Figma Firsts: How To Get Started |
https://dev.to/melguachun/figma-firsts-how-to-get-started-4cf
|
Figma Firsts How To Get StartedAs an engineer with a background in visual arts and an interest in frontend engineering learning Figma seemed evident in my future It wasn t until recently when a friend suggested it that I took looking into learning Figma seriously Immediately I saw the potential behind this tool and how it can enhance my abilities as an engineer while furthering my interest in UX UI design So in a way I was killing two birds with one stone So I figured I d carve out some tips on how to get started with Figma to get you started on creating layouts while displaying how I use it in my everyday life Getting started is pretty simple There is a free version that can be accessed by anyone by just making an account on their site Once your account is created you ll be brought to your working page with a dashboard If you look around you might see some familiar icons if you have experience with any drawing or photo editing software Icons like text pen tool vectors and other tools exist in the Figma world just as they do in Photoshop Illustrator Gimp etc These icons serve the same purpose from prior use so if you have prior experience with these tools you ll feel very comfortable And if you don t thats totally cool too Figma is very intuitive and does a lot of the guessing work for you so the tools should come naturally to you with little time Starting a layout is like staring at a blank code editor It can be intimidating to start especially when you re just learning I recommend looking into the free resources Figma offers and peruse their layout designs It s a great way to get a deeper understanding of what s possible in Figma But sometimes research isn t enough to get you motivated to start designing things yourself To really understand how to use Figma you have to create layouts yourself I found this daunting in it s own right Even though I have a background in visual arts I m still learning how to take my visual vocabulary and transfer it to tech which has it s won concerns of accessibility legibility hierarchy etc This made me wonder if I m feeling overwhelmed what does it mean for others who have little to no design background Regardless of the type of background you have in art and design a great way to get into start designing is to copy other layouts When I was at art school a common quote my illustration teacher would say if You re only as good as your reference What he meant was that our ability to show our full potential in an art piece is as good as the photos we are working from The quality of your reference photo for a drawing or painting can foreshadow the quality of how your art piece will come out Because if you can t understand what you re drawing from it will be reflected onto the canvas There s a reason why as an art student I was made to copy the paintings of Rembrandt and Caravaggio In order to be the best you have to learn from the best So regardless if you re a UX UI master or a junior developer copying layouts will help you understand design at first hand It will help you understand the basic tools of Figma but also allow you to practice effective design habits This is crucial because it will allow you to build up your own design vocabulary that you can draw from and customize to your own aesthetic This only enhances the importance of having resources So if you find a template that you like click on template and scroll down to the bottom Click Copy to Figma The page will bring you back to your work page with the layout of the template From there challenge yourself to duplicate the template yourself Similar to coding if you don t know how to do something look it up I must have mentioned this a thousand times before but I ll say it again Don t be afraid to use resources and outside references If you get stuck look on forums youtube and the Figma resources page to understand the best practices You can never have too many references What s great about this is that you are given a concrete objective and goal on what to create Don t feel bad if you are unable to duplicate everything in its entirety The point is to acquire a basic understanding of the tools you have and gain experience on how others have utilized them Below is an example of the login page for the Food Delivery UI Kit that I replicated You ll notice a lot of inconsistencies between the original template left and my in progress duplicate right The colors are a bit off the fonts may be a bit bigger and the spacing might be slightly different but for the most part I accomplished the goal of duplicating my first frame This leads me to my next piece of advice don t sweat the small stuff There may be some features you won t be able to replicate yet That s to be expected There are a variety of ways to construct a layout which is why it s important to take plenty of time to get the fundamentals down I intend to further inspect the template log in page to continue working on the check box for keep me logged in as well as getting the sizing the same Then I can proceed to the next frame What I really like about Figma is similar to Frontendmentor io they give you a fully fleshed out piece and you have to reverse engineer it To some this may be a bit overwhelming but maybe I m accustomed to it because I can attribute it to drawing from a reference photo I understand what the objective is and I have a clear reference to guide me in the right direction So far I m excited at the prospect of practicing Figma and gaining more knowledge For now I plan on using it to create better and more in depth layouts for my job when I m building out new pages My goal is to eventually start utilizing wireframing and components to create an even more immersive layout and eventually high end prototypes Takeaways gather resources ie youtube tutorials forums join Figma groups follow Figma developers on social media read Figma resource articles take the time to explore the dashboard home page and tools copy other people s layouts for best practices abide by Figma resources have patience and don t worry about perfection we all start somewhere |

Using testing-playground with React Testing Library |
https://dev.to/katieraby/using-testing-playground-with-react-testing-library-26j7
|
Using testing playground with React Testing LibraryReact Testing Library is a popular testing utility tool for front end testing Challenges can arise using React Testing Library when trying to work out how to target an element A logical option may be to add a data testid attribute to the element you want to target Yet there are many downsides to this approach According to the React Testing Library guiding principles The more your tests resemble the way your software is used the more confidence they can give you Kent C DoddsWe can often spend time testing implementation details Using the data testid attribute on an element is only testing that the element exists Our focus when testing should be on the user for example what the user sees or how the user interacts with it It can be a struggle to work out how to target elements without the use of data testid Thankfully we have the testing playground The testing playground is a tool which gives you a visual representation of the DOM and helps you discover the best queries to target elements How to access the playground from within your testsThere are two ways you can access the playground Logging the testing playground from within a test generates a link within your console when you run your tests which you can open in the browser import screen from testing library react it test it block gt screen logTestingPlaygroundURL expect Call the debug method screen debug which prints out the DOM output Copy and paste the DOM output into the testing playground directly Once the playground is open you can navigate around it using the inspect tool much like the developer tools inspect When you inspect an element in the visual DOM selecting it will display the suggested query to copy into your tests The display gives you information about accessible and semantic ways to query your element For example buttons can be targeted using the accessible role of button The testing playground provides you with direct feedback when you make edits to the code The playground displays improvements you can make to your code and queries for example how to make your queries more specific by adding a name Using the suggested queries is preferable to using the non specific test ids Another helpful use of the testing playground is to confirm what elements are visible in the DOM You may be expecting to see a success message after a user clicks a button If your test fails you can use the playground as a debugging tool to see what is visible to the user Alternatively you can use screen debug for the DOM output In summary the testing playground is a great tool to use in conjunction with React Testing Library Give it a go and see how it can improve your testing skills |

Instagram enables product tagging for everyone in the US |

|
Instagram enables product tagging for everyone in the USStarting today all Instagram users in the US with public accounts can tag products in their feed posts The option had until now been limited to brands and some creators Budding influencers for instance can help their audience buy things they show off in their posts So those just getting home from Coachella and posting their photos of their weekend exploits might be able to let their followers shop their festival looks Instagram previously said the idea behind the feature is to help people “support their favorite small businesses At least for now you won t get a cut of sales if you tag products though Instagram has tested affiliate shops and Meta wants to do more to help smaller creators earn a living through its apps nbsp InstagramIf you re eager to give brands you love some free promotion tagging products doesn t seem overly complicated It works in a similar way to tagging other users First you ll need to tag an eligible brand then you can look for products using descriptors You may be able to specify a style and color before adding the tag Anyone who taps on a product tag will be able to buy that item directly in Instagram or by going to the brand s product detail page Product tagging won t stop at feed posts Instagram says it s working on bringing a similar feature for Stories |

Nintendo’s Super Mario anime has been remastered in 4K to confuse a new generation |

Nintendo s Super Mario anime has been remastered in K to confuse a new generationYou probably didn t get to watch Nintendo s first anime movie when it premiered in Japan in but you now have your chance ーat quality you would never have experienced in theaters Polygonnotes Femboy Films has released a K remaster of The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach on both YouTube below and the Internet Archive You can not only expect clean color corrected visuals based on a rare mm print but new English subtitles and a fresh two channel Dolby Surround audio capture from the VHS release The story isn t exactly revolutionary but it s an intriguing peek at the Super Mario Bros franchise at a time when the canon was far from settled Mario and Luigi travel from the real world into the Mushroom Kingdom to rescue Princess Peach after briefly escapes into their realm and is captured by King Koopa Bowser You can expect many references to the original Super Mario Bros game but you ll also find unusual deviations from the now established premise Mario and Luigi work at a grocery store and they re compelled to save Peach thanks to a Dumpling Dog character And did we mention Luigi drinks sake Whatever you think of the plot this is a significant film preservation project Great Mission was only officially released in Japan and there was just one run of VHS tapes If it weren t for the restoration the anime might have been lost to modern audiences The remaster should ensure that younger gamers have a glimpse of early Super Mario culture beyond emulated games or the not so stellar American movie from |

Samsung Galaxy A53 5G review: Hardly an upgrade |
https://www.engadget.com/samsung-galaxy-a53-5g-review-180048770.html?src=rss
|
Samsung Galaxy A G review Hardly an upgradeSamsung s Galaxy A G wasn t the best midrange phone you could buy in but it did possess some standout features including a responsive display and versatile camera It was easy to imagine the company iterating on the A G to make it the top of its class Sadly the Galaxy A G is not dramatically different from its predecessor Samsung has made a handful of tweaks by adding a more efficient processor and a bigger battery But at best they feel like window dressing Worse in some ways the phone feels like a step back DisplayIgor Bonifacic EngadgetLet s start with what hasn t changed The A features a inch Super AMOLED display with a by resolution nits of peak brightness and a Hz refresh rate That screen is the main reason to buy the A ーit s big vibrant fast and makes everything from scrolling through social media to watching videos enjoyable It doesn t support HDR or offer a variable refresh rate like some of Samsung s more expensive phones but that s not much of an issue Even with the display set to Hz I could get nearly two full days of moderate use and light gaming from the mAh battery CamerasIgor Bonifacic EngadgetThe A also comes with the same quad camera system as the A G The standout here is the megapixel main sensor with an f aperture lens and optical image stabilization On a sunny day the camera and Samsung s imaging software consistently capture photos with saturated colors It s also surprisingly good at preserving both shadow and highlight detail in high contrast scenes The main camera struggles when there isn t a lot of light producing images with a noticeable amount of noise but that s something you see on a lot of midrange phones A supporting MP depth sensor helps the A s main camera take pleasant portrait shots The A also includes one of the better macro modes I ve used on a midrange device thanks to an interface that makes it easy to ensure you ve nailed the focus on your subject With ample light the MP selfie camera is likewise capable of capturing flattering photos By default Samsung s beauty filter applies a moderate amount of smoothing which you can adjust by tapping the “magic wand icon at the top Then there s the MP ultra wide camera that feels like an afterthought It does a decent job of capturing scenes that are too big for the main lens but there s a noticeable drop in quality due to its lower resolution One quirk I noticed across all of the A s cameras is that they re not great at adjusting for color temperature Many of the shots I took showed a noticeable green or purple tint They were easy enough to fix with an editing app like Snapseed but not everyone has the patience for that Overall the A features a capable camera system but I think it s a missed opportunity With the A G Samsung was already behind the curve Sure it offered versatility but phones like the Pixel a could take consistently better photos The A does nothing to better position Samsung against the competition in the midrange market and it s likely to feel even more outdated when the Pixel a comes out Igor Bonifacic EngadgetThere are things Samsung has changed though starting with the phone s exterior The company has shaved millimeters off the A to make it mm thick At the same time it removed the headphone jack As of this review Samsung is offering a free set of Galaxy Buds Live when you buy the A through its website so at least the company is helping ease the transition Still it s a shame to see the headphone jack go because it made the A G somewhat unique What makes the external tweaks even more disappointing is that Samsung hasn t addressed any of the issues we had with the A G s finish The matte material on the back of the phone is still a magnet for fingerprints and smudges Also in the US Samsung is again only offering the phone in boring black PerformanceIgor Bonifacic EngadgetI could overlook Samsung removing the headphone jack and leaving the camera as is if the A was fast Mediocre performance was one of the main reasons we didn t recommend the A G and the one notable update the A brings to the table is a new chipset Samsung has equipped this year s model with its own Exynos SoC and it is by far the most disappointing thing about the phone Simply put it s not much of an upgrade over the A G s Snapdragon G In my testing the A frequently stalled when I tried to switch between apps and there was consistent stuttering in regular use It was also slow to launch and operate the camera app with a seconds long delay between my pressing the shutter button and the camera firing It was even worse when I tried to play games Samsung claims the Exynos offers up to percent faster graphics than the Snapdragon G but I saw regular frame rate drops in games like League of Legends Wild Rift and Genshin Impact I suspect some of the A s performance woes boil down to the phone only coming with GB of RAM Unfortunately Samsung doesn t offer an GB variant in the US The A comes with Android and the latest version of One UI along with a promised four years of platform updates and five years of security fixes That s among the best support you ll find on a device at this price and Samsung should be applauded for this But I doubt you will want to hold on to this phone for that long I can see myself getting fed up with the slow processor within a year Wrap upIgor Bonifacic EngadgetAt the A costs less than the A G That may seem like a bonus but Samsung doesn t ship the phone with a wall charger anymore and it hasn t added wireless charging The company s W power adapter costs an extra In addition to the Galaxy Buds Live promotion I mentioned earlier the company is currently offering up to off the A if you trade in your existing device The A is a good purchase if you want the best display you can find for under but there are better all around options For instance the Pixel a features a cleaner version of Android faster updates as well as a headphone jack and more consistent camera Igor Bonifacic EngadgetIf you re set on a Samsung phone and have an extra to spend consider the Galaxy S FE At it was overpriced But nowadays you can regularly find it for about It offers a much faster processor with WiFi support Those are things that will make it feasible to keep the S FE for longer than you would the A Had Samsung done more to future proof the A it would be easier for me to recommend But with a middling chipset and a camera that feels stuck in the past you re better off spending your money on a phone that you ll be happy with for years to come
