What is JavaScript's Anonymous and Arrow function? |
https://dev.to/surajondev/what-is-javascripts-anonymous-and-arrow-function-273m
|
What is JavaScript x s Anonymous and Arrow function IntroductionWilliam Shakespeare once said that “What s in Name but as a developer we can disagree We have to name variables classes functions constructors and others Managing all the name and their scope within the code can be hectic and can create further complexity in the code Naming a function can be solved with the anonymous function in JavaScript other languages also have an anonymous function Anonymous means an entity having no name or identity The anonymous function is a function that has no name and can execute immediately after defining them In this article we are going to look into the following topics Named functionAnonymous functionArrow functionAnd their examplesSo let s get started What is Named Function Before getting to the Anonymous function let s discuss the Named function Named functions are general function that has a name As you might know functions are blocks of code that are used to perform a particular task Syntax of a Named function in JavascriptNamed function declared with the keyword function followed by the name of the function The name will be followed by a pair of parenthesis and then pair of curly brackets Within the curly brackets we define the code These functions can be invoked with the use of the name of the function function myFunction console log “It s a Named Function myFunction Benefits of Named FunctionThere are many use cases of named functions They have a variety of benefits includingA named function can be reusableIt can make code readable as it has separation between function and invokingIn case of error handling the compiler will give an error with the name of the function making it easy to handle the errorYou can define the named function after invoking it While interrupting the code JavaScript will move the function at the top This is method is called Hoisting Drawbacks of Named FunctionNamed function can t be invoked immediately after declaration Even for functions that will be used only once you have to declare with name Managing Different names of functions variables components and all can be hectic What is Anonymous Function Solving the problems of Named functions the Anonymous function came into existence You already know that an anonymous function does not have a name Let s look into the syntax of it function Code We define an anonymous function within the parenthesis After that we have the keyword function to define any function followed by the pair of parentheses but without the name Then the pair of curly brackets within those we can define the code of the function This is the syntax of an anonymous function in JavaScript Implementation of an Anonymous Function in JavaScriptAn anonymous function can be defined as mentioned above but for invoking we need to store them in a variable These variables can be of any data type such as var let and const Using the const is widely used and recommended for a non changeable variable so we are going to use the const for storing the anonymous function in the variable We use the name of the variable for invoking the function Here is the syntax for implementing them in JavaScriptconst myFuntion Function console log “Hello World myFunction You can also pass the argument in the Anonymous function Here is the exampleconst myFunction function str console log str myFunction Hello World Use of Anonymous Function in JavaScriptAs we have seen the syntax and implementation of Anonymous functions in JavaScript it s time to learn about some use case scenarios of the anonymous function a Using anonymous functions as arguments of other functionsJavaScript is a High Order language which makes it able to pass functions as an argument to other functions Previously we used to pass the name of the function like this function myFunction console log “ second has passed setTimeout myFunction As the Anonymous function does not have a name we can pass directly as the arguments to other functions We do not need explicitly declare the function outside the argument Here it goes likesetTimeout myFunction conole log “ minute has passed This makes our code even cleaner as one time used functions are directly defined as the argument b Immediately invoked function executionWith the normal function we have to define it and then invoke it for its execution An anonymous function can be declared and immediately invoked for its execution You can see the code example here function console log “Hello World In the above example the anonymous function is defined as usual followed by pair of parenthesis This parenthesis makes the function immediately invoked for the execution During the immediately invoked function you can also pass the argument within the parentheses defined after the declaration of the function const firstName John const lastName Doe function console log firstName lastName firstName lastName What is Arrow Function The Arrow function was introduced to us in ES to simplify the anonymous function even more This function also has no name but its syntax is different from a normal anonymous function The syntax of an arrow function is simple We have parentheses within that we can pass the argument for the function This is followed by the equivalent sign and a greater than sign gt together making it gt After that we can define the code in parenthesis or curly brackets Parenthesis are used for a single statement and it will return that statement For multiple statements curly brackets are used You need to explicitly define the return statement in this case The difference between the arrow function and the Anonymous functionAn arrow function can be defined in a line while in the anonymous function we need more than lines for the execution of one statement Anonymous Function function Code Arrow Function gt Code Note The above example is for a single statement Example of Arrow FunctionArrow functions do not have names but they can be stored in a variable as in the Anonymous function This variable can be used for invoking the function const myFunction gt console log Arrow Funciton are awesome myFunction As we see in the Anonymous function the arrow function can also be passed as an argument to another functionsetTimeout gt console log “ second has passed We can also pass argument in the arrow function as in named functions const name firstName lastName gt console log firstName lastName name “John Doe ConclusionWe have come so far from Named function to Anonymous Function to Arrow Function All these types of functions have a variety of use cases in certain conditions We have discussed many examples with arguments and benefits of using these functions All the above function is useful I hope this article has helped you in deciding which function to use according to different scenarios Thanks for reading the blog post |

'Stray' review: A cute and contained cyberpunk adventure game |
https://www.engadget.com/stray-review-ps5-cyberpunk-adventure-cute-cat-173018571.html?src=rss
|
x Stray x review A cute and contained cyberpunk adventure gameDespite the fact that it stars a cat there s no extra fluff in Stray The game takes place under the dome of an artificial sky in a futuristic city populated by robots and cut off from the natural world and mechanically it s also perfectly contained Every detail in Stray serves a purpose whether it s an environmental cue nudging players toward a specific path or the ability to meow at will which is adorable but can also distract enemies in combat scenes Stray is a cyberpunk playground where players are rewarded for trusting their instincts and it offers a beautiful balance of exploration puzzle solving and soothing cat activities And somehow along the way it manages to tell a heart wrenching human story without any people at all Cat people you re going to love Stray but there are also some scenes that are hard to watch The game begins with a gang of four cats living their best lives in a lush overgrown industrial park that s long been abandoned by people Players are an orange tabby leaping across huge pipes and steel beams until one slip changes everything As its friends look on the cat falls dozens of storeys down a deep pitch black hole landing in a broken heap on the concrete floor of a sewer The cat is injured making players walk around limping and woozy for a while before recovering normal mobility The injury scene is tough to watch and even harder to play even for a dog person like myself but it builds an instant emotional connection with the tabby that carries through the entire game The bulk of Stray takes place in the neon lit neighborhoods trapped under the dome and populated by anthropomorphic robots Players explore while trying to find a way back to their friends in the sunlight and eventually the cat is equipped with a cute little drone that helps it communicate with the robots and hack certain terminals The drone B is attempting to solve a mystery of its own while traversing the cities players collect memories from random shining objects helping B remember where it came from Stray s world was built for humans and bipedal robots which makes it particularly intriguing to explore as a cat From a foot off the ground things like doors are useless while items like pipes railings and air conditioning units provide ideal platforms for scaling buildings and navigating the twisting alleyways under the dome The environmental puzzles take advantage of this cat level perspective inviting players to look at the world with different light reflective eyes BlueTwelve StudioNone of the riddles in Stray are overly complicated though quite a few of them are clever The most engaging puzzles ask players to travel back and forth among multiple locations helping or tricking various robots to get what s needed with minimal direction from the game itself These puzzles are solved by exploring the cities and talking with their inhabitants naturally building out the lore at the same time And Stray doesn t stick with any mechanic for too long presenting new enemies and fresh situations to solve with each environment The path forward in Stray is usually obvious with yellow paint marking jumpable platforms and large neon arrows often pointing the way These navigation elements aren t exactly subtle but they blend into the richness of the city only standing out when they re really needed This makes progressing in Stray feel completely natural with the environment constantly directing players along the proper path the next leap is usually the right one and this keeps the pace up nicely overall There are minimal on screen instructions in Stray and most of them have to do with performing housecat activities like scratching rugs knocking over plants and paint cans and curling up to sleep These actions are cute as hell but they also help move the narrative forward at times For instance clawing a couch leg is fun and adorable but the cat can also scratch at certain doors to make the robots open up unlocking new rooms of secrets Meowing meanwhile can happen at any time even during cutscenes or while sleeping and this is pretty much the best mechanic in the game The most common on screen prompt is a small indicator that clings to the edge of any jumpable surface whether the cat is climbing up or leaping down This is the most restrictive mechanic in the game as it dictates where the cat can move and sometimes cuts off pathways that look viable There are plenty of moments in the game where I feel stuck for a moment wanting to jump to a specific area but unable to move without that small white dot telling me I can This dampens the game s feeling of freedom and adds hiccups to its overall pacing but it doesn t destroy the ability to explore the cities completely I d say I m able to complete percent of the jumps I want to I also see how this mechanic helps cultivate a sense of cat like confidence in every scene it s impossible to fall off the edge of a walkway no matter how thin or wobbly because you can t leave until that dot shows up on a nearby platform With invisible walls like these who needs nine lives BlueTwelve StudioI do apparently While players are unable to leap to their doom it is possible to die in Stray and I did more than once The city under the dome is infested with vicious bacterial blobs that chase the cat relentlessly any time it s near creating a handful of dramatic run and dodge sequences If the blobs jump on the cat and stay there for a few seconds it s game over and you start at the last checkpoint which is usually just a minute or so behind There are also hovering sentinels in the later levels that shoot anything that enters their pool of light leading to a lot of shadow slinking and some intense timing puzzles Among all of the puzzle solving ledge leaping and blob dodging Stray introduces a world of lighthearted dystopia where robots don t hate the humans that came before them and instead attempt to cultivate plants that can survive under the darkness of the dome just because people would have liked that The robots themselves have distinct personalities and engaging histories and as a cat I was able to soak it all up and carry these stories along my journey Compared with most dystopian cyberpunk games Stray is downright joyful It s a perfectly contained adventure game with plenty of fresh ideas each one pared down to its purest form Even the meow mechanic Stray comes out on July th for PlayStation PS and PC via Steam |
