optionsIt appears to me that making architectural decisions for Web development is more complicated than ever due to the emergence of frameworks that bake in client server tradeoffs Yes I am thinking of Next js or Remix which offer different rendering options for different use cases In any case there is a lot of information out there to help Web developers make informed decisions Typically Web developers solve these tradeoffs and pick one rendering method or another driven by a combination of data and user experience requirements Static Site Generation SSG Pages of your Web App Web Site are generated at build time It helps build sites when data is not changed or updated frequently such as information portals or news sites Frameworks like Next js support features such as Incremental Static Regeneration which means that the static site is regenerated on the server automatically based on a schedule configured by developers Server Side Rendering SSR Content of your Web App Web Site is generated dynamically on a request basis This rendering solution is most appropriate for data intensive scenarios where content is updated very frequently it is very large access latency is critical or complex processing and transformation is needed before returning the response to the client Client Side Rendering CSR The data displayed on your Web App Web Site is served through an HTTP API and rendered by the client on the browser To improve the performance time at the client device this data must be lightweight and ready to be consumed without further processing This approach can help for those cases where user interactions and state management of the user interface need to happen as close to the user as possible to offer a very interactive and reactive user experience However modern deployment options have additional non functional requirements NFRs I am talking about NFRs such as an extra twist in performance cost implications and environmental impact These are things that nowadays Web Developers need to consider when making these architectural decisions The battle at the server sideWe now count on an extensive catalog of managed cloud services and pure serverless primitives There is a battle in this server side space between second tier cloud platforms such as Vercel or Netlify they don t own Datacenters and first tier cloud ones such as Cloudflare and AWS they own Datacenters They all compete with each other to offer the best Web developer experience and optimize those new NFRs Especially for first tier cloud platform this battle is making innovations spring at a pace we have never been before especially with the emergence of Edge Computing solutions As I wrote in the past computing at the edge is not about CDNs and caches anymore this is something else We are now talking about moving part of our applications and services to an edge location An edge location is where cloud providers cache content so that it can be very quickly accessed by local referrers It also allows local access to the cloud platform s network backbone avoiding the public internet between the edge location and the regional datacenter from where content originates At the edge actual client requests and application logic can be processed and executed without the need to send that request to a service running on the origin cloud region Of course this approach still qualifies as serverless because you don t need to provision or manage any type of runtime Additionally this approach comes with further benefits such as global distribution and automatic multi region access for your applications out of the box Edge Computing use casesOkay then how does edge computing help Web development In my opinion it can make it better faster and cheaper with solutions that help and support the Javascript development community Solutions such as Cloudflare Workers or Cloudflare Page Functions are very confortable for Web developers as they offer the same native Javascript APIs that developers are used to work with in the browser It s a very natural ecosystem for them In its current form I would choose Edge Computing services only as an add on layer on top of my server side components running at the cloud origin for very concrete use cases Data Filtering Filter data coming from the application components before sending a response to the client This can be done based on user specific criteria such as location or device type The goal is to avoid data processing and filtering as much as possible at the browser so it can receive ready to render data Stateful Requests Combined with lightweight storage at the edge e g Key Value stores we could handle sophisticated states on edge on top of the application running on a serverless environment And we could do it without firing full round trips to the cloud origin region This would allow Web developers to build session based online collaboration tools e g Miro dashboard running on serverless computing Authorization Apply Role Based Access Control rules to UI components returned to the client Imagine you are including an Admin section in your UI which options are affected by the user s role Filtering those UI options at the edge would be a very cost effective and high performant solution Cyber protection Use native cybersecurity features and APIs at the CDN to identify networking patterns such as bot detection and apply URL redirects to avoid exposing the application code running at cloud region to malicious agents Also I ve seen edge functions used to prevent clickjacking or XSS attacks by adding security headers to the response Performance Remember that edge computing providers own cache datacenters all over the world so I am sure there is one close to your location right now This allow them implement powerful caching mechanisms to improve TTFB for static content HTML CSS Javascript bundles and other techniques such as image resizing optimization based on user devices ConclusionThese use cases can be game changing especially for Javascript developers building Web applications Solutions like Cloudflare Workers are based on Google s V engine allowing response times for client requests under ms i e full round trip not just internal execution time Then as described above the main logic for the server side components would run entirely on the cloud region with a preference for serverless components But who knows maybe edge computing evolves to the point where we can run larger pieces of business logic closer to the user location I am getting my hands dirty with a few of horizons This has earned us our current position as the world s uncontested beauty leader € B annual sales in present in countries with over employees  Today with the power of our game changing science multiplied by cutting edge technologies we continue our lifelong journey of shaping the future of beauty  As a Beauty Tech company we leverage our decades long heritage of rich data assets to empower our decision making with instant sophisticated analysis  Because we oversee global brands which must adapt to local requirements we need to maintain a deep understanding of what a brands data represents while managing disparate legal and regulatory requirements for different countries Our end goal is to run a safe compliant and sustainable data warehouse as efficiently and effectively as possible  We sync and aggregate internal and external data from a wide variety of sources across organizations and retail stores This made the management of our data warehouse infrastructure used to be very complex and hard to manage before Google Cloud L Oréal s footprint was so large that we once found it impossible to have a standardized method to handle data Every process was vendor specific and the infrastructure was brittle We went looking for a solution to our complex data infrastructure needs and defined the following non negotiable principles  No Ops The job of a developer at L Oréal is not to manage servers We need an elastic infrastructure that scales on demand so that our developers can focus on delivering customized and inclusive beauty experiences to all consumers rather than focusing on managing servers  Secure We have strict security and compliance requirements which vary by country and we employ a zero trust security strategy We must keep both our own internal data and customer data safe and encrypted  Sustainable Our data lives in multiple environments including on prem data centers and public cloud services We must be able to securely access and analyze this data while minimizing the complexity and environmental impact of moving and duplicating data  End to end supervision Because developers shouldn t be managing servers we need a “single pane of glass dashboard to monitor and triage the system if something goes wrong  Easy to deploy Deploying code safely should not compromise velocity We are constantly developing innovations that push the boundaries of science and reinvent beauty rituals We need integrated tools to make our code deployment process seamless and safe  Event driven architecture Our data is used globally by research product business and engineering teams with high expectations on data quality and timeliness Many of our internal processes and analysis are based on near real time data  Data products delivered “as a service We want to empower our employees to drive business value at record speed To that end we need solutions that enable us to remove the developers from the critical path of solution delivery as much as possible  Extract load transform ELT Our goal is to implement the pattern to load data as soon as possible into the data warehouse to take advantage of SQL transformations  After considering multiple vendors on the market with these principles in mind we landed on end to end Google Cloud serverless and data tooling We were already using Google Cloud for a few processes including BigQuery and loved the experience  We ve now expanded our use of Google Cloud to fully support the L Oréal Beauty Tech Data Platform L Oréal s Beauty Tech Data Platform incorporates data from two types of sources directly via API which is data that adapts easily to our schema and is inserted directly into BigQuery and bulk data from integrations which require event driven transformations using Eventarc mechanisms These transformations are performed in Cloud Run and Cloud Functions nd gen or directly in SQL With Google Cloud we can adapt very quickly  Today we currently have flows for users using the native zero trust capabilities offered by Google Cloud Indeed the flows come from Google Cloud and other third party services  BigQuery enabled us to adopt standard SQL as our universal language in our data warehouse and meet all expectations for queries and reporting We were also able to load original data using features like federated queries and efficiently transitioned from ETL to ELT data ingestion by handling semi structured data with SQL This approach of loading original data from sources into BigQuery with non destructive transformations allows us to reprocess data for new use cases easily directly within BigQuery  Our applications are hosted on multiple environments on premises in Google Cloud and in other public clouds This made it difficult for our data engineers and analysts to natively analyze data across clouds until we started usingBigQuery Omni This capability of BigQuery allowed us to globally access and analyze data across clouds through a single pane of glass using the native BigQuery user interface itself Without BigQuery Omni it would ve been impossible for our teams to natively do cross cloud analytics Moreover it eliminated the need for us to move sensitive data which is not only expensive because of local tax and subsea transport but also incredibly risky sometimes even forbidden because of local regulations  Today Google Cloud powers our Beauty Tech Data Platform which stores TB of production data in BigQuery and processes TB of data each month We have more than governed datasets and millions of BigQuery tables coming from multiple data sources such as Salesforce SAP Microsoft and Google Ads  For more complex transformations where custom and specific libraries are required Cloud Workflows help us to manage the complexity very efficiently by orchestrating steps in containers through Cloud Run Cloud Functions and even BigQuery jobs ーthe most used way to transform and add value to the L Oréal data  Additionally by using BigQuery and Google Cloud s serverless compute for API ingestion bulk data loading and post loading transformations we can keep the entire system in a single boundary of trust at a fraction of the cost With ingest queries and transformations all being fully elastic and on demand we no longer have to perform capacity planning for either the compute or analytics components of the system And of course these services pay as you go model perfectly aligns with L Oréal s strategy of only paying for something when you use it   Google Cloud fulfilled the requirements of our Beauty Tech Data Platform And as if offering us a no ops secure easy to deploy custom development free event based platform with end to end supervision wasn t enough Google Cloud also helped us with our sustainability efforts   Being able to measure and understand the environmental footprint of our public cloud usage is also a key part of our sustainable tech roadmap With Google Cloud Carbon Footprint we can easily see the impact noticed increasing demand for connecting different applications and services with less code Independent of industry customers leverage serverless architectures to connect and extend the cloud across Google Cloud services third party services and their own custom services Here are some common use cases Data processing pipelines that run transformation asynchronously or inline Example a home security camera captures images that are processed to detect deliveries and thefts Cloud Functions then feeds the new data to Vertex AI in order to update models and make them more accurate Real time analytics on files streamed from Cloud Storage into BigQuery using Cloud Functions Example Security threat analysis on incoming logs that draws insights and highlights malicious behavior Change Data Capture CDC to detect and capture data changes for processing in downstream systems Example Send CDC events from Firestore to a cloud function to take actions like notifying users or update a data warehouse Cloud Ops automation to programmatically augment infrastructure lifecycle operations when provisioning and modifying cloud resources Example Create customized notifications when a Compute Engine VM is created or shut down Business process automation workflows for reliable and traceable execution of business workflows Example Take action before a quota or billing threshold is reached by automatically adjusting resources or execute an e commerce order end to end from payment processing and warehouse inventory checks to delivery notices When integrating services it s all too easy to introduce tight coupling which grows brittle slow and difficult to debug over time Cloud Functions Eventarc Workflows Tasks and Scheduler allow you to integrate services in a manner that is inherently asynchronous and loosely coupled preserving the agility of each individual service while still allowing rapid innovation What s more existing applications running in Google Cloud can be simply and flexibly extended with Cloud Functions There are two types of integration patterns enabling the Programmable Cloud Synchronous extensions powered by Cloud Functions augment existing functionality of other GCP services For example developers can use Cloud Functions as part of a BigQuery SQL query with new Remote User Defined Functions UDFs that integrate data analysis and reporting with complex procedural code and business logic  Custom blocking code from Cloud Functions when users create accounts or sign in to applications through Identity Platform Asynchronous event driven patterns powered by Eventarc Workflows Tasks and Scheduler make it possible to respond to triggers or events i e when this happens then do that For example developers can set up Eventarc to trigger Workflows on events that are then reliably processed by a combination of Google Cloud third party and custom services We are excited by the opportunities that lie ahead as we empower organizations to move to the Cloud
