult to forge SpringML s digital immunization pass provides a safe way for individuals to demonstrate their immunization status or share test results and allows organizations to make informed decisions Using Google Cloud as its foundation SpringML s digital immunization pass can provide access to multiple registries operated by states or private labs The solution is available on various devices and can work with existing digital wallet technology Individuals can control who accesses their records which can be configured to disclose only the minimum necessary information to the verifier A call center application interface CCAI provides automated agent support and advanced analytics track mobility trends via the data captured Enabling Telehealth Electronic Visit VerificationSince the start of the pandemic the number of virtual visits to healthcare providers has skyrocketed But Medicare Medicaid and other healthcare payers must be able to verify such visits or they run the risk of permitting fraud In fact Section of the st Century Cures Act mandates that states must implement an electronic visit verification EVV system for all Medicaid covered home based healthcare EVV verifies the date time and site of a provider visit as well as identifying the services provided and who provided them SpringML s EVV solution can use a few key data points to flag high probability fraudulent claims using a machine learning model originally designed to detect false unemployment claims The solution checks the claim application for anomalies and formulates a “score for the likelihood of fraud displaying the information on an anomaly detection dashboard It is built on Google Cloud which provides flexibility and scale while allowing it to integrate with appointment management and patient billing solutions The solution is secure and compliant with FedRAMP HIPAA and SOC Virtual or Live Omni Channel Citizen EngagementGovernment call centers are often overwhelmed with requests making it difficult for live agents to respond to each caller in a timely manner with comprehensive information and assistance This is particularly challenging in places where citizens might not have reliable internet access creating equity gaps in areas that often need critical information and government services the most SpringML s AI enabled call center solution allows states to integrate virtual agents and chatbots to improve customer service automate common tasks and boost efficiency For example a telephone call might be answered by a virtual agent If the caller s needs are not met by the bot they can be transferred to a live agent who has access to the previous information Similarly someone who connects via a computer interface can seamlessly move from a virtual to a live agent SpringML s omni channel solution ensures that citizens can connect to a person no matter how their contact originated Opening the State of Hawaii for Business and Leisure TravelWhen pandemic restrictions began to ease Hawaii s health officials needed a way to screen and track health data for all travelers so they could quickly identify and quarantine those with symptoms without overly burdening state resources and traveler movementーor risking safety The state needed a scalable digital solution that could be deployed across its systems to track traveler data in real time while avoiding the inconvenience and expense of one on one human interactions The solution needed to support a multilayered process incorporating several state departments and officials wanted to open the state to visitors as soon as possible to help regenerate the state s economy Google Cloud and SpringML took only six weeks to build Safe Travels an electronic visit verification program that allows the state to collect and track travel and health information for all visitors Since its launch in August more than million travelers have used the program Better TogetherThe partnership of SpringML and Google Cloud offers many advantages in terms of rapid application development and deployment A regional systems integrator SpringML can move quickly frequently providing a proof of concept within days and going live within weeks Its solutions are serverless requiring little to no developer experience and minimal technical staff to deploy SpringML and Google Cloud also offer flexibility their out of the box public data dashboards analytics and best in class models integrate any data source to the analytics platform This flexibility is more important than ever when speed matters in delivering vital government services |
