Using Astronomy, Chemistry, and Meteorology to Name CSS Variables |
https://dev.to/auroratide/using-astronomy-chemistry-and-meteorology-to-name-css-variables-508i
|
Using Astronomy Chemistry and Meteorology to Name CSS VariablesSometimes I use CSS variables to give names to specific font sizes and spacings It might look like this root font small em font medium em font large em I call this small medium large pattern t shirt sizing as it closely resembles clothing alpha sizing convention It s a pretty common pattern usually making use of the sm md and lg abbreviations as well But maybe it s too common is there a way science can provide an alternate way of thinking about design concepts like relative size How about Astronomy and planets to denote relative font sizes Chemistry and atoms for proportioned margin and padding ️Meteorology and clouds for shadows and elevation ️And disclaimer This is mostly a fun and creative take and is not the way I think CSS variables should in general be named See Is this actually useful Planetary SizesOur solar system has eight planets including Earth or it has tons of planets but for this let s stick with eight Planets of the solar system to scale And Pluto Source NASA Lunar and Planetary Institute Each planet is a different diameter so by listing the planets in order of their size we can get a totally not t shirt size system for naming CSS variables Mercury smallest MarsVenusEarthNeptuneUranusSaturnJupiter largest Just pick a baseline I like Earth then let the smaller planets represent smaller sizes and the larger planets represent larger sizes root font size venus em font size earth em font size neptune em font size uranus em With t shirt sizes you get five standard sizes xs sm md lg xl before you start needing more x s plus assuming you choose md as the baseline you only get two size tiers above it for all your different headings and whatnot But with planets you get eight sizes four of which are bigger than Earth Need more You could always introduce Pluto or the Sun Atomic SpacingSometimes it s nice to know the ratio between different values For example on a button I might want the left right padding to be three times larger than the top bottom padding Literal numbers naturally accomplish this root spacing em spacing em spacing em Crucially the numbers are not the same as the actual values used They merely help define a ratio so that you know spacing is three times larger than the baseline This happens to be Tailwind s philosophy This works but it s boring Instead let s use atoms A Lithium atom which has three red protons Source Indolences The Periodic Table of Elements lists different kinds of atoms such as carbon oxygen and more The thing to note is that the identity of an atom is directly tied to the number of protons it has Hydrogen atoms always have proton Carbon atoms always have protons Oxygen atoms always have protons This is known as an atom s atomic number and conveniently this gives us a numeric scale like we were using above Instead of the number we can use the corresponding atom s symbol root spacing h em hydrogen spacing he em helium spacing c em carbon spacing o em oxygen Sorry IBM but this is how you really make a carbon design system Cloudy ElevationMaterial UI has this concept of elevation that simulates how high off the screen something is by using a shadow The bigger and more diffuse the shadow the higher the element is You know what else is elevated off the ground Clouds And importantly different types of clouds generally live at different altitudes Different types of clouds are found at different altitudes Source Valentin de Bruyn Coton So cirrus clouds are above altocumulus clouds which are above stratus clouds This helps establish a pattern for how much shadow an element may have root shadow ground none shadow stratus em em hsla shadow altocumulus em em hsla shadow cirrus em em hsla dialog box shadow var shadow cirrus I know what we re all thinking though what about that cumulonimbus cloud stretching through all the layers root shadow cumulonimbus var shadow stratus var shadow altocumulus var shadow cirrus Z index is another elevation like concept that comes to mind and is notorious for being mishandled Is this actually useful I ve started using this scheme on small personal projects because I think it s more fun but would I present this to a team Definitely not Universality is very important in team and long maintenance contexts I might be a total chemistry nerd but most people aren t it would be wrong of me to force people to relive high school and college That said the point is there isn t a one true paradigm when it comes to abstracting design concepts You can use t shirt sizes but maybe your team is happy using animals instead or maybe it s preferred not to use variables at all Find what works for you or your team and if it happens to be a little creative all the power to you ReferencesThe Dilemma of Naming Font Size VariablesCreating Your Design SystemCreating Themeable Design Systems |

Create a React Chat Application Using KendoReact Conversational UI |
https://dev.to/chineduimoh/create-a-react-chat-application-using-kendoreact-conversational-ui-36c7
|
Create a React Chat Application Using KendoReact Conversational UIThe KendoReact Conversational UI creates a connection that closes the gap between the web and the next gen natural language processing applications It also provides a React Chat component that allows end users to participate in chat sessions with other chatbots or users It provides a wide range of features from integration with Chatbot services data binding and customization to globalization and suggested actions That isn t allーwe will go over the key features that make this an ideal component for adding chat functionality into your React application Key Features of KendoReact Conversational UIIntegration With Chatbot ServicesThe Chat component provides a means of integrating and connecting chatbots Visit the KendoReact documentation for a code example on the integration of the React Chat component with a sample DialogFlow Agent or an Azure Bot Service Data BindingThis React Conversational UI Component provides a data model which allows you to bind the list of messages from a remote streaming service You can read more on the data binding options of the Chat component in the docs Suggested ActionsYou can use the built in action types to configure the Chat to display the suggested actions of the last messages which prevents chat users from losing valuable time when responding to the messages Find more on the implementation details of the suggested actions here Using KendoReact Conversational UI in a React AppLet s demonstrate how to use this React Chat component by building a simple chat website PrerequisitesTo follow along with this tutorial you will need to have A basic knowledge of ReactJSA text editor Setting Up the React ProjectThose who are already familiar with scaffolding a React app using npx can skip ahead because next I will show how to get a React app off the ground All you need to do is follow the steps below and you will get your React app development server running on your local machine Run the following boilerplate command listed below to quickly set up a React project for development npx create react app chat web use npmcd chat webnpm startAnd those who use yarn can use the following commands yarn create react app chat web cd chat web yarn startLocate the chat web project s directory and open it in your code editor Now you can begin by striping down the codes in the App js file to look like this import App css function App return lt div classname app gt lt div gt export default App Now that we are done scaffolding our React application let s begin installing the dependencies for the application Dependency InstallationNext let s add the KendoReact packages we ll be using for this project I will use the KendoReact Default theme for this project but other options existーfor example the KendoReact Bootstrap and the KendoReact Material themes Note KendoReact is a commercial UI component library and as a part of this you will need to provide a license key when you use the components in your React projects You can snag a license key through a free trial or by owning a commercial license For more information you can head over to the KendoReact Licensing page Enter the following command into your CLI command line interface and run the command npm install save progress kendo theme default progress kendo react conversational ui progress kendo react buttons progress kendo licensing progress kendo react intlThe command above installs the KendoReact Default theme which will set the default CSS style of the React Chat component We also installed progress kendo react conversational ui where we will import the Chat component for the website and all its peer dependencies I am sure by now you will have noticed the progress scope we ve used The KendoReact library provides many decoupled modules for different purposes they all scope to progress Progress is the parent company behind KendoReact ーthink of it as a global scope for the modules in KendoReact Now that all the modules we need are installed let s start developing the chat application The React Chat ApplicationFirstly paste the following code into the App js file import as React from react import Chat from progress kendo react conversational ui import progress kendo theme default dist all css const user id avatarUrl const bot id const initialMessages author bot suggestedActions type reply value Neat timestamp new Date text Hello this is a demo bot I don t do much but I can count symbols const App gt const messages setMessages React useState initialMessages const addNewMessage event gt let botResponse Object assign event message botResponse text countReplayLength event message text botResponse author bot setMessages messages event message setTimeout gt setMessages oldMessages gt oldMessages botResponse const countReplayLength question gt let length question length let answer question contains exactly length symbols return answer return lt Chat user user messages messages onMessageSend addNewMessage placeholder Type a message width gt Let s break the code into smaller chunks and explain them bit by bit for better understanding import as React from react import Chat from progress kendo react conversational ui import progress kendo theme default dist all css Above we imported react and we will be using some of its React features i e useState Chat is imported from progress kendo react conversational ui and progress kendo theme default dist all css which provides the style we need to make our Chat components elegant const user id avatarUrl const bot id const initialMessages author bot suggestedActions type reply value Neat timestamp new Date text Hello this is a demo bot I don t do much but I can count symbols In the above code section we first created the user object which contains the id and avatarUrl user image These two properties can be modified however you want or based on the needs of our application Next we created the bot object with an id property but the bot could have an avatarUrl if required The initialMessages contain array objects which are the message s you want the user to see upon starting the chat session const App gt const messages setMessages React useState initialMessages const addNewMessage event gt let botResponse Object assign event message botResponse text countReplayLength event message text botResponse author bot setMessages messages event message setTimeout gt setMessages oldMessages gt oldMessages botResponse const countReplayLength question gt let length question length let answer question contains exactly length symbols return answer return lt Chat user user messages messages onMessageSend addNewMessage placeholder Type a message width gt Finally in our App function we used the useState hook to mutate the messages which is passed as props in the Chat component Also we created an addNewMessage function which is called whenever we send a message In the addNewMessage function implementation we first mutated the properties text and author of botResponse We passed an array into setMessages where we used the spread operator syntax to copy all the messages and add the event message We also implemented the setTimeout function which calls the setMessages function then the previous state is copied into an array using the spread operator syntax and adds the botResponse The countReplyLength just returns the length of the sent message The image below shows the chat application with the initial response The following image below shows the chat application after interacting with the chatbot ConclusionIn this post we covered an introduction to the KendoReact CConversational UI Still for a production application you would replace the bot response with the response of either a Google chatbot or a Microsoft chatbot This implementation is similar to an end to end user chat application Note that KendoReact has to be licensed before you can use your application for commercial purposes as it is not free for commercial purposes |

CSS Grid and Flexbox |
https://dev.to/awaisbutt/css-grid-and-flexbox-j52
|
CSS Grid and Flexbox GridCSS Grid Layout is a two dimensional grid based layout system with rows and columns that simplifies web page creation by eliminating the need for floats and placement Grid layout like tables allows us to arrange objects in columns and rows To begin set the column and row sizes with grid template columns and grid template rows and then arrange the container element s child elements into the grid with grid column and grid row FlexboxThe CSS Flexbox layout is one dimensional It s useful for assigning and arranging space within a container s contents It is compatible with a wide range of display devices and screen sizes Difference Between Grid and Flexbox Dimensionality and FlexibilityFlexbox gives you more control over item alignment and space distribution Flexbox only works with columns or rows because it is one dimensional Grid provides two dimensional layout capabilities allowing for variable widths as a length unit This compensates for Flex s shortcomings AlignmentDevelopers may align items vertically or horizontally with Flex Direction which is useful when creating and reversing rows and columns CSS Grid uses fractional measure units for grid fluidity as well as auto keyword capabilities to modify columns and rows automatically Item ManagementThe parent element is Flex Container and the children are Flex Item By altering item dimensions the Flex Container may assure a balanced portrayal This enables developers to create designs that adapt to changing screen widths Grid allows you to position items both implicitly and explicitly It has built in automation that allows it to automatically extend line items and copy values from the previous item into the new creation ConclusionCSS Grids helps you create the outer layout of the webpage You can build complex as well responsive design with this This is why it is called layout first Flexbox mostly helps align content amp move blocks CSS grids are for D layouts It works with both rows and columns Flexbox works better in one dimension only either rows OR columns It will be more time saving and helpful if you use both at the same time |
