海外TECH DEV Community ML Model https://dev.to/prazwal/ml-model-npl ML ModelThe model is the core component of machine learning and ultimately what we are trying to build A model might estimate how old a person is from a photo predict what you might like to see on social media or decide where a robotic arm should move to In our scenario we want to build a model that can estimate the best boot size for a dog based on their harness size Models can be built in lots of ways For example a traditional model that simulates how an airplane flies is built by people using knowledge of physics and engineering Machine learning models are specialーrather than being edited by people so that they work well machine learning models are shaped by data they learn from experience How to think about modelsA model can be thought of as a function that accepts data as an input and produces an output More specifically a model uses input data to estimate something else For example in our scenario we want to build a model that is given a harness size and estimates boot sizeNote that harness size and dog boot size are data they are not part of the model Harness size is our input Dog boot size is the output Models are often simple codeModels are often not meaningfully different from simple functions you are already familiar with Like other code they contain logic and parameters For example the logic might be “multiply the harness size by parameter If parameter here was our model would multiply harness size by and return the result Selecting a modelThere are many model types some simple and some complex Like all code simpler models are often the most reliable and easy to understand whilst complex models can potentially perform impressive feats Which kind of model should be chosen depends on your goal For example medical scientists often work with models that are relatively simple because they are reliable and intuitive By contrast AI based robots typically rely on very complex models The first step in machine learning is selecting the kind of model that you would like to use This means we are choosing a model based on its internal logic For example we might select a two parameter model to estimate dog boot size from harness size Notice how we have selected a model based on how it works logically but not based on its parameter values In fact at this point the parameters have not yet been set to any particular value Parameters are discovered during trainingParameter values are not selected by the human designer Instead parameter values are set to an initial guess and then adjusted during an automated learning process called training Given our selection of a two parameter model above we now provide random guesses for our parameters These random parameters will mean the model isn t good at estimating boot size so we perform training During training these parameters are automatically changed to two new values that give better results Diagram showing a model with and as the parameters Exactly how this process works is something we will progressively explain throughout your learning journey 2022-04-08 17:37:45

海外TECH DEV Community From Python to Java: Comprehensions and Streams https://dev.to/dylanfw/from-python-to-java-comprehensions-and-streams-3j53 From Python to Java Comprehensions and StreamsFor most of my career I ve worked primarily as a Python developer There were occasional trips into the frontend for some JavaScript or a brief detour through a Go application but the vast majority of my work was solidly Python That is until I joined Square Square might be better known for its Ruby code but there is also a sizable chunk of Java within its codebase So when I came to Square I knew I d be putting away my list comprehensions generators and decorators and instead I d be learning some new programming language patterns and idioms But of course my Python experience would not be for nothing As it turns out we can find parallel ideas throughout most programming languages In this series I ll be highlighting some of these parallels I ve encountered switching from Python to Java in hopes that it might help someone else who also finds themselves crossing this language barrier IntroductionIt s impossible to avoid list and dictionary comprehensions when working in Python Whether you need to create a sublist by filtering out certain values transform each element in an existing list or rearrange keys and values into a new dictionary comprehensions are a quintessential Python tool They re so useful in Python and so numerous that you might find yourself afraid that you can t do even the simplest tasks in Java You might recall hearing other developers groan about Java s verbosity and heavy handedness as you start writing List lt Integer gt evenIntegers new ArrayList lt Integer gt for Integer integer allIntegers if integer evenIntegers add integer at least that s how I felt until I learned about Streams With Streams we don t have to rewire our brains or begrudgingly write lengthy boilerplate for simple tasks stream collect However this is Java and we are going to be writing some boilerplate Types are everything in Java and in order to leverage the Streams API we ll have to have an object of type Stream lt T gt Luckily this is often as easy as calling stream on our object assuming our object is iterable a list set array etc Once we have our Stream lt T gt object we can apply a series of filters and transformations but in the end we re going to want a list again or a set map etc This is where collect comes in along with various Collectors In this post we ll only focus on two Collector methods Collectors toList and Collectors toMap The basic structure of a stream is like soobj stream lt intermediate actions gt collect More verbose than Python certainly but not too bad So without further ado let s check out a few common operations and how we might do them with Python s comprehensions and then with Java s Streams FilteringImagine we have a list of integers and we want only the even numbers The example is trivial but I think it generalizes well enough In Python we would solve this problem with a simple list comprehension even nums n for n in list of nums if n With Java Streams we could accomplish this like so List lt Integer gt evenNums listOfNums stream filter n gt n collect Collectors toList TransformingSometimes we want to take one list of elements and transform them into something else For a simple example let s take our same list of integers and multiple each by two First in Python doubled nums n for n in list of nums and then with Java Streams List lt Integer gt doubledNums listOfNums stream map n gt n collect Collectors toList Lists to DictionariesNot everything can be accomplished with lists sometimes we need to put things into a dictionary or a Map as they re called in Java land Suppose we have a list of User objects and we want a dictionary of each user name keyed by their user id names by id user id user name for user in users It s a little more complicated in Java In our previous examples we used Collectors toList Now that we want a Map we ll have to use Collectors toMap This collector asks for a lambda function to produce the key and another one to produce the value Map lt Integer String gt namesById users stream collect Collectors toMap user gt user getId user gt user getName ConclusionJava has a reputation for having a verbose syntax and Streams are no exception But they are a marked improvement over excessive loops and temporary variables for otherwise simple transformations and collections While this post highlighted some ways that we can use Streams when we would otherwise write a comprehension in Python it s important to know that Streams are much more than this and are capable of some really cool things parallelization lazy evaluation sorting querying etc etc To learn more about Streams check out this post by Eugen Paraschiv on Stackify and of course the Java documentation Notes Python does have support for the more functional programming style filter that more closely mirrors Java s implementation Though list comprehensions are generally considered to be more Pythonic than filter even nums filter lambda n n list of nums Like the previous note Python has support for map but in most cases the list comprehension is preferred doubled nums map lambda n n list of nums Lisp programmers might take issue with this statement 2022-04-08 17:36:25

海外TECH DEV Community Remote debugging Github actions workflow https://dev.to/neeldev96/remote-debugging-github-actions-workflow-24jn Remote debugging Github actions workflowI was in the process of setting up a new deployment workflow for one of my github repositories I tested all the scripts locally that I added to the github actions workflow file github workflow deployment yml and to my relief all the scripts worked as expected On that positive note I pushed the new workflow file and was waiting eagerly to see the little yellow dots on Github actions turn greenWell it did turn green but I realized that something was not right after validating the deployed artifacts If things go as expected in the first try then our jobs as devs wouldn t be that interesting now would it The issue was that the workflow missed to include some required assets to the deployed bundle The same script which worked locally without any issues was mis behaving in the pipeline and I spend an hour scrutinizing the yaml file line by line and I could see nothing deviating from what the workflow was intended to do So I came to the conclusion that somehow my setup is not compatible with the worker that github uses to run my workflow I was looking for an option to directly get into the worker that is running my workflow so that it would be easier to troubleshoot the bug I was on the looking spree for a tool that does exactly the same and after a very short time of research I found the perfectly suitable oneAction TL DRThe above action can be included to the workflow yaml file and it will keep the job hanging from the stage where the action was referred It will print the SSH details to the console which can be used to remotely login to the github worker that is running the workflowHow to setup Setting up this action is very simple You just need to add the following code to your workflow yaml file and this action will block your job from that stage onwards name Setup Debug Session uses csexton debugger action masterHere is a sample workflow file with the complete setupname New Pipelineon push branches main pull request branches main jobs debug workflow name Job to debug the workflow runs on ubuntu latest steps name Check out code uses actions checkout v name Setup Debug Session uses csexton debugger action masterOnce the job is blocked if you expand the details of that stage you will get the details to login remotely to the worker using SSHIf you have a working terminal capable of logging into a remote host using SSH then just running ssh xxxxxxxxxxxx sfo tmate io masked the actual username with xxx for security should directly take you into the worker The default session timeout is set to minutes and if you wish to extend it then running the command touch tmp keepalive should do the trick Remote session of the github actions workerFrom the SSH session if you know your way around remote sessions and the commands for your host then you can troubleshoot your issues with ease In my case the issue was due to an improperly configured path relative to the working directory which I found out once I tried to run the commands manually within the worker ConclusionThis is such a simple to setup action which comes in handy when you are setting up new github actions workflows and if you wish to ensure that the internals are being setup properly Let s not leave room for any surprises on the day of deployment 2022-04-08 17:19:25
