for a month here is my review Well the latest Linux I used as a main driver for my personal laptop was Ubuntu LTS But when I bought a new laptop Acer Swift SF T it just didn t work with Linux Therefore I had been with Windows ever since until I am with Linux again today on Fedora My overall experience with Linux again in is very satisfying Linux Fedora GNOME to be more specific has a very fluid and beautiful UI no less than Windows or macOS And if you mostly use free and open source software in your workflow it just works much faster fewer bugs on Linux compared to Windows For instance try using Inkscape or GIMP on Windows then try it again on Linux The different is night and day on my laptop Therefore I don t plan to go back to Windows yet However you still need to go through all the hassle to set up that s for sure For instance I need to manually install Intel Media Driver to make sure my Video player will use GPU for decoding Otherwise there will be some frames drop when playing a K file My review will run in many posts like a series This post is the first part that will tell you exactly whether you can use Linux in Why not Ubuntu LTS Because it doesn t work on my laptop my sound input and output show as dummy device On Fedora my speaker and mic just work out of the box I believe it s because Ubuntu LTS is on the relic kernel while Fedora is on the newer kernel by default My thought on this would be If you purchased a device laptop that has Linux pre installed use the pre installed distro See if your device is on the Ubuntu Certified Hardware list If your device is on that list use Ubuntu See if your device is officially supported by the distro For example a Raspberry Pi user would install Ubuntu rather than Fedora as it s officially supported by the Ubuntu team If your device is none of the above cases use Fedora as it has a more up to date kernel that s likely to support your device better I believe most laptops would fit into this category Don t use the unsigned kernel the distro that required you to disable secure boot on your laptop as you will have to set your BIOS password another password to remember That could lead to a headache situation if you can t remember the password There are a few things that don t work thoughBefore anything else I would like to talk about things that don t work at all And I doubt the issues below will be fixed any time soon or ever If you can t work with these issues it means that Linux is not ready for you at this time Therefore you don t have to read my upcoming reviews in my Fedora Linux Review series Without further ado let s find out the issues that will never be fixed ever Fingerprint ReaderIf you want to have a working fingerprint reader please avoid any laptop from Acer since most of them use the same reader from Egistec which doesn t support Linux Hopefully someone will work on this issue to make this reader work on Linux Here s the list of unsupported fingerprint readers on Linux Well even on Windows I find myself having a hard time with this fingerprint reader as I have around rate that I am able to scan my fingerprint with it And it usually stops working shortly after my laptop running for a while I guess if you want a decent fingerprint reader I suggest that you avoid any laptop from Acer HDMI Audio with DMIC Support on Intel Coffee Lake CPUThis issue is not only affect my laptop model Basically any Intel Coffee Lake laptop would likely have this issue since SOF driver doesn t support on Coffee Lake CPU Therefore if you re using any Intel Coffee Lake CPU you will have to stick with either HDaudio legacy driver that supports HDMI audio output but has no DMIC supported see here or SST driver that can t output any HDMI audio but has DMIC supported see kernel bug and Red Hat bug Moreover the sound on the SST driver default option on Fedora is very unstable for me as I lost the sound from my speakers all the time after using my laptop for a while Also the DMIC volume is too quiet which can be fixed with PulseAudio Volume Control I find myself using the HDaudio legacy driver as it s more stable and I need the HDMI audio to work with my projector For the mic I use my bluetooth headsets mic However when I go outside I use the SST driver instead as it s a more complete package when you are not connect to any other devices Here s how to change the sound driver on Linux Fedora on Wayland Open Terminal Type in nautilus admin hit enter and enter your password It will open the file manager which you can edit system files Go to etc modprobe d and look for snd intel conf file If you can t find it create a snd intel conf file here I recommend you to create a template for your right click menu so you can easily create a blank text file anywhere You can do this by opening Text Editor and save a blank text file to the Templates folder in your Home directory After this you will be able to create a blank text file anywhere through your right click menu In the snd intel conf file just add options snd intel dspcfg dsp driver if you want to use the HDaudio legacy driver options snd intel dspcfg dsp driver for the SST driver default setting on Fedora options snd intel dspcfg dsp driver for the SOF driver doesn t support on my device Intel Coffee Lake CPU For example I am using the HDaudio legacy driver so my snd intel conf file should be Save the file Open a new terminal window and run sudo dracut force Reboot That s it for today The next post I will talk about the issues that will be fixed in the future soon article i ll talk about how to set up a NodeJS Express server application At the end It should get across what NodeJS is how to set up Express and how to use GET requests using NodeJS Also this article is part of a series where i describe how to use GET requests POST requests and serve static files What is NodeJS JavaScript is a popular programming language that has mostly been used in the browser but with the invention of NodeJS we can run JavaScript away from the web browser We can now run JavaScript in the command line NodeJS is supported by Googles V Engine and is used by millions of developers everyday which means that NodeJS is here to stay NodeJS also has its own package library called NPM that handles importing and publishing re usable JavaScript modules In summary NodeJS isn t going anywhere is powerful and can be used in many different ways Why use NodeJS The reason many software web developers use NodeJS is because most web dev s already know JavaScript from working in the front end by using technologies like React Svelte Vue and a many other popular JavaScript frameworks Many developers decide to use NodeJS also because of the fact that JavaScript is asynchronous meaning at runtime code can execute if another piece of code is taking too long to run Which means a faster and much more efficient way to build and run software What is the NodeJS Express module As I explained earlier NodeJS has a package manager built around it called NPM And NPM can be used to download millions of modules that you can import into your project One of these modules is called Express Express is mostly used handle files when an HTTP request is received Express can also do many other things but we ll stick to a simple GET request for now First lets create our super simple index html file Whats an html file you ask An html file is the building block to all website some people call this a skeleton of the web and a browser knows how to interpret an HTML file in a way that makes it work with other files HTML has become very powerful over the last few years going from just simple text to now being able to download files lazy load recourse s make get requests to other files and much much more ill probably make a html article soon also But Anyway lets create our awesome HTML file now Here it is Just feel free to copy this to your index html file and save it there Lets install Express Open up your command line after making sure that NPM has been successfully installed NPM is the package manger for NodeJS and we ll need it to download express To make sure express is installed on your machine use npm v And your terminal output should look something like this You should receive the version of NPM installed on your machine After confirming that express is on your machine use this terminal command in the directory directory also called folder that your index html file sits in npm install expressYou should receive this output and just like that you have installed all the modules required to start working with express Using Express for a simple GET request Lets say that we have an html file that s sitting in our current directory like this And we want Express to handle a GET request to a certain route in our URL and return our index html file to the client that made that request With Express this is made pretty simple All you have to do is create a server js commonly called app js file import the Express module then initialize that class to an object variable Then specify our variables listening point using the listen port callback method All in all the code should look something like this Now run the script Now save the data to the server js file and run node followed by the server js file name It should look like this You receive our console output from the file Then we ll navigate to our web browser And type localhost It should look like this You did it You ve responded to the client the browser with your application Good job The amount of engineering that has come to this point is incredible and it took decades to get to this point You can now make other html files and use GET requests to serve this files Now for the problem serving a single file using GET The problem with using one GET request is that only the specified file will be sent back to the client this is called a response What if the index html links to a JavaScript file or a CSS file for it to work you ll need more get requests that link to those files A simple solution would be host serve a static folder containtng all the files
