海外TECH DEV Community Using Data with Hugo https://dev.to/cloudcannon/using-data-with-hugo-110f Using Data with HugoBy Mike NeumegenBrought to you by CloudCannon the Git based CMS for Hugo A data file in Hugo is sort of like a read only database The way it works is you can put JSON CSV YAML XML or TOML files in a directory called data then access that data in a layout using Site Data You can also download JSON or CSV files from an external source on build if you want to get fancy Creating your first data fileFirst we ll create a data file with all of your favorite vacation spots Create data vacation spots yml with the following content name Masai Mara National Reserve latitude longitude name Serengeti National Park latitude longitude name Okavango Delta latitude longitude name Etosha National Park latitude longitude name Kidepo Valley Park latitude longitude What are Shortcodes To list your favorite vacation spots you re going to need Map software ーyou ll use the fantastic OpenStreetMap and Leaflet A JavaScript list of markers ーyou have this in a data file currently JavaScript to set up the map and markers A div to hold the mapWe could put all of this in a content file but it s going to be far more complicated than the simple markdown we have there currently And what if we wanted to use this map again on another page That s a lot of HTML to copy and paste around Fortunately Hugo has an answer and it s called Shortcodes A shortcode is similar to a partial except you use them in content files Hugo even has a bunch already built in You ll create a shortcode which can be used in any content file to create a map with marked locations Let s see how it works Your first ShortcodeCreate a directory called shortcodes inside layouts and add a file called vacation spots html with the following content lt div id map gt lt div gt lt link rel stylesheet href dist leaflet css crossorigin gt lt script src dist leaflet js crossorigin gt lt script gt lt script gt let markers Site Data vacation spots lt script gt lt script src map js gt lt script gt There are a few things going on here so let me explain First we have the map element which will hold the map Then we re loading the stylesheet for Leaflet which will help us create nice pins and pop ups on the map Next is the leaflet JavaScript file Following that is the list of markers coming from your data file Here it s output as a JSON array Finally we re referencing map js which we ll create shortly This is responsible for initializing the map and adding the markers Let s add the JavaScript to initialize the map and add the markers Create static map js with the following content const map L map map L tileLayer https s tile openstreetmap org z x y png attribution amp copy lt a href gt OpenStreetMap lt a gt contributors addTo map let bounds for let i i lt markers length i const marker L marker markers i latitude markers i longitude addTo map marker bindPopup markers i name bounds push markers i latitude markers i longitude map fitBounds bounds We re not here to learn JavaScript so I ll leave this one for you to decipher or not The final set is to actually use the shortcode Open up content about md and append the following These are my favorite vacation spots lt vacation spots gt Open it up in a browser and admire all your hard work What s next This is only the beginning of your Hugo journey You now have the skills to build a basic Hugo site To continue the journey there s a few resources I recommend The Hugo documentation is a great resource for learning everything Hugo has to offer The Hugo community forums are welcoming to new comers This is a good place to get support and connect with the community Bootstrap to a client editable Hugo site is a more advanced Hugo tutorial that shows you how to convert a purely static website to a Hugo site clients can update Finally I want to quickly mention CloudCannon it s a content management system with first class support for Hugo and syncs directly with your Git repository So your developer team can continue working in Hugo while your content team can manage the content on the site It s the best of both worlds Thanks for reading and Happy Hugoing 2022-06-10 00:41:52
海外TECH DEV Community Blogging in Hugo https://dev.to/cloudcannon/blogging-in-hugo-5anj Blogging in HugoBy Mike NeumegenBrought to you by CloudCannon the Git based CMS for Hugo A blog in Hugo is relatively straightforward It consists of a page that lists all the blog posts and a series of content pages with a date for the posts That s all there is to it Creating a blog list pageYou re going to see how the layouts hierarchies work with this example Create a directory called posts in your content directory and inside that create a file called index md with the following title Blog index md ーremember what that means It s a table of contents file and in this case it will be listing your posts At the moment it s going to try to use the layouts default list html layout You don t want to use this layout as this page doesn t have any content Instead you ll want to create a new layout specifically for listing posts The way the Hugo layout hierarchy works is it will first look for a layout that matches the current section think of section as the directory then fall back to the global default in default In other words we can create a new directory called posts in the layouts directory and inside create list html with the following content define main lt h gt My posts lt h gt lt ul gt range Pages lt li gt lt a href Permalink gt Title lt a gt Date Format January lt li gt end lt ul gt end There are few new concepts here let me explain A list page index html has an array of all its children pages with the variable Pages Date has format called on it and gets passed a random date in Why is that It s a quirk of Go for formatting dates You can read more about it here Permalink can be called on any page to get its end URL It s particularly useful if you want to link to a page That s all we need for our list page Let s move onto a post Creating a postWe ve already done the hard part Let s get this blog finished by creating a few posts The posts live in the content posts directory and don t require any special naming convention One tip I like to encourage is adding the date of the post to the file name Hugo will completely ignore it but it helps when you have find a post amongst hundreds of others Let s create three blog posts to get you started contents posts i like to roar md title I like to roar date Hi quick update from me I just want to let everyone know that I like roaring contents posts today i made friends md title Today I made friends date I got lost in the woods today Two friends a Meerkat and a Warthog found me sung a song with me and gave my life new meaning Today was a good day contents posts vegan experiment md title Vegan experiment date I tried to become a vegan today I made it to lunch time and couldn t bear the sight of another green leaf Yuck Just like the blog list page these posts will try to use layouts default single html Let s create a layout specifically for posts at layouts posts single html with the following define main lt h gt Params Title lt h gt lt p gt Date Format January lt p gt Content end Finally let s add the blog to the navigation Open layouts partials nav html and add another item lt li gt lt a href posts gt Blog lt a gt lt li gt Run hugo serve open the site in a browser and view your masterpiece What s next In our final lesson we will use Hugo Data files to populate a map with your favorite vacation spots 2022-06-10 00:41:47
海外TECH DEV Community Hugo Templating Basics https://dev.to/cloudcannon/hugo-templating-basics-1827 Hugo Templating BasicsBy Mike NeumegenBrought to you by CloudCannon the Git based CMS for Hugo With Hugo templating you can control how your page is rendered You can use variables loop over arrays check conditions and run functions Think of it as a simple programming language to help build the pages on your site Those curly braces in your layout that s Hugo templating What is front matter Front matter is a snippet of metadata at the top of your content files Some of the metadata will be specifically for Hugo for example setting a layout or indicating the current page is a draft Other forms of metadata will be specific for your site for example indicating which type of hero to use on the page or a list of your top five favorite foods Front matter comes in the form of a small YAML snippet at the top of content files We ve seen this on both the index and about pages title Home It might not look like much but we can reference this front matter in our layout using Hugo templating What is Hugo templating Hugo uses Go templating as its templating language in layouts It s easy once you get your head around it As with many things in Hugo land sometimes it s easier to show rather than tell Examples of Hugo templating Output a string lt p gt A Go template is a normal HTML page When you want to execute a piece of code you can use double curly braces like this Hello lt p gt Output from front matter lt You can reference a variable from your front matter in a layout with Params For example you could output the title on your pages with gt lt title gt Params title lt title gt Output from site configuration lt Sometimes you ll want to set a variable globally in your config toml Hugo has already initalized a title in your config toml You can access a variable from your global config with site For example gt lt title gt Params title Site title lt title gt Conditions lt We might want to check if the front matter title exists If it exists output it if not use the global config title gt if isset Params title lt title gt Params title lt title gt else lt title gt Site title lt title gt end Set and output a variable lt variables at set with a sign For example gt favorite food Gazelle favorite food Looping lt In Go an array that can change size is called a slice You can iterate over an array or slice using range gt best friends slice pumbaa timon nala rafiki lt ul gt range best friends lt li gt lt li gt end lt ul gt Nested Key valuesContent file title Appearance apperance eyes green snoot boopable whiskers true limbs claws side left position front claws side right position front claws side left position back claws side right position back Layout file lt If we want to output all of these variables we could call Params appearance x for each one Instead we could use with to change the context to It also has the benefit of checking whether the variable exists and won t run the block if it doesn t gt with Params appearance lt h gt My top appearance traits lt h gt lt dl gt lt dt gt Eyes lt dt gt lt dd gt eyes lt dd gt lt dt gt Snoot lt dt gt lt dd gt snoot lt dd gt lt dt gt Whiskers lt dt gt lt dd gt whiskers lt dd gt with limbs lt dt gt Claws lt dt gt lt dd gt lt ul gt range lt li gt position side claws lt li gt end lt ul gt lt dd gt end lt dl gt end These are the foundations of templating You ll be using all of these concepts throughout your Hugo journey You can browse through the templating documentation to get an idea of what else you can do If you like to keep your HTML output tidy you can use lt code gt and lt code gt to trim the whitespace surrounding the tag The Hugo documentation has a great example of this Putting it all togetherLet s put our new Hugo templating knowledge into action by adding a footer to your website that includes your name and current year On top of that we ll add an optional front matter field you can use to hide the footer on a particular page Let s start with an easy one Your name Add it as a new key in your config toml Because this is just something for this site rather than a special Hugo term we put it under the params object params name Simba Now let s create the partial Add footer html to your layout partials directory with the following with Params hide footer lt No footer here gt else lt footer gt Website made by Site Params name in now Year lt footer gt end And finally call the partial before lt body gt in the baseof html layout partial footer html To check the hide footer front matter is working let s turn the footer off on your about md page by adding this to the front matter hide footer trueRun hugo serve and look at your site in the browser The home page has the footer and the about page doesn t What s next Next we ll explore creating a blog in Hugo and put our new Hugo templating knowledge to the test 2022-06-10 00:41:41
海外TECH DEV Community Hugo Partials https://dev.to/cloudcannon/hugo-partials-no2 Hugo PartialsBy Mike NeumegenBrought to you by CloudCannon the Git based CMS for Hugo The idea behind a partial is simple it s a file that can be included into a layout to reduce repetition or simply hide some complexity You ll add a nav bar to your site with a partial While you could add this logic directly to your baseof html sometimes it s nice to split a layout up into smaller partials so you don t need to deal with a line file Your first partialCreate a partials directory in your layouts directory so the final path will be layouts partials Inside create nav html with the following contents lt nav gt lt ul gt lt li gt lt a href gt Home lt a gt lt li gt lt li gt lt a href about gt About lt a gt lt li gt lt ul gt lt nav gt That s the navigation taken care of Now it s time to include it in your layout Open layouts default baseof html and add the following below lt body gt partial nav html In Go your single quotes are no good for strings only double quotes designate a string Render your page and there you have it Your second partialLet s try another scenario to demonstrate the power of partials We will simplify baseof html even further by moving the contents of lt head gt to a partial Create layouts partials meta html with the following content lt meta charset utf gt lt title gt print Page Title lt title gt style resources Get sass main scss resources ToCSS resources Minify lt link rel stylesheet href style Permalink gt In this partial we have variables that need the context of the current page Lucky for you passing the context of the current page can be done with a single character Open up layouts default baseof html and replace the contents of lt head gt with the following partial meta html That little at the end is passing the context of the current page which allows the partial to print out the current page s title You ll see this come up a lot in your Hugo sites just you wait What s next In the next lesson we ll go through the basics of Hugo templating and see how we can manipulate and iterate over data 2022-06-10 00:41:37
海外TECH DEV Community Layouts in Hugo https://dev.to/cloudcannon/layouts-in-hugo-31hn Layouts in HugoBy Mike NeumegenBrought to you by CloudCannon the Git based CMS for Hugo Making good use of layouts is essential to creating an easy to maintain flexible and thriving Hugo website so let s see what makes them tick What is a layout A layout is used for all the framing on a page around the content For example think of all the things that remain relatively unchanged between pages on a website such as the header and footer In Hugo each page on the site is a content file At the top is a small snippet of metadata called front matter followed by markdown The goal of a content file is well to store the content in its purest form There s rarely any HTML or other presentation logic in a content file All of the fancy HTML to display and format the content lives in a layout One layout might be used for multiple content pages For example on a portfolio website you might use the same layout for your about page and services page Other times particularly if you re doing something intricate you might have a layout specifically for an individual content page for example a contact page with a complex form Your first pageThere s a Hugo concept called Page Bundles which can be tricky to get your head around We re going to do the bare minimum here to get your site going By default content pages use a layout called single Creating a content file which is named exactly index md underscore and all is the exception to this These pages act like a table of contents for the pages around it and use a layout called list by default Just like a good non fiction book it s a good practice to start off with a table of contents You ll do this for the home page of your site If all that sounded confusing it s actually much simpler than it sounds Create a file called index md in the directory content with the following content title Home Hello I m a ferocious lion The lines indicate the metadata or front matter I mentioned before We ll get to that in a future lesson Your first layoutHugo has a hierarchy to figure out which layout to use for a content d file The last fallback is looking for a layout in the default directory Let s create a default list layout for your home page Create a new directory inside layouts called default and inside create list html with the following content lt doctype html gt lt html gt lt head gt lt meta charset utf gt lt title gt Page Title lt title gt lt head gt lt body gt Content lt body gt lt html gt Those parts are rendering content from our content file index md using Hugo templating which we ll cover soon You ve got everything you need to render your first page Will it build or will it error There s only one way to find out Hugo has a command called serve which will build your site and serve it locally at http localhost by default Run this command in the root of your site and open the localhost address in your browser hugo serveLook at you go That s real content rendering through a layout on your Hugo site Let s celebrate with a second page on your site Your second layoutLet s get a second page on your website Create content about md note that we re not using an underscore here title About I m learning Hugo one step at a time about md looks for a single layout by default We could clone layouts default list html to layouts default single html and it would work fine but you d be left maintaining two very similar versions of the same layout We want to reduce repetition and make our lives easier where ever possible Instead create a new layout at layouts default baseof html with the following content lt doctype html gt lt html gt lt head gt lt meta charset utf gt lt title gt Page Title lt title gt lt head gt lt body gt block main end lt body gt lt html gt This is almost identical to the list layout with one minor change Instead of outputting Content we now have a main block This block is a placeholder that other layouts can use to only specify that part of the page Let s do that with your list layout Replace the content of layouts default list html with the following define main Content end Create layouts default single html with the exact same code Try going to http localhost about and see your new about page Adding stylesThis is a Hugo course so we re not going to go into any CSS However you and I can both agree that the default browser styles leave a lot to be desired Not only am I going to give you a stylesheet it s going to be a Sass stylesheet to make it easy to maintain as you expand your website We already have a directory called static where all the static assets live If we were using a plain CSS file this would be the place to put it We re using Sass which needs to be processed into a CSS file Create a directory in the root of your site called assets This is where the assets that need some form of processing will live Inside assets create a directory called sass This is where our scss files will live Let s create a main file at assets sass main scss with the following body width px margin auto font family sans serif nav ul list style none padding px px background a color fff text decoration none amp hover text decoration underline li display inline footer background fff padding px px font size em text align center map height px We also need to reference the stylesheet in our HTML Open layouts default baseof html and insert the following below lt title gt style resources Get sass main scss resources ToCSS resources Minify lt link rel stylesheet href style Permalink gt This tells Hugo to build the scss files and output the link in a stylesheet tag You ll notice this will apply to both the list and single layouts That work we did earlier is already coming in handy You may need to restart your hugo serve to see the changes in your browser What s next The only way to access the about page currently is by navigating to it directly In the next lesson we ll add site navigation using a Hugo partial 2022-06-10 00:41:31
